The Panhellenic Experience Our Purpopse The purpose of this non-profit organization shall be to promote cooperation among sororities, to formulate rules and procedures for recruitment and new member education, to regulate intersorority activities, and to insure cooperation between sororities and other student organizations and the University administration.

Where does Panhel Come From?

What is Panhel?

The Panhellenic Association, or Panhel, is the comprehensive name of the entire women’s sorority system. Every woman who is a member of one of the ten sororities on campus is a member of the Panhellenic Association. The Panhellenic Council is the governing body of the women’s sorority system at the University of Rhode Island.

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the governing body of the Panhellenic Council. All policies instituted by the Panhellenic Council have been developed in accordance with NPC policies and recommendations.

Vice President of Recruitment and Public Relations Hey Ladies! Welcome to URI Panhellenic Recruitment 2021! We're so excited for you to join our community and find your homes. The entire recruitment team has worked really hard to put together the best recruitment experience possible. This process can be stressful, but the ending is so worth it! Remember to keep and open mind, and you will find your sisters!

By joining a sorority, you will make lifelong friends as well as have the opportunity to give back to the campus and community through philanthropy and service. You will also be able to grow as a person, a leader and a friend. Although college may only be four years, the memories made and friendships gained will last a lifetime.

Throughout the next weeks you will have the opportunity to meet women from all of the 10 sororities on our campus. Remember to enjoy this week, take time to breathe and reflect. Be your most authentic self, there is a chapter for everyone on our campus no matter your background, personality or interests. Keep an open mind and trust the process and you will find a chapter that will help you grow as a person and align with your core values.

My advice to you is to keep an open mind and relax during the entire experience.

You are going to meet women throughout this week that will end up being your lifelong friends. Remember that no matter which letter you end up wearing, we are all panhellenic sisters. You are about to join a whole community of women who have so much to share with you.

The Recruitment Team, your Recruitment Counselors, and myself will be available throughout the process for questions or if you need to talk to someone about how the process is going. We are here to help you and ensure you have the best recruitment experience possible and help you find your home!

Map of Fraternity Circle

During recruitment, you will walk between houses, as well as stand outside while attendance is taken. It is vital that you are on time to all of your scheduled recruitment events so that recruitment can run smoothly.

Please allow yourself plenty of travel time to get to the houses.

A video tour of fraternity circle will be sent to you prior to the start of recruitment, and there will be RC's stationed throughout the area in case you need help.

Round One: Casual and Comfortable! You will be provided with a Panhellenic tshirt for the first round.

Do - wear the shirt provided to you by Panhel

Don't - wear a different shirt

Do - wear nice pants/skirt and a more formal shirt

Don't- wear super ripped jeans or a t-shirt

Do - wear a sundress or nice pants

Don't - wear a tube top or a super short skirt

Round Two: Something you would wear to a nice lunch.

Round Three: Something that you would wear to a nice dinner.

Round Four: Semi-formal!

Preference round is the most formal round during recruitment.

Do - wear a nice jumpsuit or romper

Don't - wear a "going out" dress

Check the weather! Recruitment takes place rain or shine and you will have to walk around and line up outside.

Bring a jacket if it's cold and an umbrella if it rains.

Test drive your shoes before recruitment starts! You don't want to find out that your heels give you blisters or that you can't walk in them on the day of parties.

Hair and Makeup - wear whatever level of hair and makeup you are most comfortable in! We want to to be comfortable and feel like yourself.

Remember that all of these are just suggestions. At then end of the day, we want you to dress in way that makes YOU feel good. We want you to feel confident going through recruitment, so dress however you feel your best!

Greek Terminology NEW MEMBER A woman who participated in recruitment and who has accepted a bid from a sorority, but has yet to be initiated.

BID A formal invitation to become a new member of a sorority.

ACTIVE A sorority member currently in college who has been formally initiated by their chapter.

LEGACY A woman whose sister, mother or grandmother is an alumna or active member of a sorority.

Not all sororities have the same legacy policy.

NEW MEMBER EDUCATOR A chapter member who has been elected to lead the New Member Education process and prepare the new members for initiation.

INITIATION A formal Ceremony in which new members learn the secret rituals of their sorority and become active sisters in their chapter.

POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER A full-time student participating in Formal Recruitment. Also referred to as PNM. RECRUITMENT COUNSELOR Sorority woman who positively promotes sorority life to potential new members before, after, and during the recruitment process. Recruitment Counselors are all disaffiliated from their chapters to provide you with the best possible advice and recruitment experience.

They are your best friends and go-to's throughout this process!

PREFERENCE Often shorted to ‘Pref.’ This is the final round where PNM’s will rank their desired chapters in order of preference through completing an MRABA form.

CHAPTER The collegiate group of a national sorority.

SISTER An initiated, active sorority member.

ROUND The four different segments of Formal Recruitment. The rounds consist of Meet the Sisters, Sisterhood, Philanthropy and Preference.

Scheduling & Accommodations Recruitment Schedule We recognize that You may have Scheduling conflicts with recruitment for religious or academic reasons. We are happy to modify your schedule so you can still participate in recruitment.

We also recognize that recruitment conflicts with the Jewish high holidays.

Chapter Dues Breakdown In order to be a member of a chapter, all sisters must pay dues each semester to contribute to the organization. Below is a breakdown of each chapter's dues and some other expenses you may come across as a new member and sister.

Housing Cost Breakdown All of the chapters here at URI have an expectation that active sisters will live in the chapter's house. Each chapter has different requirements for how long sisters are expected to live in the house, and they will discuss this with you further during the rounds
