PACE UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT 2023

Monday, May 15, 2023

Message from the President

May 15, 2023

Dear Pace graduates, parents, families, and friends: You did it.

To the students in the Pace University Class of 2023: You worked hard, you set goals, and you achieved them. You took advantage of the opportunities offered to you, and despite unprecedented challenges, you achieved what you set out to. We couldn’t be prouder of you. You deserve every bit of praise we can give you for this great accomplishment.

To the parents, families, and friends supporting these graduates: You’re part of their success, too. You helped them do the work, helped them be their best, and helped them get to this ceremony. On the graduates’ behalf, I want to thank you for everything you’ve done and will continue to do.

Students, you have whole lives and so many opportunities ahead of you. You have grown and explored here at Pace, but your worlds are about to get immeasurably larger. You’ll have careers, families, and opportunities that you never imagined. As you grow and change, as the world changes, the skills you learned here will always stay with you: how to think, how to learn, and how to be a valued part of your community. I know the perseverance and resourcefulness that brought you to today have demonstrated that you will accomplish anything you set your mind to.

As we send you into the world, I want you to remember Pace and the people you encountered here. This place and this community have made you who you are. You are part of the Pace family, and you’ll always be welcome here. Career Services will always be available to you. The Pace University Alumni Association will keep you connected. We will be here to support you as you move through your lives, and I hope you will help us create opportunities for the next generation of Pace students.

I can’t wait to see what you’ll do next.

Sincerely,

Telfar Clemens ’08

Telfar Clemens ’08 has lived a classic Pace success story—and done it with his own inimitable style.

Clemens was born to Liberian parents in Queens; his father had earned an MBA at Pace a few years earlier. The family returned to their home country when Telfar was very young, but in 1990 the First Liberian Civil War forced them to return to the United States. At P.S. 206, a teacher drew monograms for every student in the class: for Clemens, a T inside a round C. Today, it’s the logo for his wildly successful fashion brand, Telfar.

When Clemens arrived at Pace in the fall of 2003, he was already designing his own creations. While he studied at the Lubin School of Business, he also dove into the downtown worlds of music, culture, and fashion. In the model of countless Pace generations before him, he hustled: He got up early for his classes, he spent his afternoons working on his collections, and worked as a DJ at night to earn money. Biking around the city, he was inspired by street styles; looking at his friends, he saw gender lines breaking down. In 2005, while still a student, he founded his label, producing accessible, unisex items built on principles of fluidity and inclusivity.

He graduated from Pace with a degree in business management, and he quickly established himself as an insider’s designer, with his clothes worn by people who worked in the industry. In 2017, he won the coveted CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award, and he invested its prize of $400,000 in production of the Telfar Shopping Bag—now lovingly known as “the Bushwick Birkin” for its status as an accessible icon.

The Telfar brand’s tagline is “Not for you, for everyone.” As the label has grown, it has stayed true to its roots. Clemens controls all his own production. New releases are made available, democratically, to those who sign up online. The bags are made from vegan leather.

Telfar Clemens is a fashion force to be reckoned with. But he’s done it his own way, and he hasn’t strayed from his roots. When he’s in New York City, he still lives in the family home in LeFrak City in Queens, where he started out all those years ago. He is a model and an inspiration to countless young people, and especially to students at Pace today.

For his creative and inspiring vision, for his hard work and success, and for his commitment to accessibility, community, and lifting up others, Pace University is proud to confer upon Telfar Clemens the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereunto.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, JD

Senator Elizabeth Warren is a fearless consumer advocate who has made her life’s work the fight for middle class families. She was elected to the United States Senate on November 6, 2012, by the people of Massachusetts.

Sen. Warren is recognized as one of the nation’s top experts on bankruptcy and the financial pressures facing middle class families. She is widely credited for the original thinking, political courage, and relentless persistence that led to the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. President Barack Obama asked her to set up the new agency to hold Wall Street banks and other financial institutions accountable, and to protect consumers from financial tricks and traps often hidden in mortgages, credit cards, and other financial products.

In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Sen. Warren served as Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Her independent and tireless efforts to protect taxpayers, to hold Wall Street accountable, and to ensure tough oversight of both the Bush and Obama Administrations won praise from both sides of the aisle.

Sen. Warren was a law professor for more than 30 years, including nearly 20 years as the Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. The graduating class at Harvard twice recognized her with the Sacks-Freund Award for excellence in teaching. She taught courses on commercial law, contracts, and bankruptcy. She also wrote more than 100 articles and 10 books, including three national best-sellers: A Fighting Chance, The Two-Income Trap, and All Your Worth National Law Journal named her one of the Most Influential Lawyers of the Decade, Time magazine has named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World four times, and she has been honored by the Massachusetts Women’s Bar Association with the Lelia J. Robinson Award.

Sen. Warren is a graduate of the University of Houston and Rutgers School of Law.

For her dedication to the law, for her commitment to public service, and for her inspiring example to others both within and outside the legal profession, Pace University is honored to confer upon Sen. Elizabeth Warren the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereunto.

Opportunitas in Action Award

The Opportunitas in Action Award, bestowed by the president of Pace University, recognizes a leader who has made innovative, positive contributions to the community in the spirit of Pace’s motto, Opportunitas

Aldrin Enis

President, One Hundred Black Men of New York

Aldrin Enis is dedicated to making a difference.

He is president of One Hundred Black Men of New York, a group created by prominent community leaders in 1963 with the mission of achieving meaningful gains for the Black community in New York City. It is the founding chapter of what is now a national community-based mentoring group, One Hundred Black Men of America.

For nearly a decade, Pace University has partnered with One Hundred Black Men of New York to host an annual cohort of the group’s Junior One Hundred Legacy Program, which provides mentorship and fosters leadership and collaboration skills among BIPOC young men from New York City high schools while exposing them to postsecondary educational opportunities, financial literacy, and both traditional and nontraditional career paths.

Elected the group’s 11th president at the end of 2020, Enis confronted the unique challenges of leading it through COVID-19, and he ensured that its partnership with Pace continued despite the pandemic. The Junior One Hundred Program lived on virtually for two years, and in 2023 returned in person. Fully committed to Pace’s longstanding mission of Opportunitas, Enis speaks regularly of the importance of expanding opportunities for BIPOC youth and of the power of higher education.

As OHBM’s president, Enis is prioritizing expanding the group’s youth and adolescent programs while heightening awareness of mental health needs and resources for young people. He has encouraged the OHBM staff working on the Junior One Hundred Legacy program to further engage with Pace and to take an intentional approach in planning the program’s content. He is eager to see the program expand further and serve even more young people.

Enis holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the State University of New York at Albany and a Master of Business Administration from Seton Hall University. He exemplifies the ideals of Opportunitas, and we are very pleased to present him with Pace University’s 2023 Opportunitas in Action Award.

New York City

During her time at Pace, Marisa Medici has distinguished herself as a gifted student with a strong commitment to advocacy and a “go-getter” spirit.

Marisa has taken part in many programs at Pace, such as the Leadership Engagement and Action Program for first-generation college students; twice as Co-chair of the Program Selection Subcommittee for Social Justice Week; as tour guide for Pace’s Welcome Center; and as an outreach volunteer for the Center for Community Action and Research, to name a few. Despite this wide roster of responsibility, she has remained committed to her studies as a double major and is graduating with a 3.98 GPA.

Marisa has also displayed a passion for civic engagement through voter education. She’s worked as a Vote Everywhere Ambassador at the Andrew Goodman Foundation, where she registered 500 students to vote, and as a political public statements research intern at Vote Smart. In 2021, Marisa authored legislature and successfully lobbied to declare Election Day an asynchronous class day at Pace, a motion that was passed unanimously. Thanks to her efforts, Pace students will now be able to vote without compromising their course schedule.

Outside of Pace, Marisa furthered her political education as a constituent services and public affairs intern for Senate Democratic Majority Leader Charles Schumer and continued to expand her prowess in the field of public relations through several internships. To prepare herself for her intended career in human rights advocacy, Marisa completed a semester abroad, doing extensive human rights fieldwork in Nepal, Jordan, and Ecuador.

As a UN Academic Impact Millennium Fellow—an honor granted to only six percent of students globally—she and two other students tackled food insecurity on campus with the creation of Fare Trade, a mutual aid program that allows students to reallocate their meal plan funds to food insecure students. Fare Trade launched on the New York City Campus in 2021 and is now being developed on the Westchester Campus. Marisa also joined the administration’s food insecurity task force to continue serving as a liaison for food insecure students.

Marisa’s commitment to civic engagement, community service, and political advocacy have set her apart as a globally-minded leader with a bright future in advocacy.

For exemplifying the core values of Opportunitas and Pace University, today we honor Marisa Medici with the 2023 Trustee Award.

During her time at Pace University, Tinuade McClish maintained a steadfast commitment to serving the Pace Community through exemplary leadership, service, and academic excellence.

Earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology alongside a minor in creative writing, Tinuade has been able to balance her exceptional academic pedigree with a steadfast commitment to leadership and service outside the classroom. As a model student at the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, Tinuade earned a 3.83 cumulative GPA while maintaining an active, visible role as a campus community leader. As an exemplary resident assistant, Tinuade has been dedicated to cultivating positive living environments by promoting social and academic well-being, and taking the time to understand individual student’s needs, aiding in managing crisis situations and resolution. In simple terms, she has proven time and time again that she’s there for her fellow Pace students.

Tinuade has immersed herself in several community-building endeavors during her time at Pace. As an excelsior scholar mentor, Tinuade has made strong connections with undergraduate BIPOC, working to encourage positive, productive college experiences. Through her role as Vice President of Communications of the Student Government Association, she ensured that the machinery of student government was able to function properly and effectively and built relationships and skills to advocate for student causes. And as a writing consultant for Pace’s Learning Commons, Tinuade leveraged her skill set to improve students’ motivation, learning, and success, helping to develop students into independent learners and promoting a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

In the educational realm, Tinuade has consistently challenged herself by exploring her academic interests outside of the classroom. She participated in the Pace’s Student Faculty Undergraduate Research Award program, working with Associate Professor Courtney Gosnell to develop independent research examining how politically divisive media alters the way we perceive close friends and family members with opposing political views. Tinuade earned the Provost’s Research Award, offered to only a handful of students each year, for both the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 academic years.

For her commitment to Pace and her extraordinary accomplishments in leadership and academic achievement, it is a pleasure to award Tinuade McClish the 2023 Trustee Award.

The Community Service Award is presented to the graduating student or students whose active contributions to the life of the University community and to the endeavors of our neighbors in the surrounding community most admirably embody an appreciation for the value of social responsibility.

New York City

Tasfia Rahim’s tireless commitment to social responsibility and community service has not only made a tangible difference in her community, but also helped her peers engage with activism.

In 2020, Tasfia partnered with the Center for Community Action and Research (CCAR) to increase voter education ahead of the presidential election. Her commitment to voter education continued well past the election as she continued to conduct online information sessions, course presentations, and trainings about local elections.

Tasfia further committed to serving her community by stepping into the role of Student Projects Coordinator for CCAR, where she worked with more than 50 students individually to match them with volunteer experiences. As part of this role, Tasfia also led a student-run advocacy campaign in support of the Immigrant Worker Freedom Act, which would provide citizenship to the nearly 2,000 undocumented workers who participated in 9/11 cleanup efforts in New York City.

She continued her record of service as the student co-chair of the Social Justice Week marketing committee in 2022 and partnered with CCAR as a volunteer for environmental nonprofits. Outside of Pace, Tasfia has interned with multiple local organizations, including as a SNAP navigator intern at the Council of the People’s Organization in Brooklyn. At the Asian American Federation, she conducted research on anti-Asian hate legislation and presented three policy recommendations to New York State.

Some of her most impactful work has been done for the benefit of her Pace Community. Tasfia was selected as a UN Academic Impact Millennium Fellow, an honor offered to only six percent of students globally, and decided to address food insecurity on campus. She and two other Fellows created Fare Trade, a program that facilitates the redistribution of meal plan funds to food insecure students. Last year, over $600 was redistributed and Fare Trade is continuing to make an impact on the New York City Campus, with efforts underway to bring the program to Westchester. Though her Fellowship concluded, Tasfia remains a dedicated custodian to the program, also serving on two subcommittees on the new Food Insecurity Task Force.

Tasfia’s unwavering dedication and infectious enthusiasm for community service has made a significant impact on her community that will continue to improve the lives of her peers.

For exemplifying the core values of Opportunitas and Pace University, today we honor Tasfia Rahim with the 2023 Community Service Award.

2023 Community Service Award

The Community Service Award is presented to the graduating student or students whose active contributions to the life of the University community and to the endeavors of our neighbors in the surrounding community most admirably embody an appreciation for the value of social responsibility.

Pleasantville

Alexa Slack has made a significant impact while at Pace. Earning a bachelor’s degree in health science and a minor in public health, Alexa has excelled admirably in the classroom—earning an impressive 3.96 GPA and establishing herself as one of Pace’s highest achieving students. Yet, it is her commitment to service that has demonstrated that a well-rounded Pace education is not solely confined to the classroom.

Alexa has long been an advocate for student needs, empowering her fellow Pace Setters to thrive in their own undergraduate experiences. Through her role as a University 101 Peer Leader, Alexa co-taught and mentored 21 first-year Honors students with assistance from a faculty advisor, equipping them with the know-how and support to succeed socially and academically. By working as an Honors First-Year Interest Group Mentor, she hosted monthly mentoring sessions with 50 first-year Honors students, and planned events and activities to build and foster community involvement. In addition, as the Pforzheimer Honors College Council’s Community Service Liaison, Alexa coordinated community service activities between the Pforzheimer Honors College and other University groups, working with other council members to brainstorm and facilitate events.

Throughout her collegiate career Alexa maintained the foresight and drive to bring her fellow students together over meaningful issues, which was no small feat due to the many challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her role as the President of the National Service Sorority Gamma Sigma Sigma further exemplifies her commitment to this type of service, as she regularly collaborated with members and philanthropies, raising thousands of dollars for altruistic causes. Outside of Pace, Alexa has most recently served as a Health Justice Intern for Westchester Medical Center, where she has conducted advocacy efforts and strategy development surrounding women’s health initiatives.

Alexa’s tireless commitment to service for others has extended to several other initiatives, including working as a Legislative Advocacy Changemaker Intern for PUSH for Empower, and helping to implement wellness programs in schools as an intern for HealthCorps. When it comes to advocating for the well-being of others, Alexa has consistently demonstrated she is up for the challenge.

For exemplifying the core values of Opportunitas and Pace University, today we honor Alexa Slack with the 2023 Community Service Award.

2023 Elisabeth Haub School of Law Dean’s Award

The Elisabeth Haub School of Law Dean’s Award is presented to a graduating student in the full and/or part-time program who best demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, and service to the law school and community.

Kaitlin Lauren Flores

Kaitlin Flores has been an exemplary student leader during her time at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law, demonstrating outstanding commitment to academic excellence, public service, community spirit, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As a first-generation law student herself, Kaitlin founded the First-Generation Law Students Association (FGLSA) at Haub Law to create a space to help first-generation law students navigate law school successfully and have a community to grow and learn from. During her three years at Haub Law, she was also actively involved in LALSA, ELS, and Lambda. In addition to her campus involvement, Kaitlin is also involved with MetroLALSA, the Dominican Bar Association, and LatinoJustice.

Throughout the course of her studies at Haub Law, Kaitlin participated in the Food and Farm Business Law Clinic and the Access to Justice Lab. She was also a NYC Bar Corporate Law Diversity Fellowship recipient and is in the process of publishing her Law Review Note with the ABA Urban Lawyer.

A source of motivation for Kaitlin to attend law school was to break barriers and amplify the representation of Latinx lawyers in the profession, thereby increasing equity and contributing to diversity. Over the last three years, through her involvement and contributions to the Haub Law community, Kaitlin has broken many barriers. To her, the concept of “justice” is important and includes righting the wrongs of the past, ensuring those wrongs do not reoccur, and continuing to strive for a more equitable, more representative future.

For her demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and service to the law school and community, the Elisabeth Haub School of Law honors Kaitlin Flores with the 2023 Dean’s Award.

Chad J. Weiss

Chad Weiss has been an exemplary student leader during his time at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law, demonstrating outstanding commitment to academic excellence, public service, relationship building, and community spirit.

Chad is a member of the first graduating class of students enrolled in the Law School’s Flex JD Scheduling Option. After running his own small business, Chad became aware of the added value that a law degree brings with it. With a passion for helping others, Chad plans to use his first-hand knowledge of running a business along with the newly gained asset of his law degree to assist individuals in their own entrepreneurial pursuits.

During his time at Haub Law, Chad continuously gave back to the community. He organized several donation drives for toys and food to benefit Feeding Westchester, The United Way, and many other local charities. Additionally, Chad represented the FLEX students as an active member of the Student Bar Association (SBA). For him, the most impactful academic experience was his participation in the Food and Farm Business Law Clinic.

Chad describes the best part of his journey at Haub Law as the relationships he has formed with his classmates in the 2023 FLEX class. Additionally, as a working student and entrepreneur, Chad has been able to apply the knowledge he learned in his classes to the work projects that he was engaged in at the time. He looks forward to using his law degree and is confident that it will allow him to advance his career with the bonus of gaining an invaluable education.

For his demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and service to the law school and community, the Elisabeth Haub School of Law honors Chad Weiss with the 2023 Dean’s Award.

Academic Regalia

The history of academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra to wear gowns. In England, during the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. It is still a question whether academic dress finds its sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or in civilian dress. Gowns may have been worn for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars, while hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until replaced by the skull cap. In time, the skull cap was replaced by the mortarboard caps that are used widely today.

In 1895, the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume was formed to establish a suitable code of academic dress for the colleges and universities of the United States. The academic costume code recognizes three types of gowns, usually black. The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. The gown for the master’s degree has long, closed sleeves with the arc of a circle near the bottom. A doctor’s gown is faced with velvet, and has full, round, open sleeves bearing three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The velvet facing and bars may either be black or the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. The hood is made of a material identical to the gown and is lined in the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree. When the institution has more than one color, the chevron is used to introduce the second color. For Pace University, the official colors found in the hood are blue and gold. Colored velvet or velveteen binds the hood and indicates the subject to which the degree pertains.

For all academic purposes, the colors associated with the various subjects at Pace University are as follows:

Honor Societies

Pace University strives to foster intellectual growth, ethical maturity, civic responsibility, and professionalism in specific disciplines. Honor societies at Pace University play a vital role in advancing these goals. All national and international honor societies recognize academic excellence, promote scholarship, and enrich the educational experience. Members benefit from fellowship between students, faculty, and active professionals. Honor societies are keys that open doors to graduate school, career opportunities, and professional development. Membership in an honor society bestows honor, recognition, and lifetime distinction.

Students who are members in national and international honor societies are distinguished by wearing a colored cord around their neck. The colors and the honor society they represent are as follows:

Veterans Recognition

Traditional Symbols

In addition to the regalia and finery customarily worn by University faculty and officers, formal academic ceremonies often include colorful signs and symbols representing the history and traditions of university life as well as specific aspects of the university being celebrated.

Flags

At Pace University ceremonies, in addition to the flags of the United States, the state of New York, and of the University, the president is represented by a swallow-tail flag of a blue field with a gold border bearing the University seal in pale blue, ringed by the inscription “Office of the President.”

Each school/college within the University (College of Health Professions, Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, Elisabeth Haub School of Law, Lubin School of Business, the School of Education, and the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems) is signified by a blue and gold banner with the school/college name and University logo.

Maces

The mace was developed as an armor-crushing weapon in the 13th century. Battle axes and maces were formidable chivalric tools of combat and warfare. They became symbols of authority, commanding attention and respect for the bearer, and were associated with those responsible for protecting the king’s person. By the 16th century, maces were ornately designed and decorated with jewels and precious metals, often crafted with elegant architectural motifs.

At Pace University, the dean for students carries two maces. One is a replica of a Gothic battle mace with a head formed by five flanges, topped by a fluted conical finial. The rondel consists of a rusticated wood shaft attached to a metal cylindrical base, all of which is brass plated and inscribed with the words “Pace University.” The mace was introduced in 1968 at the first commencement held on the Pleasantville Campus. The second mace was first used in 1927 at commencement exercises of Good Counsel College, which became the College of White Plains and which was consolidated in 1975 with Pace University. The brass and wood mace is topped by a sphere and a formée cross with a garnet at its center. The rondel, consisting of two brass sections separated by a ribbed wooden grip, has a sphere at its base, which bears the inscription “Pace University.” University marshals carry batons that represent the schools/colleges of the University. The University seal is mounted on each end of the baton, which is made of American walnut. The name of each person who has served as dean of the school/college is engraved on a brass plate affixed to the school/college baton.

Verge

The verge, an elongated mace or staff carried by the grand marshal, is made of Honduran rosewood. It is topped by a replica of a bronze-coated copper globe made in 1510, which is the earliest existing representation depicting the discoveries of Christopher Columbus in the Western Hemisphere. Beneath the globe, each Pace campus is represented by ribbons of the campus color: green for New York City, blue for Pleasantville, and red for White Plains. The upper section of the shaft is inlaid with rare woods representing the four reaches of the world: ebony, teak, olive, and oak.

The Centennial Medallion (retired)

The medallion was struck in commemoration of the University’s Centennial in 2006. Both the Chair of the Board of Trustees and the University President wore the Centennial Medallion, which is made of bronze and layered with silver plate. The face of the medallion is the Pace University seal and the reverse bears the engraved image of the Centennial mark.

The Centennial Staff

The University President carries an ornate staff that was crafted in 2006 to commemorate the University’s Centennial. The Centennial Medallion set in brass tops the staff, which is almost six feet in height and made ofsolid wood.

The presidential flag, verge, and school/college batons were designed by John Mulgrew, Professor of Fine Arts. The school/college banners were designed by Aliatu Burke. The Centennial staff was designed by David Grupper. The Centennial staff was crafted by Michael Fayed, Master Wood Turner.
