Dear Alumnae/i and Friends: Thanksgiving came a little early for us at Ursuline College this year. On November 14, we commemorated the 150th anniversary of the College’s charter with a Founder’s Day Mass of Thanksgiving in gratitude to God for a century and a half of blessings. Surrounded by the beauty of the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, our prayers were magnified by the music of the Cathedral Choir.

We are grateful to Bishop Edward C. Malesic, to Bishop Martin Amos as main celebrant and the concelebrants who joined him, to Rev. Donald Cozzens for his inspiring homily, and to all the staff and parishioners of the Cathedral.

As our anniversary year continues, we look forward to Celebrate150: A Sesquicentennial Gala for Ursuline College on Saturday, April 30, 2022, in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s beautiful Ames Family Atrium. There we will honor the many whose contributions of time, talent, and treasure have enabled the College to transform generations of students for service, leadership, and professional excellence. Invitations will be mailed soon to everyone who receives this magazine. Please mark your calendar, which may begin to fill up as we move (God willing) away from the worst of the pandemic.

On today’s campus, as you’ll read here, we celebrate our new Center of Excellence in Nursing Education designation from the National League for Nursing. And regardless of their academic major, our student-athletes win accolades in the classroom as well as on the court and on the field. With the support of their coaches and faculty, these students bring to their work a sense of purpose that rings with the words of our foundress Saint Angela Merici, who instructed her company of women: “Put your whole soul into the enterprise you have undertaken.”

In this anniversary year, I know that Saint Angela blesses each of you for putting your heart and soul into the work of Ursuline College. We mark our sesquicentennial with generous friends and family gathered around, and together we look to the future, to the College’s next 150 years.

Campus News Nursing program named a national Center of Excellence Ursuline College’s Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions shone at one of the country’s largest gatherings of nurse educators, the National League for Nursing’s September 2021 Honors Convocation/Education Summit. Before more than 600 nurse leaders and educators from across the country: • The College was named a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education • Dean Patricia Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, was announced as Chair-Elect of the NLN’s Board of Governors • Dean Sharpnack was presented with the prestigious NLN Mary Adelaide Nutting Award for Outstanding Teaching or Leadership in Nursing Education • Associate Professor Laura Goliat, DNP, APRN, FNPBC was accepted as a Fellow in the NLN’s Academy of Nursing Education • Drs. Sharpnack and Goliat presented a session together with Cleveland Clinic colleagues titled “Supporting Transition to Practice: Agility by Fire.”

Ursuline is one of 10 programs nationally, and the only nursing program in Ohio, named a Center of Excellence in the learning and professional development category.

The Center of Excellence designation is for 2021 through 2025.

“We are delighted to receive this well-deserved honor from the National League for Nursing,” said Ursuline College President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD. “Based on objective measures including our historically

high passage rates on the national nurse licensing exam, our 100% employment rate post licensure, and our strong clinical partnerships with some of the nation’s top health care systems, we already knew our Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions offered excellent programs. This NLN recognition lets the rest of the world know.”

Sharpnack agreed. “Ursuline faculty submitted a 100-page document that provided evidence, data, background information, and testimonials from health care partners. What we were able to demonstrate is our commitment, sustained over decades, to teaching evidence-based nursing practice and promoting our students’ development as professionals.”

In an official announcement sent to Sharpnack, NLN Membership Director Elizabeth Reyna wrote, “The National League for Nursing is proud to offer the Center of Excellence program as a way to recognize schools that have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and invested resources over a sustained period of time to distinguish themselves in a specific area related to nursing education. It is an honor to count Ursuline College among the outstanding group of recipients of this designation.”

Dean Sharpnack is chair-elect of 40,000-strong National League for Nursing The NLN announced at its gathering that voting members had chosen Sharpnack as chair-elect of the organization’s Board of Governors. She now serves two years as chair-elect and, starting in 2023, she will serve two years as chair. Members of the Board of Governors assume significant responsibility for all aspects of the NLN, shaping its vision, developing its policies, advancing its mission and goals, and ensuring its growth.

Beyond Ursuline, Sharpnack holds leadership positions on several regulatory bodies, health care agencies, and professional organizations. She sits on the Ohio Board of Nursing as past president and current supervisory member and nursing education chair. She is a member of the Advisory Board to the American Hospital Association. She is a fellow in both the Academy of Nurse Educators and the American Academy of Nursing.

In addition to her appointment as chair-elect, Sharpnack received the prestigious NLN Mary Adelaide Nutting Award for Outstanding Teaching or Leadership in Nursing Education. An American educator, administrator, and author in the field of nursing, Nutting is considered the world’s first professor of nursing.

The NLN Awards Committee unanimously selected Sharpnack for the Nutting award. The Awards Committee found her contributions to be an outstanding representation of the NLN’s mission: promoting excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce to advance the health of the nation and the global community.

Also at the NLN convocation, Associate Professor Goliat was inducted as a Fellow in the NLN Academy of Nursing Education. Individuals selected for this honor have made enduring and substantial contributions to nursing education as teachers, mentors, scholars, public policy advocates, practice partners and administrators. They provide visionary leadership and are recognized for their expertise in nursing education.

Ursuline is awarded $2.2 million federal grant to promote nursing workforce diversity Ursuline College has been approved for a $2.2 million federal grant to help improve diversity in the nursing workforce. Funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will help the College improve wrap-around support services for undergraduate nursing students to ensure success for our students and diversity for the nursing profession.

“We are extremely gratified that the Health Resources and Services Administration saw value in our proposed initiatives and that the grant reviewers have confidence in our ability to make a difference in health care,” said Ursuline College President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD. “These efforts align well with Ursuline’s mission of transforming students for service, leadership, and professional excellence.”

Titled STAR Scholars (for Success, Transformation, Achievement, Resilience), the Ursuline program aims to increase graduation rates and further diversify the nursing workforce serving Greater Cleveland. Research indicates that a lack of diversity in the health care workforce contributes to lack of cultural aptitude, patient mistrust, and health and healthcare disparities.

Ursuline in consortium to improve student transitions from community college Ursuline College is one of 14 Ohio independent colleges and universities participating in a grant-funded effort to improve the transition for students who transfer from a community college to a private four-year institution.

The national Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) announced that a grant from the Teagle Foundation and Arthur Vining Davis Foundation will fund an Ohio Consortium for Transfer Pathways to the Liberal Arts. The 14 independent colleges and universities are all members of the CIC-affiliated Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges. In coordination with 10 community colleges in Ohio, they will establish pathways to baccalaureate degrees in English, psychology, and biology for community colleges students.

Students present theses at Johns Hopkins conference Ursuline students Gabrielle Post and Heather Bloeser were selected to present their senior thesis research papers at the nation’s only undergraduate humanities research conference, the Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium at Johns Hopkins University. In April, Post presented “A Battle with Ink: Feminist Revisionism in Constance Fenimore Woolson’s Literature” and Bloeser presented “Tzedakah in Action: Looking at Martha Wolfenstein.”

Presenters at this two-day, virtual conference represented more than 45 states, multiple countries, and more than 200 colleges.

The students chose Fenimore Woolson and Wolfenstein from a list of 60 Northeast Ohio artists singled out by the now 60-year-old Cleveland Arts Prize for their “extraordinary contributions to the arts in the years before the Arts Prize existed.”

English Department Chair and Assistant Professor Katharine G. Trostel, PhD, introduced the students to this Cleveland Arts Prize Past Masters project. For this fall semester, she organized a free, online science fiction writing workshop in conjunction with Lake Erie College and focusing on the writing of “Past Master” Andre (nee Alice) Norton. Philanthropy Burton D. Morgan Foundation grant supports entrepreneurship education The Burton D. Morgan Foundation this summer announced a $20,000 grant to the College to develop and pilot new entrepreneurship curriculum and programs to support students through the process from idea to pitch to business plan.

The project, dubbed “Women Entrepreneurs and Innovators,” will provide entrepreneurship and business fundamentals to undergraduate students enrolled in arts and humanities programs, introducing them to new career pathways.

Arts and humanities students will learn the practical business protocols necessary for successful product launch and sustainability. During the 2021-2022 academic year, faculty will build the foundation for this by focusing on curriculum, engaging in professional development, and connecting students to outside resources and mentors.

“Our goal is to weave entrepreneurship ideas and practices into three current classes housed in the art, English and business departments,” said Beth Kavran, DDS, dean of the School of Arts, Sciences and Professional Studies. “We will create a new entrepreneurship research project lab course for students to refine ideas and move them from concept to pitch. This cross-disciplinary approach, open to any major but focusing on the creative arts, will build students’ skills in leadership, team-work and creative problem-solving.”

College receives $1.09 Million STEMM grant State grant funds scholarships, real-world experience New Ursuline College students interested in nursing, art therapy, biology, biochemistry, or chemistry may qualify for up to $4,200 per year in renewable Choose Ohio First (COF) Scholarships, thanks to a $1,092,000 state grant to the College announced in March 2021.

In addition to financial assistance, the COF program involves connecting students to work-based learning experiences including mentorship, job shadowing, internships, and research. Ursuline’s biology, bio-

chemistry, and chemistry programs offer one-on-one mentorship and research opportunities, and the option of pursuing pre-professional concentrations in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, or veterinary medicine.

This is the largest COF grant Ursuline College has been awarded. The $1,092,000 will be granted over five years to recruit and support students during their educational journey. The goal of the COF program is to encourage Ohio residents to enter STEMM fields.

Patricia H-F Moore Scholarship helps nontraditional students succeed

Patricia H-F Moore ’81 attended Ursuline as a nontraditional student and went on pursue graduate school and a fascinating career that included consulting as an expert in organizational behavior, establishing a human resource program for a manufacturer and working for 15 years as a black pearl dealer.

Through her scholarship fund, she pays her success forward, helping other non-traditional students achieve their dreams.

“I don’t think anything makes as much difference in life, especially in a women’s life, as education,” Moore said. “I know it makes a difference for men, too. I have two sons. But women still have a harder time than men getting started in a career and a degree is a great help.”

Moore was a divorced mother in her mid-30s when she enrolled at Ursuline. A gift of stock from her former mother-in-law enabled her to cover her tuition, even as she continued working as a consultant.

“Because of her gift to me, I had all the money I needed to go to college.” But Moore knows most other students are not as fortunate.

To help other nontraditional students, in 2003 Moore’s husband C. Joseph Barnette created the Patricia H-F Moore Endowed Scholarship Fund for Non-traditional Female Students.

for me to assimilate into and the faculty were all very helpful and responsive. I made a living, and my degree from Ursuline certainly moved me along my way and gave me access to grad school, for which I was highly prepared. Ursuline was very helpful in my career.”

Current student Madelyn Knapp is one of the scholarship recipients.

“This scholarship has helped me continue my education while being a non-traditional student,” Knapp said.

“Being a non-traditional student has been challenging at times, but I’m grateful that I continued my educational journey with Ursuline and that I never gave up. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be able to finish my social work degree. Social work is my passion, and I am looking forward to using the knowledge I’ve acquired through Ursuline towards my career.”

Rosanne Casal, CNP, DNP, assistant professor, nursing, presented at the 46th Annual Oncology Nursing Society Congress in April. Her topic was “Thinking Beyond Current Roles of APRNs.” Her presentation highlighted three APRN-run specialty clinics at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland.

Debra Fleming, former Business Department chair, retired after 15 years at Ursuline.

David Foley, PhD, MSN, RN-BC, CNE, MPA, adjunct faculty, nursing, had a book published titled “Zero Days in Safety: One Nurse’s Journey into Trauma and Recovery.”

Gina Messina, PhD, MBA, associate professor, executive director, Institute for Women, Wellness & Work, completed the Emotional Intelligence Certification Training and is now a certified practitioner and consultant with the ability to administer both the Emotional Intelligence Assessment and 360 Tool. She is

implementing this expertise within her leadership role in the Institute and welcomes the opportunity to offer support for faculty and staff development.

Sr. Rosaria Perna, OSU, MFA, former Art Department chair, retired after 28 years at Ursuline.

Mary Lynn Perri, Assistant Dean of Enrollment Management and Financial Aid Operations, received the Sister Pat McCaffrey Staff Excellence Award.

Mary Frances (Mimi) Pipino, PhD, associate professor of English, director of Core Curriculum, has been elected for a second term on the council of the Association for General and Liberal Studies.

She has been invited to serve on the Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School Academic Excellence Committee. She gave a talk and literary workshop through the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage titled “American Stories: Exploring Immigrant Autobiographies” in October.

Melissa Rickey, LPC, CCTP, was promoted to assistant director of graduate admission.

Patricia A. Ursuline welcomes Margaret Mitchell, Deborah Plummer to its Board of Trustees Ursuline College has welcomed two Northeast Ohio women leaders to its Board of Trustees: Margaret Mitchell, CEO of YWCA USA; and Deborah L. Plummer, PhD, psychologist, author, and academic.

Katharine G. Trostel, PhD, assistant professor of English, co-edited the book, “The Venice Ghetto: A Memory Space that Travels,” published by University of Massachusetts Press and due out this winter.

Mary Anne Ursick, former executive assistant and commencement coordinator, retired after 19 years at Ursuline.

Michelle Wiggins, PhD, former professor of mathematics, retired after 19 years at Ursuline.

Caitlin Yeager, PhD, RNC-NIC, CHSE, assistant professor, Nursing Resource and Simulation Center Coordinator, is now a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. This is the gold standard for simulation labs.

YWCA USA announced in October that Mitchell takes over leadership of the national organization in January 2022. During her 10 years at the helm of YWCA Greater Cleveland, she more than doubled the budget, staff, and services of the organization through her leadership, financial acumen, and fundraising. She led the acquisition of Cleveland’s largest homeless emergency women’s shelter.

She also launched the transformation of the YWCA Greater Cleveland Early Learning Center into the only trauma-informed preschool servicing children and families experiencing homelessness.

Plummer, principal consultant with D.L. Plummer & Associates, is a nationally recognized psychologist and diversity solutions thought leader. She served as vice chancellor and chief diversity officer at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care System and a professor in UMMS Departments of Psychiatry, Quantitative Health Sciences, and the Graduate School of Nursing.

She was the founding director of the master’s degree program in diversity management at Cleveland State University. She recently returned to Cleveland from Greater Boston, lives in Lyndhurst with her husband Michael Bussey and has been a longtime member of St. Agnes + Our Lady of Fatima parish.

Athletics Update Back to (the new) normal for athletics WE MADE IT! That was the most-heard phrase around the Ursuline College Athletics Department, and in athletic departments across the country, last May when the 2020-21 athletic year ended.

From athletic trainers, athletic directors, sports information directors, and the student-athletes themselves came a great sigh of relief to finish a year of competition that no one knew if or how long it would last.

A HUGE thank you goes out to our athletic training staff and nursing faculty who helped administer close to 1,000 COVID-19 tests during the 2020-21 academic year. Without their dedication, we would not have been able to have the success that we did.

Student-athletes endured endless testing, quarantines, and heartbreak for the opportunity to compete in the sport that they have been passionate about for so long.

Heading into the 2021-22 school year we are still not out of the woods when it comes to dealing with COVID-19 in college athletics. While the restrictions have changed somewhat, it is still a constant reminder to all studentathletes to be vigilant this year to ensure another safe season for all.

This fall, the volleyball team will field its largest roster yet with 17 student-athletes competing for a Great Midwest Championship to be decided in mid-November. Under third-year head coach Calaeb Campbell, the program looks to take a step forward after last year’s shortened season. With a strong returning senior class, along with an influx of young talent, the season is one that all are looking forward to. Speaking of looking forward to, the team traveled to Alaska in early September to play at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in a tournament featuring other NCAA Division II programs around the country. Along with the opportunity to play against top-notch competition, the team and coaches had the chance to experience the beauty of Alaska and create memories that will last a lifetime.

One of the few sports that remained on schedule in an unprecedented 2020 school year was cross-country, which was able to compete last fall. In their first meet of the 2021 season, the team traveled to Buffalo State and came away with an overall meet win including a first-place finish for freshman Emma Esteves in her first-ever collegiate race. The season will conclude with the G-MAC Championships in late October and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament in Indiana in early November.

The golf team plays a full fall schedule which will carry them into the spring as they prep for the conference championships in April.

Soccer returned to the fall season after playing a 10-game shortened season last spring. With little time to recover from last year, and a shortened post-season, the first two weeks of August were vital to preparing the team for a full-schedule this fall.

While many are adjusting back to the new ‘normal’ that we live in, student-athletes continue to work hard both in the classroom and in their sport to make this fall season the most successful yet. The importance of remaining safe and taking the proper precautions will continue to be at the top of mind for everyone involved to ensure another full season of competition.

Cleveland native Liz Angel (at left) was a triple threat back in elementary school, playing basketball, softball, and volleyball and ultimately settling on the one that was “like a fire in my heart.” She fell in love with volleyball. “The atmosphere when I play, the people I play with, the coaches; everybody just drives me to be the best player I can be.”

Whenever she steps on the court, Angel says, “I want to give it my all,” and, like her Ursuline peers, she pursues her studies with similar devotion.

Despite all the chaos, stress, and uncertainty that came with COVID-19, Angel thrived in her first year as a nursing major.

She posted a 3.96 GPA, becoming one of 94 Ursuline scholarathletes named to the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference team. She’s in very good company inside the Athletics Department, where Athletic Director Cindy McKnight says the average GPA for all Ursuline Arrows team members is 3.55.

That kind of success – not just of an individual, but also of a large and diverse group of individuals – happens only with intention, not by accident.

Intentional Excellence “Academics first” has been the top priority of Ursuline’s Athletics Department ever since McKnight launched it in 1999, she says, and that foundational principle has driven the department’s evolution ever since.

“We always refer to our players as student-athletes,” McKnight says, “because that sends a message to them: They are students before they are athletes.” And this is not just a matter of language; the department’s policies and procedures reinforce the primacy of the “student” in student-athlete.

For example, the Athletics Department requires players to study for a minimum number of hours per week. “No matter what their high school GPA was, all of our incoming first-years are required to do six hours of study tables per week,” says Volleyball Head Coach Calaeb Campbell.

They don’t necessarily have to study collaboratively around the same table, but his players are expected to log the required study hours and mark them down on the sign-off sheet posted on his office door.

Study tables are really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how the Athletics Department supports and encourages the Ursuline Arrows to excel in academics.

That Personal Touch

Ursuline’s coaches are “very hands on,” McKnight says, meeting with their players regularly “to go through each course and figure out, ‘Are you behind in anything?

Do you need help in anything? What’s your current grade in that course?’”

Angel says she finds these meetings helpful, and from the beginning, she was always very straightforward with her assistant coach about what was going on with her studies. “I would tell her if I was having trouble, or if I needed help, and she was very supportive. She was like, ‘If you need help, we can get you a tutor. We just want what’s best for you in the classroom.’”

McKnight is quick to add, “It’s the policy of the Athletics Department that we never miss class for practice.”

And keeping lines of communication open among coaching staff helps ensure no student can fall through the cracks if she is struggling, Coach Campbell says. “We try our best to foster the best environment for our athletes to find success,” he says.

Indeed, McKnight says faculty play a central role in student-athletes’ success. “They are so supportive of athletics, and they know they have our support as well,” McKnight says. “If a faculty member calls me and says, ‘We haven’t seen Sally in a week,’ instantly, I’m on the phone to her coach, her coach is on the phone to her, figuring out what’s happening.”

Of course, to be truly effective, this effort must be supported across campus. Buy-in from faculty, staff, and the administration is crucial and takes many forms.

Some supports Ursuline provides involve simple, pragmatic policies that preserve the centrality of players’ studies and just make things easier on them, says Ursuline President Sr. Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD. “We do scheduling so that the athletes are given classes that end by 3:00 because that way they don’t have to worry about missing class for practice,” she says.

On the faculty side, support can (and does) take additional forms, says Angel. “Our professors at Ursuline are very open with athletes and accommodating with our schedules.”

This is not just about supporting students’ academic success; it’s also about supporting them as a whole person, which of course also reflects the college’s mission, philosophy and approach to education. “Ursuline’s mission promises students a holistic education, which extends beyond the classroom into all areas of personal growth,” says Sr. Chris. “Our studentathletes take to heart the words of our foundress St. Angela when she says, ‘Put your whole soul into the enterprise you have undertaken.’”

Arrows scored big in challenging 2020-2021 academic year • 94 Ursuline student-athletes were named to the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference team for their academic performance.

• English major and education minor Gabrielle Post ’21 was the 2020-21 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She ran cross country and track and completed her undergraduate studies with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is currently pursuing a master’s in education at Ursuline.

• The basketball team scored the fourth highest GPA in the entire NCAA Division II for women’s basketball. The team GPA of 3.78 was the highest in program history.

• The track and field team made the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s All-Academic Team with a team GPA of 3.5. Since 2016, the Arrows have earned this award 10 times.

• The lacrosse team was named an Academic Squad by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association with a team GPA of 3.4, while graduating seniors Lydia Stamper ’21 and Jaclyn Gilmore ’21 were recognized on the IWLCA’s Academic Honor Roll.

Paying NO Attention to the Elephant in the Room Student-athletes are tasked with juggling their academics and athletics, most also have clinical placements or internships, some have part-time jobs, and all have required service work that the Athletics Department expects them to perform each year. As competitors and women who strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives, they work hard, and the pressure is considerable.

While athletes’ mental health has been big international news in recent months, the concern is not new to Ursuline. Everyone in the tight-knit College community is vigilant, on the lookout for students who may be struggling to maintain their emotional equilibrium. Sr. Chris says Ursuline student-athletes benefit especially from close relationships with their coaches.

Because they know their players so well, Sr. Chris says, coaches may recognize that a player is struggling and point that student in the direction of the services and counselors available on campus.

Coach Campbell places mental health front and center in his interactions with players from day one. “I am very transparent with my students about how important mental health is and I let our students know that if they are in need, we have services available to them.”

The Bottom Line At the core of all the programs and policies that support Ursuline’s student-athletes, and embedded in the philosophy and mission of the College and its Athletics Department, is something very basic and incredibly powerful. It’s something that every parent who wonders whether Ursuline would be a good place for their student-athlete daughter should know.

“Your daughter is not going to be a number at Ursuline or in the Athletics Department,” McKnight says. “We will help take care of her. We will help her grow as a young woman and as a leader. She’ll gain confidence, learn to work with others toward a common goal, time-management skills, and what it means to be an Arrow. And if she is struggling, we will be here for her.”

Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, In honor of the College’s 150th Anniversary, I’d like to share some fascinating Ursuline College Alumnae Association history. The Alumnae Association was established in 1925 by three laywomen and four religious. The first presidency was decided by a coin toss, with then-recent graduate Genevieve Smith Ricketts ’25 emerging as winner.

In the beginning, the association hosted teas honoring graduating classes and worked in the community. Today, the Alumnae Association members offer students mentoring and career guidance, present gifts to graduating seniors, and volunteer at commencement to welcome the newest members.

The community service tradition continues with our participation in Make A Difference Day (we’ll be boxing food at the Cleveland Food Bank later this fall).

Since its beginning, the Alumnae Association has had over 17,292 Ursuline and St. John College members. It has had 74 Alumnae Association Board presidents and 151 Alumnae Board members.

There is really no way, however, to accurately measure the contributions of time, talent, and treasure made by our 17,000+ alumnae/i.

When the College was raising funds to build the Pepper Pike campus, alumnae held a drive and raised $125,000 for Grace Hall, equivalent to over $1,023,000 in 2021 dollars! Since then, alumnae have been a driving force behind the building and recent renovation of the Ralph M. Besse Library, as well as the Bishop Anthony M. Pilla Student Learning Center, the Sister Diana Stano Athletic Center after the 2013 tornado, and the recent renovation of the St. Angela Merici Garden in front of the Monsignor Mullen Building.

According to the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, women generally give to things they are vested in, that they have empathy for, that they have a relationship with, and to causes that they know have an immediate impact.

They do not typically donate for status. When women serve on boards, they are likely to voice their political and philosophical beliefs in helping others.

Those generalizations certainly hold true at Ursuline. Thank you for supporting a vital, women-focused Ursuline education. Thank you for Ursuline’s 150 years of transforming students for service, leadership, and professional excellence in the tradition of the Ursuline Sisters. You are the reason Ursuline College is celebrating 150 years. Give yourself a hand!

Welcome 3 new alumnae board members and two new officers The Alumnae Board of Ursuline College welcomes the three newest members and two new officers. Chantel Wilcox, below at left, is a two-time graduate of Ursuline College, earning her undergraduate in health care administration in 2012 and her MBA in 2013. Wilcox is the Director of Anchor Strategies with the Cleveland Clinic East Region. Alanna Nichols, below in the center, earned her undergraduate from Cleveland State

University and her MBA from Ursuline College in 2011.

Nichols is the principal people developer with Capital Talent Development Group and a DEI facilitator. Carlie Beal, below at right, earned her degree in 2019 as a biology major and is currently in medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University with interest in geriatric health and urban health within the Cleveland community.

Two new board officers Jodi Olivo is the new chairperson of the Alumnae Recognition Committee. Olivo is a 1990 graduate earning her degree in Business Administration. The new chairperson of the Development Committee is Kelly L. Berry. Berry earned her bachelor’s degree in legal studies in 2005 and her MBA in 2013.

2021 Amadeus Rappe, Crystal award winners announced The Alumnae Board of the Alumnae Association of Ursuline~St. John College announces two accomplished and dedicated professionals are recipients of the 2021 Alumnae Awards.

Amadeus Rappe Outstanding Alumnae Award recipient Rosemary (Bulina) Vicini ’71 exemplifies ideals of public service Concluding a decorated 40-year career of high-level service to the FBI, Rosemary S. (Bulina) Vicini ’71 looks back on her Ursuline education with gratitude. “Without the education, support and guidance received during my four years at Ursuline I would never had been able to … secure a Special Agent position with the FBI,” she wrote this summer. “The foundation I was given at Ursuline has proven to be invaluable and I will always be grateful for the wonderful faculty and classmates that made it so memorable.

A year after graduation, Vicini was named executive director of the American Cancer Society, Western Pennsylvania, where she served for nine years, dramatically improving community service, education, and fund raising. Then from 1981-2007 she served as special agent in the FBI, gleaning several exceptional service awards. From 2007-2021, she consulted as an FBI subject matter expert in foreign intelligence, security, and counterterrorism.

Vicini earned the Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General’s Integrity Award, the Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Division Exceptional Service Award, and a commendation from the Baltimore County Council for “generosity of time and talents and volunteer service, and for exemplifying the highest ideals of public service.” She received the Amadeus Rappe Award at Homecoming in September.

Established by the Alumnae Association in 1971, the Centennial Year of Ursuline College, the Amadeus Rappe Award is presented annually to an outstanding graduate of Ursuline College or St. John College. The award is named in memory of Bishop Amadeus Rappe, the first Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland, who was responsible for bringing the Ursuline Sisters to Cleveland in 1850 from Boulogne-sur-Mer, France.

Beyond Ursuline, Fortuna has been an active volunteer in professional organizations including the Society of Pediatric Nurses, the Ohio League for Nursing, the Greater Cleveland Emergency Nurses Association, and the Northeast Ohio Clinical Nurse Specialists. She serves on professional committees at MetroHealth, where she is a nurse practitioner in pediatric GI and rheumatology.

She is an active volunteer in her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta, and in her parish as a eucharistic minister.

Crystal Award recipient Suzanne M. Fortuna is “a natural servant leader”

The recipient of the 2021 Crystal Award for her service to the college is Suzanne M Fortuna ’92, ’03 MSN, ’04, ’17 DNP, APRN BC, PHCNS, FNP. A strong and loyal supporter and advocate of Ursuline College, Fortuna has served the Alumnae Board for 11 years in various leadership positions including President from 2018–2020.

Fortuna led Alumnae Board committees including the Alumnae Recognition Committee, the Homecoming Committee, and the Membership Committee. She has served the Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions as a clinical adjunct faculty member and a preceptor for MSN students, as well as a mentor to Ursuline College nursing students.

In her nomination of Fortuna, Alumnae Board Chair Sheronda Peterson ’10 MMT said, “Suzanne has always been a natural servant-leader and has dedicated not only her time but has also shared her wisdom with one of our most valuable assets—our students.”

In the afternoon, tour guide and fourth-year art therapy major Samantha Utterback provided a tour of the Ursuline College campus.

Attendees toured the Bishop Pilla Learning Center, including the beautiful display of photographs and memorabilia assembled by Professor Bari Stith’s students; the Sr. Diana Stano Athletic Center; the renovated Besse Library; and the Wasmer Gallery, recently relocated to the former Mullen commuter lounge.

All St. John College event celebrated all things St. John St. John College alumnae from the 1950s to the 1970s gathered in June to remember and celebrate their beloved school.

The event started with 18 alumnae and guests touring Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions (the current-day manifestation of the St. John nursing program), followed by an update from the art therapy program, and then a tour of the newly renovated Besse Library. Immediately following, the St. John grads braved the rain to see the St. John College Memorial Garden in Ursuline’s quad.

The following day, more than 90 alumnae, guests, and friends of the College attended a celebration brunch at LockKeepers in Independence, Ohio. The morning began with a prayer lead by St. John alumna JoAnn Fellner ’78SJ, ’03 MSN. Attendees solemnly remembered those alums they lost since the last reunion with a reading of their names by five St. John College alumnae followed by a moment of silence.

From stained glass to statue restoration, two Ursuline grads contribute their creativity at Henninger’s

So much for the stereotype of the starving artist!

Two recent Ursuline art graduates landed jobs right out of college – one in 2015, one just this summer – as full-time, professional artists.

Joanne Abruzzino ’15 and Mary Abuamsha ’21 are both working at Henninger’s, a fourth-generation family-owned business that sells religious articles and creates and restores religious art.

Henninger’s President Paul Cousineau said, with both hires, he “needed someone who was good with colors and not afraid to get their hands dirty, someone who was willing to jump in on all sorts of projects.”

That’s exactly what he found in Abruzzino and Abuamsha and it’s what they love best about the work.

“The variability of each project makes coming into the shop so exciting,” said Abuamsha. “One day I could be cutting stained glass, and the next I could be repairing a statue. There is such an abundance of techniques to learn.”

Abruzzino echoed that sentiment. “I do everything from painting statues, to wood finishing, interior design, mosaics, metal refinishing, stained glass.

We do everything pertaining to churches,” she said.

“Mastering a mechanical side of thinking was the most difficult and rewarding part of the job. I’ve learned how to use power tools, like a scroll saw and a big wet saw to cut marble for custom mosaics. I’ve learned soldering. I acquired the confidence to buy a house, knowing I’d be able to fix things myself.”

The key connections that led Cousineau to Ursuline were Development Director Patrick Riley, long-time Art Department Chair Sister Diane Therese Pinchot, OSU, MFA (both of whom are now retired from the College), current Wasmer Gallery Director Anna Arnold, and art faculty member Sister Rosaria Perna, OSU, MFA.

Abuamsha, too, is grateful for her Ursuline education.

“Ursuline prepared me to take chances and to push myself out of my comfort zone. I accepted the job at Henninger’s not knowing much at all about stained glass but knew it would be a great opportunity to learn a craft that was completely new to me. During my time at Ursuline, Sr. Rosaria Perna and [current Art Department Chair] Clark DeCapite taught me to never be afraid of a challenge and that hard work does pay off. I always felt so supported and appreciated by them both. They made me a well-rounded artist by encouraging me to constantly try out new media.”

“With the connections that Ursuline and Sister Diane had available, I obtained a job in my field within a month of graduation,” said Abruzzino. “My education at Ursuline polished me as an artist and as a person while I’ve remained true to my spunky self. Upon graduating I was unsure of the path that my life was about to take, but with the connections to Ursuline and God, somehow, I was rewarded for my hard work and struggle.”

Comprehensive skills, strong work ethic, a love of artistic variety, and a grateful heart? Sounds like these two were perfect matches for Henninger’s.

Calling all writers Another way we are celebrating our sesquicentennial is by opening our Inscape writing contest to alumnae/i and local high school students (in addition to students, faculty, and staff) and offering cash prizes of $150. The Inscape editorial board is looking for poems, short stories, essays, or memoirs that align with College values, including empowerment, education, spirituality, innovation, and legacy.
