A REFLECTION ON 2016 was a year of growth and change that made us stronger as an organization. We strive to take the biblical meaning of loving neighbor and self and apply this to ourselves and our work each day.

Urban Homeworks is proud to build a platform with our neighbors; a platform upon which we can stand and make a path toward a more equitable future, and where the positive presence of justice prevails. This goes beyond the absence of conflict and embraces a vision where the world is as it ought to be—for all people.

We’ll level with you: the work is not easy. The Twin Cities has one of the largest gaps in homeownership nationally between white people and people of color at 37%. Studies show that access to affordable housing needs to at least triple to keep up with stagnant incomes and the increasing cost of living. Then once a family has a home, so many other things can follow— fulfilling employment, better health, community ties, and someday an end to systems that separate us; an end to “affluenza” in the face of scarcity.

The work we undertook in 2016 must continue because we have a long-term goal to work toward: catalyze 100 change agents from the creation of 1,000 homes by 2026. Think of what the world could look like—more children growing up in pursuit of their passions; more people living out their life’s calling; more people reaching out to help one another.

So, we ask you to think about the work that needs to be done as you look at what was accomplished in 2016. We need you to be a change agent so that we can effectively live into this positive presence of justice across our neighborhoods and our state.

Thank you for partnering with Urban Homeworks—for joining us in this movement toward the positive presence of justice. We ask you to continue to be our neighbor in 2017 by staying involved, letting your voice be heard and by being a champion for dignity and justice in our communities. If we refuse to be okay with inequality, then we can change it. One day at a time, one neighbor at a time, one you and one me at a time.

we’ve focused on creating housing for people who would otherwise be without. As many living in Minneapolis and St. Paul face displacement due to absentee landlords, a rising cost of living with stagnant wages and skyrocketing real estate prices, Urban Homeworks is committed to making our communities better. Over the years we’ve sharpened our focus to see that to effect lasting, positive change, it goes beyond places and houses - it is about people; powerful people in stable, solid places. We collaborate within our community to be the most effective tool we can be in building toward change. Together, we are confronting the effects of an economic system that doesn’t work for many of our citizens and responding by building the most equitable, just, and dignified alternatives as we can. Urban Homeworks is not “the hope.” “The Hope” is out there, on the street, in the neighborhood -- we are a tool in its hand. To be the best tool we can be, we do whatever we can to stay close and responsive. We do whatever we can to be a constructive force in building strong platforms for hope-filled agents of change to thrive.

In 2016 Urban Homeworks completed one energy efficient home and sold two more. These are a part of the Green Homes North program in Minneapolis working toward building 100 energy efficient homes in our neighborhood. With high efficiency in appliances, lighting, exterior and more, these homes conform to strict standards set by the State of Minnesota. Urban Homeworks is participating in the program because we also want to revitalize neighborhoods. These are homes that are efficient for people to operate, fill vacant city lots, and bring additional stability and household income into our community.

Benny & Jaralyn In June of 2016, Benny, Jaralyn, and their little girl joined the Urban Neighbor program. Through other members of their North Minneapolis church, they had heard about the program and felt called to move from Bloomington to North. Amongst the demands of parenting, working full time, and being involved in their church, they are committed to the Urban Neighbor program because it aligns with their family values. They’ve been Urban Neighbors for over a year now and remark that you can get a lot out of the program when you put forth the effort and take advantage of the opportunities to grow and learn.

A highlight of the UN Program for Benny and Jaralyn are the relationships and friendships between neighbors. But even Urban Neighbors have to face negative ideas about North Minneapolis.

As Jaralyn puts it, “At first, I fought the idea of moving to North Minneapolis even though I knew God was calling us there. It is easy to begin to buy into the narrative the media portrays about North Minneapolis without even realizing it.”

The program has helped them learn that North’s true identity is not what has been covered in the news. As she says, “we’ve discovered many gems and beauty in a place that is often demonized by the media. We have fallen in love with North Minneapolis and plan on staying and being a part of the change in the community.”

Urban Homeworks is grateful for the time & commitment of Urban Neighbors. We are honored to learn alongside them as we all work toward lasting change together.

Urban Homeworks and our faithful Quicksilver volunteers said farewell this January to a friend and great man, Rodger Anderson. He was a gift to us as both a Quicksilver volunteer and supporter of the mission of Urban Homeworks, and he will be missed.

At his memorial service a passage from Romans 5 was shared: We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. Romans 5:3-5 (NLT)

Rodger was a mentor to many in his professional and personal life, and he lived out in front of others a “hope that will not lead to disappointment.� Even in his passing, this hope continued. We were truly humbled when a few weeks after his memorial service, his wife Janet came to the office with an envelope of checks from friends and family who gave to Urban Homeworks in his name.

Also an honor, yet a bittersweet one; she came to return the Urban Homeworks Carhartt vest he received from UHW, that he wore on the days he worked as a volunteer, to perhaps pass on to someone who will continue the work he started.

Please keep his wife Janet and their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in your prayers.

John Corlett Christ-like compassion, selflessness, and dependability. This is how John Corlett’s pastor described him when asked, and Urban Homeworks agrees. John has been a volunteer leader at TRUST, a network of South Minneapolis churches, since 2003. Thanks to John’s coordinating the group TRUST Builders has volunteered with UHW nearly every month since 2009 because, as he says, “[we’re] just a bunch of good hearted people who wanted to be helpful…

Next thing we knew, we signed up for a Saturday every month.”

In 2016 alone, he coordinated the creation and pick-up of Thanksgiving baskets for 64 families.

In the last seven years TRUST Builders has done approximately 14 build days/year, with 20 volunteers at a time, totaling 1,960 people.

When asked what keeps him coming back, he said: “Think how improbable this is. Volunteers from six churches (four denominations), who didn’t know each other before we started and rarely see each other between workdays.

We never know who or what skills will show up. But once we are on site, the tasks get divided up, we work hard, have fun and get a lot done. How could I pass up seeing that miracle every month?”

John is deeply involved in his church, St. John’s Episcopal. His wife Mary is the head of the Community Life group and a leader in contemplative ministries and the choir.

Every autumn, John volunteers contributed works with his church to create Thanksgiving Baskets that are

delivered to UHW families.

He’s even hosted up to three tables at a time for our annual Perpetuate the Hope fundraiser.

The TRUST Builders have had days where volunteering was especially hard—both with weather and in the work they’re asked to do.

But, as he says, it must get done before a family has a roof over their heads.

Charles Six years ago, Charles and his sons moved into an Urban Homeworks house. His housing and additional connections have catalyzed his work and passions as a change agent and leader both at Urban Homeworks and in the larger community. Charles has started two nonprofits committed to empowering men and boys to rise up like him. He leads outreach campaigns for families, giving away backpacks for school and turkeys for the holidays. He describes himself as a father for all children in his neighborhood (just a few blocks away from the Urban Homeworks office), because he wants his boys to surround themselves with other children who also feel safe, happy, and creative.

He hosted his Stop Youth Violence event for the community again in June of 2017, continuing a years-long tradition of a successful and positive time to engage with local kids. He’s now expanded it to become a year-round campaign to continue to provide creative alternatives for youth.

When asked how to explain his life’s work, Charles describes himself and a beacon of hope and a leader in the community. Urban Homeworks is proud to partner with Charles and so many others to create the platform to do these great things in our community. Charles and so many other residents are rising up on the POD Council, neighborhood boards, in schools, and so much more. They are the change agents doing the radical, tireless work of fighting for equity and stability.

Haulin’ it home 2016 marked the 10th year that Urban Homeworks held Haulin’ it Home, our annual grain drive. It all started in 2006 when Chad Schwitters, Executive Director, returned to his hometown in Clara City and spoke with his local parish. The first bushel of corn was donated by members of Bunde Christian Reformed Church, and ever since it’s been a UHW tradition to weave Greater MN in a little more tightly to the Metro.

Last year we raised more than $74,000 during Haulin’ it Home through truckloads of corn and beans, as well as a cash donation of $2,000. The truck we used to haul grain was once again donated by Penske. The past 10 years of donations through Haulin’ it Home has resulted in more than $800,000 toward supporting our work.

perpetuate the hope Our annual Perpetuate the Hope Luncheon was held on September 29th, 2016 at The Depot in downtown Minneapolis. We heard moving stories from David Morris and Tira Smith, and a powerful message from Pat Ryan to David. Chad punctuated the event with a call for all of us to work toward the positive presence of justice, and asked our community to look inward at what it means to us.

Urban Homeworks raised $158,000 in donations at the event. We had $137,000 in sponsorships at that time, and afterward we received an additional $75,000 in sponsorships and stock contributions. 89 tables were filled with 715 hearts and minds ready to hear our mission.
