Tackling Poverty, Changing Lives.

ANNUAL REPORT

LETTER FROM THE CEO & CO-FOUNDER 2020 was a year of community resilience. The COVID-19 pandemic made us further think about the importance of grassroots community resources. In the face of unprecedented challenges caused by the pandemic, Urban Upbound works hand in hand with our community members to make sure that our neighbors are fed and housed. Following the needs of the community, we launched our relief effort initiatives as soon as March 2020. The initiatives include weekly distributions of over 150,000 lbs of fresh and non-perishable food to approximately 7,650 New Yorkers through 28 sites throughout New York City and Long Island. Urban Upbound also gives out grants to clients who need help paying their basic necessities, such as rent and utility bills. By the end of the year, after three months of the grant program’s initiation, we rolled out more than $21,500 in grants to 27 clients. We also added a team of Resource Navigators who completed 7,000 cases of checking in on high-risk and self-quarantine New Yorkers at the end of 2020. With the rising number of unemployment last year, we understood that even though we wouldn’t be able to meet in person, the needs for our core services would only increase during this trying time. We made sure that we stayed open. Our team designed a virtual workspace and built the necessary setup so that counselors could work remotely and receive call appointments from the safety of their homes. Our year-end financial results as of June 30, 2020 show continued stability and strength as outlined in the audit results of this report. We saw a significant increase in individual donations, even when we allocated the same percentage of resources for fundraising. In the last two consecutive years (2018 and 2019), individual donations made up 9% of our overall funding sources. Last year, it was 13% of our funding sources. This past year put a pause in everyone’s life to reflect on what’s most important to them. For us, it’s our community and what we can do to help them become resilient. I am deeply honored to have an incredible team of staff, who can rapidly adapt to the ever-changing work environment when we turn into virtual workspaces. I’m grateful to our leadership team, the Board of Directors, our dedicated volunteers, and committed donors for all that you have helped us accomplish. We hope that you will continue to support us and our mission.

APPROACH At the core of Urban Upbound's mission and work is our belief that place-based, peer-led support is essential to helping NYCHA residents achieve economic progress. Urban Upbound builds a culture of economic empowerment in NYCHA developments, providing residents with access to formal and informal networks that encourage employment, education, and advancement. Key programs include: ●

Employment Services For Youth and Adults Urban Upbound's Employment Services team provides job readiness training and one-on-one counseling to help community members gain and retain meaningful employment in high-growth sectors. Our programs have helped thousands of individuals reach their long and short term success goals by means of employment, job retention and career advancement.

College Access and Youth Development Since our launch, the College Access Program has helped hundreds of low-income students and their families prepare for the SAT, apply to and enroll in college, secure financial aid, and transition successfully from high school to college. Our program includes direct instruction, guided group work, independent practice, individual counseling and hands-on activities designed to make classes engaging and fun. Our program has helped students improve their SAT scores by an average of 138 points over the last three years and since its inception it has secured over $10 million in financial aid.

Tax Preparation Urban Upbound’s free tax preparation services offer a smart alternative for NYC families who are often forced to pay high fees through paid services that can cost hundreds of dollars. Providing free services enables qualified working families and individuals to take full advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) – which provides an important lifeline in tough economic times, and other credits. Families utilize every dollar of their tax refund, increasing their purchasing power or allowing them to start a savings plan.

APPROACH ●

Financial Counseling & Affordable Housing Urban Upbound’s certified financial counselors provide low-to-moderate income individuals and families with a suite of financial services geared toward achieving financial literacy, stability, and success. As part of Urban Upbound’s overall strategy for tackling poverty, we provide free one-on-one and group financial counseling services, and workshops to educate residents on important financial topics. Urban Upbound offers affordable housing services, including workshops, individual consultations, and educational courses on affordable rental and on first-time homeownership. We are committed to providing quality financial educational services to guide clients in the right direction.

Financial Inclusion The Urban Upbound Federal Credit Union offers affordable and relevant financial services including access to capital, asset-building vehicles and ownership stakes to its members. The credit union is located across from Queensbridge Houses, the largest public housing development in the country, and down the street from Ravenswood Houses. It serves as an economic anchor, helping ensure that as Long Island City continues to change, the growth benefits residents throughout the neighborhood by keeping neighborhood assets locally owned and controlled.

Business Innovation In order to advance our community revitalization efforts, Urban Upbound creates initiatives that increase assets, resources, and economic opportunities in the communities we serve. Our Worker Cooperatives Program works with local entrepreneurs to incubate worker-owned, democratically-run businesses. Through our program, we have been able to incubate five cooperative businesses: OnPoint Security, OSHA Solutions, Paw Partners, Sunlight Ecoservices, and Progressive Cleaning Solutions, and to support many other others with technical assistance and educational services.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES SUCCESS STORY

Elijah Thomas

“I wouldn’t have the means to take part in this training if it wasn’t because the generosity of the donors.”

Elijah Thomas lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When Elijah’s 17 years of experience in the security field didn’t help him obtain a new job, he looked for opportunities in other fields. He saw an Urban Upbound flyer advertising our free virtual OSHA 30 training and decided to sign up. After completing the course, Elijah got a job in a landscaping company. The training helped equip him with the safety skills needed to work in an environment that would require him to be frequently suspended 15-30 ft in the air.

COLLEGE ACCESS & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SUCCESS STORY

Shirley Shiue

The skills Shirley honed while working with Urban Upbound’s career counselor helped her get accepted to a free training program for the career that she pursues.

Shirley Shiue joined the Urban Upbound Youth Development Program in January 2019. She wanted a career in administration, so our employment counselor worked with her on various job readiness exercises to help her develop soft skills. After participating in a tour of the Grace Institute that Urban Upbound organized, Shirley applied for their Administrative & Healthcare Professional Training Program and aced the interview as well as the aptitude test. She was accepted into the program and successfully completed the program in December 2020.

When the in-person services were paused due to the pandemic, we set up a secure online system (www.uutax.org) in English and Spanish, so clients could upload their documents from the safety of their home. Our tax preparers would then prepare the returns and call clients once everything was complete or if they needed any other information.

OUR RESULTS ●

$12,371,604 in tax refunds returned to the community.

TAX PREPARATION SUCCESS STORY

Ron Schaum

“It was a really painless and easy process. Everyone was always very pleasant, nice and polite.”

Ron Schaum had his fair share of bad experiences with tax services. After a thorough research on tax preparation services he decided to come to Urban Upbound. Our tax preparer was able to claim all credits Ron qualified for on his tax return. As a result, Ron received a refund nearly three times the amount of what he was used to receiving when filing elsewhere. Asked about his experience, Ron said: “It was a really painless and easy process. Everyone was always very pleasant, nice and polite”.

FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT SUCCESS STORY

Nelson Castillo

From helping with unemployment insurance applications to budgeting his monthly spending, an Urban Upbound financial counselor helps Nelson every step of the way.

Nelson Castillo met with an Urban Upbound financial counselor in early March 2020. He came to us with the goal of paying off debt and increasing his credit score, thinking of a mortgage loan in the near future. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a pause on this plan. After being furloughed, Nelson and the counselor worked together on his unemployment insurance application. Shorty after, he found a new job. Now, Nelson follows a budget that allows him to save regularly, and with the help of our counselor he continues to monitor his credit, preparing for his dream of owning his home.

Wanting to rebuild his life, he opened a bank account at the Urban Upbound Federal Credit Union (UUFCU). Our Member Service Representative, who is a certified financial counselor suggested Ricardo take the UUFCU credit builder loan and apply for a credit card after learning that he needed to fix his credit. In less than a year, Ricardo went from not having a credit score to a score of 689. Ricardo still works together with our counselor to make sure that he makes the right financial decisions.
