Reynoldsburg’s 3rd Annual Juneteenth

Juneteenth is an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States Also referred to as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day and Emancipation Day

On June 19, 1865 the Union Soldiers led by Major Gen Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas to make an announcement two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of Jan 1, 1863 Essentially the soldiers proclaimed the executive orders that those who were enslaved were free

On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed bill into law making Juneteenth a national holiday

Reynoldsburg is a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. It sits in Franklin, Fairfield and Licking counties Per the 2020 census it has a population of 38,016

Reynoldsburg, Ohio – On, Saturday, June 18, 2023 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. the City of Reynoldsburg is hosting its Third Annual Juneteenth Celebration: Rooted in Our Legacy, at Huber Park, 1640 Davidson Drive. It is an admission free event. We are extremely excited to be partnering with the African American Male Wellness Agency who will provide health screenings as well as other area healthcare-related companies and agencies. Covid-19 vaccines and boosters will be available, too,” said Meredith Lawson-Rowe, Ward 4 Councilwoman. The event will include a 5K to benefit the Columbus Ice organization Registration details for the race may be found at www columbusice com

The outside celebration will feature vendors, food trucks, a host of sponsors, live music from 4 His Purpose Gospel Band and ColoBoration Poly Genre Band featuring Priscilla Woodson At 12 noon, there will be a short program hosted by Rodney Dunigan, Managing Editor and anchor of the weekend newscast on ABC6 and Fox 28 News.

The featured speaker for the celebration is Judge Laurel Beatty Blunt During the program we will award the Inaugural George J Stebout Juneteenth Legacy Award Named in honor of Mr Stebout, a

Veteran, buried in the Historical Seceder Cemetery, the award recipient will be honored for his or her contributions to our community in the areas of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Mr Stebout is included on the mural on Main Street and furthers the conversation that there were free Black people who lived and worked in Reynoldsburg before the Emancipation Proclamation. The Stebouts were the only African American family that lived within the village boundaries of 1860 Mr Stebout ran for Village Council in (or around) April of 1863. He obviously did not win the election, because he joined the army shortly thereafter

Ward 4 Councilwoman Meredith LawsonRowe shared, “What I find fascinating is that he is buried in Seceder Cemetery, the oldest historical cemetery in Reynoldsburg, this is historic because during that era of our history, it was unheard of to have Blacks and Whites buried in the same cemetery Learning this history makes me even more proud to call Reynoldsburg home. As we continue to strive be an inclusive community, we stand on the shoulders of those brave Seceders who settled here who regarded religious freedom and personal freedom to not be determined by one’s skin color.”

Black Media Ownership: A Necessary Force for Change

There are several ways that policymakers and industry leaders can prioritize initiatives that support Black media ownership:

Black media ownership has long been a key issue in the fight for representation and diversity in the media industry

Despite comprising approximately 13% of the total US population, Black Americans own just 3.3% of full-power commercial television stations and 5 3% of full-power commercial radio stations, according to a 2019 report by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) This lack of representation has significant consequences for the way Black Americans are portrayed in media and for the types of stories that are told about them

Black-owned media outlets have a unique role to play in promoting a more accurate and nuanced representation of Black Americans and their experiences These outlets have the ability to challenge negative stereotypes and to provide a platform for Black voices and perspectives that may not be represented in mainstream media

In addition to the cultural and social benefits of Black media ownership, there are also economic benefits

According to a 2020 report by the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), Black-owned newspapers contribute significantly to the economies of the communities they serve, providing jobs and generating revenue through advertising and other sources

Despite these benefits, Black media ownership remains a challenge. A lack of access to capital and other resources can make it difficult for Black entrepreneurs to start and maintain media outlets. This is why it is important for policymakers and industry leaders to prioritize initiatives that support Black media ownership and to work towards greater representation and diversity in the media industry

Increase funding for Black-owned media outlets: One way to support Black media ownership is by increasing funding for these outlets through grants, loans, and other financial assistance. This can help Black entrepreneurs start and maintain media outlets, and can also allow these outlets to invest in new technology, equipment, and other resources

Provide training and education: Providing training and education opportunities for Black media professionals can help to increase the pool of qualified candidates for leadership positions within Blackowned media outlets This can also help to improve the overall quality and sustainability of these outlets

Address structural barriers to Black media ownership: Structural barriers, such as a lack of access to capital and other resources, can make it difficult for Black entrepreneurs to start and maintain media outlets. Policymakers and industry leaders can address these barriers by implementing policies and initiatives that make it easier for Black entrepreneurs to access funding and other resources

Support media literacy and education: Encouraging media literacy and education can help to create a more informed and engaged audience for Black-owned media outlets This can involve initiatives such as funding media literacy programs or collaborating with media outlets to provide educational resources

FATHER'S DAY

Shifting the Narrative: Changing the Portrayal of Black Fathers in Media

The media has long played a significant role in shaping public perceptions and reinforcing stereotypes. One area where this is particularly evident is in the portrayal of black fathers. For far too long, black fathers have been misrepresented as absent, uninvolved, or disinterested in the lives of their children and families. However, it is essential to challenge these narratives and recognize the truth about black fatherhood

A study conducted by Color of Change and Family Story, analyzing hundreds of news stories and opinion pieces between 2015 and 2016, revealed a stark contrast in how black and white families are depicted in the media Black families were often portrayed as poor, dependent on welfare, and linked to criminality, while white families were depicted as socially stable

These representations perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to the negative perception of black fathers. The mischaracterization of black fathers as absentee is rooted in the flawed use of non-marital birthrates as a measure of parental involvement. This assumption wrongly implies that black fathers who are not married to the mothers of their children are not engaged parents However, research tells a different story

A 2013 report by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) found that black fathers were more likely than white fathers to engage in daily activities with their children, such as bathing, dressing, helping with homework, and attending activities Contrary to the media portrayal, black fathers demonstrate a high level of involvement and nurturing towards their children

It is crucial to challenge the prevailing narrative and celebrate the reality of black fatherhood. At Urban Trendsetters, we are committed to changing the way black fathers are portrayed in the media. We recognize the importance of showcasing positive examples of black fathers' love, care, and dedication to their children. To combat harmful stereotypes, we call for more black journalists in newsrooms to help set a better standard and provide accurate social and historical context By amplifying the voices of black experts and reaching out to them for insight, journalists can ensure accurate and nuanced reporting But the change doesn't stop there We invite everyone to join us in celebrating black dads Less than half of black fathers believe that

mainstream media, social media, and popular culture accurately portray them. We must challenge this perception by actively sharing and promoting positive stories of black fatherhood. Let's use our social media platforms to #CelebrateBlackDads and share the true narrative of black fatherhood with the world. Black fathers are here, caring for their children every single day It's time to challenge the negative stereotypes and acknowledge their essential role in shaping the lives of their families Together, we can change the narrative and foster a more accurate and inclusive representation of black fatherhood in the media and beyond

Welcome to the 26th Annual JuneteenthOhio Festival in Columbus Ohio the place where African American history is always being told. One hundred and fifty-seven years ago, our African American ancestors in Galveston Texas celebrated the first Juneteenth Festival in the nation.

General Gordan Granger read official order #3 to the remaining African American captives of Galveston Texas June 19th 1865 Two and a half years earlier President Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation January 1, 1863 supposedly freeing captives in the rebellious south. The celebratory act became the symbol of all people’s freedom day (African American were not free July 4,1776) June 19th became the date for the All People’s Freedom Day. Historical festival activi- ties included, family gatherings, enjoying great soul food, drinking red pop, singing spiritual hymns, dancing to the rhythms of the drums, story-telling for the children of the mighty Buffalo Soldiers or Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, John Brown, and black inventor stories.

Best regards!

Today Juneteenth is a National Holiday and continues to be celebrated in over 250 cities throughout the country Juneteenth has evolved into an annual gathering that gives 40 million African Americans a unified voice Juneteen- thOhio is the 3rd largest celebration in the country symbolizing among us Unity, selfdetermination, cooperative economics, collective work and responsibility, creativity, purpose and faith. Young people and families are indeed experiencing too much confusion and lacking culturaly competent knowledge to calm their storm. "Sounds of Blackness Releases Empowering Anthem 'WOKE' in Celebration of Juneteenth"

QuanHowell

The award-winning group Sounds of Blackness, known for their powerful music, has returned with a new social justice anthem called "WOKE." Following their NAACP Image Award nomination for "Time For Reparations," this song aims to resonate with audiences as we celebrate Juneteenth.

In today's cultural landscape, the term "Woke" has lost its true meaning, becoming diluted and misused in divisive culture wars.

However, its historical significance lies in its origin as an AfricanAmerican phrase, serving as an alert to the ongoing systems of racism and poverty established by colonizers centuries ago "WOKE," Sounds of Blackness seeks to reclaim and redefine the term The anthem serves as a powerful call to consciousness, urging listeners to remain vigilant and gain a profound understanding of the global history of hate and oppression. It demands a life free from the shackles of systemic discrimination and advocates for a future where such oppressive systems no longer exist.

The song features the soulful vocals of Sounds of Blackness, along with Quan Howell from Central Ohio

"WOKE" weaves together social justice themes, paying homage to iconic protest music that has shaped movements throughout history. Hope and Education: Spreading Awareness and Understanding of Sickle Cell Disease - One Family's Story

“Thank God, I have never been in a situation where I needed blood and it was not available. However, I have heard of occasions when blood transfusions were [postponed] due to a lack of blood donations.”

In addition to his own need for compatible blood units, Dandridge also has to consider the transfusion needs of his family. In 2007, while pregnant with their first child, his wife Omowunmi discovered she was a sickle cell trait carrier through prenatal testing

Though sickle cell trait carriers do not typically experience signs of sickle cell disease, they can pass the sickle cell gene on to their children

Due to the couple each having an abnormal hemoglobin S gene, their children would have a 50% chance of inheriting either sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait For the Dandridge family, all three of their children Skylar, David III and Donovan were born with sickle cell disease

(NAPSI) Nearly 100,000 people in the U S are affected with sickle cell disease maybe even someone you know yet there’s very little general awareness of the disease in part because it’s mostly not visible In addition, it affects each individual differently symptoms and complications of the disease range from tolerable to severe One Family’s Story

David Dandridge, Jr , was born with sickle cell disease but was not diagnosed until the age of two after suffering a pain crisis The most common genetic blood disorder in the U S , sickle cell disease can cause severe pain, tissue and organ damage, and even strokes. For patients battling the disease, regular blood transfusions are critical to managing extreme pain and life-threatening complications.

“Whenever I have received a blood transfusion, it was because it was a matter of life or death,” said Dandridge. “That is very scary to think about.”

When he was 18, the painful disease disrupted his dreams of joining the military and becoming a law enforcement officer, but he persevered past his

pain and successfully completed college at Morgan State University and later University of Phoenix. He also became a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., married his high school sweetheart and became a father.

ver the years, Dandridge received countless blood transfusions to treat pain, complications and multiple transient ischemic attacks (TIA), or mini strokes

Over the years, Dandridge received countless blood transfusions to treat pain, complications and multiple transient ischemic attacks (TIA), or mini strokes Frequent transfusions can make finding compatible blood types more difficult when patients develop an immune response against blood from donors that is not closely matched to the blood of the recipient Yet, 1 in 3 African American blood donors are a match for people with sickle cell disease making the need for blood donors who are Black critical to the ongoing care of sickle cell warriors such as Dandridge “[When] my body rejects blood from the transfusions, [it] caus[es] the need for more blood,” said Dandridge, who has type B positive blood.

Today, the Dandridge family know first-hand the importance of having access to a strong and diverse blood supply when they need it.

“My mind is always in overdrive [about the availability of blood] because sickle cell disease can impact the body of patients differently and at any time,” he said.

What You Can Do

Dandridge often encourages those who are eligible to schedule an appointment to donate blood and for those on the fence, he believes a picture is worth a thousand words

“I would show them pictures of my children as well as a picture of myself following the strokes and let them know that if it weren’t for [blood] donations, I and others like myself would possibly die Anyone who can give, please consider doing so You never know whose life you may be saving ”

How to Help

To schedule an appointment to give blood, visit RedCrossBlood org/OurBlood or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) As part of its Sickle Cell Initiative, the Red Cross is providing sickle cell trait screening on all blood donations from self-identified African American donors

The History of African-Americans in Baseball -The Columbus Clippers

African Americans have a long and rich history in Columbus professional baseball. Sixty years before Jackie Robinson broke the 20th century color barrier, J. Higgins caught, played third base and centerfield for the 1887 Columbus Senators in The Ohio State League There were a number of African Americans playing professional baseball that season but suddenly blacks disappeared from the professional ranks. Historians have many theories on why this occurred. Some believe it was due to Southerners coming north to play professionally. Others believe it was because of antislavery laws being passed at that time which made it illegal to sell human beings Baseball owners found it a very lucrative business to sell players to other clubs In 1887, Mike “King” Kelly was sold by the Chicago White Stockings to the Boston Beaneaters for an unprecedented sum of $10,000 Were teams worried about the repercussions if they sold a black ballplayer? Or was it the growing sentiment for separate but equal that was beginning to sweep the nation? Others historians believe it was simply racism

African-Americans formed their own teams and leagues in the late 19th century. Bud Fowler, the best African-American player in the 19th century, formed the Columbus Black Tourist team in 1900 The team traveled the country in style in a customized train car

In 1908 the Black Tourists joined the Colored Ohio State League which

featured teams from Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Springfield, Dayton and Xenia.

The Columbus Buckeyes were a member of the Negro National League in 1921 The team featured two future Hall of Famers, John Henry “Pop” Lloyd and Sol White

The Pirates’ Honus Wagner was once asked what he thought of Pop Lloyd being referred to by the press as “The Black Wagner” The legendary

from the Negro National League and young talented players that would still make their mark

In 1932 The Negro Southern League’s Louisville Black Caps transferred to Columbus and became the Turfs. Like all the previous Negro League teams the Turfs played their games at Neil Park onCleveland Avenue

laying off the name of Columbus Red Birds of the American Association. The Blue Birds finished in sixth place in ‘33 but had some memorable ball players

Player-manager Dizzy Dismukes was a college educated, submarine pitcher. After a long managerial career, he became secretary and personnel director of the Kansas City Monarchs until 1952 During this time, he was instrumental in the careers of Jackie Robinson, Cool Papa Bell, Buck O’Neil, Satchel Paige, Ernie Banks and Elston Howard and many more legendary players His career ended as a scout for the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox

shortstop replied that he was flattered by the comparison.

Connie Mack and Babe Ruth simply called Lloyd the greatest ball player they ever saw play the game

White was retired as a player and working as the Buckeyes’ traveling secretary when the team’s second baseman was injured during a road trip White filled in for twelve games and became the oldest player in Columbus history at the age of 54. White’s book, History of Colored Baseball, was the first book on the Negro Leagues

The Keystones were a strong independent Negro team from 1929-1930. The teams were a unique combination of veterans

In the 1930’s Columbus had two teams in the Negro National League; the Columbus Blue Birds in 1933 and the Columbus Elite Giants two years later The new Negro National League was formed in 1933 after the original league disbanded in 1931 The new circuit consisted of the Cole’s American Giants, the Pittsburgh Crawfords, the Baltimore Black Sox, the Nashville Elite Giants, the Detroit Stars, the Homestead Grays and the Columbus Bluebirds. The league was the brainchild of W J Peebles of Columbus, who became the owner of the Columbus franchise. Peebles named his club the Bluebirds

Ted Radcliffe was nicknamed Double Duty by the famous sports writer Damon Runyon when he saw Ted pitch the first game of a double header and catch the second game. Ted was one of the most colorful players in black baseball. He lived to the age of 103. Bill Byrd was one of the last pitchers to throw a legal spitter. He learned the pitch from teammate Roosevelt Davis while hurling for the 1933 Columbus Blue Birds Recruited to pitch for the Columbus Elite Giants for the 1935 season, he became the Giants’ ace for the next 16 seasons. Late in his career, Byrd’s young catcher Roy Campanella affectionately called Bill “Daddy”. The Elite Giants moved to Columbus from Nashville and finished with the third best record in the league behind the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the New York Cubans Three of the longest home runs in Cooper Stadium history were hit by Negro League stars Josh Gibson, "the Babe Ruth of the Negro Leagues", is the only man, that we can document, to hit a ball over the famous brick wall beyond the trees in left field

The Negro Leagues folded in 1960 but traveling teams continued to make stops in Columbus.

Every June, the United States pays homage to the rich and vibrant history of African American music during Black Music Month This annual celebration recognizes the immeasurable contributions of Black artists, musicians, and genres that have shaped the landscape of music around the world. From gospel to jazz, blues to hip-hop, R&B to rock and roll, Black music has transcended boundaries, touched hearts, and created a legacy that continues to resonate to this day

Black Music Month originated as a way to honor the remarkable achievements and cultural impact of African American musicians throughout history. It was first established in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, who recognized the importance of acknowledging the transformative power of Black music Since then, the month of June has become a time to reflect on the profound influence of Black artists and their significant contributions to the tapestry of American music.

This month-long celebration serves as a reminder of the diverse genres that have emerged from the African American experience, each with its distinct sound and historical significance. Gospel music, rooted in African American spiritual traditions, has not only inspired and uplifted communities but also laid the foundation for other genres to flourish Jazz, born in the African American communities of New Orleans, revolutionized the world of music with its improvisational spirit and infectious rhythms. The blues, with its soul-stirring melodies and heartfelt lyrics, became a powerful medium of self-expression and storytelling. And let's not forget the electrifying beats of rock and roll and the lyrical prowess of hip-hop, both of which owe their origins to Black musicians who broke down barriers and defied expectations

Black Music Month is not just a celebration of past achievements; it is also an opportunity to recognize the ongoing contributions of Black artists to the music industry. From iconic legends to emerging talents, Black musicians continue to shape the music landscape with their creativity, innovation, and unwavering dedication. They challenge conventions, push boundaries, and use their platforms to advocate for social change and justice

Moreover, Black music has transcended borders and reached audiences worldwide It has influenced countless musicians across different cultures and has been embraced by people of all backgrounds. Its universal appeal speaks to the power of music as a unifying force that can bridge divides and bring people together

As we celebrate Black Music Month, let us take a moment to appreciate the trailblazers who paved the way for future generations of Black artists. Let us recognize the indelible mark they have left on the world of music and the immeasurable impact they have had on our lives Let us also continue to support and uplift Black musicians, both established and emerging, by listening to their music, attending their concerts, and championing their artistic endeavors.

Black Music Month is a time to honor, celebrate, and amplify the extraordinary contributions of Black musicians throughout history It serves as a reminder of the power of music to transcend barriers, uplift spirits, and inspire change So, let us immerse ourselves in the rhythm and soul of Black music, appreciating its beauty, diversity, and lasting legacy.
