Course Summary

Lesson One:
What’s Trending – A Life of Purpose (Genesis 1:26–31)
In this lesson, students learn they were created in God’s image. Just as Adam was created for a specific purpose, each student has a specific role in God’s world. Students will learn that they were born with value and purpose for God’s good will as they seek to care of His beautiful world.
Lesson Two:
What’s Trending – Integrity Brings Blessings (Daniel 1:8–15)
In this lesson, students learn the importance of living in obedience to God’s Word even when they are in situations completely different than anything they’ve ever known. The temptation to sin may come from any number of sources, but students will learn that, like Daniel, they have the strength to say “no,” especially when anything comes against God’s commands.
Lesson Three:
What’s Trending – Prayer Makes a Difference (2 Chronicles 14:8–13)
In this lesson, students learn that amazing things happen when they choose to pray. Instead of taking matters into their own hands or resorting to violence, prayer should be their first line of defense. Even though King Asa’s army was far outnumbered by Zerah’s forces, Asa trusted in the Lord. His dependence on God resulted in a miraculous victory over his enemy. King Asa’s example of prayer will give every student something to imitate.
Lesson Four:
What’s Trending – Courage Stands Up (Esther 4:9–16)
In this lesson, students learn about how Queen Esther found the courage to approach the king. She asked for help even though doing so could have resulted in the loss of her life. Students will learn to be like Esther and exercise faith to know they will receive the power of God to give them courage. Their bravery is evident when they ask God and put all their trust in Him.
Lesson Five:
What’s Trending – Moved to Action (Jeremiah 38:6–13)
In this lesson, students will realize that, as Christians, they must do more than feel sorry for those who are less fortunate. Just as Ebed-Melek was moved to get Jeremiah out of a muddy pit, true compassion should inspire them to do something to address the problems they see in their community and world.
Course Summary

Lesson Six:
What’s Trending – A Witness of Jesus (John 1:29–37)
In this lesson, students will learn the importance of following the example of John the Baptist. Even though others were confused about his identity, John the Baptist never lost sight of who he was. He knew that he was a messenger of God who was sent to tell the world about Jesus. Students will see that they can spread the same message about Jesus in the world and stand up for what they believe.
Lesson Seven:
What’s Trending – Forgiven Completely (Luke 22:54–62)
In this lesson, students learn about how they can be forgiven completely just like Peter, a passionate disciple and a faithful follower of Jesus. When given the opportunity to openly acknowledge his relationship with Jesus, Peter repeatedly denied knowing Jesus. Rather than condemn or punish Peter, Jesus forgave him. Students will learn that forgiveness is not reserved for those who behave the best rather forgiveness is for everyone who seeks it from God.
Lesson Eight:
What’s Trending – Service Counts (Luke 23:18–26)
In this lesson, students learn that service for others counts with God. Simon of Cyrene wasn’t only at the right place at the right time, he was also willing to serve. He didn’t realize the importance of his simple act of carrying the Cross of Jesus. As students go through this lesson, they will be challenged to make themselves available to serve others in the name of Jesus and for the cause of Christ.
Lesson Nine:
What’s Trending – Loyalty Matters (John 20:11–18)
In this lesson, students learn how their loyalty to Jesus matters. This lesson features Mary Magdalene who was distraught at the disappearance of Jesus’ body. She didn’t recognize Him when He stood a few feet away from her. It wasn’t until He said her name that she recognized His voice. Students will learn that loyalty to Jesus has benefits far beyond anything they could ever imagine.
Lesson Ten:
What’s Trending – Knowledge Has Power (Acts 8:27–38)
In this lesson, students will witness the Ethiopian eunuch as he struggles to understand the Bible. As a result of his diligence, he gained a deeper understanding of the Bible when God sent Philip to help him. If the eunuch had given up, he may have missed his blessing. Students will be encouraged to follow the example of diligence and continue studying the Word of God. The conclusion of the lessons doesn’t have to mean the end of their Bible study.

The Jesus Connection Games
THE JESUS CONNECTION GAME
To test your students’ knowledge of the lessons in this year’s course, you can play this quiz game in a variety of ways:
• Separate students into two teams. Alternate questions between teams. If a team misses the question, the other team gets a chance to answer the question and earn the points.
• Have students play against each other. The one with the most points at the end of the game wins.
• Add a twist by telling students that if they miss the question they raise their hand to answer, they will lose the same point value as the question.
• Get buzzers, noise makers, or other gadgets for students or teams to “ring in.”
• Make a “Jeopardy” style board on poster board or a chalkboard; allow students to choose which question they want (example: Lesson 1 for 50 points).
• If your church has a 5-day program, use the questions from the extra lessons as bonus, tie breaker, or “daily double” questions.
• Give prizes, such as snacks, money, or extra craft projects.

Notes
Teen Lesson 1

Teacher: “If we believe we are made in God’s image, we should be proud of our likeness, regardless of our appearance.” (You may also want to discuss the difference between dressing appropriately and dressing to gain or maintain an image.)
What’s Trending A Life of Purpose
Have students take turns reading through the Bible passage. Afterwards ask them to give you the 5W’s and H (Who? What? When? Why? Where? How?) of the passage. Use your Bible background as needed.
Genesis 1:26–31, NIV—Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning— the sixth day.
Key Word for the Day
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27, NIV)
Before class print the memory verse on several sheets of paper. Cut out the words and fold all papers before placing them in a cup. Have each student pull out a word. When every student has received a word, they should try to arrange themselves in the correct order.
Step 4: Scrolling

Action Time
Teacher: “What would you say if I told you I firmly believe that all work is both a responsibility and a privilege?” (Try to encourage the class’ comments. Don’t be surprised if you get negative comments regarding work.)
Teacher: “Are there any other means of survival than work? If so, what are they?” (Allow time for students to respond.)
Teacher: “Do you realize that cities and nations were built through hard work? Work is the only means of reaching certain goals. If you want something in life, you have to work for it. Work is a responsibility because we are stewards of God’s creation. Work is a privilege because we are endowed with mental and physical abilities unlike and superior to all other forms of life. The human body has hands, feet, muscles, brain, etc., that, when coordinated, can accomplish some pretty amazing things. We can have dominion (power) as God has planned it.”
Teacher: “Why are you here? What is your God-given purpose? How can you go about fulfilling your purpose?” (Allow time for discussion.)
Teacher: “It’s never too early to make plans to continue your education after high school. Think about the things you enjoy doing and the things you do well. You can easily combine your interests and talents to fulfill your purposes.” (Allow time for discussion.)

(Review and Closing)
Worship Time
Remind students that it is especially important for them to remember that they are made in God’s image and have a purpose in life. They must accept God’s call not only for their own good, but for the good of all Creation. God has given them the creativity and the intelligence to help them complete their tasks and to make a difference in the world. They can become inventors, artists, singers, writers–the options are unlimited. When they use their God-given talents, they glorify God and prove themselves to be effective stewards. Use the Jesus Connection Songbook and downloadable music.
Clean-Up
This is a good time to begin the groundwork for teaching skills of neatness and cooperation. Tell the students that they can be God’s helpers.
Closing

should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”
11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”
14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.
Key Word for the Day
“Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine” (from Daniel 1:8, NIV).
Have students find a partner. They will work together to write the memory verse, including punctuation and the verse reference, on index cards. Only one word should be on each card. Punctuation should appear with the word it follows. After the words have been written, they should shuffle the cards.
To prepare for the game, they will turn the cards face down. Then they will play a type of “Memory game.” However, instead of looking for matching words, they are trying to find the words to the Scripture in the proper order.
Players will take turns turning over two cards at a time. When a match is made, that player can take another turn.

1: Signing On
(Background Research and Preparation for Lesson)
Scripture Study: 2 Chronicles 14:8–13
Lesson Focus: God hears and answers our prayers.
Suggested Materials: Teen Student Folders, UMI Craft Booklet, Application Posters, pens, paper, extra Bibles.
Bible Background
Asa was a good king. He abolished idolatry and destroyed idolatrous altars and images. He hoped his actions would reform the idolaters. King Asa also revived and established the practice of worshipping God. Since Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord, God granted him a long reign. For ten years, Judah had no wars. Asa realized the rest they enjoyed was a gift from God. During these years of rest, they were able to build and also prepare for war.
King Zerah from Ethiopia had human might and power on his side. He led an army of thousands of soldiers and 300 chariots. He was foolish enough to think that he could fight King Asa’s men and win, but King Asa petitioned God for help. The king’s prayer was, “Do not let mere mortals prevail against you” (2 Chronicles 14:11). A wise man puts his trust in God, foolish men depend on armies and weapons. King Zerah and his men were defeated because God answered King Asa’s prayer. God honors those who obey His commands instead of imitating others and greedily trying to get riches and lands.
Step 2: Updating
(Opening and Preparing for the Lesson)
Opening Activity
Teacher: “How do you feel when you hear about violence affecting innocent victims? Have you ever felt defenseless against gang members and others in society who battle with worldly weapons such as money, power, guns, etc.”
Teacher: “It’s important to remember that God is our weapon. King Asa prayed, ‘Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty.’ No matter how bad things seem, God is ready to assist us when we go to Him in prayer.”

I Can Pray
Shayna walked down the hallway that led from the dining room to the living room. She sighed. She was buried so deep in thought that she didn’t realize how her mother and brother, Ralph, were watching her closely.
“How long has she been like this?” asked Mom as she put down her laptop.
“Since we texted to let you know we made it home safely,” said Ralph.
“So, she’s been pacing the floor for nearly two hours?” asked Mom.
Ralph nodded, “She didn’t even stop to eat dinner.”
“Did anything happen?” asked Mom.
“Yes,” said Ralph, “she received a phone call.”
Mom sighed and patted him on the back. After watching Shayna for a few minutes, Mom had to intervene. She walked into Shayna’s path to get her attention.
“Whoa,” said Shayna, “I didn’t see you.”
“Let’s chat…is everything okay?” asked Mom.
“Not yet,” said Shayna, “but it will be.”
“I don’t understand,” said Mom.
“Irene’s grandmother was rushed to the hospital; she’d just had a stroke. You always say that prayer should be our first response, so I’ve been praying ever since.”

army of thousands upon thousands and three hundred chariots, and came as far as Mareshah.
10 Asa went out to meet him, and they took up battle positions in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.
11 Then Asa called to the LORD his God and said, “LORD, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. LORD, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against you.”
12 The LORD struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled, 13 and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. Such a great number of Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were crushed before the LORD and his forces. The men of Judah carried off a large amount of plunder.
Key Word for the Day
“LORD, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, LORD our God for we rely on you...” (from 2 Chronicles 14:11b, NIV).
Divide the memory verse into small two- to four- word phrases. Write each phrase on a sheet of paper and tape the papers on different students’ backs. They are not allowed to see their phrase, but everyone else can. Students will try to arrange themselves in the correct order, but they are not allowed to speak to each other.

Teacher: “God wants you to come to Him with your troubles. He is concerned about your personal problems, and He wants you to be concerned enough about the needs of others to pray for them. Pray for those in authority over you. Pray for greedy people. Pray about gang pressures and members. Remember God loves them, too. Don’t forget to thank God for all that He’s done for you and to praise Him because He’s worthy to be praised. As you learn to pray about everything, you too will win against great odds.”
Teacher: “Make a prayer list of people and concerns that you will pray over this week. Writing our prayers is a
good way to remember what we’ve prayed about. Plus, it gives us a record to refer to when the prayer is answered.” (Make sure students have paper and pens. Give them time to write their concerns.)

Answers will vary. Possible answers are listed below.
1. Why did Zerah feel he could go against the city of Judah? He didn’t believe in God. He thought they weren’t protected. He had a much larger army.
2. How did King Asa win the war against such great odds? They trusted in the Lord. God delivered them. They allowed the Lord to fight for them.
3. Think about the things you pray about most: Are they for yourself? Your family? Those in your community? Those in leadership positions? Why do you think you pray about those things or people more than anything else? I mainly pray for my family. I think I pray for my family more than anything else because we have a lot of problems right now.

Scripture Study: Esther 4:9–16
Lesson Focus: God causes us to be people of courage.
Suggested Materials: Teen Student Folders, UMI Craft Booklet, Application Posters, pens, paper, extra Bibles.
Bible Background
The king of Persia gave an extravagant feast because he wanted to show the riches of his glorious kingdom. King Xerxes, also known as Ahasuerus, entertained the men in the banquet hall and the gardens while Queen Vashti hosted a feast for the women in her own section of the royal house. The celebration went on for days.
As the celebration ended, King Xerxes asked Queen Vashti to come into his presence. He wanted to show off her beauty. She refused to go, and he became very angry. After meeting with his counselors, the king decided to ban Vashti from his presence forever and to give her position as queen to someone else.
Now that the king was without a wife, the princes searched all the provinces of the kingdom for young virgins to replace Vashti. Esther excelled above them all. The king chose her and married her. Since Esther was of Jewish descent, it was highly improbable that she should have become the queen.
Mordecai, Esther’s cousin, was an official in the king’s court. He had raised Esther as his own daughter because she was an orphan. While serving in the king’s court, Mordecai discovered a plot against the king’s life. He reported the plotters, and they were hanged. This event was recorded in the king’s journal.
A man named Haman became the king’s favorite prince. Because Mordecai would not give Haman the honor he demanded, Haman plotted revenge and caused an edict to be issued. The edict called for the death of all the Jews, and Haman planned to hang Mordecai. Esther dared to risk her life and the rejection of the king to bring about a deliverance of her people. She called a fast—not eating or drinking—for three days and nights. When it was time to approach the queen, she told her people, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16b). Though Es-
ther was a beautiful woman, she is mainly remembered for her courage.
When she went in to see the king, he held out his scepter. This was a sign that she had found favor in his sight. Esther’s prayers were answered. Her people were saved, and Haman was hanged instead of Mordecai.

Teacher: “The Bible mentions people in the Old Testament, such as Abraham, Deborah, Gideon, and Moses, who cared enough about oppressed people to help them. These people were used by God and risked their lives to save others. In the New Testament, John, Peter, and Paul did the same to put their lives on the line to preach the Gospel of Christ.”
Teacher: “Would you dare to risk your life to save others? If so, under what circumstances?” (Allow time for students to respond.)

“It’s worth the trouble when you know the history of the store. You see, the owner is a third-generation blackowned business. When the owner’s great-grandfather started the business, he was only one of a few black men to own one. The banks wouldn’t loan him money and his

Scripture Study: Jeremiah 38:6–13
Lesson Focus: God moves us to action in helping others.
Suggested Materials: Teen Student Folders, UMI Craft Booklet, Application Posters, pens, paper, extra Bibles.
Bible Background
The prophet Jeremiah was hated by the princes of Jerusalem because of his prophecies. He kept saying, “This city shall be given into the hands of the king of Babylon; though it will hold out long, it will be taken at last.” This was an unwelcome message, and the men accused Jeremiah of treason because people often renounce truth and God’s messengers when their plans and dreams will be affected. The princes asked the king if they could stop Jeremiah from upsetting the people. They imprisoned Jeremiah in a cistern, but Ebed-Melek, an Ethiopian servant of the king, interceded for Jeremiah.
This stranger in the land of Israel believed that Jeremiah was a man of God, and his message should be heard. Ebed-Melek cared enough about Jeremiah’s plight to risk the anger of the princes and the king. God honored Ebed-Melek’s faithfulness and softened the king’s heart. The king allowed Ebed-Melek to take thirty men with him to free Jeremiah. By a special order of the king, Jeremiah was taken up out of the cistern.
The prophesy against Jerusalem was fulfilled, but God spared both Jeremiah and Ebed-Melek’s lives.

I Can Take Action
Every Saturday for over a year, Tracy visited her adopted grandmother. She became her adopted grandmother through a church program that paired teen girls with older women living in nursing homes. Everyone else who was a part of the program stopped visiting their adopted grandmothers. Tracy kept going even though she was the only girl there. Sometimes, she’d visit the other women especially when they seemed lonely.
The other teens at Tracy’s church often teased her for continuing with the program. Deep down, Tracy knew she was doing the right thing, so she let their comments roll off her back.
When she graduated high school, Tracy received an envelope in the mail. Her adopted grandmother wrote a sweet note of her appreciation of Tracy’s visits. Tracy was moved to tears as she read the note, but she shouted for joy when she read the last lines. Her adopted grandmother wrote, “And because of your generosity, I’d like to pay for your college tuition. My son will send the money directly to your school.”
Tracy couldn’t believe how God rewarded her faithfulness and the love of her adopted grandmother!

Jeremiah 38:6–13, NIV—So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.
Teen Lesson 5

7 But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,
8 Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him,
9 “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.”
10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”
11 So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.
12 Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,
13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

Scripture Study: Luke 22:54–62
Lesson Focus: God forgives and cleanses us from all our sins.
Suggested Materials: Teen Student Folders, UMI Craft Booklet, Application Posters, pens, paper, extra Bibles.
Bible Background
Peter, one of the twelve disciples, made not only the greatest confession of faith but also the most cowardly denial. When Jesus spoke to His disciples about leaving, Peter asked Jesus where He was going. Jesus answered, “where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” Peter didn’t understand; he loved Jesus so much that wherever Jesus went, Peter believed he could and would go, too. Jesus maintained that Peter would be unable to go with Him; He also stated that Peter would deny Him.
Peter was very hurt that Jesus would even voice such a thing. He loved Jesus so much that he was willing to lay down his life for Christ. However, Peter didn’t know how weak the flesh can be. As Jesus predicted, Peter openly denied knowing Christ three times.
When Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, He asked Peter three times, “Do you truly love me?” When Peter replied that he did, Jesus told him to “feed my lambs…take care of my sheep…feed my sheep.” Peter repented, was forgiven and restored to his place of favor.

I Can Be Forgiven
Scribe: How long have you been a follower of Christ?
Peter: Since my brother, Andrew, brought me to Him.
Scribe: Have you always loved Him?
Peter: Yes. I promised Him that even if everyone else falls away, I wouldn’t. He predicted that I wouldn’t keep my promise, and He was right.
Scribe: How did it feel when you betrayed someone you loved so dearly?
Peter: Dreadful. I cried, but that didn’t ease my pain and guilt. My freedom came when I repented.
Scribe: Do you believe that Jesus really forgave you?
Peter: Yes! I know He forgave me. He gave me peace and the responsibilities He assigned to me reassured me that I was forgiven. I am so happy!
Scribe: How would you define forgiveness?
Peter: Well, it’s a gift from God, through Jesus Christ. We must recognize our faults, acknowledge our wrongs, and change our ways.
Scribe: How often will God forgive people?
Peter: God will forgive us as often as we sincerely repent, express genuine sorrow for disobeying Him and ask forgiveness. If we confess our sins to God, He will forgive and cleanse us from every wrong. God does this for us because Christ died to wash away our sins.
Scribe: Thanks, Peter. Your testimony that God will forgive and restore those who have fallen from grace will help many others to ask for God’s forgiveness.

55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.
56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” “Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.
61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”

20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again.
21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed.
24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand.
25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

(Background Research and Preparation for Lesson)
Scripture Study: John 20:11–18
Lesson Focus: God gives us the strength to be loyal.
Suggested Materials: Teen Student Folders, UMI Craft Booklet, Application Posters, pens, paper, extra Bibles.
Bible Background
Mary Magdalene cared about Jesus. Jesus released her from severe demonic oppression, and she became His faithful follower. Mary was also present at Jesus’ crucifixion, along with the other women who had journeyed with the Lord from Galilee. Her loyalty as a true follower of Christ was emphasized when Mary and other women stood by the Cross watching Jesus breathe His last breath.
On the first day of the week—the third day after Christ’s crucifixion—Mary visited Jesus’ tomb. She, along with the other women who were Jesus’ close followers, intended to anoint His body. To her dismay, Jesus’ body was not in the tomb. Her sadness knew no bounds; not only had Jesus died, but someone had stolen His body…at least that’s what she thought. Mary didn’t realize that Jesus had, in fact, risen from the dead, just as He said He would.
Mary was so overcome with grief that she was unable to recognize Jesus when He presented Himself to her. However, when He called her name, she knew she was in the presence of her beloved “Rabboni.” Mary would have grasped His feet in an act of worship and joy, but Jesus would not permit her. He wanted her to understand their relationship had changed. He was now the resurrected, glorified Lord—not yet ascended to God the Father. Jesus was in transition. He was leaving His earthly life for the life of the heavenly realm. He had to ease His disciples and followers into a new relationship with Him as He went through this transition.
This turn of events might have been very perplexing for Mary. Her intense joy was probably mixed with confusion and fear. But Jesus gave her a special task. The Master told her to tell the Good News to the disciples—that He is risen. This task was indicative of that given to the whole church—to go and tell others that the Savior is risen! Mary obeyed and the reality of the risen Christ became known.

I Can Be Loyal
Chanelle and Diamond have been friends for over 10 years. They’ve done everything together since kindergarten. Now, they were ready for high school and all summer long they talked about how much fun they were going to have with all the clubs and activities.
“We should try out for the volleyball team,” said Chanelle. “And since I’m running for class president, you should run for vice-president.”
Diamond laughed, “Girl I won’t have time for all that stuff. Have you seen the cute boys there on my reels? I can’t afford to be sweaty and spending my extra time in meetings.”
Chanelle looked at her friend, “Be for real…I thought we were going to stick together.”
“Yes, but I’ve saved all this babysitting money to buy the right clothes and get my hair and nails done every couple of weeks. There won’t be time for all that other stuff you have planned,” said Diamond.
“I’m confused. You know, there’s more to high school than just boys.” said Chanelle.
“I just don’t want to be over-involved in case I get a boyfriend,” said Diamond. “Look, I’m just keeping it real.”

13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Scripture Study: Acts 8:27–38
Lesson Focus: God will lead us to knowledge and truth.
Suggested Materials: Teen Student Folders, UMI Craft Booklet, Application Posters, pens, paper, extra Bibles.
Bible Background
Today’s lesson focuses on the conversion of an Ethiopian eunuch. The author of Acts reveals a further step in the expansion of the church beyond the Jewish world to the Gentile environment.
Philip, one of the first deacons of the church at Jerusalem, was sent by the Lord to Gaza to lead the Ethiopian eunuch to Christ. This eunuch was likely a Gentile who revered God or a convert to Judaism on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
Riding along in a covered, ox-drawn chariot, he read aloud from the prophet Isaiah. Philip overhead his reading and explained how Jesus was the One the Scripture was speaking about. He followed with the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The eunuch believed in Jesus and was baptized by Philip. Tradition supports that he went back home and was a missionary to his country.

I Have Knowledge
After attending Bible study with his friend, Sam realized that he wanted to follow Jesus.
Sam prayed all week and started reading Scripture for himself. By the end of the week, he was convinced that it was time for him to take that step of faith. He prayed with his friend to accept Jesus as Lord of His life. Sam immediately felt a change in his heart. For the first time he could remember, Sam felt truly at peace and joy.
Sam was excited to share with his mother this new knowledge that led to his transformation. He was surprised when his mother didn’t share his excitement. Instead, she was skeptical about pastors and churches. While Sam wasn’t sure how to address those issues, he was sure that he once was in darkness and now felt like he was in the light. He began to pray for wisdom on how to help his mother understand his new life.

This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. 31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before
its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” 34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” 37 Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” The eunuch answered, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Worship Time
Use the Jesus Connection Songbook and downloadable music.
Clean-Up
Have the students assist you in making sure that the room is restored to its original condition. Empty all the trash and wipe down all tables. You may either sing the Worship Time song or the memory verse song with the students as they clean. Send student folders and crafts home.
Closing
Have the students recite this prayer: “Dear God, thank You for saving me from my sins. Help me to continue to grow in the knowledge of Your Word so I can be a light to others and a testimony of Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
