DR. LARRY E. RIVERS, PRESIDENT Four years ago, Dr. Larry E. Rivers returned to his alma mater as the eighth president of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) in the Middle Georgia community of Fort Valley. It was a place known more for its peaches and pecans than its historically black state university. The former Florida A & M University administrator and history professor tackled several challenges. Under the leadership of Dr. Rivers, FVSU is experiencing phenomenal growth. When fall classes began this year, more than 4,000 students enrolled. To accommodate the expanding student body, several construction projects have been completed including Phase III of the Wildcat Commons student housing village; a science classroom and laboratory building; a new football stadium; and an adjacent student amenities building that houses retail stores, a food court and more! FVSU now offers new graduate and undergraduate academic programs. Dr. Rivers credits energized leadership and a major reorganization for the institution’s growth. Born in the Philadelphia suburb of Sharon Hill, Dr. Rivers graduated from Fort Valley State College (now University) with a Bachelor of Science degree in social science education before pursuing a master’s degree in history at Villanova University. Carnegie-Mellon University awarded him a doctor of arts degree in history and curriculum development in 1977, and Goldsmith’s College of the University of London added a doctor of philosophy in history degree in 2002. For more than twenty years, Dr. Rivers taught history at Florida A & M University, ultimately receiving the rank of “distinguished university professor,” one of only two on campus. Meanwhile he held a series of administrative appointments leading to his selection in 2002 as dean of the FAMU College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Rivers’ Slavery in Florida, Territorial Days to Emancipation, published in 2000, garnered three national awards. He subsequently co-authored two additional volumes – Laborers in the Vineyard of the Lord: The Beginnings of the AME Church in Florida and For a Great and Grand Purpose: The Beginnings of the AMEZ Church in Florida – that have received scholarly acclaim. His teaching, research, publications, and community service have earned numerous citations for excellence. Ebony magazine featured Dr. Rivers as one of America’s future black leaders. Georgia Trend magazine named the president one of the “100 Most Influential Georgians” in 2008. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the Fort Valley State University Alumni Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Sigma Pi Phi (The Grand Boulé) Fraternity, the Urban League and Prince Hall Masonic Lodge. The father of sons Linje Eugene and Larry O., Rivers is married to the former Betty Jean Hubbard, a native of Dry Branch, Georgia.

DR. pERCY L. “CHICO” CALDWELL, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Prior to his arrival at Fort Valley State University, Dr. Caldwell served as consultant to the president and interim director of athletics at Miles College. In that capacity, his responsibilities included crafting a compliance system in response to recent NCAA sanctions; drafting and implementing a compliance manual and student handbook; and developing a business improvement plan for the college. Earlier in his career, as an administrator and coach at Miles, Caldwell led the basketball team to four consecutive conference championships, advancing to the NCAA Division III finals once. Prior to employment at Miles College, he spent eight years as the director of athletics at Winston-Salem State University. While there, he helped the Rams transition from the NCAA Division II level to NCAA Division I competition (Football Championship Subdivision in football) through a five-year reclassification program. Under Dr. Caldwell’s leadership and guidance, WSSU completed construction of a $5.1 million athletic field house, a $1.3 million track and field complex, and a tennis facility. Prior to his departure, construction began on a state-of-the-art softball complex, as well as a first-class football practice field. At Iowa Valley Community College District, Caldwell was the director of planning and development; and his 35-year background in collegiate athletics includes service as the athletic director and head basketball coach at West Virginia State College, head basketball coach at South Carolina State University and assistant basketball coach and physical education instructor at Livingston University. For steady leadership, a vision and commitment to excellence, the administrator was awarded West Virginia Conference Coach of the Year in 1990 and Athletic Director of the Year in 1989. He built program funding from $200,000 in 1987 to $500,000 in 1988 and increased it to more than $1.5 million while at WVSC. Caldwell also was named Coach of the Year in 1978 by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; Miles College Teacher of the Year in 1979 and its Most Outstanding Administrator in 1977. The Miles College graduate earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology/psychology, a master’s in health, physical education and recreation at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration at Iowa State University. He is married and the father of two children.

proud member of the The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) was founded in 1913 and today, 98 years later, the conference still flies high as one of the nation’s most viable forces in intercollegiate athletics. On December 30, 1913, representatives of the following institutions met at Morehouse College to consider the regulations of intercollegiate athletics among black colleges in the southeast: Alabama State University, Atlanta University, Clark College, Fisk University, Jackson College, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, Talladega College and Tuskegee Institute. The representatives formed a permanent organization (The Southeastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) which has had a continuous history to the present. In 1929, they changed the name of this organization to The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Two institutions have held continuous membership in the conference: Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) and Tuskegee University. Other institutions which have held membership are Alabama A&M University, Allen University, Benedict College, Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, Fisk University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, Knoxville College, Morris Brown College, Rust College, Savannah State University, South Carolina State University, Tennessee State University and Xavier University. The present membership is composed of thirteen different institutions in five states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee): Albany State University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Clark Atlanta University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Miles College, Morehouse College, Paine College, Stillman College and Tuskegee University. The SIAC also has a provisional member, Claflin University. The SIAC is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and participates at the Division II level. On an annual basis, the SIAC sponsors seven men’s championships (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, outdoor track & field and tennis) and six women’s championships (basketball, cross country, outdoor track & field, softball, tennis and volleyball). SIAC teams and its athletes are known for being staunch competitors and for excelling on the national level. The conference as a whole has claimed over 50 team and individual national championships. In 1978, Florida A&M became the first black college to win the NCAA Division I-AA National Football Championship when they defeat Massachusetts 35-28 in the finals. The SIAC also has over 300 former and current professional football players. Some retired NFL players who played in the SIAC: Hall of Famers John Stallworth of Alabama A&M, David “Deacon” Jones of South Carolina State and Larry Little of Bethune-Cookman. Other SIAC NFL greats include Rayfield Wright (Fort Valley State), Jack McClarien (Bethune Cookman), Bob Hayes (Florida A&M), Alfred Jenkins (Morris Brown), John Gilliam (South Carolina State) and Oliver Ross (Alabama A&M). Additionally, SIAC Athletes who went pro more recently include All-Pros Greg Lloyd who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers (Fort Valley State) and Shannon Sharpe of the Denver Broncos (Savannah State) as well as Anthony Abrams of the Washington Redskins (Clark Atlanta), Eddie Anderson of the Los Angeles Raiders (Fort Valley State), Howard Ballard of the Seattle Seahawks (Alabama A&M), Charles Evans of the Minnesota Vikings (Clark Atlanta), Dan Land of the Oakland Raiders (Albany State), Fred Lester of the New York Jets (Alabama A&M), Joe Patton of the Washington Redskins (Alabama A&M), Barry Wagner of the Indianapolis Colts (Alabama A&M), Tyrone Poole of the Carolina Panthers (Fort Valley) and Roosevelt Blackmon of the Green Bay Packers (Morris Brown). The SIAC is also home to football coaching legends, College Football Hall of Famer Alonzo Smith “Jake” Gaither and Cleveland Leigh “Major” Abbott. Gaither won 203 football games while only losing 36 and tying four. He guided Florida A&M to six black college national championships and his Rattlers won the SIAC Championship 22 of the 25 years he coached college football. Cleve Abbott coached all sports at Tuskegee in 1923, and he served there continuously from 1923 to 1955. He won eleven SIAC football championships and seven black college football national championships. Abbott had a total of six undefeated seasons, and his Tigers went 46 consecutive games without a loss in the mid 1920s. From 1936-56, Abbott’s track teams at Tuskegee participated in 36 national AAU championships and won 25. Two of the first four blacks selected to play in the NBA were from the SIAC. Some of the former stars who have enjoyed success in the NBA include the Jones brothers – Caldwell, Charles, Major and Wilbert of Albany State, Clemon Johnson of Florida A&M and Harold Ellis of Morehouse. On the coaching side the late Ed Adams coached at Tuskegee and during his 23-year span, he won 645 games and only lost 153 for an .811 winning percentage. Adams was a member of the 1934 Tuskegee team that won the first SIAC Basketball Tournament Championship and he was the first black basketball coach to win 500 games. Also, current Temple University Head Coach John Chaney is an SIAC alumnus. Chaney was one of the SIAC’s outstanding players in the late 1950s at Bethune-Cookman. The first black female to win a gold medal in any Olympic Sport, Alice Coachman, came from the SIAC. Coachman won an Olympic gold medal in the high jump at the 1948 Olympic Games in London with a jump of 5’6-1/8?. She also won the AAU high jump title for 10 consecutive years. Other SIAC Olympic Gold Medalists include Catherine Hardy of Fort Valley State (1st place in the 400 meter relay in 1952); Mildred McDaniel of Tuskegee (1st place in the high jump in 1956); Bob Hayes of Florida A&M (1st place in the 100 meter dash in 1964); Edwin Moses of Morehouse (1st place in the 400 meter hurdles in 1976 and 1984) who went 10 years without a loss in hurdle competition; Dannette Young (1st place in the 400 meter relay in 1988). The SIAC has also had an Olympic track coach at the 1992 games, Tuskegee University graduate Barbara Jacket. Another SIAC track and field standout is Evelyn Lawler. She is also a graduate of Tuskegee University and held an American record time in the 80m hurdles. Shed finished in 6th place at the Pan American Games. Lawler’s other claim to fame lies with her offspring. Lawler is the mother of Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. In 1957, Althea Gibson of Florida A&M became the first black to win the singles title at Wimbledon, and she is a member of the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame. The SIAC also has had its share of success on the baseball diamond, which includes a World Series MVP. Donn Clendenon of Morehouse was the MVP of the 1969 World Series when he played with the New York Mets. Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs and Vince Coleman of the St. Louis Cardinals played at Florida A&M. Other A&M Rattlers that made it to the big show include Greg Coleman and Bill Lucas. After concluding his major league baseball career, Lucas became the first black general manager in baseball with the Atlanta Braves in 1978. A banner year for the SIAC was 1993 when member institutions competed for NCAA Division II Championships in eight different sports. In football, Albany State went 11-0 during the regular season and made its first trip to the playoffs; Alabama A&M’s men and women competed in the Indoor Track and Field Championships and both finished in the top five. In men’s basketball, Alabama A&M made a national playoff appearance as did Fort Valley State’s women’s squad. Alabama A&M’s men’s cross country team won the southeastern regional title and finished eighth at the nationals. At the Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Alabama A&M’s men finished 10th and the women claimed their second consecutive national title. The SIAC is also home to both the longest running rivalry and the winningest team in black college football. Morehouse and Tuskegee have been doing battle since 1902 and will hit the field for the 99th time in the 2008 season. Tuskegee will be celebrating its 115th season this fall and they have amassed over 600 victories – first among Historically Black Colleges and Universities All SIAC member institutions have a rich athletic history. They rely heavily on past leadership to help them face today’s challenges as they continue their quest to

excel in collegiate athletics.

2010 FVSU WILDCATS “SOLD OUT” As the 2010 college football season approaches, patience is the one word that least describes the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU). After last year’s 7-4 finish under then first-year head coach Donald Pittman, the Wildcats are about as eager as a cat in a fish market to start this year’s gridiron campaign. The impatience of the Wildcats stems largely from the belief that by the end of last year’s season the players had finally gotten a firm grasp on the new offensive and defensive schemes introduced by the new coaching staff. In reflecting on last season, the coaches and players know that the only difference between their finishing mark of 7-4 and an even better record was the growing pains associated with learning and implementing the new systems. With those pains now out of the way, confidence is abound in the FVSU Football Program that 2010 will be a year of destiny for the Wildcats. In fact, that belief in destiny is so strong that it has formed the theme for this year’s campaign. The 2010 destination for Wildcats Football is Florence, Alabama! Florence is home to the 2010 NCAA Division II Football National Championship and the Wildcats have pinpointed the city as their final destination in this year’s journey. As evidenced by spring practice tshirts and placards adorning the FVSU campus, coaches and players have embraced the theme, “FVSU Football; Florence, Sold Out!” With the players and coaches selling out to the theme, perhaps the most important question remaining is who will be the key players to help navigate the championship journey? Fortunately for the Wildcats, there are several players who will help with the steering. OFFENSE Offensively, FVSU was the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) leader in total offense last year. Averaging 349 yards per game and 29.6 points per outing, the Wildcats proved extremely entertaining to watch last season. Ranked number one in the SIAC in pass efficiency (229 yards per game), passing will be an integral part of the offense in 2010. With last year’s quarterback Nathaniel Samas now among the ranks of the FVSU alumni, the quarterback situation for the Wildcats is left wide open for the 2010 season. With several players vying for the position, sophomore Nicholas Stephens is the leading candidate. The Los Angeles, CA native took most of the snaps in pre-season and will look to carry his preseason success into the 2010 campaign.

2010 FVSU WILDCATS “SOLD OUT” While Stephens will have a variety of targets to choose from when passing this season, one of his primaries will be senior wide receiver An’thon Harris. As one of three Wildcats to earn first-team all-conference honors last year, Harris was honored as a receiver and punt return specialist. He finished fifth in the SIAC last year in receptions per game (3.4) with a total of 37 catches for 566 yards. He averaged 15 yards per catch with seven touchdowns and he led the SIAC in punt returns averaging 13.2 yards per return. Receiver Demario Barber will also offer a down-field target for FVSU. Last season Barber had 20 receptions for 417 yards with two touchdowns. He averaged over 20 yards per catch. When FVSU runs the ball they will be looking for a replacement for last year’s workhorse Richard Willis; now an assistant coach at FVSU. With the return of Denzel Wesley and Brandon Anderson, this duo is expected to shoulder most of the carries this season. While Wesley sat out last season, Anderson finished with 263 yards on 64 carries. DEFENSE The Wildcats finished third in total defense in the SIAC last year yielding 274 yard per game. With most of the defensive unit returning this season, expect the yards per game average to significantly decrease this year. Jason Thompson will anchor a burly defensive line while defensive end Narada Williams is expected to apply collapsing pressure from the corner. Thompson had 38 tackles, 8.5 tackles for losses, four sacks, and one interception last year. Williams finished with 22 tackles (6.5 tackles for losses) and four quarterback sacks. . At the second level of the Wildcats defense, linebacker Ricky Johnson will provide the intensity which characterized FVSU last season. Johnson finished 11th in the SIAC in tackles last year with 71. He averaged 6.5 tackles per game and had 1.5 sacks. If there is one area of the Wildcat defense that should cause considerable concern for the opposition it’s the secondary. With the entire secondary returning, all-conference defender Dajuan Williams highlights a very talented unit. Williams, a sophomore, won dual SIAC honors as a freshman. He was named second-team all-conference and freshman of the year. Williams led the SIAC in interceptions with six including an individual, single game career high of three in the Fountain City Classic.

2010 FVSU WILDCATS “SOLD OUT” In addition to Williams, Darnell Burks will contribute to the prowess of the FVSU defense. Burks had 59 tackles last season. SPECIAL TEAMS In addition to Harris’ ability as a punt return specialist, the FVSU special teams’ effort will be buffeted by the return of first-team all-conference punter Marquette King. King ranked third in the conference last season in punting with a 39 yards per punt average. Of his 61 punts, 22 landed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line; six were for 50 yards or more, and none were blocked. King was named SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week five times in 2009. Sophomore place kicker Justin Rosenbaum is also expected to build on his freshman performance. Last season he converted 10 field goals and made 32 of 35 extra point attempts. As the Wildcats prepare for the 2010 football journey, these are some of the players who will help ensure that the destination of Florence, Alabama is reached.

Donald pittman, head coach Prior to his arrival at Fort Valley State University (FVSU) last season, Pittman spent the previous seven years as offensive coordinator for the Golden Rams of Albany State University (ASU). During his tenure at ASU, Pittmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offensive philosophy helped lead ASU to four Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Football Titles and five appearances in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Playoffs. Each year, under his leadership, the Golden Ram offense was consistently ranked among the best in the SIAC in every offensive category. In December of 2008, Pittman was named Head Coach of FVSU Football. With his appointment, he became the 13th head coach in the history of FVSU Football. In his first season as head coach, he led the Wildcats to a 7-4 record including a win in the Fountain City Classic against ASU. In addition to his impact on the success of the ASU football program, Pittman brings a wealth of coaching experience to FVSU from various levels. At the collegiate level, prior to his stint at ASU, he spent two years as offensive coordinator at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Before that, he spent a total of 18 years with Texas A&M University (Kingsville). For the first 15 years he served as running backs coach and in his last three seasons he was the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offensive coordinator. Pittman is a 1974 graduate of Adams State University and he received his masters in counseling from Texas A&M University. He is married to the former Rhonda Hughes from Corpus Christi, Texas.

fvsu assistant coaches HASKEL BUFF DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/SPECIAL TEAMS Defensive Coordinator Haskell Buff held the same position at Texas A&MKingsville for seven years before moving to Mt. San Antonio College as associate head coach and linebackers coach. A dean’s list student at Southern Utah, Buff also played at Tulsa and coached at University of Nevada Las Vegas for three seasons, as well as Texas Southern and West Texas A&M. Under Buff’s direction, Texas A&M Kingsville had a top 20 defense on multiple occasions. Buff was a finalist in 2005 and 2006 for the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year Award (Division II).

KEITHEN DEGRATE OFFENSIVE LINE/ASSISTANT HEAD COACH DeGrate played professional football in the World League with the San Antonio Raiders for two seasons and in the Arena Football League with the San Antonio Force, Cincinnati Rockers, and the Miami Hooters. DeGrate received his bachelors degree in sociology in 1996 and a masters degree in counseling in 1998.

FRANK TURNER DEFENSIVE LINE Coach Franklin Turner is a graduate of Albany State University and received a bachelor’s degree in mass communications. As a football player for Albany State, Coach Turner was a two-year starter. In 2005 he was named to the All-SIAC Team (1st Team); Black College All American (1st Team); and D2 All American Honorable Mention.

fvsu assistant coaches TERRY JONES DEFENSIVE LINE/RECRUITING COORDINATOR Terry Jones has a professional collegiate coaching career that spans over 24 years. Prior to his arrival at Fort Valley State University, he spent two years as defensive line and special teams coach at Northeastern State University. From 1994-2005, he was defensive line coach at Florida A&M University. During that period, Florida A&M University had 86 wins, seven consecutive play-off appearances, and five MEAC Championships. Before that, he was defensive line coach at Central State University for four years. The Marauders posted 39 wins, four play-off appearances, two national championships and two National Black Championships. From 1982 to 1990 he served as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for the University of Central Oklahoma. Jones is a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma with a bachelor of science in secondary education. On October 15, 2010, Jones will be inducted into the University of Central Oklahoma Athletics Hall of Fame. DURWOOD ROQUEMORE SECONDARY Durwood Roquemore is a former NFL cornerback with the National Football League. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round of the 1982 draft. After two seasons he became a member of the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League. After a one-year hiatus, he returned to the professional ranks as a member of the Chicago Bruisers of the Arena Football League (AFL) and in 1987 became a member of the Buffalo Bills. He returned to the Bruisers in 1988. In 1990, Roquemore played for the Albany Firebirds of the AFL. In 1991, he joined the Orlando Predators where he solidified his place in AFL history as one of the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best players. Upon retiring from the Predators, Roquemore was elected to the Arena Football League Hall of Fame. Coach Roquemore began his coaching career as defensive coordinator for the Albany Firebirds and held a similar position with the Houston Thunderbirds in 1998 and 1999. He served as head coach of the Richmond Speed from 1999-2000.

fvsu assistant coaches GLENN HOLMES QUARTERBACKS Coach Holmes is a Jacksonville, Florida native with over 20 years of teaching and coaching experience on the collegiate and high school levels. He has served as FVSU’s quarterbacks coach since 2006. From 2005-06 he was specials teams and running backs coach at Clark Atlanta University. The previous two seasons he was the running backs coach at Morris Brown College and the assistant baseball coach. Coach Holmes coached at the high school level from 1988 to 2002. While at Lincoln High in Dallas Texas, he was assistant football coach and head baseball coach. Prior to that, he coached the defensive backs at the University of North Texas from 1984 to 1988. Each year from 2002 to the present, he has attended a coaching camp or clinic offered by an NFL franchise. IVY WILLIAMS WIDE RECEIVERS Coach Williams began his career as a graduate assistant at Xavier University (Ohio). As a student-athlete at Xavier, Williams was a three-year letterman who was named to the school’s famed “Legion of Honor.” His first full-time coaching job was at Middletown High School (Ohio). After Middletown, he joined the coaching staff of Marshall University where he served as running backs coach from 1974 to 75. With over 30 years in the coaching profession, his career includes coaching jobs at Kansas State University (1975-77); New Mexico State (1978); University of Kansas (1979-81); Arizona State University (1982-84); The Detroit Lions (1985-86); University of Akron (1987-88); and Texas Tech (1989-93).

RICHARD WILLIS RUNNING BACKS After a successful collegiate career as a running back at FVSU, Coach Willis begins his first assignment as a coach at his alma mater. Last season, Willis was the Wildcats leading rusher with 625 yards on 53 carries. He the season finished the season with seven touchdowns and 981 yards of total offense.
