The World in a Village Gertraud Unger is happy. Although she never intended to become a farmer, today this former bank clerk finds it impossible to imagine a more beautiful place than here on the Oberdürnberg, just outside Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee, which has been her home for the last 33 years. Operated as a full-time business, the farm is definitely not stingy on space and offers a wealth of potential activities for “city folk” who are happy to escape their rental apartments in the city.

DEAR GUESTS,
SWAPPING A BANK COUNTER FOR A COWSHED. No, this isn’t some concept for a new show on Austrian TV. But it does require some explanation. There was only one reason Gertraud Unger never wanted to become a farmer. Her keenly aware child’s mind saw how hard her parents would work and how little time they had left over for the family. “When you grow up on a farm, being a farmer isn’t necessarily top of your list”, she says in retrospect. “The benefits are something I only became aware of later”, says Gertraud, with an undertone of contentment in her voice, sitting on a cozy chair in the house she will eventually move out of. The Oberdürnberg Hof hasn’t officially been handed over yet, but in two, three years, that time will come. Her son and daughter-in-law are already well integrated into the workflow. And four generations all do their bit to guarantee a happy life for everyone. The future is assured. Which is a good thing, especially when you realize that practically every second farmer in the area has been forced to “shut up shop”. The story of farms dying out isn’t merely some contrived dark counterbalance to those cutesy commercials featuring talking pigs and their “pet” farmer, designed to idealize the farming profession and promote a rural idyll. No, it’s something that actually happens every day, even in Salzburger Land. Though not here on the Oberdürnberg.
IT‘S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START ....

Gertraud grew up on a farm that was barely 5 kilometers from the Oberdürnberg and no less beautiful. Back in those days, they had even more contact with guests, not least because farming families would often move out of their own living spaces so as to be able to rent them out to holidaymakers; a practice pretty common in the Alpine world. The divide between people from the city and country could always be clearly felt: the former wore prettier clothes and had the latest technology, such as video cameras. Quite a sensation in this Flachgau village. “It always took a few years for those developments to reach us here in the country”, explains Gertraud. For their part, however, guests tended to be quite generous, often sending lavish gifts to their host families throughout the year.
In the mind of Gertraud Unger, sharing the sense of freedom and important values is an integral aspect of what farm holidays are all about. But you can only truly share those things if you are also a full-time farmer. A few cows, essentially “planted” outside to decorate the landscape, simply wouldn’t be enough. “Here with us, the barn door is open every single day”, clarifies the constantly active farmer’s wife, highlighting the fact that you will encounter a family member in and around the barn 365 days out of the year. Guests value being able to peek behind the scenes. On the one hand, they’re excited to experience it for themselves. On the other, they want to show their children where milk comes from and everything that goes into producing it. So, does that all lead to greater awareness amongst (future) consumers? Gertraud is convinced it does. Beyond a shadow of a doubt. But for the occasional change of pace, this farm on the Oberdürnberg offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities or total relaxation. And should it ever rain (longer than usual), the cultural capital of western Austria lies just 11 kilometers away: Salzburg City is yet another reason why guests from Cape Town, Sydney, Oklahoma and Japan have also found their way to Schöngumprechting. “We never get to go anywhere”, Gertraud states, though without a hint of regret, merely clarifying that holidays are an alien concept for herself and her husband. “Instead, the world comes to us!”

Once she starts talking, she can’t be stopped whether it’s about life, the farm, family, and her guests…always in a friendly manner of course. Maria’s life motto is: “Whatever I do, I do it well”. This is one reason why she was skeptical at

The reason the way things turned out how they are now was a summer festival in Koppl. Without knowing for sure, I’m assuming this festival was the exact opposite of the Salzburg Festival. It was not a high culture event but a celeb-free, laid-back country celebration. At the disco party in the above-mentioned town, Maria met her future husband. In Ebenau, where being a farmer is still of great importance, her future-husband was surprised that the young Salzburg native didn’t recognize
him as a big deal. “He is still annoyed to this day that I didn’t go home with him right away”, she says laughing and reminiscing as she sits at a large wooden table in the parlor as though she had never lived anywhere else. All the other girls whispered about him and were taken with this farmer, who managed to win Maria over. This reads like a cliché-laden episode of a country romance, of which there are many. However, this beautiful adventure is one of real life.
“I DON’T FIT IN WITH CLICHÉS.” Maria has her rough edges and isn’t a clichéd, picture-perfect hostess, but she has adapted to her role and believes that a host shouldn’t just simply be present but should be friendly and nice. There are many books floating around stating the various qualifications a host should have. Maria does indeed love rules, because they are necessary in order for working on a farm and renting rooms to run smoothly. Maria has no rigid rules of conduct, however, time limits must still be set when it comes to hour-long chats with guests. This is the way it should be believes Maria, whose daily ritual begins not with breakfast but first with work in the stables and then with caring for the children. “I am what I am, and the farm is what it is” – this is another cheeky but likeable statement from the Ebenau farmer. Her motto appears to be an agreeable philosophy, because it often happens that guests bring their own stable clothing and rubber boots with them and are assigned by Maria to muck out the stables (please note that this applies only to those who voluntarily choose to do so). This is a vacation reloaded. As a host, it is rare to have vacationers who come to the Mühlbauernhof wearing white summer pants and participate in farm work, but even in this case, Maria stays calm and does what has to be done. She has seen first-hand that life is full of new experiences that bring guests closer to a certain place, and white summer clothes can always be bleached.
If Maria’s batteries every run low, she finds balance, relaxation, and peace in the nearby surroundings of her farm. “There isn’t much here, but what is here is a sight to see”: this is how she describes the quality tourism experiences in the 1,400 resident community near the city of Mozart. Her personal hotspot (not that she actually uses this word) is the “Plötz natural monument” with the impressive 50 meter high waterfall. Tip: the Ebenau Mill Trail (an easy to intermediate, family-friendly hiking path of ca. 2 hrs.) leads to the waterfall.
“LAID-BACK PEOPLE ARE GREAT NO MATTER WHERE THEY COME FROM.” A stay at a “Farm Holidays” farm involves a lot of personal contact. The hosts are always there, and the bed capacity is very manageable. This creates a sense of closeness. This was unexpected for one vacationing family with two children, who noticed on New Year’s Eve how quiet and peaceful country life in winter away from the fireworks, sparkling wine, and midnight waltzes can be. What began frantically ended with a raclette meal together as a family on the farm. It doesn’t get any closer than this. Spontaneity is the spice of life at home as well as on vacation. Of course, this is not something you can book.

In 2011, Sonja Schossleitner moved to the Eislbauerhof in St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee for love even though she had no clue about farming. The product manager for golf clubs gave up her job and dove head first into unknown territory. Today, she and her husband Andreas run a total of nine Salzburg ark farms.
From a professional perspective, Sonja comes from a technical background. A 15-year professional career with an internationally renowned sports goods manufacturer is not something that can just be thrown away, at least that’s what you would think. Since Andreas came into her life in 2008, her perspective on the “how” of being and doing has radically changed. “My life has a completely different meaning”, says Sonja referring to her feeling of finding what she has been searching for after many years. The Eislbauerhof is not a classic farm but an ark farm, which is a place for breeding, housing, and presenting rare breeds of domesticated animals. Up here with a view of the Wolfgangsee are Pustertaler Sprinzen, Pinzgau cattle, and goats as well as Sulmtaler chickens and Altsteirer hens. The former was traditionally widespread as sturdy, robust cattle in the Alpine region. The post-war discord between Austrian and Italy led to Pustertal cattle being forbidden in these parts in the 1920s. South Tyrol was enemy territory.
“FOOD IS ALL ABOUT LIFE. BASTA.” The farmer from St. Gilgen speaks with the deepest conviction and a touch of informal preaching about the philosophy of the ark farm and how important it is to not give up. At the turn of the century, there were over 30 farms in the nearby surroundings, and today, there are only five. When they took over the farm of Andreas’ parents, the future was completely uncertain. With the limited size of the farm, “closing up shop” or “quitting” was the only thing that made sense to anonymous officials from afar. However, this did not even come into question for the two young, motivated farmers, and somehow, they came across the idea of switching to the model of an ark farm. This was a defining change of direction, and the consequent turning away from industrial farming was rather a bold step back that helped them move forward.
but which offers more in terms of content than if it included 15 types of sausage and 10 varieties of cheese. “People always complain about the death of farming but then buy the cheapest noodles made with caged eggs from discount stores”, the farmer confidently says. She thinks we must do something about this. The life motto of sustainability however goes far beyond the morning culinary offer. At the Schlossleitner’s farm, you will also find fruit trees in the garden and furniture made from the farm’s own recycled goods. A new wardrobe for the guest room was created from old cabinet doors, and older tiles remain in the bathrooms. “In the interest of a sustainable recycling economy, you can’t participate in every designer trend”, says the farmer, and she’s right.
“AREA WITH A VIEW OF THE WOLFGANGSEE” The guests, who mainly come from Germany, Austrian, and increasingly Switzerland, appreciate the not too intrusive offer on the farm as well as the many opportunities to experience exciting things around the Schafberg, Zwölferhorn, and Wolfgangsee. On the one hand, there are active guests who like to hike and ride bikes, and on the other, there are those interested in culture who want to explore the city of Salzburg but don’t want to stay in the inner city. They don’t want to actually travel anywhere but have found that “a paradise is right outside the door”.

BACK TO MAMA
Love at first sight Kathrin Röck comes from the Black Forest and ended up in the Gastein Valley by pure coincidence. When she applied for a job in the hotel industry at that time, she had no idea where this valley, which had restored the health of many emperors and kings, was located. On her very first stay, she took a shine to the people, and so she returned. Today, a few years and four children later, she is not only a proud farmer but also a dedicated and passionate accommodation provider.

Kathrin’s story is one of coming back. The connection to the valley and its people was established on her first visit during her temporary, seasonal job. Perhaps this is one reason for her quick return after she worked in “bella Italia”, which is also a place where you could put down roots. It’s no wonder that the trained tourism expert in the world of travel and international hotel management (she studied in Lübeck) set her sights on simple farm life on a farm in Salzburg’s Bad Hofgastein. Things often turn out differently than expected. After she met Matthias, she slowly got used to life on the farm. Whenever the parents-in-law were unable, she was able to help out and take on more and more responsibility. Kathrin loves the tourist part and truly enjoys creating a “holiday world” on the farm. “Our vacation apartments must be such that I as a guest would feel right at home”, she says. This shows that quality and ambiance are an integral part of the Grußberghof.
“EVERYTHING THAT NATURE YIELDS IS MARKETED.” Seven dairy cows provide the financial basis for the farm. In winter, they deliver to the milk dairy, while in summer, the Röcks focus on direct marketing with butter and cheese. At the farmer’s market in town, they also offer schnapps, jams, and ointments. The ointments are homemade by mother-in-law Maria. There are also a few pigs that are made use of on the farm. Delicious bacon can be found on the breakfast buffet and satisfies the taste buds of hungry guest families. Occasionally guests will ask if the bacon comes from the sweet pigs on the farm or their relatives. The closeness to the pigs creates bonds but also question marks. Producers and consumers are aware of this. However, the knowledge of the fate of the pigs has little impact on consumption. “Perhaps guests even appreciate the fact that the animals (in this case, the domestic pics) had a very good life”, mentions Ms. Röck.
“OUR GUESTS TREASURE THE NORMALCY OF THE FARM.” Previous guest children, who have now grown into relaxation-seeking, returning guests, tell how reluctant they were to head to the mountains with their parents at that time. The sea and the beach were much cooler; at least, that’s what they probably meant. Childhood memories have an impact and continue to have an effect decades later. So, it now happens that some of the former guest children are regulars here. Of course, they come with their kids. It’s only fair. The Grußberghof is located somewhat outside of Bad Hofgastein with a beautiful panorama of the valley and the Schlossalm across the way. There is also the farm’s own Rastötzenalm at an elevation of 1,700 m, which is easily reachable via a gravel road or mountain bike. Here, the little ones will find an ideal place to splash around in the water and build dams.
“GASTEIN HAS SO MUCH.” Kathrin has high praise for the Gamskarkogel, one of the highest grass mountains in the Eastern Alps, which rises up to an elevation of almost 2,500 m behind the farm. This is also where the quieter, more pristine side of the Gastein Valley is located… in other words, the summits and hillside meadows that are not covered with lifts. Winter plays a major role at the Grußberggut, because when it’s white and cold, the skiers come to Heissingfelding 13, which – according to Kathrin – is rather a distance from the farm. Another season, other countries of origin, other vacation motives. Of course, there is no such thing as boredom here in summer for young and old. The thermal swimming lake of the Alpentherme, which draws upon the waters of the hot springs that have attracted guests for centuries, is the newest infrastructural achievement in the modern spa town.

Conny Rohrmoser focuses on developing the trust of young people, who are provided with peace and strength to be able to overcome their personal challenges. Whether mental, physical, or spiritual, many children carry a burden that prevents them from flying high. Conny wants to always stay here and is happy “to have found her Sankt Johann native”. With her husband Johann, the trained kindergarten teacher lives and works at the Reiterhof, which is sometimes more like an educational campus than a farm.
The life of Conny Rohrmoser is so exciting that the facts and figures relating to the farm play only a secondary role. In short, when it comes to farm facts, the farm, which previously subsisted on dairy farming, now houses around 20 mother cows with calves. Her husband Johann works in a construction material plant and is guaranteed a traffic-jam free commute on his way to work from Maschl 3 (Reiterhof) to Maschl 28 (employer). After having children, Conny returned to work very quickly. As a trained educator, she focuses on animal-assisted intervention. At the same time, she offers the “school on the farm” four afternoons a week and is also a qualified forest educator. She almost has to be, since the farm is directly surrounded by the forest. She is a very hard worker and agrees with Albert Einstein, who once said: “Personalities are not shaped by pretty speeches but by their own work and achievement”. This is a living reality at the Reiterhof.
“WHEN CHILDREN COME TO LIFE AND BLOSSOM, I AM DELIGHTED.” It’s mainly children from the region not so much vacation guests who participate in the offer of animal-assisted education on the farm. What sounds simple and not medical at all can have a big influence on participants. A “Rabbit massage” or “going on a walk with a donkey” are done only with animals trained specifically for these purposes. This creates a deep connection between people and animals, which is hard to explain in a classic sense…even for Conny, the host, who has often practiced and experienced it. She does not place much importance on conventional medicinal feedback – it is much more important that she is able to support the children in whatever form they need with her trained animals. For example, the girl who could hardly walk but whose desire to move improved more and more after animal therapy. The donkey that placed its nose right on the nose of a child who could hardly move. These are moments that give you goosebumps and that make Conny ask: “Why does the animal do that?” There must be more to it. It’s hard to explain but simply beautiful when it happens. Another example is the mother of a child with social interaction issues who asks when another meeting with the animal can be arranged. These are true success stories. On this farm, education is more than uniform elementary school instruction according to a schedule. These days, education is unfortunately too often removed from nature and not accessible for children with their own individual challenges. Pigs are also great therapy animals Conny asserts. Just because we like their meat doesn’t mean that they aren’t more than just extra bacon.
“I AM A PERSON AND I NEED MY FREETIME.” From time to time, everyone needs a retreat including the farmers of “Farm Holidays”, who aren’t entertainers that are available around the clock. Of course, there are accommodation providers who get

Tabula rasa close to their guests, and there are others who find it better to keep more of a distance. Conny likes that here in St. Johann “the essence of being a farmer and the sense of community among farmers” work well. There is a solid core of people who stick together almost like a kind of social glue for the village community. Where does someone replenish their energy who gives so much of it like Conny Rohrmoser with her concept at the Reiterhof? Biking and singing are her passions away from the animals, guests, and school on the farm. “Tabula rasa” is the name of the local acapella choir with native and non-native Pongau residents, which in June 2017 brought home the gold medal in the category of “mixed choir” at the Salzburg International Choral Competition. She is also active in this choir. Congratulations!

Conny Viehhauser is a true country gal. This is how the friendly Pongau resident, who loves the greenery and the mountains that are abundant in the Kleinarltal, describes herself. This country idyll was not always the lifestyle imagined by the Sankt Johann native, who is also no stranger to après ski slopes. She actually wanted to take over her parent’s ski hut at some point. Today, she is the mother of three and makes marigold ointment from her own garden.
Conny Viehhauser has a multifaceted personality but beams when she talks about her way of life. It’s not hard to believe that she could handle the hectic “high life” of a ski hut in the main season, but today, she is very satisfied with her role as farmer, accommodation provider, and mother of three lively children, who keep her on her toes around the clock. “Farm work grounds you, and at the end of the day, you can see what you have created and accomplished”, she says about her fulfilling life on the farm. The young farmer however knows a different perspective, since she once worked at an office desk in the city for a few years. “Rupert is an animal person”, says Conny of her husband, whom she met six years ago and soon married. He takes care of the farming and has proven to be skilled with cattle breeding. Numerous awards for breeding animals with a special genetic makeup and quality testify to the successful work of the farmer.
“PLENTY OF ROOM TO RUN FREE MAKES THE KIDS HAPPY AND TIRED.” The Schwabhof is a high-quality vacation accommodation. With five vacation apartments, a classic room, and an exclusive pine chalet, the Viehhausers can accommodate around 40 guests. Many guests come with children, especially school-age children in summer. The program is very flexible here and is aimed at the needs of the guests, for example a group hike, which is offered 3 times a week. Three-hour hikes up to the summit are also possible so long as there is enough interest. Conny has noticed that guest children, who at first cautiously keep a distance from the animals, are actively helping out in the
stables by the end of the week. This has even become so popular that parents have to shorten their excursions so that they can be back at the farm in time for the kids to help out. City kids especially flourish here and quickly and happily fall asleep at night before their head hits the pillow. The stables are an alternative to the iPad and game consoles. Digital detox for the little ones doesn’t cost extra and is also just fine with the parents.
“THE FOREST GIVES ME MUCH STRENGTH.” The biking offer in the region is diverse and attractive. Nearby in Wagrain, the bike park attracts visitors from near and far with its lines and downhill routes, and in Kleinarl, there is the 1.2 km long Hirschleit Trail, which Conny has already tested herself. In town, there has been a real e-bike boom, including among the locals and especially mothers, who are needed at home and can’t be gone too long when catastrophes arise and the “stronger sex” doesn’t know what to do. The electric bike is very beneficial to them and allows for a greater radius of action. Both Conny and Rupert ride bikes, but now Conny is better at uphill performance, and Rupert “has to watch me from behind as I take the lead uphill”, laughs Conny as she reveals herself to be a fan of the electric bike. Along with the forest, which is a place of strength, it is the garden work that creates a balance to everyday work on the farm. She grows lettuce, herbs, and peas, and it is very important that children learn to carefully handle food. “Here, nothing edible is thrown away. Everything is recycled or used in the compost to one day become part of the earth again”, says the mother of three. She doesn’t use Pampers but swears by cloth diapers and hates mountains of garbage. “Yes, I’m eco”, she says honestly about her life philosophy, which at the Schwabhof consequently extends to the stables. As best he can, Rupert avoids using medicinal products on the cows. He uses homeopathic remedies instead of chemical drugs. The experiences speak for themselves, and there is no such thing as the “placebo effect” for the simpler cows. There is probably some truth in that.

We are family Karin Gruber wanted to become a farmer. The story of her growing up sounds very harmonious – only positive childhood memories of her first years of life and of working at her parent’s farm and interacting with the guests.
Every day on the farm, having fun is the priority, but the “adopted animal passbook” also brings a touch of responsibility to the vacation week for the little guests. “On a farm tour after their arrival, the children can pick out their own personal animal to take care of and look after it on their own during their stay”, explains the farmer. The ponies are the most popular, but reservations aren’t possible, because the pigs also need taking care of. The kids learn what morals and duty mean. Even though taking care of animals is an exciting vacation adventure in the beginning, it sometimes becomes boring. “But the children take it seriously although we of course check that everything is alright and sometimes provide motivational intervention”, says Karin Gruber about her personal development program. This is a clever move espe-
cially when it comes to guest bonding. What connects children and animals is not meant to disconnect parents. “We have even had vacationers, who bought the animal their child was caring for, in this case a pig, and took it home with them”, says the farmer with a grin. And if the critters are well taken care of, awaiting young boys and girls are wheelbarrow races, campfires, pony riding, go-karts, and Toni with the colorfully colored tractor trailer. Once a week, the host himself drives around the farm with the “Maurachhof express”. Completely safe and always exciting. In Pongau’s adventure land.
“SUNDAY IS FAMILY DAY.” Getting close to our guests is good and happens over the course of their stay. At the campfire or during the grill evening (which are offered alternately), we get to know them on a first-name basis. This speaks for the atmosphere at the farm, yet the private life of the Gruber family is also important and is kept private by Karin. Along with family day, she takes a time-out three times a week for physical well-being.
