Fortune Cookie & Sweet Fortune Yorkshires ‘best’ halal Chinese eatery arrives in Bradford

A journey that started in 2000, one of Yorkshire’s most popular Chinese halal food venues, Fortune Cookie and Sweet Fortune has opened its latest branch in Bradford.

Urban Echo caught up with the owner of the chic takeaway based opposite Bradford College on Grove Terrace, to talk about how it all started and what their future plans are.

As we met at the new branch, it was difficult to get through the entrance as hungry customers were queuing up to order from the diverse menu. One dish in particular that has proven popular in their other branches in Leeds and Dewsbury are the spicy wings, which have in time become the signature dish of Fortune Cookie.

As the owner takes a short break to talk to us, we ask him how Fortune Cookie came about at a time when Chinese halal food was not seen as appetising option fifteen years ago to south Asian households. He tells us, “We opened in Leeds in 2000.

At that time, we were the very first halal Chinese venue in Yorkshire.

After looking at the food market, we realised that there was a need for halal Chinese food because as we personally enjoyed the food, we found it frustrating that we could not eat the meat dishes as they were not halal.”

As the Bradford branch is based in the heart of a vibrant student population, Fortune Cookie is hoping for a diverse customer base as their other popular branches attract customers from all over Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. Their Chinese chefs are second to none as they produce a standard of food that cannot be matched by any other Chinese takeaway.

Fortune Cookie pride themselves on ‘good value for money’ as well as the freshest and best locally sourced produce.

Asked about what their future plans hold, “Our success has meant that have now opened in Bradford and

we will be working hard to offer the highest quality of food and service.

We offer a wide range of desserts and milk shakes. The seating is very comfortable so that families can come out and enjoy the food in the comfort of a friendly environment,” the owner concludes.

Broadway Shopping Centre opens varied kinds will provide services to the local consumers and outside visitors. In the adjacent areas of the centre, the public transport structure and network has been improved. Hopefully the new shopping centre will be able to bring back many of the customers who over the last twenty years or so gradually moved away from Bradford.

Tributes must be paid to the new leadership of the Council for its persistent efforts and hard work to bring this project eventually to fruition. Nevertheless, the Council still has to remain alert and vigilant to combat the possible side effects of this project on the older shopping areas of the City. One of the ways to obviate any adverse side effects could be to invest a portion of the Regional Growth Fund in these areas to incentivise and attract first time starters of small businesses, particularly young entrepreneurs.

On the other hand, there is a strong reason for the Broadway with the total investment of just over £260 million to act as a catalyst to attract further new money to the city. We need to be positive and optimistic about the future of our diverse city. One positive and encouraging comment one hears often from outsiders is that Bradford has a lot to offer in the field of diverse cultures and faiths. Sadly up to now, we have failed to cash in for this great asset.

With the vigour and rousing conviction of the City’s young population, supported by a strong leadership and the articulation of a new agenda for social and economic uplift of Bradford, could be the path to leap ahead. More importantly the grandiose project of the Broadway Shopping Centre alone should not be believed to be the panacea for all our economic ills. Persistent arduous efforts are still much needed in reviving investors’ confidence in Bradford as a preferred investment destination.

by Mohammed Ajeeb, CBE On this auspicious day, the grand opening of the new Broadway shopping centre, right in the heart of the city, took place.

It was undoubtedly a jubilant occasion for Bradfordian’s when thousands of them flocked to the city centre to demonstrate their faith in the future success of the City.

The occasion also marked the beginning of a new era for Bradford.

Historically, the site of development, from the days of its conception suffered many obstacles and controversies. The idea for this shopping centre was mooted in 1998 after the Council established its partnership with the private sector including other major stakeholders of the City. Deliberations on further development of this idea continued without any outcome. After completing the demolition of the earmarked area in 2006 the site became a wasteland. Due to unfavourable economic climate, no genuine interest was shown in the redevelopment other than Westfield Constructions. In 210 the Council decided to convert the wasteland to a temporary park. However during the 2012 by-election of Bradford West, the site became highly politically contentious. It was described as ‘a hole in the centre of Bradford’. It was only after many political altercations, accusations and counter accusations, that eventually the work on the site was resumed in January 2014. It is commendable that Westfield as the major contractors achieved their target and completed the entire project in less than two years.

In the total covered area of 570,000 sq. feet of the centre, there are 73 shops in four malls including 1300 car park spaces.

The price of dishonesty in divorce

A landmark decision handed down by seven Supreme Court Justices has enabled two divorcees to have their cases re-opened. This to allow them to seek larger payouts as a result of their former husband’s dishonesty when disclosing financial information in their divorces.

In 2004, Mrs Gohil accepted £270,000 and the family Peugeot from her ex-husband after divorcing him for alleged adultery and unreasonable behaviour. However, it later transpired that not only had Mr Gohil accrued significant wealth that he had not disclosed to his wife but that he was actually fully involved in a money laundering scam with Nigerian politician James Ibori in which together they stole over £50million from the oil-rich region Ibori governed. In 2012, following the discovery of this, and Mr Gohil’s subsequent incarceration, Mrs Gohil pursued a claim emerging victorious in the High Court with an Order in tow stating that the divorce settlement was to be scrapped due to non-disclosure. However, Mr Gohil successfully appealed the decision. Lord Justice McFarlane, sitting in the Court of Appeal, offered Mrs Gohil his sympathy but reiterated that a) she had no right to the money if it was ill gotten and b) that it was “simply not open to the court” to decide in 2012 about an issue discussed in 2004.

Concurrently, Mrs Sharland contested her divorce settlement in which she garnered £10.3 million from her ex-husband’s computer software company AppSense.

His assets, initially valued at £7 million by his accountants and £32 million by her accountants, when discussing the original settlement did not disclose the real net worth of the business. Unbeknown to Mrs Sharland this business was said to be potentially worth £1 billion making Mr Sharland’s shares, those initially disclosed as being worth £7 million, worth £150 million. Mr Sharland openly

admitted to seriously misleading his ex-wife. Yet, the High Court and Court of Appeal both concluded that this dishonesty did not make any difference to the finality of the settlement.

agreements. The Supreme Court therefore had to consider whether a failure to provide full and frank disclosure should automatically invalidate a settlement reached or whether that should only be the case if that would have been “material” i.e. would it have made a significant difference to the likely settlement or not?

The Supreme Court unanimously allowed the appeals of both women.

In Sharland, Lady Hale giving the only judgement stated that “a party who has practised deception with

a view to a particular end, which has been attained by it, cannot be allowed to deny its materiality. Mrs Sharland’s application for financial relief will return to the Family Division of the High Court for further directions. In Gohil, Lord Wilson giving the main judgement held that the “respondent failed to discharge his duty to make full and frank disclosure” Therefore, in both cases the Supreme Court made clear the impact that dishonesty can play in the negotiation and consequent

acceptance of financial settlements.

The Supreme Court’s view is clearly that dishonesty can invalidate a settlement. This could open the floodgates for a lot of similar cases coming before the Courts.

Nevertheless it acts as a strong deterrent to those spouses who are being dishonest and not sharing all the details of their wealth to the courts. Many will feel that these cases were matters of principle and justice for both women involved and all spouses who find themselves in a similar situation

Bradford West MP, Naz Shah:

Six months on

It has been almost six months since the people of Bradford West placed their trust in me and voted for me. What a journey I’ve been on since!

On a personal level, it has been a bit of a roller coaster and people in Westminster weren’t kidding when they said the first 6 weeks will be just induction and settling, including setting up two new offices and recruiting staff.

Locally, I am pleased to report that we now a have a full team of staff who are working hard on behalf of the residents of Bradford West. On average, the local office are dealing with more than 125 constituent queries on a weekly basis.

In terms of my own parliamentary work, I am pleased with my most recent appointment to the Home Affairs Select Committee.

Very early on following my election, I had my first experience of something very international yet very local. Nothing could have prepared me for grappling with the idea of any local women taking their children to Syria and the media interest that followed suit. It is still something that troubles me and I can imagine it will be something I will never be able to reconcile.

My interest in this issue of radicalisation, extremism, Islamaphobia and policing, influenced my decision to put myself forward for the role which I am enjoying immensely, as it is challenging me and my own learnings whilst I also have the chance to hold the government to account on issues, particularly around extremism, which is one of the bigger issues we are grappling with as a country including the rise of Deash.

I also had the honour of being a member of the Welfare Bill Committee which gave me an opportunity to raise the voice of my constituents around the unacceptable changes, particularly the welfare cap and tax credits that this government wants to bring in.

The cuts proposed will hit those in need the most and tax credits are a hand up, not a hand out!

Some of the other areas of work I am now also involved with are

around human rights issues. Only this morning, I have agreed to support the work of an international charity around the legality of the use of drones. I also continue to contribute regularly to discussions around humanitarian issues within Palestine and Kashmir and am I committed to keeping that dialogue going and raising awareness.

As a feminist with a keen interest around the issues of violence against women, I will be supporting

discussions and facilitating meetings in relation to women in India and Pakistan as well as here in the UK. Some of the groups I will be working with include Muslim Women’s Network UK, Southall Black Sisters, Women of the World and the Cortson Review.

Around local issues, I have been meeting regularly in Bradford with all those involved in key issues. For example, I have met with the Leader of the Council no less than six times on issues including education, development, the Syrian refugee crisis and employment/business development. Obviously, we still have more work to do in these areas and I am keen to see rapid improvement.

I have met the head of the LEP and we are exploring development opportunities in the city going forward, especially with the new Westfield shopping complex now open.

I have developed good working relationships with the police and the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner and I am regularly updated on issues pertinent to Bradford West.

I am also in regular dialogue with our other local service providers and have meetings scheduled with the hospitals trust and higher educational institutes so we can work together for the betterment of our communities. The police, hospitals, schools, university and colleges are all key service providers that are under increasing

pressure, and it’s imperative that we try to continue to be innovative and support front line staff, whilst striving to provide the best possible services in Bradford.

Work aside, it’s been an interesting few months. Unfortunately I didn’t get to enjoy the summer recess due to illness and a spell in hospital. I had lots planned which could not happen, in particular, catching up with people locally.

Although it’s only been 6 months, it feels much longer especially when my youngest child is now stringing together long sentences and having proper conversations. I also now have my daughter in secondary school. It’s also been a huge honour to win a national award for overcoming adversity and making it on to the ‘Most Influential British Asians Power List’ in such a short time into my job made it all the more humbling.

Now with the leadership contest over, I’m looking forward to the next six months and I am confident of making further progress and building upon the work I am already doing.

You don’t need to be Muslim to appreciate suffering

by Amara Patel There has been sporadic coverage of the ongoing conflict in Palestine within the mainstream media with one or two deaths making the national news.

‘Since the beginning of October, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been injured and 25 Palestinians have been killed. Most of those who have been killed are under the age of 25. In the last week, Israeli forces have injured over 50 Palestinian children.’ (FOA website 21/10/15) Having had this brought to my attention, I felt compelled to attend the pro-Palestinian demonstration held at the Israeli Embassy in London on Saturday 17 October.

What seemed like a great cause felt less worthy as my alarm clock burst in to life in what seemed like the middle of the night. I dragged myself to the meeting point of our coach in anticipation of our 200 mile journey to London, only to find I was one of 5 women in a coach full of men.

Having left Yorkshire at the crack of dawn, we arrived in London for midday. The journey allowed me to catch up on my beauty sleep which I had so nobly forsaken for this worthy cause. Whilst I’ve been to demonstrations before, this felt different because I knew I was going to be writing about the gathering.

My initial thoughts as we reached the demonstration was that as demo’s go, this one was relatively small, numbering over 2000 people. However, what we lacked in numbers, we more than made up for in passion and energy. When I looked around me and spoke to my fellow protestors I realised we

were a real mixed bag, made up of people from different races and religions, including some who were Jewish, protesting against the actions of their own government.

I also noticed the broad age spread of the protestors, which ranged from older activists, right the way to babies being pushed around in pushchairs. But perhaps the biggest surprise for me was that the majority of the people attending the demonstration were clearly not Muslims. I naively assumed that given the Muslim suffering in Palestine, this would galvanise Muslims to attending the demo.

This particular observation filled me with hope and despair. Despair in the sense that given the levels of suffering in Palestine, more

Muslims would’ve sacrificed a precious Saturday to attend the demo. The hope comes from seeing so many non Muslims being supportive of the Palestinian cause.

It taught me that you don’t need to be Muslim to appreciate suffering of the Palestinians, you just need to be human. Muslims and non Muslims alike are able to appreciate that the deaths of innocent men, women and children can never be justified and I came away from the day with hope that the movement in support of the Palestinian cause needs to embrace all religions and cultures because ultimately, it’s a tale of human suffering, which is something all decent people can identify with, regardless of race or religion.

I have recently launched my Hate Crime Campaign jointly with West Yorkshire Police.

Using videos and case studies of victims of hate crime I want to show people just what hate crime is and how much of an impact it can have on the victims and those around them.

Raising awareness of hate crime and how to report them is a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan but needs reinforced with campaigns like this. I want victims and witnesses of these crimes to feel able to come forward and report it to individuals and organisations they trust. Hate crime is not acceptable in any form. We all need to challenge the attitudes and behaviours that foster hatred because with early intervention and education we can make a real difference to communities making sure they are safer and feel safer, which is how we should expect to go about our lives.

There are five main categories of hate crime – disability, faith, race, sexual orientation and transphobic.

These are split into a number of sub-categories including antiChristian, anti-Hindu, anti-Islam, anti-Semitism and anti-Sikh for faith and learning, physical, sensory and mental for disability.

Harassment, threats, offensive graffiti, physical abuse, vandalism and inciting hatred online are all forms of hate crime. They can have a devastating effect on a single victim and the potential to divide communities.

It’s important that everyone realises that they have a part to play in reporting hate incidents, whether you are a victim or a witness to hate crime. It may be that some incidents are not dealt with as a criminal offence but by

letting the police know, they can ensure that support and advice are offered to those involved and action taken where appropriate. The reporting of incidents also helps build up a picture of any emerging patterns and helps the police and partner agencies to work with our communities.

I am also working closely with West Yorkshire Police to improve how we monitor hate crime on a regular basis to help people who suffer

these crimes to ensure they have the confidence to come forward and say what has happened to them the evaluation of this information is being developed to gain a better understanding of the picture in West Yorkshire.

A Plausible Perspective

The Prime Minister, David Cameron has made it clear that at the end of this term in Downing Street, he will step down. Nonetheless, as pledged in 2013, he is bound to hold an in-out from the EU referendum before the end of 2017.

Judged by some of his not-easyto-understand assertions, he is leaving the country in the lurch.

When he says: “English votes for English laws”, it connotes that he is saying goodbye to the Scots before they actually opt for independence.

Thus, there is a state of uncertainty – uncertainty about the future constitutional relationship between the different components of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Though SNP were humbled following the “No” vote in the Scottish independence referendum yet it left the sovereignty of Westminster internally within the UK in question.

Mr Cameron, irrespective of achieving anything substantial in renegotiation with the leaders of the EU, has to go for referendum.

It will turn out later whether he will campaign to remain in or to get out of the EU. Either way his campaign would hinge upon 4 things – preferences of the people on EU membership, the question asked in the referendum, Conservatives’ popularity and inter- and intra-party politics.

According to the latest opinion polls 40% of the people want to leave the EU. Receiving 4 million votes, 13% of those cast, UKip, who won the last EU elections, are campaigning for Britain’s exit from the EU. A substantial number of Tory MPs and many MPs of the Labour party are also in favour of exit.

In referendums, the question asked is always of crucial importance. In 2013, Conservatives suggested: “Do you think the UK should remain

a member of European Union, Yes or No”. This question was widely criticised by various circles.

Thus, the Electoral Commission intervened and proposed: “Should UK remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” This question was accepted by the Prime Minister Mr Cameron.

Though the Tories won 2015 general elections to the extent of forming government comfortably without sharing power with any other party, yet they are not comfortable over the in-out question. David Cameron wants to stay in the EU once he got some powers back from it. At the moment, Cameron is reluctant to reveal the full details of what he wants from the EU leaders but he is expected to demand opt-out

from the EU ambition to forge a United States of Europe. His other demands may include restriction of access to in-work and out-of-work benefits to EU migrants, greater powers to national parliaments to block EU legislation, freeing of businesses from red tape and excessive interference from Brussels, protection of City of London financial markets from EU legislation and lastly, creating safeguards to ensure changes in the single market that should not be imposed on non-euro zone members by the euro zone.

Here I must stop to stress over another aspect of the issue, and that is, referendums quite often turn out to be the popularity tests of the incumbent government. Just like mid-term polls, these provide an opportunity to the public to

express their indignation with the performance of the government.

Here I would like to quote Michelle Dorrell, 35, a mum of 4, and a Tory voter, who broke down in tears on Question Time (15/10/15). Full of tears she confronted the energy secretary Amber Rudd saying: “I thought you were going to be better for me and my children.” As she said this the audience members shouted: “Shame on you.” So things like these cannot be ignored and these will make the legacy David Cameron would be leaving for his successor.

Then there is a tug of war within and without the Conservatives.

There is no denying the fact that when a party is split internally, it cannot successfully persuade voters of their leadership’s message. There are quite a few

Tory MPs who would cause internal division. On the contrary, it seems more likely that internal divisions within the Labour party will make a ‘Brexit’ (Britain’s exit from EU) more plausible. Though both the Lib Dems and the Labour opposed referendum during the general elections saying that no referendum unless there were plans to transfer more powers from the UK to the EU but later on Labour stopped opposing referendum.

The Labour party, SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Lib Dems are in favour of staying in the EU. They believe that Britain gets a big boost from EU membership – it makes selling things easier. They argue that the flow of immigrants, most of whom are young and keen to work, enhance the economic growth and helps pay for public services. They also believe that Britain’s status in the world would be damaged by leaving EU. David Cameron has said that there is “no doubt” his planned reforms will require changes to the treaties governing the EU. But this would require the unanimous support of all EU members, and it may not be possible within the deadline he has set for a referendum before the end of 2017.

However, Jean-Claude Junker, President of the European Commission, has said he is ready to work with Mr Cameron to “strike a fair deal for the UK in the EU.” “The ball is very much in the court of the UK now”, a senior official told the Guardian. “It’s up to the British to define what they want.”

Foam Rolling Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) technique used by athletes and physical therapists to aid in recovery of muscles that are prone to being overactive.

Fascia is the soft tissue portion of the connective tissue in the muscle that provides support and protection. The fascia can become restricted due to overuse, trauma, and inactivity.

Consequently, inflammation occurs and if it becomes bad enough the connective tissue can thicken, which results in pain and irritation, and additional inflammation.

The self-myofascial release technique via foam rolling is performed by rolling the foam roller under each muscle group until a tender area is found, and maintaining pressure by one’s own body weight on the tender area for 30–60 seconds Foam rolling has transformed from a once mysterious technique used only by professional athletes, coaches, and therapists to a familiar everyday practice for people at all levels of fitness.

Recent information, technology, and affordable products have introduced an increasing array of training and recovery methods to the average person.

Self-myofascial release is a fancy term for self-massage to release muscle tightness or trigger points.

By applying pressure to specific points on your body you are able to aid in the recovery of muscles and assist in returning them to normal function. Normal function means your muscles are elastic, healthy, and ready to perform at a moment’s notice.

For many, deep tissue massage is easy to understand. Ideally someone is able to work out the knots in your muscles, and it is commonly known this process may be uncomfortable and at times

painful. Self-myofascial release provides the user the ability to control the healing and recovery process by applying pressure in precise locations, because only you can feel exactly what is happening.

It is always recommended to consult with your physician or physical therapist for therapeutic/ sharp pain and receive approval before starting self-myofascial release. For most people you will be cleared immediately and your doctor will encourage the practice.

Trigger points are specific “knots” that form in muscles. They are unique and can be identified because they will refer pain. Pain referral, for our purposes, can most easily be described as the pain felt when pressure is applied to one area of the body, but the pain is felt or radiated in another area.

A common example of a trigger point is felt while foam rolling your iliotibial (IT) band as it causes pain to radiate up to the hip or all the way down the leg to the ankle.

When rolling or working on tight/ sore muscles you will experience discomfort or pain. Think of it like the pain you get while stretching.

It should be uncomfortable, but not unbearable, and when you are done it should feel better.

Releasing trigger points helps to reestablish proper movement patterns and pain free movement, and ultimately, to enhance performance.

Utilizing stretching alone is not always enough to release muscles tightness, which is why foam rollers have thrived on the mass market.

The Greats on Writing

by Naureen Hafiz James Baldwin once said that “you write in order to change the world ... if you alter, even by a millimetre, the way people look at reality, then you can change it.”, It reminded me of all the works I had ever read, whether that was a piece of work written by a friend, or an essay, or a full blown literary epic, that had changed the way that I viewed the world. And if you think far back enough, it may have even started from childhood, with your love of literature stemming from the outdoor adventures of Biff, Chip and

Kipper (and never forgetting their wonderful dog Floppy of course!).

It also reminded me of a quote by Orwell which I talked about briefly in a previous article where he said that good writing was like a window pane.

It seems that many writers have the same idea of what good writing should do, that it should change the world and the way that you see the world.

I want to continue this point with something the Lewis Carroll said, arguably most famous for his

children’s book ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” “Write about what really interests you, whether it is real things or imaginary things, and nothing else.”

His advice is rather simple, write about what you are passionate about. And, dear readers, it is so easy to forget to write about what you love. Getting caught up in work and assignments and more work, it’s easy to forget to write about what interests us. Myself included.

I’m not saying don’t do work or assignments!

But what I am saying is make time to write about the things you love to write about.

Actually... I suppose this doesn’t pertain to just writing.

Make time to do the things you love doing. Painting, gardening, sporting, reading, make time for it.

Make time for yourself because it’s easy to forget yourself when life gets busy.

Don’t forget yourself, dear readers.

Adele reveals details of new album 25 Adele announced on Twitter last month that her new album, her first in four years, would be called 25.

The singer won six Grammy awards for her 2011 album 21 and an Academy Award, Grammy, Golden Globe and Brit Award for the theme song to the last James Bond movie, Skyfall.

In a statement on her Facebook page, the singer says: “My last record was a break up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make-up record. I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did.”

It follows months of speculation regarding the follow-up to her platinum selling 21 album, which was released in 2011. It also follows the screening of an album teaser during the advert break of British X Factor on Sunday 18 October, in which a snippet of Adele singing an unknown song played over a black

screen with the lyrics: “Hello, it’s me / I was wondering if after all these years / you’d like to meet to go over everything / they say that time’s supposed to heal ya / but I ain’t done much healing ...”.

Commuter Beauty

Where do you stand when it comes to glamming up on the go?

For some people it’s an absolute no-no, believing that there should be some mystery when it comes to the art of making-up, or that it’s inconsiderate to other passengers, whereas others argue that with such busy lives getting ready on the morning commute is their only option. Now, I can appreciate both viewpoints, but I haven’t quite made my mind up which camp

I’m in. This indecision stems from the time I took a coach trip across the North Yorkshire moors where I witnessed a fellow passenger apply a full face of make-up as the coach twisted and turned it’s way along the bumpy, winding roads, and I realised that I was simultaneously both seriously impressed by her ability to deftly apply her make-up whilst the coach was in motion, and equally concerned by the potential dangers of this beautifying feat!

Although, I must confess that since the clocks have gone back and the mornings are growing ever darker and colder, I can certainly see the appeal of hitting snooze a couple more times and getting ready en route!

However, this is where my acutely sensitive make-up artist’s health and safety conscious reflex kicks in, causing me to start spouting words of caution that if you are going to do any kind of glamourising on the go there are a few things to bear in mind to minimise the potential dangers of pampering on public transport. So I’ve put together some tips to help make the act as safe, speedy and simple as possible.

But first, a word about manners, as the fact is that public transport is just that, it’s public, and as previously mentioned some people

are really not on board with the notion of on-board beautifying. I sought guidance on this thoroughly modern matter from a very traditional source, turning to specialist publisher’s Debrett’s who have been advising us (or should that be we?) British on matters of manners and etiquette since the mid 1900s, who state on their website that applying make-up on public transport can “jeapordise that all important first impression and make you appear disorganised.” Now, I think that appearing disorganised is possibly not the primary concern of anyone indulging in this particular beauty behavior, but the impact of it on other passengers arguably should Sweet Centre 106 Lumb Lane Bradford BD8 7RS 8am - 10pm

All that’s needed to avoid the scathing side-eyes look, or full on glare from a disapproving fellow passenger is an awareness that your beauty routine doesn’t cause you to infringe upon anyone else’s personal space, and that you are mindful of the type of products you are using, as some products could potentially negatively affect those around you. So any strongly fragranced products, or anything applied from a spray can or aerosol should be left at home. Same goes for any loose powder products, some people have allergies that can be triggered by such products, and you don’t want to run the risk of accidentally engulfing your neighbouring passenger in a powder cloud - as that could make for quite an awkward journey!

Now let’s move on to my top 3 commuter beauty tips …

1. Keep it clean!

Hand sanitizer should be considered the most important product in your mobile make-up kit, and should be used before your fingers go anywhere near your face. I’m not fearmongering here, but chances are that by the time you’ve taken your seat you’ve probably handled some change and held a handrail or two, potentially picking up some bacteria you probably don’t want in the vicinity of your visage - particularly during cold and flu season.

2. Give brushes the brush-off Creamy formulations are the most commute-friendly products and should be blended with fingers wherever possible. The benefits of this are two-fold, firstly it’s easier to manoeuvre your fingers than a brush when applying make-up on a moving vehicle, and secondly, should the vehicle come to an abrupt stop, or hit a speed bump, you are less likely to poke yourself

Pupils graduate Literacy from Nursery Pupils at Westbourne Nursery had their first experience of transition and achievement at a very early age when they “graduated” at the end of the summer term.

There were two ceremonies, one for the pupils who attend nursery in the mornings and the other for the afternoon children, for those pupils

who will be starting Reception in September. They all received a graduation certificate and wore mortar boards and sashes in the school colours. Proud parents and carers made up the audience. The next cohort of Nursery pupils is now settling in well to school life at Westbourne.

“Yorkshire Greats” Elections at Immanuel Staff and students at Immanuel College took part in their own election to vote for the greatest Yorkshire person, as opposed to a political candidate. Pupils had to research the “great” they were voting for, which increased their own knowledge while also learning the process of an election. The school set up a polling station in its library.

The overall winner was Ben Parkinson, the paratrooper who has been recovering from his deep wounds after being badly injured by a huge anti-tank mine. The Bishop

of Bradford, the Reverend Dr Toby Howarth, announced the winners.

In second place was Bradford’s own magician Dynamo, and in third place was pop star Ed Sheeran.

More than 5,000 children and young people have so far been involved in the National Literacy Trust Hub in Bradford, which works in partnership with Bradford Council and other local partners to create long-term change where low levels of literacy are entrenched, intergenerational and seriously impacting on people’s lives. The initiative works with schools, public services, businesses, communities and cultural, faith and voluntary groups through the Bradford Literacy Campaign.

Local role models and celebrities have backed a host of campaigns.

These include a book giveaway in City Park supported by Bradford Bulls, Yorkshire Cricket Club, Bradford City player James Hanson (pictured below reading with a child in City park) and boxers Saira Tabusum and Tasif Khan. Tasif also visited a local school to talk about his favourite book to inspire teenage boys to read more. The Hub has also linked up with a hairdresser in Girlington who now encourages young people to read books aloud to him while they have their hair cut.

A key priority is to encourage men to be actively involved in their children’s literacy by working closely with a group of dads at sessions in children’s centres. Contemporary poetry workshops were delivered to more than 150 pupils and a ‘Love Keighley’ poetry competition was launched. The Hub built links between two madrassas and local schools resulting in children performing their pieces at the international Saif-ul-Malook festival in Bradford.

The Bradford Hub offers free support for every school in the district to develop outstanding literacy provision through the National Literacy Trust Network.

Programme (PLRS), which uses the motivational power of football to inspire children, particularly boys, to enjoy books, was rolled out in 26 schools. All boys who participated in the PLRS programme made more than expected improvement in reading, with three boys making the equivalent of a year’s progress or more after completing the ten sessions.

Bradford Council’s Ofsted report Bradford Council’s Children’s Services School Improvement service was inspected by Ofsted in June as part of its routine inspections of local authorities around the country.

In the published report Ofsted found evidence of a “step change” in Bradford Council’s approach. The report stated that the local authority

had been too slow in driving improvement in the attainment, progress and attendance of pupils in the past, but it endorsed the Council’s renewed strategy and its school-led improvement plan.

Ofsted identified a “cause for optimism” but it indicated that time will tell in terms of seeing the impact on results.

The Grey City Berlin is the capital of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.5 million people, it is the second most populous city proper and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union.

Located in north-eastern Germany on the banks of Rivers Spree and Havel, it is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has about six million residents from over 180 nations. Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate.

Around one-third of the city’s area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.

HISTORY Founded in the 13th century, Berlin has had an eventful history.

Excavations from 2008 suggest that the city may be even older than was previously assumed: state archaeologists have discovered an oak beam that probably dates back to 1183.

Almost no other metropolis has experienced such frequent, radical change transforming the face of the city. Although Berlin saw steady growth in its importance, dazzling epochs alternated with darker eras.

Nevertheless, the formerly divided city has succeeded in becoming a vibrant metropolis in the heart of Europe. Berlin’s history has left the city with a highly eclectic array of architecture and buildings.

the 1871 German Empire, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, East Germany, and now the reunified Germany — initiated ambitious (re-)construction programs, with each adding its own distinctive style to the city’s architecture.

TOP 5 PLACES TO VISIT Grunewald forest Grunewald is Berlin’s largest forested area, to the south-west of Charlottenburg and easily accessible via S-bahn. Pack a picnic and head down here for a day of tranquil respite from the bustle of the city. Venture through the woods by foot, bicycle or on horseback and, if weather permits, take a dip in the clean waters of Schlachtensee or Wannsee, the nearest of the forest’s several freshwater lakes.

Olympic Stadium The Olympiastadion exemplifies fascist taste in architecture. This arcaded classical oval of pale Franconian stone is simple but grandiose and on an epic scale.

Its greatest claim to fame however came during the 1936 Olympics, which had been intended by the National Socialist government to be a showcase for Aryan triumph. Instead the stadium was the spot where black American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals, emphatically disproving Hitler’s ideas about racial superiority in front of the world’s media.

Bauhaus Museum You’ll find out that everyone can be a designer at the Bauhaus Archiv, which offers a total insight into the development of the utilitarian art school that came out

of Weimar Germany. The school’s founder, architect Walter Gropius, drew up plans for the elegant white building that now houses the museum. Its permanent exhibition displays furniture, ceramics, prints, sculptures, photographs and sketches, all created in the workshop.

Berlin Wall The Wall was mostly demolished between June and November 1990 although a restored stretch remains along the southern border of Wedding and Mitte. Visit Checkpoint Charlie, the famous east-west border control during the Cold War and now a tourist centre, for comprehensive display boards telling the Wall’s story. For more of a visual history, take a walk along the Wall by the Spree, where it runs between the Freidrichshain-Kreuzberg districts.

Museum Island At the eastern end of Unter den Linden is Museum Island, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site lying in the middle of the Spree. It’s home to five of Berlin’s most important museums: two not to be missed are the Neues Museum, home to the Egyptian bust of Nefertiti and the spectacular Pergamonmuseum, one of the world’s major archaeological museums. Within it you walk through a series of astounding structures, from a partial recreation of the Pergamon Altar (170–159 BC) to the two-storey Roman Gate of Miletus (29 metres wide and almost 17 metres high) and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, dating from the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar (605–563 BC).

The gift of sensitivity

Dear Urbanites, I hope that you are well. This month I would like to explore with you how being a sensitive person is a real gift and also ways to protect that sensitivity.

Are you a sensitive person?

Throughout my life I have often been described as ‘over-sensitive’ or ‘too emotional’. These are putdowns that resulted in me growing up to believe that being sensitive was a negative character trait that crying easily was a weakness. My understanding has changed and I now believe that being sensitive is one of my gifts.

Being sensitive can mean many things; crying easily, being deeply hurt by criticism and hurtful remarks, worrying about what people think, taking things personally or experiencing positive and negative emotions more deeply.

Psychologist Elaine Aron author of ‘The Highly Sensitive Person’ estimates that 20% of people are highly sensitive.

There are many benefits in being a sensitive person. It could be that you feel deeply connected to people, nature, animals, music or art. I believe that it can mean you love deeper and hurt deeper. It is likely that you have developed a finely tuned intuitive side to your nature. You can pick up on other people’s needs, you are a giver rather than a taker and you more often follow your heart rather than your head. Sensitive people tend to be empathic, kind and compassionate people who can easily put themselves in the shoes of another. These are wonderful gifts.

Once you decide to embrace your sensitivity, you may find that instead of feeling more vulnerable, that you feel stronger and better able to use your gifts.

In order to protect your sensitivity, it helps to be aware of people, places and things that cause you to

shut down, feel numb or leave the present moment.

There are some positive steps that you can take to protect your sensitivity:1. Be in the present moment – presence ignites sensitivity. When we’re ruminating about the past or worrying about the future, we miss the only real experience we can ever have: the one that’s happening right now in this moment. It’s in the present that we find the richness and meaning that we long for. So bring your attention back to now this is the place to feel truly alive.

2. Turn down the noise – Sensitivity is nurtured by silence.

A still space can give you much better access to creativity, wisdom and insight, as well as the ability

to solve problems with more ease. Often answers to questions can emerge from stillness.

What’s plugged in, turned on and making noise? To get an idea of how turning down the noise can benefit you, you could turn the radio and TV off now and again.

3. Stop the violence – It helps to limit exposure to all forms of violent news or films. The level of fear and anxiety contained in most media stories is toxic to the nervous system, when we listen or read it on a regular basis, we begin to shut down to handle the emotional stress. Research shows that watching such news lowers the immune system, then we become naturally desensitized and can tolerate more negativity, which in turn adversely affects us.

4. Put limits on toxic people – These are people in your life who dump their frustration, anger and disappointment on you, who put you down, are consistently negative or with whom you feel anxious or on your guard. It can help to set boundaries - perhaps by having an honest conversation about how things need to change for you, or limit the amount of time you spend in their company or avoid them altogether.

5. Manage technology – Today we can be plugged in 24/7 in this age of ‘let me get to you whenever I want to or need to’. We need to remember who’s in charge – the trick is to manage technology

in such a way that we become responders, not reactors.

Bradford women Launch of new urged to attend breast community midwifery screen appointments service in Bradford A new midwife-led project which aims to provide personalised, oneto-one maternity care to women living in some of the poorest areas of Bradford, has begun.

Around 400 women living in Bowling, Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton will benefit from the new community partnership between Bradford Teaching Hospitals and Bradford Trident, who are leading the Better Start Bradford (BSB) £49million Big Lottery Fund programme which aims to help parents give their children the best start in life.

Head of midwifery, Julie Walker, said: “Our new three-year pilot programme will focus on offering enhanced antenatal and postnatal care with an emphasis on women knowing their named midwife.

“Our seven community midwives and maternity support worker will offer the very best, gold standard, one-to-one service out in the community.

“The women will benefit from a more individualised and tailored approach as our midwives will have smaller caseloads, enabling the woman to have longer appointments and be seen in venues which they tell us are more accessible for them. This scheme will ensure our team provides a greater and more in-depth continuity and co-ordination of care.”

Where woman have multiple hospital appointments, the named midwife will help organise these to provide more synchronised care.

The same midwife will also help women to plan for the place and type of birth of the woman’s choice.

The new partnership also aims to address the social and emotional needs of families and babies,

enhance the development of language and communication skills, support new mums in breastfeeding and provide information on the nutritional requirements of babies and toddlers.

Michaela Howell, programme director for BSB, said: “Part of what BSB is about is supporting innovative ideas and new ways of working.

“This is our third project to ‘go live’ and we will be looking forward to seeing how it improves womens’ experience of pregnancy and birth and the outcomes for their babies.”

The programme will be evaluated throughout its three-year period and healthcare staff hope to see a number of improved outcomes,

including increased satisfaction, earlier engagement with maternity services, an increase in the number of women having home births, a decrease in pre-term births and low birth weight babies, reduced rates of smoking and an increase in breastfeeding rates.

“Throughout this new pilot, we hope that ongoing evaluations will help shape and develop our future midwifery service provision for all women and their babies within Bradford” added Mrs Walker.

The pilot will initially involve all pregnant women registered with GP practices at Woodroyd Centre, Hillside Bridge and three surgeries at Barkerend Health Centre.

Women across the city are being urged to take up their routine breast screening checkup appointments.

The latest figures from the Pennine Breast Screening programme, based at St. Luke’s Hospital, reveal that out of the 34,724 women checked in 2013/14, 200 were diagnosed with cancer.

Leah Richardson, principal superintendent radiographer in breast imaging, said: “Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women and 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.”

“Eighty per cent of breast cancer cases occur in women over 50-years-old and the risk of breast cancer increases as we get older.”

“Women aged over 70 can still get free breast screening every three years but they need to contact us if they want to make an appointment.”

Breast screening appointments generally take no more than 30 minutes and can help save lives.

The breast screening programme estimates that screening may save around 1,400 lives nationally every year as it can show changes in the breast up to two years before

symptoms appear.

If changes to the breast are found early the outcome for women can be a lot better and the majority of women who come for breast screening get the all clear.

Lynn Clark, the service’s health promotion specialist, added: “Women of all ages are advised to regularly check their breasts and be breast aware. Being breast aware simply means knowing what your breasts look and feel like normally and reporting any unusual changes to your doctor. “ Changes to look for include: • Unusual changes in the shape, size or feel of your breasts • A lump or thickening in the breast or armpit area • Unusual puckering or dimpling of the skin • Changes in the position of the nipple or a nipple discharge • Any unusual pain in the breast or armpit.

Pennine unit gets in the pink October was breast cancer awareness month and staff at the Pennine Breast Screening Unit, based at St Luke’s Hospitals, turned pink for charity.

The team have raised £6,000 Sweet Centre 106 Lumb Lane Bradford BD8 7RS 8am - 10pm

over the last eight years for Breast Cancer Care and this year the fundraising continued with tombolas, raffles and bake sales.

The unit’s reception was also decorated in pink.

Dear Aunty Anne, My boyfriend and I have just come back from holiday. He’s always been chubby but while we were away I realised he’s got really fat. People stared and I heard some of them laughing and commenting. I pretended we weren’t together. I felt so embarrassed to be with him and wished he didn’t look so bad. It’s a turn off for me to see him naked. Even in clothes it’s not attractive. I have spoken to him many times about his size, healthy eating and exercise. I tried to get him to join a gym with me. He laughs it off and says he is fine. This holiday has shown me he must change. How do I make him do that?

If you want him to lose weight you need to make him understand your feelings without making it feel like it is a massive issue. Let him know that you feel less attracted to him physically, speak to him on a level without making him feel patronised or pressured.

As for them asking about the ins and outs of your relationship, you need to make clear to them that they have no right to ask about these things and that you and your husband have a good relationship.

If they continue, report them. It is no business of theirs what you do in your private life.

I can’t get my girlfriend off the grip of cocaine Dear Aunty Anne, I love her to bits, but can’t ignore the fact that she’s falling apart.

It’s getting to the point where she can’t function without a fix.

She’s playing with her health, spending money she doesn’t have and alienating herself from her family and friends. At the moment she’s utterly devastated because both her mother and sister have both told her that they don’t want to see her again until she’s cleaned up her act.

On top of that her father has announced that he will never give her another penny again.

She’s devastated.

Our first date was in a grungy underground club. She offered me a line but I said “no thanks” because drugs do nothing for me, but she indulged anyway.

Look, I’m not judging her. I’m just very worried because she’s using so much. Of course I’ve told her that I’d like her to cut back and be fully in control of her life once more. She claims that she could stop any time she likes, that she’s not dependent on anything.

Sadly that’s a lie. We both work in the same industry and I’ve noticed that she has to have a snort before she leaves home in the morning. She can’t attend a conference, meet a client or close a deal without a little marching powder first.

This isn’t about you judging her, this is simply about the fact that she is seriously harming her health and well-being as well as harming the people around her. I’m sure that she doesn’t want this, and I’m sure that she does want to quit seeing as this habit has chased away her family members.

If you need to, take her to a rehab clinic where she can get clean. Take her to a mental health professional where she can talk about her problems, and most of all, be there for her as she will need your support.

Bringing breath-taking power and outstanding performance to the road The original Audi supercar came out in in 2007, and proved to be a huge success for the German brand, with sales of the first Audi R8 exceeding all expectations.

The car will rival the latest Porsche 911, and will initially only be available with a twin-clutch S tronic transmission and a V10 engine with either 533bhp or 602bhp outputs.

The faster V10 Plus model covers 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and hits 205mph flat-out.

A new aluminium and carbonfibre chassis shared with the Lamborghini Huracan means it weighs 50kg less than its predecessor, but is 40 per cent

stiffer.

Standard LED lights at the front and rear feature a criss-cross design, while laser spot headlights that increase high-beam coverage to 600m in front of the car, are an option. The V10 model gets a smoother body and a pop-up spoiler at the rear, while the V10 Plus comes with a fixed rear wing, front splitter and diffuser made form carbon fibre. Ten exterior colours are available, including a new matt finish Camouflage Green, and while 19-inch wheels are standard, 20inch alloys are offered as an option for the first time.

Mercedes Benz C63 Mercedes C-class Coupe hits the gym Mercedes’ sleek new C 63 is positioned firmly to steal some of the BMW M4’s thunder. Arriving in March 2016, Mercedes are yet to release a price, but it is widely expected to be slightly more than the saloon, with the S variant coming in just shy of £70,000.

Mercedes says the only things the AMG coupe shares with its regular C-class models are the doors, roof and boot lid, with a fresh, more muscular body kit.

The AMG C63 AMG models both get substantial upgrades over the regular coupe, according to Mercedes. It sits a whole 64mm wider at the front, and 66mm at the rear; this allows Mercedes to fit 255/40 R18 tyres on the front, and 285/35 R18 boots at the rear, with the C63 S getting larger 255/35 R19 front and 285/30 R19 rear

tyres for increased traction.

Various muscular features will help identify the C63 from its regular C-class siblings, with the bonnet being 60mm longer and bulging with a power dome to fit all the turbo V8 plumbing in. A front splitter is designed to cut the air in order to reduce front-axle lift, while a discreet spoiler and rear diffuser trim rear-axle lift.

As an optional extra, a performance exhaust can be fitted to both models which comes with a buttonmodulated valve-opening feature, for those wanting the V8 soundtrack heard from miles around. One for extrovert show-offs...

Four driving modes are available on the C63 AMG Coupe, ranging from Eco to Sport+, with an individual setting. The C63 S model gets an extra ‘Race’ mode, too!

Rolls-Royce Dawn Revel in Dawn’s alluring presence

The Rolls-Royce Dawn has been revealed, and will reach the UK early next year.

The Dawn is the convertible version of Rolls-Royce’s Wraith Coupé. Its bodywork is 80% new compared with the Wraith, but its makers say it is just as quiet and refined as other Rolls-Royce models.

A soft-top folding roof features on the Dawn. It can be lowered in 21 seconds at speeds up to 30mph.

With the roof up, Rolls-Royce says the Dawn is just as quiet as the Wraith inside, and has dubbed it the quietest convertible on sale.

Design inspiration is said to have come from the 1952 Silver Dawn.

The Dawn is broadly similar to the Wraith in terms of dimensions, but weighs 200kg more, at 2560kg.

A new suspension system features on the Dawn, and Rolls-Royce claims it is the most rigid four-seat convertible on sale.

There is only one engine available - the same 6.6-litre twinturbocharged V12 which already features in the Rolls-Royce Ghost It produces 563bhp and 575lb ft, and power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Rolls-Royce says the Dawn can reach 62mph from a standing start in 4.9 seconds, and has a limited top speed of 155mph. Fuel consumption is rated at 19.9mpg,

with CO2 emissions of 330g/km.

Like other models in the Rolls-Royce range, the Dawn is luxuriously equipped. Among the highlights is the infotainment and navigation system, which is linked to the gearbox. The system is capable of using navigation data to select the most appropriate gear for the road ahead.

The Rolls-Royce Dawn will cost around £250,000 when it goes on sale early next year.

BMW 3 Series E-21, First Generation BMW E21 is the body designation for the first BMW 3 Series compact executive car, produced by the German automaker BMW from 1975 to 1983. This series was the immediate successor to the BMW 2002 and was superseded by the BMW E30.

Paul Bracq, Director of Design at BMW from 1970 to 1974, is credited with setting the design direction of the E21 3 Series, while Wilhelm Hofmeister is credited with first drawing the small forward wedge at the base of the C-pillar, a strong design trait of the first Three-series.

In 1975 Claus Luthe replaced Bracq and became the owner of the project.

At the E21’s release, three models were available: with 316 (1.6-litre), 318 (1.8-litre) and 320 (2.0-litre)

versions of the BMW M10 fourcylinder engine. To draw clear visual distinction within the new model series, the 320 models came with dual headlights, while the 315 - 316 and 318 had single round headlights.

At the end of 1975, the 320i was introduced; the engine was fitted with Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection, delivering 125 bhp (93 kW; 127 PS) on premium grade gasoline.

At the 1977 International Auto Show in Frankfurt, BMW unveiled its new variants of the E21, featuring the new six-cylinder M20 engines.

The four-cylinder 320 model was replaced with the 320/6, featuring a two-litre version of the M20 engine.

The 323i model was introduced, featuring 2.3 litres and 143 bhp (107 kW; 145 PS), empowering this car

with a top speed of approximately 190 km/h (118 mph). The braking system was also upgraded, with the 323i featuring disc brakes on all wheels.

Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations required larger bumpers, different headlight sets,

Is Bradley too honest for the sport of boxing?

A lot of boxing writers and commentators are currently trying to work out who will fill the PPV (pay-per-view) and pop culture void left by Floyd Mayweather following his retirement. It’s a valid question, as boxing has always had a figurehead (almost always American) during the modern TV era of the sport.

Many seem to think it may be the likes of Gennady Golovkin,

welterweight division. He showed slick skills and athleticism against the likes of Lamont Peterson, and Devon Alexander. He was the beneficiary of a gift decision against Manny Pacquiao, but that wasn’t his fault, and the resulting fall out seemed to encourage him to show his mettle even more.

He went toe to toe with Ruslan Provodnikov, a fighter who can be out boxed but few can out fight,

Canelo Alvarez, or Sergey Kovalev.

Only Terrence Crawford, another candidate, hails from the USA. But it’s hard not to feel sorry for a legitimate top ten pound for pound fighter currently active who has been unfortunately over looked for the vast majority of his career.

Timothy Bradley has an inspiring against the odds story. He beat Junior Witter, the Bradford born southpaw, with allegedly less than $20 left in the bank, to win his first world title. He has taken on a ‘who’s who’ of the light-welter and

winning a decision and suffering severe neurological problems in the aftermath. He then showed superb ring general ship to defeat the great Juan Manuel Marquez before losing his ‘0’ in a rematch against Pacquio.

Since then, he has performed well against Diego Chaves and at the time undefeated Jessie Vargas.

Bradley has decided to take the admirable choice to fight Brandon Rios next up, Rios fighting in a style reminiscent of Provodnikov who gave Bradley such problems before.

Boxing has paid Bradley well as he

is one of top ranks marquee names and he regularly features on PPV. Yet he has never become the cross-over star his talent and style deserve. In our multimedia age, perhaps the man who goes by the moniker ‘desert storm’ is too honest, open and self-effacing.

He is not prone to the bombast that brought the spotlight onto Mayweather.

My hope however, should he defeat

Brandon Rios [on 7 November], would be for Bradley to take on either Kell Brook or Amir Khan.

Particularly for Brook, the fight would raise both men’s profile in their opponents’ home country.

Brook is vaunted for his defeat of Shawn Porter and a defeat of Bradley could catapult him into global stardom. Similarly, Bradley dethroning and outclassing another top name would only add to his

legacy and perhaps remind those in the business that they still have a bona fide star in the spotlight who has shown no sign of hanging up his gloves.

I hope that Bradley, who has travelled for fights, taken on all comers as a champion, and continues to adopt a fan friendly style, becomes as widely known in the sporting world as his talent deserves.

United gunned down by The Gunners Two calamitous errors from Fabien Barthez gifted Thierry Henry two goals and Arsenal the points at a joyous Highbury. With Arsenal dominant but the game locked at 1-1, Barthez mis-hit a clearance straight to Henry to give his compatriot a simple finish.

United had taken an early lead through Paul Scholes but Freddie Ljungberg equalised before Henry struck twice in the last 10 minutes to move the Gunners up to third in the table.

However, it is Klopp’s time now.

No doubt he will be burdened with the unreasonable pressure of delivering, but that would come with any manager filling the boots of a Liverpool boss. Some may argue that he is a sublime fit for Liverpool as he is the man made with the unreasonable expectation.

Liverpool, a team more than any other in the country, have it within the club, the city and the fans, to aim higher than history has said.

The Reds can jump financial leaps and overcome the label of being

the ‘mid-table’ team. As we’ve seen before, when fans, players, managers and people of the city are on one side, something special is created at Anfield.

Songs are already being drafted, banners are being scripted and names are being printed on the back of football shirts. Klopp spoke of the importance of ‘emotion’ in football, if he transmits that to his players, the magic that can be created at Anfield, could be special.

At the moment, it doesn’t seem like there could have been a better fit for Liverpool than Klopp. Everything which has been said about him since his arrival in the press screams that he is the manager which Liverpool have been yearning for. But what if it doesn’t work out?

What if in three years’ time, they’re back in the same position with a different manager? Where do FSG go then? Surely there’s no better manager to appoint than Klopp.

Will the attention be turned to the owners? Many questions still left unanswered. If Klopp can’t win the title for Liverpool with the football landscape as it stands, then there’s a probability that no-one that can.

In saying all of the above, let’s take this opportunity in thanking Brendan Rodgers for his services at Liverpool. If only Stevie Gerrard didn’t slip that fateful day… who knows what could have been!

JURGEN KOP! Welcome to the Kop, Mr Klopp

Here it is then, the day which has glimmered such interest from their own fans and from fans of other clubs‌ Jurgen Klopp has finally arrived at the Kop to manage Liverpool.

During the final months of Brendan Rodgers’ reign at Anfield, many people were tricked into thinking this is not a talented group of players, and people were wondering how a simple breath of fresh air might spark Liverpool into life.

Klopp will provide far more than that, of course, and it is impossible not to wonder how the German coach will transfer his own philosophy to his new players. Working out precisely what his philosophy constitutes, however, is trickier than you might expect.
