Dear 2014 Eisner Camp Staff Member, Welcome to the Eisner Camp Staff Team of 2014! We are absolutely thrilled that you will be joining us this summer. The Union for Reform Judaism’s Eisner Camp is a very special place, and we look forward to your help in creating the community that so many call their second home.

This summer, Eisner Camp will open its gates to more than 1,100 campers (in both our overnight and day camp programs) nearly 300 staff members. We know that you will work very hard this summer to make the experience for our campers a memorable one. In addition to creating a safe and warm environment for our campers, we strive to make your camp experience fun, rewarding, engaging, safe and healthy. Our hope is that you arrive at camp energized and eager to work hard and play hard! When you leave camp at the end of the summer, we envision our staff community being as strong and close-knit as our campers’ community.

Whether you are a veteran staff member or a new staff member coming to camp this June, everybody will be experiencing the 2014 summer for the first time. We all come with new things to learn and new ideas to share. This staff manual is the first step in providing you with the information you will need to know and understand before stepping foot onto our grounds.

It will serve as a guide to you during your time with Eisner Camp and should be packed with all of your other camp things. In it you will find policy guidelines, time-off information, a packing list and much more. We urge you to read this through more than once. If after reading it, you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. And don’t forget to submit the online form affirming that you have read the manual.

Everything that we do at Eisner Camp should reflect these six goals.

WHO ARE THE PEOPLE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: ROLES & JOB DESCRIPTIONS Camp is a fun and safe place to spend the summer. Staff members help create an environment where all feel cared for and welcome. Just as a small town has people with specific roles and responsibilities, at camp we too have different groups of staff with specific roles and responsibilities. This section outlines who does what at camp and how each group is vital to the success of camp. Remember, no matter which category or categories you fit in, all staff members are responsible for the health, safety and well-being of all of our campers. So who are the people in your neighborhood?

General Counselors This group lives in cabins with campers and has the most interaction with the campers in their respective cabins. The primary role of the general counselor is to supervise campers during their activity periods at various locations around camp and to build and nourish a strong, caring and respectful community within the cabin. General counselors, along with the help of the in-cabin specialists when present (see below), manage the campers during times like wake-up, meals, nikayon (clean-up time), menucha (rest hour), shower time and bed time. When the in-cabin specialists return to the cabin from working in their program areas, the general counselors update them on important daily matters. General counselors take the lead on unit evening programs, creative chugim (electives), and Shabbat cabin activities.

General Counselors live with campers in a cabin and are supervised by the Unit Head of their unit. Duties include:  Care and supervision of campers  Working with campers and other staff members to accomplish the goals of the camp  Development and implementation of programs  Assistance with leading activities  Ensuring that campers maintain good hygiene, health and safety practices  Sharing in erev shmira (night time supervision) responsibilities  Attending unit staff meetings and all-camp staff meetings  Other duties that may be assigned from time to time at the discretion of the Camp Director In-Cabin Specialists This group has a dual role as both specialists in a specific activity area and as counselors living in cabins with campers.

Specialists include those coaches and instructors who run sports, arts, drama, outdoor education, waterfront, scouts, Limud, etc. After breakfast, specialists typically head to their activity area to set up so they’re ready to begin their day of lessons when the morning’s first activity period begins. These specialists eat meals with their cabins and join their cabins again in the late afternoon for shower time, dinner, t’filah, evening program and bedtime. In-Cabin Specialists will also be asked to help plan and run evening programs for the cabin/unit. In-cabin specialists are also responsible for the well-being and safety of their campers as well as building and nourishing a strong, caring and respectful community within the cabin. Since the general counselors have more frequent interactions with their cabin’s campers, the specialists check-in daily with the general counselors to learn about anything that may have gone on in the cabin in the specialist’s absence. The specialist and general counselors are partners, working together to build a cohesive cabin community.

Out-of-Cabin Specialists (Attached to Units) This group of staff members serves as leaders, instructors or coaches in a particular activity area. This group lives in staff cabins or rooms with other staff members. During the day, when activities are taking place, these specialists teach in a particular area of camp such as sports, arts, drama, outdoor education, waterfront, etc. When not working in their specialty area, at the end of the day’s activity periods, out-of-cabin specialists are “attached” to units and are responsible for supervising campers in a particular unit; assisting in the facilitation of unit and all-camp programming; and taking on other duties for that unit such as Shmira. They often eat meals with campers as well. This time with the unit gives the out-of-cabin specialists the opportunity to get to know the campers better, and to participate and add to unit and all-camp activities.

Attached Specialists may also be asked to help plan and run evening programs for the cabin/unit.At times, out-of-cabin specialists may be asked to staff programs at their specialty area during non-activity periods (e.g. pool parties in the evening).

Out-of-Cabin Specialists (Unattached) This small number of specialists are staff members with duties that require them to be in their specialty areas during different hours each day or who are responsible for a specific camp program. These staff members are not assigned to a particular

unit since they are not regularly available to participate. Included in this group are photographers, videographers, Israeli dance instructor, babysitters, and Teva staff. All of these jobs require working with the camp community at times other than daily activity periods. These staff members generally live in cabins or rooms with other staff members.

The Specialists are supervised by the Department Head in charge of their program area and the Unit Head of their unit (if in-cabin or attached). Duties include:  Development of daily instructional plans for activities for the different age groups of camp (chugim)  Supervision of campers and staff assigned to your group  Supervision of free play  Other duties that may be assigned from time to time at the discretion of the Camp Director Support Staff These staff members make sure that the wheels of camp are turning so that kids can eat, stay clean and have fun! This group includes cooks, kitchen assistants, office staff, drivers, logistics specialists, housekeepers, maintenance assistants and security guards. These staff members live in rooms or cabins with other support staff members. Many of the support staff come from countries where the primary language is not English such as Hungary, Czech Republic, Mexico, Israel and Poland. Many international support staff take their summer break to see the U.S., improve their English and to have a cultural experience while working in a safe and welcoming environment. Support staff members should reach out to other staff members and vice-versa, with so many people coming from so many different backgrounds, there is much that can be learned by all. These staff members play a vital role in the overall success of our camp program. They are supervised by the director of their particular area of work.

Senior Staff This is the leadership team of camp responsible for the day-to-day running of camp. Within the senior staff are both department heads and unit heads (see below). Senior Staff members create community within their specific areas and give constant and ongoing mentorship and support to those whom they supervise. During all-camp events, the Senior Staff is responsible for group management and supervision. These events include, but are not limited to, camp dances, July 4th carnival, concerts, unit plays, Shabbat evening activities, and all-camp t’filah (worship). Senior Staff members also help manage meals, are on duty on a rotating basis in the evening, and in an emergency, direct campers and staff members to safety. All staff members must honor the requests of senior staff members since they are the leadership team helping to manage camp. Senior staff members may be asked to assume duties that are beyond the specifics of a particular area or unit, such as driving camp vehicles; assisting on Opening Day, Visiting Day, intersession and Closing Day; accompanying units on trip days; or helping sign staff members in and out of camp. Senior Staff include: Unit Heads & Assistant Unit Heads Unit heads and assistant unit heads are responsible for everything that goes on in their respective units. They ensure that each staff member and camper has the tools needed to create cohesive cabin communities, provide guidance for counselors and address specific needs of the counselors and campers within their unit. The unit head is responsible for the ongoing mentorship and support of the unit’s staff members and unit’s program, while the assistant unit head insures that the operations and schedules of the unit are running as they should. Unit heads and assistant unit heads support counselors and campers in every way possible to insure that all are healthy, happy, safe and living the Jewish values as outlined in the camp’s mission statement.

Department Heads and Assistants Department Heads These senior staff members are responsible for particular program areas. Department heads plan programs for various activity areas and provide constant and ongoing mentorship and support to their assistants as well as to the activity leaders, instructors or coaches in their program area. Department heads often plan special all-camp events, and are always called upon to help manage campers and staff during all-camp programs. Most department heads have specific areas in which they are responsible for teaching chugim or other activities, and also supervise staff members who work in the same or related area. Department heads include the directors and assistant directors of the following areas: arts, drama, sports, adventure, Teva, waterfront, Limud, music, programming and media.

Senior Staff are the direct supervisors of all bunk counselors and specialty staff. They are supervised by the yearround directors. Duties include:  Constant and ongoing support and mentorship with immediate positive and constructive feedback for all staff members  Coordination and development of all programs within your program area or unit

Mishlachat Each year a group of staff members comes to camp from Israel. Each member of the mishlachat (delegation), or shaliach, has a job in one of our units or activity areas as instructors/activity leaders/coaches, general counselors, day camp counselors, or out-of-cabin specialists. In addition to their job in camp, mishlachat members bring Israeli culture and programming to camp along with a sense of pride for Israel. Our mishlachat members receive special training in Israel before they come to camp so that they can effectively teach about Israel and form lasting relationships with campers, connecting them to Israel in a very real and positive way. The mishlachat runs Israel programs for all units and infuses Israeli culture into all areas of camp. This summer the mishlachat will be led by a Rosh Mishlachat, or head of the delegation.

International Staff This group of staff comes from all over the world. Even though our Israeli staff is also international, at camp we refer to everyone from countries other than the U.S. and Israel as “International Staff.” International staff work in different areas of camp, may be Jewish or of another faith, and comes to camp through agencies from countries as close as Canada and as far away as Australia. Many international staff take their summer break to see the U.S., improve their English, and to have a cultural experience while working with children in a safe and welcoming environment.

Day Camp Staff Eisner Camp operates a local on-site day camp for members of the community and children of staff/faculty members. The campers in our day camp participate in many of the same activities that overnight campers enjoy. From Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, our day camp campers are engaged in a unique program and schedule specifically designed for children ages 3-7. Day camp staff members have responsibilities specific to day camp during the day and are considered out-of-cabin specialists, attached to units, in the evening. Day camp staff members generally live together in cabins or rooms with other staff members.

Faculty This is a group of rabbis, cantors and educators from around the northeast who volunteer at camp for a two-week period helping to drive and implement the educational mission of camp. Faculty members are primarily responsible for teaching Limud, the camp education program, and providing guidance to units as they plan to lead Shabbat t’filot for all of camp.

Faculty are also available to help staff plan programs, and they are always available with a listening ear or a lending hand.

Year-round/Full-time Staff This group of staff members works year-round to ensure the success of camp and includes not only the camp’s team of directors but also the registrar, development director, bookkeepers, maintenance staff, facilities manager, retreat center coordinator, food service manager and others. This small team of people is responsible year round for keeping the facility running, creating positive experiences for retreat groups, recruiting campers, managing data, processing checks, hiring staff, creating meaningful and memorable programming and ultimately fulfilling the mission and values of Eisner Camp and of Reform Judaism.

MEET THE CAMPERS Our campers come from the many Reform congregations in the Greater New York and Boston areas, as well as from throughout the northeast and beyond. Our overnight campers are divided into eight units by grade. Placement in overnight camp units is determined by the camper’s school grade the September right after camp. This way, each unit is comprised of children who are socially, physically and developmentally in approximately the same place.

K’TANIM (little ones): entering 2nd and 3rd grades

CHAVERIM (friends): entering 8th grade

BONIM (builders): entering 4th and 5th grades

TZOFIM (scouts): entering 9th grade

CHALUTZIM (pioneers): entering 6th grade

OLIM (those who go up): entering 10th grade MACHON (institute): counselor/specialist training program, entering 12th grade

OFARIM (deer): entering 7th grade

Campers entering 11th grade spend an unforgettable summer in Israel with their Eisner friends on a North American Federation of Temple Youth [NFTY] tour. NFTY is the youth program of the URJ. Our K’tanim unit attends camp for two weeks. This introductory program is perfect for our youngest campers, most of whom will be away from home for the first time. Special attention is paid to teaching our K’tanim campers how to get around camp, and how to enjoy all that camp has to offer. K’tanim stays together throughout the day for all of its many selfcontained activities. Our “Little Ones” form wonderful friendships and have a great time during what we hope will be the first of many summers at Eisner.

Our Machon unit is a Staff-In-Training program. During the first session of camp, our Machon participants engage in an intensive camp training program, preparing them for all aspects of being a staff member. During the second session of camp, our Machon participants become apprentices for different areas of camp including specialists, counselors and members of the kitchen, maintenance and office staff. Throughout the summer Machon participants will experience a Jewish leadership program led by faculty members and learn how to work in a team, interact with peers, children and to lead camp in a meaningful way that is in line with each person’s skills and strength.

Our Day Camp program serves children ages 3-8 in the Berkshire area as well as children of our faculty and staff. These campers may attend camp from anywhere between two and eight weeks. Day campers travel throughout the day all together with their counselors and participate in all the camp activities. Day Camp Counselors are assigned to specific campers units or jobs in the evening after the Day Camp day is complete.

A DAY IN THE LIFE: CAMP’S DAILY ACTIVITIES & SCHEDULES SUNDAYS-THURSDAYS AT CAMP BOKER TOV [Good Morning] Each morning, our counselors wake their campers so that they have enough time to get dressed, brush their teeth, comb their hair, and get to breakfast on time.

ARUCHT BOKER [Breakfast] We begin our day by singing Modeh Ani (a prayer which gives thanks for the new day), reciting Hamotzi (blessing before the meal), and eating breakfast together. Each day’s breakfast includes a favorite such as pancakes, French toast sticks, oatmeal, waffles, eggs, or muffins. Cold cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt, milk, and orange juice are always available. We end our meal with the singing of Birkat Hamazon (blessing after the meal.) During breakfast, as with all meals except for dinner on Friday and breakfast on Saturday, counselors and campers sit together as cabins. It is during this meal and others throughout the day that counselors are ensuring that campers in their care are eating a wholesome serving of food and are excited about their upcoming activities.

UNIT HODA’OT [Announcements] After breakfast each day, the entire unit meets in a specified location to let campers know about important events coming up and to announce any special activities that may be occurring. These messages will be given to each unit individually rather than in the dining hall over the PA system. Once the announcements are complete, campers will begin Nikayon.

NIKAYON [Clean Up] Each day we allot 45 minutes for cleaning up the bunks. During this time, campers make their beds, organize their cubbies, and fill their laundry bags. Campers are also responsible for cleaning the communal areas of the bunk. Each day, they rotate through a list of nikayon tasks, including sweeping, taking out the trash, emptying the clothes line, and cleaning the bathroom. Each bunk is inspected regularly. On Friday afternoon, as part of our Shabbat preparation, each bunk cleans a designated area of camp. During this time, counselors assist campers and encourage them to work together to complete assigned nikayon tasks.

LIMUD [Learning] Campers actively participate in a daily period of Limud (called Kesher for Chaverim, Tzofim & Olim), our camp-style education program. A committed group of rabbis, cantors and educators from Reform congregations throughout the northeast meet during the year to outline a theme-based summer curriculum which is experiential, creative, and ageappropriate for each unit. Guided by our Limud staff, counselors, and the rabbis, cantors, and educators who serve on our summer faculty, campers explore a variety of Jewish concepts and values based on the summer’s theme. Counselors actively participate in these learning sessions, aiding the faculty members in leading small groups while simultaneously paying attention to the needs of campers in their care.

SWIM All campers in K’tanim, Bonim, Chalutzim, Ofarim, and Chaverim receive daily swim instruction. Our Tzofim campers have special swim electives, such as water polo and water aerobics, while Olim campers have a daily free swim period. Campers are tested during the first few days of each session to assess each camper’s individual swimming ability, and to determine appropriate instruction level placement. Campers are placed in various instruction levels based on their swimming test, and not on their instruction level of the previous summer. At the end of the session, campers are tested for proficiency, and awarded official Red Cross certificates. It is a camp policy that girls must wear one-piece bathing suits or “tankinis” during swim instruction. Counselors are responsible for helping campers arrive dressed and ready for swim instruction.

During this swim period, counselors meet with their unit heads.

ART INSTRUCTION & CHUGIM One of the distinguishing features of Eisner Camp’s program is camper-selected activities that change on a weekly basis.

Art Instruction options include painting, pottery, crafts, dance, drama, guitar/song leading, model airplane building, painting, photography, recording studio and others. Chugim options include basketball, tennis, soccer, baseball, Ultimate Frisbee, hockey, flag football, biking, adventure activities, and more. Both of activities are led by qualified instructors and coaches and last 3-4 days. Every effort is made to give campers their first choice as much as possible.

SPORTS INSTRUCTION Each day, campers participate in one period of sports instruction. Campers have the opportunity to build on existing skills in a specific sport with an eye towards further improvement, or to begin to develop skills in a new sport. Campers get to choose from sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, fitness, self defense, and aerobics. Good sportsmanship, fitness, skill acquisition, and fun are all important components of our sports program. All instructional sports are taught by our sports specialists. Campers are required to wear socks and sneakers during their sports period.

During Art Instruction, Chugim, and Sport Instruction, counselors are assigned to different program areas to help the activity leaders manage their groups and keep the campers engaged.

BECOMING OLIM Our Olim campers explore various aspects of Jewish leadership during this daily period. (The word Olim literally means “the ones who ascend.”) These are the oldest campers on camp and are learning to be leaders. In addition to enjoying some of the regular chugim, Olim campers participate in the “Becoming Olim” experience that helps them hone their leadership skills learn what it means to be the oldest campers. OIim counselors play an active and important role in this experience.

ARUCHT TZOHORAYIM [Lunch] A kid-friendly lunch is served each day. Some favorites include pizza, cold cuts, fish sticks, grilled cheese sandwiches, and chicken nuggets. Fresh salad is served at each meal as well. Peanut butter and jelly, fresh fruit, and vegetarian and lactose-free alternatives are always available. Lunch begins with Hamotzi and ends with Birkat Hamazon. It is during this meal and others throughout the day, that counselors are ensuring that campers in their care are eating a wholesome serving of food and are excited about their upcoming activities.

MENUCHA [Rest Hour] After an activity-packed morning, campers need to take a break. During Menucha, campers have counselor supervised down time in their bunks. Some campers sleep, while others read, write letters, or play quiet games with bunkmates.

MO [“Canteen”--“Mo” is short for Mo’adon, which means “lounge.”]

Twice each week, campers choose from a list of sweets, slushies, and other afternoon snacks. Campers visit the Mo either after lunch or during Breira. Every counselor receives the Mo along with his or her cabin, and special arrangements for activity specialists to also get it from time to time.

BREIRA [Choice] During Breira, campers are free to choose any activity that camp has to offer. Some campers swim or go boating, others play sports or do arts and crafts, and many just find a shady spot to relax with their friends. During this period, members of the coaching staff will offer a variety of 2-day Sports Intensives where campers can sharpen particular skills in different sports. All staff members are stationed around camp to supervise the many activities available. Breira is a great opportunity for campers to be outdoors having fun with friends and staff. Campers are not allowed in their cabins during Breira. A snack is made available to campers each day during this time.

COUNSELOR-LED CHUGIM Eisner’s unique counselor-led chugim have always been a highlight for campers. Each week campers in Chaverim, Tzofim and Olim will be able to choose from a number of chugim that are completely counselor created. These chugim can be as creative as you want. Some camp favorites are playground games, the mitzvah chug, and the Amazing Race. Campers in Bonim, Chalutzim and Ofarim will also get to choose from some creative chugim during their one of their activity periods.

SHOWER TIME All campers go back to their cabins and stay there until dinner. During this time, campers shower, change for dinner, and spend some time with their bunkmates and counselors. Counselors are responsible for ensuring that campers take a shower every day and that they are practicing good hygiene.

ARUCHT EREV [Dinner] A kid-friendly dinner is served each day. Some favorites include tacos, chicken fajitas, baked ziti, spaghetti and meatballs, turkey, and chicken. Fresh salad is served at each meal and peanut butter and jelly, fresh fruit, vegetarian and lactosefree alternatives are always available. Campers enjoy a weekly outdoor barbeque with burgers and hot dogs. Dinner begins with Hamotzi and ends with dessert and Birkat Hamazon. It is during this meal and others throughout the day, that counselors are ensuring that campers in their care are eating a wholesome serving of food and are excited about their upcoming evening activity. This is also a time when counselors check in with their campers about the events of their day.

T’FILAH [Prayer] Every day each unit comes together for t’filah. Evening f’filah is always age-appropriate, full of song, and usually led and written by campers and their counselors. By the end of each camp session, campers are familiar with the prayers included in this short daily service.

TOCHNIT EREV [Evening Program] Each unit’s counselors work closely with their unit heads to plan evening programs for their campers. Some programs are social programs, such as pool parties or “wacky olympics,” while others are content-based, such as those dealing with peer pressure or social activism. We also have Judaic programs that teach campers about topics such as Israel or Jewish values. Occasionally, the entire camp community will come together for a camp-wide program, such as a special concert or dance, a July Fourth carnival, or a unit play. In addition to planning and taking leadership roles in these activities, counselors and staff are responsible for paying attention to the needs of their campers.

BEDTIME RITUAL Each night, there will be approximately 30 minutes for campers to wind-down and get ready for bed. This time includes washing up and brushing teeth in preparation for bed. During this time counselors have the opportunity to plan a meaningful bedtime activity that might include a quiet game, star gazing, sharing everyone’s day, or having a guest song leader, rabbi, cantor or educator sing songs or tell stories.

LAILA TOV [Good Night] After a long day full of Eisner activity and fun, it is time for bed. Depending on the length of the evening program, campers are given some flashlight time, quietly in their beds. Counselors are responsible for ensuring that campers are ready for bed, and that they each get a good night’s sleep. One counselor is always present in the bunk during this time.

HILL TIME Olim campers are given some extra supervised time to visit with friends at the discretion of the Unit Head each night before returning to their bunks for Laila Tov. SPECIAL DAYS/PROGRAMS Most days will follow the regular schedule described in the previous pages, but not every day! There will be a few days throughout each session where your cabin or unit will do something outside of the everyday schedule.

Outdoor Education: Adventure, Teva, and the Farm Eisner Camp has four different challenge courses! We have a low ropes course; a high ropes course and zip line; an Alpine Climbing Tower with a Swing by Choice; and a Climbing Wall. We believe that while all these courses are a lot of fun for the campers and staff, they also give us an opportunity to facilitate the creation of a cohesive cabin group.

Each cabin in camp participates in some aspect of our adventure program. Each cabin is pulled from the regular daily schedule for one morning or afternoon session. During this time the campers and their counselors go to one of the challenge courses. There are facilitators who run all of these activities. These facilitators have been through a certified training course on safety, group dynamics and team building. When a cabin is at the Adventure program everyone, including the counselor, must be wearing closed-toe shoes. Additionally, because most of the challenge courses are in the woods, campers and counselors must be covered in bug repellent.

Teva is our Jewish nature program and offers our campers astounding new opportunities. In addition to chugim that feature hikes, learning and nature-themed activitiets, Bonim through Tzofim campers participate in an overnight at one of our campsites once each session. During the visit, they sleep in tents, cook outside, learn about the environment, and experience various Jewish values and lessons. Your cabin will resume regular activities after breakfast the following morning. Older campers are able to sign-up for 2 day hikes on the Appalachian Trail, and Olim campers can sign up for an optional off-camp hike and overnight experience.

Along with Adventure and Teva, campers can participate in an agricultural experience that features animal care and gardening. Campers will have the option of signing up for one of the farm chugim, where they will learn basic animal care, how to tend a garden (the produce of which is used in preparing meals for the Teva overnight programs), and Reform Judaism’s teachings about our responsibility and connection to animals and their environment. The animal area and garden are off-limits unless one of the Farm Program Specialists or a camp director is present.

Trip Day Once each session the campers will leave camp on a trip. Depending on the unit you are working in, you will either be going on a day trip to area attractions or on an overnight trip. Trip Day is an extremely fun part of the summer, but is also a time when you need to be highly aware and in control of your campers. All staff members must wear their staff shirts on Trip Days. Campers will be broken into groups led by counselors and there will be pre-scheduled check-in times to be sure everyone is accounted for and safe. Your Unit Head will go over trip procedures with you as that day gets closer.

Sports Tournaments The Sports Directors will set up tournaments with other camps for various age groups. When that occurs, campers will be able to try out and practice for these tournaments. On the day of the event a few counselors will accompany the sports staff on the van to help with supervision. Campers will be given Eisner uniforms to wear during the game.

Theme Days In addition to our amazing general schedule, we add a lot of other special activities to the calendar. Themed events include the Fourth of July Carnival, Rib Night & Country Dancing, D.J. Todd Yahney, Hagigah (Arts Festival), Camper Shows, and Maccabiah, our campwide color war spectacular!

FRIDAYS AT CAMP The Friday schedule is different from our Sunday to Thursday schedule. Wherever possible, special camp-wide events will occur on Fridays along with designated unit time, Limud, free sport and Shabbat Prep. This is the day where specialists have off and counselors will run activities for their units. During the unit activity period, units are required to program an activity that could be a scavenger hunt, capture the flag, intramurals, or other creative programs.

Free Swim Every unit will hold a free swim on Friday. During this time counselors will be in the pool with their campers to make the pool atmosphere more fun! Waterfront staff will set up relay races and other games to go on during this hour.

Unit Sport Campers will have the option to play games in a few different sports chosen by the unit heads and sport directors each week. The unit heads and sports directors may also choose to do other games such as capture the flag, relay races, “Quidditch,” and other fun activities.

Campwide Nikayon Each unit will be assigned a different area of camp to clean up. During all-camp nikayon all campers and staff will pick up trash, straighten equipment and generally make sure the area assigned is neat and orderly. Specialists will clean up and straighten their specialty areas.

Shabbat Prep After camp wide nikayon and toranut, everyone in camp will return to their living areas and prepare for Shabbat. Staff and campers area asked to wear white shirts or tops on to welcome Shabbat.

Kabbalat Shabbat in Unit Areas Each living area will gather outside and form a large circle. Once everyone is assembled the song leading staff will lead the group in two or three Kabbalat Shabbat songs. The group will continue singing as they walk from their living area down to the Chadar Ochel for dinner.

Aruchat Erev (Dinner) On Shabbat the entire camp community eats together. For Friday night there are no assigned tables; campers and staff are free to sit with family members or friends with whom they have not been able to eat throughout the week. Counselors must sit two to a table to ensure proper coverage and supervision. Once everyone is seated and quiet, we begin our Shabbat meal with the traditional Shabbat blessings. Our faculty will come to the microphone and lead the entire camp in the lighting of Shabbat Candles, the blessing of Shabbat wine, the blessing of children and Hamotzi. Following Hamotzi, counselors will be called up to get the meal.

The dining hall is most chaotic on Friday nights. Due to the fact that we don’t have campers sitting by bunks, all staff must pay close attention to who is at their table and supervise them effectively. Please don’t allow campers to get up and roam around the dining hall to “visit” friends. There is ample time to do that following the meal. Imagine 800 people walking around one room!!

T’filah (Services) On Shabbat, t’filah takes place as an entire camp community event. After Shabbat dinner concludes, campers and staff gather in the Beit T’filah (our outdoor sanctuary). Throughout the week, a unit of camp has been working with our faculty to prepare services. T’filah is creative and full of song, and the campers themselves lead us in prayer with prepared readings, songs, art projects and a dance.

T’filah is a time when counselors must be integrated with the campers, so as in dinner, counselors must spread themselves throughout the sanctuary. On Shabbat we tend to want to spend time with our friends and fulfill our own needs to be spiritual and pray. We cannot forget that our primary concern must be with the campers. Counselors should not sit in staff clumps and let the campers fend for themselves! All staff (not just bunk counselors) are responsible for sitting with campers and maintaining a level of kavod (respect) for t’filah.

All Camp Shira (Song Session) Immediately following services, campers will be dismissed to the Beit Am for an Eisner tradition: a rousing, dancing, energetic song session. We will sing as an entire camp community for thirty minutes. We as staff must recognize what the campers are doing in a time when all of camp is together. Younger campers have the potential to be overwhelmed by the sound and crowd. Please pay attention to all campers! All campers and staff must stay inside the Beit Am for the entire song session.

Israeli Dance Israeli Dance takes place on the Quad located right outside of the dining hall. Older campers may change in the bathroom into dance clothing if they choose. Campers and counselors go straight from song session to dance. Units will be sent to bed in a staggered time frame directly from the quad.

SHABBAT (SATURDAYS) AT CAMP Optional Breakfast/Shmira Begins There will be an optional breakfast starting at 8:15 AM. Breakfast is served buffet style to campers and staff who wish to come to the Chadar Ochel and eat. No one may take food out of the Chadar Ochel. Staff members will be assigned to the chadar ochel to be sure that campers clean up before T’filah.

Saturday Morning Shmira begins at 8:15 AM as well. If campers wish to leave their bunks at 8:30 AM and go outside or to the dining hall they may do so. A rotating schedule will be distributed each week that will outline which staff members are assigned to cover each area of camp. There will be staff in all areas of camp.

Return to Bunks Before t’filah begins all campers and counselors must return to the bunks. This is to ensure that all campers are accounted for before they make their way to t’filah. All staff must go to their bunks, count their campers, and walk down to t’filah as a bunk unit.

Aruchat Tzoharaim (Lunch) Starting with Aruchat Tzohoraim, camp returns to sitting by bunk for all meals. Although we are all together for the meal, we do sit by bunk in our regular assigned tables.

Havdalah Havdalah translates literally to “separation.” This is the service that separates Shabbat from the rest of the week. We literally separate the sacred time of Shabbat from the schedule of the regular week. Each unit conducts its own havdalah service.

WORKING AT CAMP TIME OFF Days Off Each staff member will have 5 days off throughout the summer (3 first session, 2 second session), with additional time given during Specialist Training and Staff Certification Week. General counselors will be divided into 2 groups, which will be labeled, “A” and “B.” “A” Day off (includes Day Camp staff) will run from Saturday @ 6:00 PM until Sunday @ 6:00 PM “B” Day off will run from Sunday @ 6:30 PM until Monday @ 6:30 PM Specialist Day off will run Thursday @ 6:00 PM until Friday @ 5:00 PM, when Kabbalat Shabbat begins.

Each camper cabin will have a general counselor “A”, general counselor “B”, and a specialist. A and B will be worked out with your unit head during staff certification week to accommodate as many friend groups as possible.

On certain Specialist Days Off, we will provide buses to various locations so that our international staff members, most of whom do not have access to cars, can visit different places. Once each session there will be a day trip to a major city, like Boston and New York, and on the other weeks local buses may take staff members to local attractions like the Lee Outlet Mall and Lake Mansfield.

Friday nights, Monday nights, and Wednesday nights are designated as “on camp” nights. This means staff members remain on camp after programming concludes and campers are asleep in the cabins. In addition, no one will be permitted to take a day off from Friday to Saturday. Friday nights will feature an all-camp staff meeting to celebrate the week and cover important camp business and information for the upcoming week. Wednesdays will feature special staff programming opportunities.

Hours Off Each staff member will be assigned time off during the day. You are encouraged to take this time to relax. Working with kids can be very draining. Many staff like to use their time off to get some “alone” time. Due to the fact that staff members live with campers there is not much personal time at camp; please take advantage of your time off. If you desire you may leave camp on your time off. You must sign out at the security area before you leave and sign back in when you return.

You must be at your next scheduled activity on time.

Leaving Camp Grounds All staff members may leave camp after being released by their Unit Head or supervisor for their hour off and day off. All staff MUST sign out on the appropriate sign out sheet before leaving camp and sign in upon their return. During regular business hours the sign out sheet will be with the gate security guard. All staff must utilize this sheet when leaving camp and returning to camp. After lights out, sign in and out sheets will be found with the Rosh Shmira and if you go off camp you must sign out at the security area.

Staff Lounge This is an area specifically designated for staff use only! This area is expected to be kept clean, neat and orderly. Food from outside camp is ONLY allowed in the staff lounge. Time in the staff lounge is limited to your time off. No out of camp food should be eaten around campers.

CURFEW There is a curfew each night. Curfew means not only being in camp but also being in your living area at the specified time.

Sunday through Thursday, all staff must be signed into camp by midnight and in their own living quarters by 12:15 AM. On Friday and Saturday, all staff must be signed into camp by 12:30 AM and in their own living quarters by 12:45 AM. Eisner Camp has many facilities that the staff can use in the evening, or during the day when the schedule permits. There is a lounge that is open most evenings where the staff can go to hang out, watch TV, use the Internet, etc. Staff are permitted to use the Fitness Room to work out in the evenings as well. On Friday evenings, the beginning of Shabbat, there is often a special Oneg Shabbat for the staff. This may vary from entertainment to special foods.

Staff members should feel free to spend time in the staff lounge, a space designated for staff only. There are computers, snack machines, and satellite television in the staff lounge. If there is something you want to do at night that you do not feel is being made available to you, suggest it to the directors. We will do the best we can to accommodate you. As with anything else at camp, when you are not sure, JUST ASK. PAYROLL & SALARY* All counselors and specialist will be paid at the end of the summer, August 18, upon completion of a bunk inspection by Directors or other designees. All support staff will be paid at the end of the summer, August 18, or the final day of their contract if later, upon completion of a bunk inspection by Directors or other designees. All staff may, if they choose, receive a portion of their salary in the middle of the summer.

Please plan your summer finances accordingly. If you have not filled out your W4 form or I-9 form you will not get paid. All forms, including a signed contract MUST be turned into our office by May 15, 2014, in order to receive your paycheck at the end of the summer.

International Pay International staff will be paid through a debit card managed by Payoneer in partnership with Eisner Camp. A portion of your salary will be uploaded onto the debit card in the middle of the summer and the final portion will be uploaded upon the completion of your summer contract. Any travel reimbursements agreed upon prior to camp will be uploaded to the card only if receipts have been provided to the bookkeeping office. Travel reimbursements will be uploaded to the card or reimbursed in cash/check. The card can be used as a normal debit card in retail stores or staff members can choose to withdraw the cash from any ATM machine. Before May 1, each international staff member will receive an email about registering for Payoneer. This must be completed by May 15 in order for staff members to receive their card and payment on time. *The dates listed are subject to change. Please keep an eye out for emails with specific regard to Payoneer.

Salary Adjustment Policy This policy pertains to those graduating high school and those that may have to leave camp early due to conflicts with the start of college or university:  If you are a high school student and you are participating in graduation-related activities that conflict with staff orientation or the start of camp, your salary will be adjusted for each day missed if you must take 3 or more days.  If you must attend college orientation while camp is in session from June 30 through August 17, you will be allowed a maximum of three days without financial penalty. If you must be away for 1, 2 or 3 days, it will only count as one day off. Each day more than 3 days will be adjusted from your salary. Attendance at college orientation is not permitted during staff orientation or the first few days of camp (until July 1).  If you must leave for college on or before August 13, you will be asked to forego your final day off and your salary will be adjusted for those days (one of those days counting as your day off). If you are leaving August 14 or later, you will receive your final day off and your salary will be adjusted accordingly.

Tipping The URJ has a strict “No Tipping” policy. Staff members are not allowed to accept tips or any form of gratuities. Parents who wish to recognize a staff member’s hard work may make a donation to camp’s Staff Appreciation Fund.

STAFF MEETINGS Staff meeting All-Camp Staff Meetings will take place every Friday and Wednesday nights after the campers go to bed. These meetings will focus on highlights of the past week and will cover important information about the upcoming week at camp. There will still be shmira in each cabin and cabin area during staff meetings.

Unit Staff meetings will take place daily during instructional swim (Sundays-Thursdays) and on Saturdays during Breira.

General counselors will meet with their unit heads each day, and it is the responsibility of the general counselors to inform specialists of the information shared during the meetings.

The Senior Staff will have meetings during menucha.

SOCIAL MEDIA & COMMUNICATION Internet Privacy, Camp Representation and Social Networking For the safety and security of our campers and fellow staff members, you are not permitted to share or post e-mail, blogs, images or internet content that are cruel, demeaning, disrespectful or intentionally hurtful to a member of the camp community. You also may not present camp or its programs in a negative manner.  

   

Staff members are NOT permitted to post any photos of campers on Facebook or ANY website.

Staff members may only post comments or photos of other staff members, and may not post and images of staff members engaging in any action prohibited by the rules of camp outlined in the staff manual. This includes images of drug use, nudity, violence or alcohol use (even if the staff member is over 21) on or off of camp during or prior to the summer.

Staff members may not use Twitter, Facebook or any similar social networking or web site to post real-time updates about activities or programs at camp.

The director reserves the right to ask a staff member to remove any material in question.

A staff member found to be engaging in activity outlined above or other activities that are slanderous or misrepresent camp risks dismissal from camp.

At the end of the summer, counselors may communicate with campers via phone, email or other social network ONLY if the staff member receives permission from the camper’s parent.

By working at Eisner Camp, you are accepting the responsibility of portraying yourself as a role model in the most positive manner possible. It is important to respect the natural boundary that exists between campers and staff members both during camp as well as during the school year.

PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT CAMP, REMOVE ANY PHOTOS THAT MAY MISREPRESENT YOU OR CAMP. THIS INCLUDES DRINKING, DRUG USE AND PARTYING. IF IT IS DISCOVERED THAT ANY ILLEGAL OR INNAPOPRIATE ACTIVITY IS DISPLAYED ON YOUR FACEBOOK PROFILE, YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO DISMISSAL BY THE DIRECTOR. We ask that following the summer, any campers that may request to be connected to you on Facebook be placed on a limited profile and must be approved by the campers’ parent. The intention behind this request is not to shield campers from possible inappropriate activity which should never be displayed publicly, but rather because you should not be exposing our campers to your life story and events of your life that tend to be illustrated on Facebook.

Cell Phone Usage Cell phone usage is limited to your time off and must be conducted away from your campers and responsibilities. No one may carry a cell phone with them during the day except for the camp directors. Staff members are not permitted to make calls or text message within camp during the day between those outside of camp or with other staff members.

Staff and unit heads should not be exchanging text messages during the day with one another. Unit heads and certain program areas will be provided radios to be in communication with each other and the directors. Campers are not permitted to have cell phones at all, and if you find one of your campers with a cell phone, you should confiscate the phone and report it to your supervisor. Campers found to be carrying a cell phone will be sent home from camp for a period of time to be determined by the director. While we do recognize that you will keep your phone in the cabin, make sure your phone or internet connected device is not used in front of your campers and is not visible while you are in the cabin. Campers are not permitted to have phones or any other electronics besides a music player (with the games and movies removed).

GENERAL REGULATIONS All staff members will participate in a general Safety and Security Orientation during their training. The following is a list of the regulations all staff members at URJ Eisner Camp are expected to follow as members and employees of the camp community.

Alcoholic Beverages and Illegal Drugs Eisner Camp has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy concerning the use or possession of alcohol, marijuana or any other illegal drugs. Violators will immediately be dismissed from camp if found in possession of drugs or alcohol while at camp.

Drug-Free Workplace URJ maintains a drug-free workplace in all of its offices or facilities and requires drug-free performance of its employees wherever they may be assigned. The implementation of this policy will, of course, be consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other applicable laws. Drugs may not be brought to, used, offered or sold at any URJ gathering or facility. Employees in violation of this aspect of the policy are subject to immediate termination for gross misconduct. The use of alcohol except in limited circumstances or for ceremonial requirements only is likewise prohibited. If an employee is at a URJ camp in an apparently impaired condition, that employee will be sent home in such a way as to maximize safe arrival. If a staff member admits to a substance abuse problem prior to such conduct being “discovered” by the URJ, the URJ may suggest and/or permit that he or she seek appropriate treatment.

Restricted Areas No unauthorized person shall enter the kitchen or food storage areas; the maintenance buildings; the non-public areas of the infirmary, canteen or office; or any program areas, particularly those with posted warning signs, without permission from the supervisor of that area or a director. This is to ensure the safety and security of our entire camp community.

Smoking Policy Eisner Camp is a non-smoking environment per the policy of the Union for Reform Judaism. Eisner has hired a nonsmoking staff for the summer. We see this as an opportunity to take another step forward in living the values that we want to instill in our campers. Therefore, smoking is not permitted anywhere on camp. This policy includes electronic cigarettes.

Appropriate Dress All staff members are expected to wear clothing appropriate to working in a camp community of 500+ children. This means tops and swimsuits that are not too tight or revealing, and shorts and bottoms that are neither too short or reveal underwear.

Clothing may not advertise beer, alcohol, or drugs, and may not contain any inappropriate language or images. Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times, such as sneakers or other closed-toed shoes for sports, adventure, Teva and other similar activities. No one may walk around camp barefoot. Clothing should also be appropriate to the weather, and we look to our counselors to set the example. If it’s raining, wear a rain jacket and rain boots or water shoes, if it’s exceptionally hot, do not wear sweatshirts, etc.

Visitation Policy Eisner Camp provides a closed campus to ensure the health, safety and emotional well-being of its campers and staff.

While we would like to welcome all for Shabbat, the need to ensure the emotional well-being, health and safety of our campers must take precedence. Family and friends of current campers and staff may not come on to campgrounds at any time, other than Opening/Closing Days or 8-week camper Visiting Day. A limited number of staff alumni and staff parents will be allowed to join the camp each week in celebrating Shabbat for services, dinner and Israeli dancing. These spots need to be reserved in advance (and approved by the director), and space will be limited. Thank you for ensuring the safety, security and sanctity of this holy community.

Pets Pets are prohibited on camp.

Fireworks/Firearms/Weapons No fireworks or firearms are permitted in camp. Weapons including, but not limited to, knives, guns and explosives are prohibited in camp, on camp sponsored trips, or on camp property at any time without written permission from the Camp Director. The laws of Massachusetts and the rules of camp forbid these items. Any person violating this policy will be immediately dismissed.

Driving Camp vehicles are to be used for camp business and emergencies only. No staff member shall operate any motor vehicle on camp grounds without prior permission from the Camp Director. General camp staff may not transport campers in their personal cars at any time. Campers and staff should only be transported in vehicle designed to carry passengers. They are not permitted to ride in the back of trucks except in an emergency and when directed by appropriate staff. Vehicles should carry only the number of passengers specified by the vehicle manufacturer. There should be a seatbelt for each passenger. No vehicles besides designated Eisner Camp vehicles will be driven through camp except on arrival day and departure day. Staff parking is located in the front of camp and can be utilized by all camp staff. No staff members may park on camp grounds unless given permission by the Camp Director.

OFFICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Winter Office & Summer Office The “Winter Office” is camp’s operations headquarters. In the year-round administrative center sit the Director, Assistant Directors, Bookkeepers, Registrar, Facilities Manager, and Development Director. This office is not a hangout spot and as such, counselors should not be in the office unless there is an immediate need. Program and service preparation should be done in the program office or on program computers in the staff lounge. Excessive office traffic makes it difficult to conduct business. Please adhere to office policies.

The “Summer Office” is the center of summer operations: main switchboard, photocopies for camp programs, mail and package distribution, lost and found, and the Senior Staff office.

Office hours are:

Mail Mail is sorted Sunday through Friday and is available for pick-up after lunch. One counselor from each bunk is permitted to retrieve the mail. No mail may be picked up before lunch. Outgoing mail can be placed in the mailbox in the entranceway of the Summer Office or in the mailbox on the stage of the Chadar Ochel. Stamps are available for purchase through the bookkeeping office.

Photocopies and Program Supplies All photocopy requests must be placed in the mailbox of the Summer Office at least 48 hours prior to when the copies are needed. Only office staff may use photocopy machines unless prior approval is given by the Summer Office Manager or Summer Administrator. All program supply requests will be approved by the Unit Head and then submitted for review and fulfillment by the Summer Administrator. If supplies are not ordered in time, staff will risk the chance of their orders not being filled.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH CENTER PROCEDURES At some point during the summer it is inevitable that some campers and counselors will require medical attention. Eisner Camp has a team of medical staff on staff throughout the summer but the primary defense against illness is you, the staff member. With this in mind please, ensure that your campers, follow the precautions below. All staff members will go through a health center orientation prior the beginning of the summer which will outline health center procedures and describe basic first aid that may be administered by a staff member other than the health center staff. The health center is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. There are two designated sick calls, one after breakfast and the other during breira. At all other times campers and counselors will be treated for emergencies only. Only appointed health care personnel should manage the care of all sick and injured campers and staff.

Medication All cabins will receive a first-aid kit containing bandages, Calamine lotion, cotton balls, and disposable gloves. Staff may get additional supplies from the Health Center as needed. AEDs can be found in the Health Center and the Summer Office.

No medication, camper or staff, is to be stored in the bunks. All medication (prescription and over the counter) will be kept in the health center and dispensed by the camp nurse or physician. At no point is a staff member other than appointed health center staff permitted to dispense medicine to a camper, prescription or over the counter, unless on a trip and a pretrip consultation with the head nurse has been conducted. The only exception to this is in the event that a camper requires an Epi-pen. Staff members are trained during staff orientation about proper use of an Epi-pen. Counselors will be made aware of any allergies and certain medical needs for their campers prior to the beginning of the session.

Dealing with Infectious Waste, Contacting Health Center Staff (Emergency Assistance Procedures) There may be times where you must clean up vomit in the cabin or on a trip. When doing so, use gloves and clean up kits that are available at the health center. When handling any bodily fluid, you must wear gloves. If cleanup of blood is necessary, the counselor should contact the health center staff to properly clean and sanitize the area (i.e. use of mask, biohazard bag, etc.).

In the event that a camper or staff member is unconscious, experiencing a seizure, severe fall, or other life threatening emergency please contact the health center immediately. Clear the area of potential hazards and one counselor should remain with the camper/staff member while the other seeks help. Do not attempt to move the camper/staff member

unless advised by a medical professional. Only trained personnel may administer CPR (i.e. nurse, lifeguard). If CPR is administered it is recommended that a barrier be used.

Only appointed health care personnel should manage the care of all sick and injured campers and staff. Syringes, needles or other biohazard waste disposal will be handled by trained health center staff. When in doubt in any medical situation, contact a health center staff member.

Do’s and Do Not’s for a Healthy Summer: DO:       

Use good personal hygiene skills Wash hands frequently Get plenty of rest Drink plenty of water Use insect repellent See the nurse at the first sign of illness, rash or injury.

When hiking, wear long sleeve shirts, pants, socks over the pant legs and a hat.

DO NOT:  Share make-up, lip balm, towels, washcloths, combs, hair accessories, hats, earrings, toothbrushes, linens, pillows, drinking glasses and utensils.  Pierce any part of your body or someone else’s body.

      

Keep open cuts and sores covered.

Sleep head to toe.

Dress appropriately for the weather.

Properly dispose of feminine supplies.

Take a buddy with you when going anywhere.

Apply sunscreen daily and wear a hat.

Utilize cabin first aid kits for minor scratches, nuts and insect bites.

    

Instruct a camper in use of tampons.

Spit on your contact lenses “Self-diagnose” Unnecessarily move an injured person.

Take part in activity that causes injury or pain

CAMPER DISCIPLINE POLICIES Group living entails campers and staff being responsive to the needs of others and developing positive interactions within the camp community. Eisner Camp is a community that provides verbal feedback to individuals regarding their behavior.

Such feedback needs to be: 1. Behavior specific 2. Positively framed 3. Told to the individual out of earshot of other individuals (wherever applicable).

Responsibilities At Camp Each member of the camp has certain responsibilities for themselves and the camp community. Typically campers are responsible for maintaining their living areas, keeping track of their personal belongings and sharing in group responsibilities such as cleaning their bunk, serving as waiters and assisting the community. Use of these responsibilities as punishment is inappropriate and unacceptable! Children are more apt to listen and learn when they are spoken with instead of spoken to. Every moment at camp can become a teachable moment. When a child acts inappropriately take that camper aside and work together to find a way to remedy the situation. Brainstorm possible solutions with the camper.

If the camper continues to act in an improper manner after the counselor has attempted to illicit positive behavior, temporarily step away from the situation (when possible) and discuss it with your supervisor for further assistance. It is your responsibility to inform a supervisor when there is a camper who acts inappropriately after being spoken with. It is also imperative that the child who was the victim of inappropriate behavior be taken aside and supported without blame. A supervisor should also be informed of this kind of situation to ensure that a child who was on the receiving end of unacceptable behavior be carefully watched and supported to help them feel safe.

Punishment/Discipline You will receive thorough training and information regarding Eisner’s behavior policies during our staff training week. All decisions and actions in response to camper discipline issues must be in accordance with this training. If a camper repeatedly misbehaves despite your best efforts, your supervisor must be informed, and he/she will help you. Any additional actions beyond what you have been trained to do cannot be implemented without first discussing your plan with a senior staff member or Director. In no case will physical punishment, withholding of any food/sleep or other abusive like behavior be tolerated at camp. It is unacceptable for any staff member to have disciplinary physical contact with a child at camp. It is also unacceptable for any staff member to verbally abuse a child.

Reporting A child who demonstrates behavior requiring intervention must be brought to the attention of the Unit Head. There will be a record maintained of children’s behavior that requires ongoing intervention. All staff members are required to complete incident reports if a significant behavioral episode (or other type of unusual event) occurs. Such incidents include all kinds of bullying such as pushing, hitting, shoving, kicking, fighting, exclusion, name calling, inappropriate teasing, spreading rumors, gossiping, putting down or making fun of others, being defiant, insubordinate, rude or mocking another person, acting out inappropriately, bizarre behavior or behavior that endangers self or others.The directors will determine at what point parental involvement in specific behavioral incidents is warranted.

ALL OF OUR CAMPER DISCPLINE POLICIES AND SOLUTIONS WILL BE COVERED IN DETAIL DURING OUR STAFF TRAINING WEEK PRIOR TO THE CAMPERS’ ARRIVAL. CHILD ABUSE REPORTING PROTOCOLS Any incident occurring where child abuse is suspected must be immediately reported to the Camp Director or other mandatory reporter. Such incidents may have occurred at camp, within our community, or prior to the camper’s arrival to camp. The Camp Director must be informed in the case of any suspected child abuse, in or out of camp.

At camp there are a number of individuals who are available to consult with staff members on camper issues of child abuse.

In addition to the staff member’s supervisor are the following:  Camp Director  Assistant Directors  Faculty members (Rabbis/Educators/Cantors)  Camp Psychologist  Medical staff

LIVING AT CAMP GETTING AROUND Camp is in a semi-rural area, and transportation off camp is not always the easiest thing. Therefore, it is important that you plan ahead of time when a day off is coming up. To rent a car in the United States it is important that you have a major credit card. Also many car rental agencies are restrictive if you are under the age of 25. Of course, the best way to arrange a day off is by going with one of your fellow staff members who has a car. Many American staff members bring cars to camp and go home on days off. Camp provides shuttles to town each evening staff are allowed off camp.

On most evenings during the week, after “lights out” for campers, staff is permitted to leave camp grounds. There are restaurants in the area as well as small stores to pick up necessities. In the U.S. the drinking age is 21 years old. It is strictly enforced. An identification card with a picture will be demanded and in the case of foreign staff, a passport or drivers license are often the only types of identification accepted. Underage drinking carries very stiff penalties (fines and possibility of jail) for those who serve the liquor as well as those caught drinking. In the case of foreign visitors it can result in revocation of your visa and deportation.

If you are old enough to drink alcohol, please view this as a privilege, and be responsible. Remember that when you return to camp grounds after a night out, you are responsible for the care of many children. Accidents and emergencies can happen at any time, DO NOT COME BACK TO CAMP INTOXICATED OR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ANY SUBSTANCE. Doing so will result in immediate termination of employment (and deportation to your home country, when applicable).

Eisner Camp has a zero tolerance policy. Any illegal drug use or drinking in camp is strictly forbidden. Violation of this rule will result in termination of employment and revocation of your visa. You have all signed the contract addendum regarding drugs and alcohol as well as the code of honor.

When you do leave the camp grounds it is important to remember the following things:  You can only leave camp during the day with your supervisor’s permission.  You have specific times that you can leave camp. If you need to purchase something, plan ahead.  The camp does not supply transportation for personal use.  You need to be back in camp at specified times.

There is a sign-out and sign-in procedure in every sleeping area of camp. You are required to follow the procedures that are explained during staff week.

Each night there will be vans available to shuttle staff members to and from the laundromat, the center of town, and other stops in Great Barrington. Even if staff members are older than 21, drivers will not shuttle staff members to a place that serves alcohol. Should you be found asking a driver to take you to one of these places, the driver will return to camp and inform the director. Staff shuttles are a privilege and should this benefit be misused, camp reserves the right to stop evening shuttle service. The last shuttle will pickup from various locations 30 minutes prior to curfew.

Staff Lending their Cars to Others for Personal Use The URJ Camps strongly discourages staff members from lending to or borrowing vehicles from others due to potential risk of such arrangements, including the potential for bodily harm, vehicular damage or other such hazards. Should a staff member lend their car to or borrow a car from another staff member, the URJ is not liable for any damages that may ensue.

Damage to Vehicles at Camp Personal vehicles damaged while parked on URJ premises are not the responsibility of the camp. The URJ assumes no responsibility for theft or damage to any personal vehicle while on camp property.

STAYING IN TOUCH WHILE AT CAMP Letters & Packages As a matter of security, Eisner camp will not accept any mail that does not contain a return address. Please inform any relatives and friends of this policy.

Packages are available for pickup during Breira by the Summer Office. All packages must be opened in the presence of a staff member.

Internet and Email There are several computers in the Staff Lounge through which you can access the Internet and your e-mail. We ask that ALL staff show respect when on these computers. With a staff of around 250 using them, we need to share computer time. PLEASE limit your time to 20 minutes so that everybody gets a chance to access their email. Camp will be monitoring staff time on these computers to be sure that all staff get equal opportunities as well as to ensure that they are used in an appropriate manner. Wi-Fi is also available in the staff lounge where you can connect using your phone or laptop. Bandwith is limited, so please be considerate about downloading large media files.

Phones Camp has several phones for staff to use located in different areas of camp. The phones are located in the staff lounge and in the Manor House foyer. Phone cards will be available to purchase from the summer office for long distance calls.

The cards are available in increments of ten and twenty dollars. Campers are not permitted to use pay phones. The main camp lines are not for personal use. If you receive a phone call on the camp line, a message will be taken for you. You will find all phone messages with your camp mail. The camp telephone number is 413-528-1652. The office phones are for camp use only.

PERSONAL PROPERTY AT CAMP TV’s/VCR’s/DVD Players No TV’s/VCR’s/DVD/Laptops that play movies are permitted in cabins. All movies shown on camp need to be cleared through the Director, and all movie-viewing equipment items are provided by the Logistics Department.

Damage to Vehicles at Camp Personal vehicles damaged while parked on URJ premises are not the responsibility of the camp. The URJ assumes no responsibility for theft or damage to any personal vehicle while on camp property.

Personal Property and Valuables Camp strongly suggests that any valuables such as stereos, good jewelry or expensive cameras not be brought to camp.

If you feel that you “can’t live without it” you should leave it at home. Staff members are encouraged to keep cash and valuables (including passports) in a staff locker.

Staff Lockers At the beginning of the summer, staff members will have the option of obtaining a locker in the Staff Lounge for the summer.

Any valuables or money that you may have may be kept in these lockers. The lockers are the size of a small safe deposit box and will not store larger items. Please leave expensive electronics at home as there will not be a place to store them on camp. You are responsible for returning the key at the end of the summer. You will be charged $25 for a lost key. This amount will be deducted from your summer payroll.

Personal Sports Equipment Personal sports equipment may be brought to camp. Camp is not responsible for any damage or loss of property. All personal sports equipment must be checked with the sports director and he/she will determine if it is safe for counselors to store this equipment in the bunks with campers. The sports director may ask any staff member to store his/her personal equipment in locked equipment sheds (i.e., baseball bats).

Respect For Camp Property And The Property Of Others Staff members will be held responsible for any willful damage to property belonging to the camp or members of the community. Costs for repair or replacement will be charged to responsible individual. Desecration of campgrounds will not be tolerated. Living quarters and the immediate adjacent areas must be kept clean and in order at all times.

DRESSING & PACKING FOR CAMP Weather Weather in western Massachusetts in the summer varies from day to day. Temperature has been known to rise into the 90s°F (32°C) during the heat of the daytime and drop to the low 50s°F (10°C) during the evenings. It is advisable to bring clothes suitable for a variety of weather. We get A LOT of rain during the summer, so pack appropriate rain gear and foot gear.

Modesty and Dress While we do not have a particular dress code at camp, the clothing policies outlined on page 25 help us create a wholesome environment that mirrors the ethics we attempt to instill in our campers. You can help us achieve this goal by refraining from wearing garments that are too tight or show an unnecessary amount of skin. This means not wearing tops that are too revealing or shorts and skirts that might be too short for camp. Visible undergarments should be avoided for both men and women, and footwear must be worn at all times. Our camp policy states that when present at the pool for instructional swim, one piece bathing suits are required for women and shorts-style suits should be worn by men. When attending a staff pool party, two piece bathing suits are permitted.

Laundry Staff members are able to use our camp’s laundry service at no additional cost. Laundry will be picked up and dropped once a week on designated days. Eisner Camp will provide a laundry bags for each staff member who decides to use our service. The laundry schedule will be determined by the directors, and you will be informed about it when you get to camp.

Laundry sent out is not the responsibility of the camp.

Some staff members prefer to do their own laundry. There is a laundromat about a ten-minute walk from camp. The camp shuttle will provide transportation to the laundromat in the evenings. If staff members decide to do their own laundry they will cover the cost.

Recommended Packing List [See Appendix 1 for a suggested camp packing list] Eisner Camp is located in Great Barrington, MA, which was recently voted “Best Small Town in America” by Smithsonian magazine. Although the camp itself is secluded, we have a number of stores within ten minutes where you will be able to purchase toiletries and even clothes at very reasonable prices. As an international staff member, you do not need to bring large quantities of shampoo and other supplies because they will be available to purchase. We will provide transportation to the local stores within your first couple of days of arrival at camp. In addition, there are places to purchase additional clothing if necessary. Please also note that we provide all bedding and linens for our international staff (bath towels, sheets, pillow, and blanket). These will be available for you to use during the summer, but will need to be returned at the end of the summer. The cost of any linen not returned will be deducted from your salary at the end of the summer.

A Note About Rain Gear / Warm Clothing: For those of you travelling from out of the country or another area of the U.S., these bolded items are important to bring to camp with you. TRAVELING TO CAMP USA Staff Members Camp does NOT arrange your travel. Each staff member is responsible for his or her own travel to camp. If you are traveling from out of the state by plane, you will need to let us know so that we can determine the time and airport for your arrival. Please contact a director so we have a written copy of your travel information.

International Staff Members If you are part of a large group to arrive in NYC at the same time, Eisner Camp will provide a chartered bus to bring you to camp from either an airport or other central location. We will be in touch with information about your travel arrangements.

If you are not part of a larger group, more than likely you will be taking a Peter Pan bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City to get to Great Barrington. Please call our office at (413) 528-1652 at least one hour before your bus departs to confirm that we are expecting you, and we will meet you at the Great Barrington bus station. If you do not call us, we will not know that you are on the bus to pick you up.

Approximately three weeks prior to your arrival, each staff member will receive an email about specific arrangements: whether you will be picked up by an Eisner-arranged vehicle, or if you will be taking public transportation to Eisner Camp. There are two buses from New York City to Great Barrington daily: 1) Leaving at 9:00 AM from Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, NY Arriving at 12:40 PM in Great Barrington, MA 2) Leaving at 5:00 PM PM from Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, NY Arriving at 8:40 PM in at Great Barrington, MA The bus company reserves the right to change the bus times at any time, so please look at the website a few days prior to your departure to confirm the correct times. And if you are traveling via public bus, save your receipt from the purchase of your bus ticket and camp will reimburse you when you arrive. The ticket will cost $43, so please make sure you bring the appropriate amount of money. APPENDIX 4: WORKING FOR THE UNION FOR REFORM JUDAISM (URJ) We welcome you to the Union for Reform Judaism. No matter which department, regional office, camp or Affiliate may have engaged you, you are now part of the Union for Reform Judaism (“URJ” or “Union”) staff. We are a not-for-profit Reform Jewish organization, founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1873. It is our role to serve our member congregations and their congregant-members.

The mission of the URJ is to provide vision as well as programmatic and administrative support, to serve as a resource in other ways for member congregations and to perpetuate and advance Reform Judaism and the Reform Movement. To fulfill its mission, the URJ has four major goals, as stated in the URJ Constitution and Bylaws: 1. To promote the enrichment and growth of Judaism through Reform Jewish congregations 2. To foster the vibrancy of Reform Judaism through Torah (lifelong Jewish education), avodah (worship of God through prayer and observance) and g’milut chasidim (the pursuit of justice, peace and deeds of loving-kindness) 3. ABOUT REFORM JUDAISM Q. What is Reform Judaism?

A. Reform Judaism is an approach to Judaism that seeks to balance modernity and tradition. Reform Jews relate to Judaism as organic and dynamic, with a Torah that is continually open to interpretation. Reform Jews believe in studying Jewish tradition and using that knowledge and understanding to make informed choices about Jewish practice, which depends upon a lifelong commitment to Jewish learning. In North America, Reform Jews affiliate with over 900 congregations, which constitute the members of the URJ. There are approximately 1.5 million Reform Jews, making Reform Judaism the largest and fastest-growing Jewish movement in the world.

Q. How does the URJ promote the enrichment and growth of Judaism through Reform congregations?

A. The URJ is responsible for providing leadership and service to Reform congregations. The URJ prepares human, print and on-line resources to respond to articulated congregational needs. Just to cite a few examples: The URJ Press publishes materials explicitly for Reform Jews to use at home, in schools and at camps, as well as in synagogues. The URJ Program Division provides resources for congregational leaders, professional and volunteer. Reform Judaism magazine, sent to 305,000 Reform households four times a year, covers development within the Reform Movement while interpreting world events and Jewish tradition from a Reform perspective. The Religious Action Center in Washington, DC is the voice of Reform Judaism in the American political arena.

Q. What is the Torah?

A. The Torah is the most sacred text of the Jewish people. The word “Torah” means “Instruction.” The term “Torah” most often refers to the first five books of the Bible—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books narrate God’s creation of the world as well as the birth and early development of the Children of Israel (eventually known as the Jewish people). Moses, as the preeminent prophet, is the dominant personality in the last four books. Another meaning of the word “Torah” includes all Jewish teaching inspired by classical, sacred texts, e.g. the Bible, Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash, and prayer book.

Q. How does the URJ support the State of Israel?

A. The URJ has several Affiliates, including ARZA/World Union, North America, the Reform Movement’s advocate on Israeli issues. The URJ sponsors educational experiences in Israel for children and adults to strengthen the links between Reform Jews and the State of Israel. The URJ Press publishes study materials for children and adults to provide authoritative information about the history and growth of Israel. One of the four branches of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is in Jerusalem, and all rabbinical, cantorial and education students spend their first year studying in Israel.

Q. How has Reform Judaism changed since 1996?

A. Under the leadership of its president, Rabbi Eric H. Yoffe, the URJ has recently concentrated on two dimensions of Reform Judaism: literacy and worship, which complement the Movement’s longstanding excellence in the arena of social justice thought and action. This has been reflected in staff changes, volunteer leadership development, and, above all, in programmatic resources. Reform Judaism is true to its name when it is responsive to reform and responsible to Judaism.

Emphasis on adult learning, or, more accurately, lifelong learning coupled with practice is an essential building block for the next generation of Reform Jews for whom Rabbi Yoffe is a strong champion.

The use of computers, e-mail, and the Internet is available to URJ employees on a limited basis. Along with this right to use the Union’s equipment and resources and to obtain and exchange necessary information on the Internet and through e-mail transmission comes the obligation to use the Union’s equipment and resources reasonably, responsibly, and in a manner that promotes the goals of the URJ and in no way interferes with employees’ performance or functions at the URJ. Inappropriate use of the Union’s equipment, programs or accounts may result in termination of the right to use these items and, depending on the circumstances, may also result in discipline, up to and including discharge.

The following are rules that are to be applied consistently and reasonably to any employee using a computer, computer equipment, or computer programs or accounts owned or maintained by the URJ, including use of such items or accounts to access the Internet. When using any Union-owned or -maintained computer equipment or resources, an employee should adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Employees should not transmit, publish, display, retrieve or store any information or material in violation of state or federal law. This includes but is not limited to actions that would be in violation of federal copyright laws.

2. Employees should not transmit, publish, display, retrieve or store any information or material that is obscene, profane, sexually abusive or sexually explicit.

3. Employees should not transmit, publish, display, retrieve or store any information that reasonably could be construed to create a hostile or offensive environment for members of a particular sex, religion, race, age group or ethnic background or for individuals with physical or mental disabilities except as necessary for the employee’s performance or functions for the URJ. 4. Employees should not engage in conduct reasonably likely to disrupt use of the Internet or use of other URJ computer equipment or resources.

5. Occasional personal computer use is allowed as long as it does not interfere with employee’s performance or functions for the URJ. 6. Employees should not engage in conduct reasonably likely to compromise any system security device or security program.

7. Employees should not install, download, copy or run any non-URJ approved software, hardware or programs on the URJ’s computer equipment that might possibly damage the Union’s computer system.

8. Deletion of any files or data should not occur without the user’s express consent. Employees should not engage in conduct likely to harm or destroy data or software maintained by another or harm or destroy computer equipment.

9. While legally the computer and records on the computer are the property of the URJ, employees should respect the privacy of other employees and not access the files of other employees’ computers unless:  Employees have the permission of that other employee  Access to the other employee’s computer or its records are necessary for the employee’s performance or functions for the URJ Employees should remember that unlike documents that are typewritten or written by hand, any document, e-mail, accessed Web sites or other communications created with the URJ’s computer system remains in the URJ’s computer system.

If any employee has questions about whether a certain activity is prohibited by the above rules or if the employee believes that an exception to any of the above rules is warranted, the employee should seek advice concerning the issue or request an exception to a specific rule from the Union’s CAO or his or her designee. Such requests will be responded to in an expeditious and reasonable manner.

Drug-Free Workplace URJ maintains a drug-free workplace in all of its offices or facilities and requires drug-free performance of its employees wherever they may be assigned. The implementation of this policy will, of course, be consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other applicable laws. Drugs may not be brought to, used, offered or sold at any URJ gathering or facility.

Employees in violation of this aspect of the policy are subject to immediate termination for gross misconduct. The use of alcohol except in limited circumstances or for ceremonial requirements only is likewise prohibited.

If an employee is at a URJ camp in an apparently impaired condition, that employee will be sent home in such a way as to maximize safe arrival. If a staff member admits to a substance abuse problem prior to such conduct being “discovered” by the URJ, the URJ may suggest and/or permit that he or she seek appropriate treatment.

Discrimination, Harassment, and Offensive Conduct All decisions affecting employment, promotion, compensation, assignment and other aspects of the URJ’s work environment shall be made on the basis of qualifications, performance and other pertinent work-related factors and without discrimination against any person on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, age, religion (except where it constitutes a bona fide occupational qualification), national origin, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation or any legally protected status.

The URJ shall not tolerate any harassment of or other offensive conduct toward any individual based upon race, color, creed, sex, age, religion, national origin, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation, or any legally protected status. Discriminatory harassment and other offensive conduct includes any conduct, whether verbal, visual or physical,

which creates an abusive and hostile work environment and which has the purpose or effect of interfering with an individual’s work performance or development.

This policy applies to all employees and to all volunteers working on behalf of the URJ. Prohibited Conduct: Preventing harassment and other offensive conduct requires increased awareness by everyone at the URJ of the impact that one’s actions may have on others. In determining whether harassment or other offensive conduct has occurred, it is not a sufficient excuse that the alleged offender “meant no harm” or was “just kidding.” Instead, the standard to be applied is the perspective of a reasonable recipient of the alleged harassing or offensive conduct.

Special attention is given to sexual harassment in this policy. Sexual harassment includes, among other things, unwelcome sexual advances, unwelcome requests for sexual favors and other unwelcome verbal, physical or visual conduct of a sexual nature when: 1. Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment.

2. Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as a basis for employment decisions affecting the person, whether or not such decisions have direct economic consequences.

3. Such conduct has the purpose or effect, intentionally or unintentionally, of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment.

Behavior defined in the policy as sexual harassment may occur between people of the opposite or same gender.

Consensual personal relationships between individuals in the URJ are not prohibited by the policy. Those who engage in such relationships, however, should be aware that questions may later arise regarding the actual freedom of choice of one of the parties, particularly when a superior/subordinate relationship exists between them.

Harassment is not limited to regular business hours on the work site. Instances in which it can occur may include workrelated meetings, social events, ceremonies or other non-work-related occasions.

Education and Prevention: The URJ firmly believes that prevention is the best tool for the elimination of harassment.

Accordingly, the URJ intends to take all necessary steps to prevent harassment from occurring, such as affirmatively raising the subject, expressing strong disapproval and developing methods to sensitize all concerned.

The URJ will also take reasonable steps to inform volunteers of its opposition to harassment in all forms.

Procedures for Raising Concerns Regarding Harassment and Offensive Conduct: Should there be an instance or complaint of discrimination and/or harassment, individuals should contact the camp director, associate or assistant camp director or site director, human resources director, chief administrative officer or any member of the EO Committee for prompt assistance. (For current members of the EO Committee please contact the URJ HR Department) All actions taken in response to requests for review will be undertaken with the maximum possible confidentiality, subject to the requirements inherent in conducting a fair review. Retaliation against any individual for reporting violations of the policy or for participating in the process—whether by the recipient of the allegations or someone else—will not be tolerated and will be subject to strict discipline. For more information about the E.O Committee and a complete copy of the Discrimination, Harassment and Offensive Conduct policy please contact HR. Personnel Files URJ maintains up-to-date personnel files on all employees. It is essential for each employee to furnish correct and if necessary updated information to the camp business office promptly as well as to maintain the names of persons to contact in case of an emergency. The URJ will utilize this information to implement benefits, if applicable, and to provide information, where necessary, to those who permissibly need to know. Such information would include:  Home address  Home telephone number, fax or e-mail  Emergency contact  Marital status and number of dependents  Military status  Medical insurance status An employee can arrange to review his or her own personnel file by contacting the camp business office.

Release of Information Records and information that the URJ is legally required to furnish will be provided only by camp office, as necessary. With regard to “reference” checks, the only information that HR will routinely provide to third parties is the employee’s position, date of hire and current or last position.

Solicitation and Distribution Employees must not solicit other employees or distribute non-URJ literature during employment at URJ camps to the extent that such conduct would interfere with employees’ performance or functions at the URJ. This also includes solicitation and distribution through the use of the telephone, fax and e-mail. Non-employees of the URJ and those who are not approved vendors are prohibited from distributing literature of any kind or soliciting employees for any purpose at any time on URJ property.

Conflict of Interest No member of the Board officer, or employee of the URJ shall, directly or indirectly, have any financial interest in or derive any income from; or be employed by any person, firm, corporation or any other entity doing business with the Union without full disclosure in writing to and approval from the Board of Trustees. Employees of the URJ must disclose in full in writing to and seek approval from the president of the URJ. No member of the Board of Trustees, officer or employee of the URJ shall directly or indirectly accept money, gifts, gratuities or favors of any kind, unusual or excessive entertainment or hospitality, loans, guarantees or preferential treatment from any person, firm, corporation or any other entity doing business or seeking to do business with the URJ under circumstances from which it can presumably be inferred that the purpose and/or effect of such was to influence.

No member of the Board of Trustees and no officer or employee of the URJ shall knowingly divulge to any person not authorized by the URJ to receive the same confidential information received in the performance of his or her duties, nor use such information for personal profit, nor transmit any knowledge of any confidential decision or confidential information that might be prejudicial to the interest of the URJ to any unauthorized person except in connection with the discharge of his or her organizational responsibilities.
