Much of the company’s success can be attributed to the passion that the pair behind the concept, Jacqueline “Jac” Hunt and Lisa “Jack” Dempsey, exude. “One of the highlights over the past nine years was opening our first retail store,” says Jac. “Seeing the brand in its entirety… the whole experience is amazing. It feels a long way from where it started.” “Seeing someone wearing the clothes – that’s still exciting as well,” adds Lisa.

At a time when other boutiques are pulling back their physical presence and moving more online, the duo are expanding apace: with their new boutique in Sydney’s Strand Arcade recently unveiled and at Emporium in Melbourne opening in 2014. “You can’t have online without a store. It’s still important that people have a day out,” says Lisa.

The new Sydney boutique has a look that is very much in line with the fashion brand itself. “It’s effortless, luxurious but still accessible; it’s low-key, using natural materials; it’s soft but still beautiful,” says Jac. “We have a similar aesthetic and taste level,” Jac continues. “Our vision is the same. It’s high quality, very wearable, essential pieces; it’s not a big fashion statement, it works in with what you have.”

Q&A JAC+ JACK Inspiration for spring 2014?

Jac: Because we’re turning 10, we decided to look backwards. We went through our archives, and saw that some things never change. We pulled out styles from nine years ago – with a little tweaking, they can be really modern again. And we’re revisiting our colour palettes and pulling out what’s relevant.

Must-have piece from the current in-store collection?

Lisa: The Arthur shirt – it’s a women’s white cotton shirt. It’s very lightweight.

You can wear it anywhere, anytime.

Jac: Our Egyptian cotton crew neck in navy. It’s a piece you can wear everyday.

A PLOTTED HISTORY OF

1820s

Early 1900s

1901 – 20

A trader from the South Seas builds the first Walsh Bay wharf to accommodate ships entering and exiting Sydney Harbour. Walsh Bay’s reputation as a commercial port begins and soon it becomes a hive for maritime activities.

Without a seawall and awash with rubbish, Walsh Bay becomes the site of a Bubonic Plague outbreak. Wharves are demolished to bring the disease under control.

The Sydney Harbour Trust is established to rebuild the port.

Henry Walsh oversees the reconstruction of the new double-decked finger wharves, built with a series of bridges connecting the upper levels to the high roads of Millers Point. A seawall is added, and sandstone cliffs are excavated to form Hickson Road.

Walsh Bay is the heart and soul of Sydney’s creative industries. Once the city’s main port, the waterside suburb brings together dance troupes and actors, musicians and painters in heritage-listed finger wharves that jut into the western harbour. With a stunning backdrop of sandstone cliffs and the Harbour Bridge, Walsh Bay’s wharves, shore sheds and bond stores are also dotted with cool cafes and restaurants. Here, we take a look at the area's transformation.

1970s – 80s

1997 – 2004

Changes in shipping technology see Walsh Bay cease operations as a commercial port.

After years of abandonment, in 1984 Pier 4/5 is redeveloped to house Sydney Theatre Company, Bangarra Dance Theatre and other arts organisations. The design is applauded for its adaptive re-use of a heritage structure.

A Transfield/Mirvac joint venture sees Walsh Bay redeveloped into its current form, a mixeduse precinct integrating arts, waterfront dining, commercial and residential.

TODAY A thriving cultural and creative hub with multiple layers of experiences, Walsh Bay is at once historic and happening.

Streets are lined with vibrant art sculptures, dancers dart between theatres and rehearsal studios, actors hang out in harbourside cafes and music rings out over the water. It’s Sydney’s artistic heart. And it’s only getting better.

TURNING THE CORNER As passionate about Marrickville as they are about food, Alex Elliott-Howery and James Grant are transforming Sydney’s café scene one pickle jar at a time.

She may have fallen into cooking as a career, but Alex Elliott-Howery hasn’t looked back since she launched Cornersmith with her husband James Grant (ex-Allpress Espresso and Mecca) in 2011. The Marrickville cafe is one of Sydney’s new breed of establishments with a sustainable approach to dining. “I like using seasonal ingredients, home cooking and ethical companies, and I avoid waste and try not to import,” says Elliott-Howery. At Cornersmith, this translates into regularly changing menus to make the most of fresh and available produce, sourced from small-scale makers and growers or made in-house.

It’s an approach that has become so popular that Elliott-Howery recently launched the Cornersmith Picklery, where her team pickle and preserve everything they can get their hands on, selling the jars as well as produce from suppliers and hosting cooking classes – pickling, cheesemaking and breadmaking.

Sydney’s warmer months see Cornersmith chalk up delicious dishes using seasonal ingredients. “In spring everything is light, fresh and pretty: there’s beans and peas, fetta and labna, spring lamb. In summer there are stone fruit, tomatoes, pickled cucumber and zucchini.”

STYLE SETTER SERIES #5: KEN DONE

LIFE IN COLOUR One of Australia’s most well known artists, Ken Done continues to reinvent his vibrant painting style, more than 30 years after his first solo exhibition.

His paintings of Australia are as iconic as they come: Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge; beaches, boats and bronzed bodies; palm trees and parrots; the sun and the sand, all depicted in eye-popping hues: sunflower yellow, lipstick red, a spectrum of blue. And they’ve graced everything from gallery walls to swimwear, coffee mugs to magnets. Arguably Australia’s most well known artist, Ken Done sums up everything that is good about Sydney, and still turns out pieces more than 30 years after his first solo exhibition.

While his vibrant, summery style has not faltered, his subjects have certainly changed over the years: “People now have more of an understanding of the breadth of work I do,” Done says, nodding to recent collections depicting seagardens and underwater worlds, among others. Despite all his achievements in Australia and overseas, Done still says that he’s most proud of the fact that his whole family work together on the business. “There are four of us, my wife and two children. I also have three grandchildren, and I just can’t wait for them to be part of it as well.”
