Ol’ Skool Vs. New Skool

usic has proven to be a strong tie that combines the mind, body and soul together. From ol’skool music, such as Whitney Houston, Tupac, Run DMC, Diana Ross, Prince, The Jackson 5, The Temptations and several others to New Skool music such as Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Tyga, Justin Bieber, Alicia Keys and several others, each of these different genres and generations have influnced and impacted indiviuals and several ways The Mind is affected by music by how one thinks after hearing a certain songs. Romantic, love songs have the ablity to transform ones thinking by allowing them to think of ways to entertain and show his or her loved one how much they truely care

Naomi MzNay Bonman Journalist, Playwright, Script Writer/Film Director Founder and Editor in Chief of Sophisticated Urban Minds Contact: @MzNayBonman on Twitter

The body is affected by music by the way people love to get up and dance. The beat has the ablity to captiulate the movements of our arms, legs, head and hands. People dance in the shower, in front of the mirror, in the car, in the club and in church. Without music, some people would probably go crazy because of boredem Music affects the soul by how it makes one feel. One can feel free with music. Music allows people to release whatever is going within their soul. Music is poetry put to a certain beat, and poetry is compiled of different feelings and emotions that a person feels at the time. If you listen to any type of song, from the cleanist most melodic song to the most raunciest and degrading song, they each play out a story from that person’s perspective. Every person as a different story You can teel a lot about a person just by the music that they choose to listen to. People who are very creative often like a wide range of music, people who have a more dark side might tend to listen to more rock or emo music or music that is just different to the average person’s taste, and people who have are more carefree may tend to like music that gets their heart pumping and racing. There is music out there to fit all the different personalities that are in the world

READER REFLECTIONS/ COMMUNITY

What Does Music Mean to You Music is a powerful entity. It can not only affect your mind and body, but it can affect your soul! A lot of artist still to this day probably don’t understand the ramifications their songs and musical arrangements have shaped society. Ever since the beginning of time music has played a major part in the delivery of anything of importance and will continue to till the end of time (Matt. 24:31). When I listen to certain songs they affect me so strong, I almost can’t believe it was just written in general, and when an artist taps into the inner being and delivers at the maximum peak the only thing it can do is move you. With some of the greatest singers known to man dead now, it is almost without a shadow of a doubt leads me to believe that God is getting his theme music together for that special day of redemption. Can you imagine how that song will sound and the intensity it will be delivered!!!!!- Alfred Parker, San Bernardino, CA

It’s one of my calms during a storm. - Ei’ma Jenkins, Atlanta, GA Music for me is an outlet to this world of emotions. There is a song for every feeling, concern, emotion and hope. Turn on the music and your spirits are created based on what the lyrics are directing. Black music goes beyond R&B, to where slaves only had their voices and prayers for comfort and hope. Some days, still, we feel we are in need of that hope. I love music; it gets many of my days going!-Ericka Roshell, Riverside, CA Music is the international language that needs no teaching. It’s the subject that can bond for one moment the worst of enemies. Music is the key to unlock the true soul that is hidden within a person. Music to me is life; it’s the one thing besides my faith that truly helps me understand the meaning of happiness and my purpose on this earth. Music to me is more than rhyme or reason. Music is my testimony.-Marquee Musgrove, San Bernardino, CA

Music means a lot to me. If it wasn’t for that, I think I would go crazy in this world. It helps me out when I’m down and out and gets me dancing when I’m happy. You can’t go wrong with music.-Allen Brim, Riverside, CA Music is harmony of sound and emotion. It’s a bridge between those who vibe with similar sounds, all which have their own interpretation of its meaning, and how it makes them feel. It’s a medium to extend my own creativity. To me, music means more than sound and feeling. It’s why I do what I do, and often inspires how I do what I do and when I do it. For me, Music is more than music. It’s part of my life.-Phil Bailey, Moreno Valley, CA by the way of Portland, OR

Music is God’s gift to us. It’s the universal language of LOVE!-Ulondra McCarty Pomona, CA

LIVING OUT LOUD WITH MOCA in fear that I will come on too strong and run him away. I didn’t know this type of guy even existed and now I feel somewhat handicapped in how to approach the situation. What do you do when you finally meet the guy of your dreams? Dream Dating Tampa, FL

A.S

o, YOU prayed for him, YOU got him, and now YOU don’t know what to do with him. Well, let me tell you, God will give you EXACTLY what you ask for, that’s why people say, be specific in your prayers. The first thing you should do is ask God for discernment and make sure that ‘this guy’ is the one that God has for you. He just might be placed in your life to show you that the type of man you prayed for does exist. Take the time to evaluate your situation before you act.

Balancing Out Love and Life In life we desire to have the perfect job, the perfect car, the perfect house and the perfect mate. As we climb up the professional ladder and the mate is missing, we start to wonder when we will meet and who our “perfect” mate is

By NaKiesha “Moca” McDaniel

Q.

.Moca,

I think he’s the one. The guy that I’m talking to

is everything I’ve wanted in a man. I’ve never experienced a guy that is so in tuned with what I want and need. I have noticed how God has removed people from my life just for this guy. While, he seems to be everything I’ve prayed for, I’m scared. I don’t want to call him too much, I don’t want to see him too much, I don’t want to do anything too much

Now, if you have determined that ‘this guy’ is the one or at least worth the risk then I say go ‘ALL IN.’ I’ve recently learned that if you don’t completely take the risk not only are you wasting your time but you’re missing out on what could be a great relationship or at best a growth lesson. So, do what you feel, throw caution to the wind and take the risk to love outside of society and your friends/family. There are so many books, shows and even pamphlets that tell people how to get a significant other, how to maintain a relationship, even how to overcome a relationship. The BEST advice I can give you is DON’T pay attention to any of it. I think so many times we allow society as well as family and friends to dictate how we operate in a relationship. The book says once you get a number you should wait to call 2 days later. The show says that if you hold out on intimacy he will do what you want him to do. The pamphlet says that after a relationship you need to wait about 6 months before getting into a new one. MOCA says do what YOU feel. If you want to call him then do it. If you want to text him then do it. If you want to take him out then do it. There should be no rules in relationships because everyone is different. So, how can we expect the next guy to respond the same as the last guy if we are individuals? All I’m saying is there is no right or wrong way to act in a relationship. So, again MOCA says do what YOU feel. However, a young man by the name of Vawn once said, ‘Either you are a bad pick or a bad picker, which one are you?’ If you have not identified

who you are then there is a slim chance that any relationship will work. Make sure you are comfortable in your own skin, that you are secure in who you have become and aware of the path you are on for continued growth. Recognize that the choices you make are just that, YOUR choices, and should not be a reflection of what your friend said, some book told you, or something you saw on TV. As long as both parties that are involved in the relationship are able to communicate what they want, what they need, and expect then there is no reason the two of you can’t be happy LIVING OUT LOUD. MOCA

Q.

You never want to leave a friend out there dangling by him self. So, play the cards you were dealt. Friends are hard to come by so appreciate the ones you have and respect the friendship by adding to his life and welfare in a positive way. In short, don’t hesitate to LIVE OUT LOUD!!!!!! MOCA

MOCA

Here’s the situation. Some of my boys and I go out one night and we run into a mutual female friend. One of my friends is really digging her but she approached me. I didn’t take the bait because I think she’s a freak, she’s been with a few of my people, male and female. My friend however pursued her and now they’re dating. So, now I’m debating should I tell him that this chick is wilding out or do I just let the cards play out without showing my hand? Friend or Foe Philadelphia, PA

A.

WOW!!!! First of all let me just say this is a unique situation because you’re a guy. I usually hear about females having this type of conflict. It’s funny to think that guys have this same dilemma. To me, the answer is quite simple, if this guy is your “FRIEND” then you should tell him because wouldn’t you want to know. But if she is just one of many females he’s talking to then who cares if she’s not serious because it’s apparent that he’s not either. I think the real question is what position he plays in your life. I know guys talk and gossip just like women. So, if this female were wilding out as you described I would think you and your boys have already had, at least, one conversation about her. Especially if you say she has been with a few of them. Do these guys not run in the same circle? If any of this is true then I’m sure your friend already knows the deal with miss lady. If it’s not true then I will definitely say be careful of your delivery and approach to the situation.

If you are unsure of your ‘friend’s’ intentions with this female, trend lightly. Determine the best way to tackle the situation. Is he the type that needs to see it for his self to believe it’s true, does he always get the leftovers when it comes to females, or is he level headed and thinks things through. Only you know, so take into account what you know and make sure your ‘friend’ is aware of the situation he has gotten his self in.

Daddy’s Little Girl By NaKeisha “Moca” McDaniel It’s hard to compete with him. He’s showed me unconditional love for 32 years. He’s influenced who I am today. He’s supplied all of my earthly needs and just about all my wants. His outgoing personality and his way of being a loving person in a blunt way has been reflected in me. Most people that know him call him Tony Mac or “The Man.” I’m lucky enough to call him “DADDY.” When I was a little girl my dad was always the one that was off when I was out of school during the week. And each time our daddy and daughter day would consist of a day at the Birmingham Zoo. However my mom combed my hair the day before he would just brush it up and off we went to see the animals. At the time I never thought anything about going to the zoo all the time, what I did remember is spending time with my daddy. I remember my dad being home for dinner and all of us sitting at the table eating together every night of the week. I remember my dad taking us on family vacations every summer and making sure my sister and I enjoyed every moment of it. I remember my dad escorting me during Homecoming my Senior year (I was Miss Science Club...lol) I remember my dad taking me to his Alma Mater, Alabama A&M University and introducing me to everybody from the Dean of my school to the lady in the business office that would be taking care of my account, as he helped me register to follow in his footsteps. I remember my dad coming to speak to my college friends and classmates during the Youth Motivation Task Force Week. I can remember my friends all telling me how cool my dad was, as if I didn’t know. :-) I can remember my dad telling one of my boyfriends, if you can’t give her what I can give her and more it’s not going to last because this is what’s she is use to I can remember my dad taking me to get my first vehicle. My dad and I share 32 years of memories and unforgettable moments. My father is not only the “Head of the Household” but he is my Dad. He is the man that taught me about men. He is the man that showed me the definition of a man. He is the man that I got my outgoing personality from. He is the man that reminds me of my worth. He is the man that spoiled me. He is “THE MAN” and I’m lucky enough to call him DADDY. I LOVE YOU, TONY MCDANIEL, MORE THAN WORDS CAN EVER TELL!!!!!

THE ADVOCATE

Support in Building a Humanitarian Generation Start making change around you; show some love and kindness, don’t be left out when others help to improve life’s of many unprivileged in society today By Jude Nebo

In the world seen, Christian believers always preach the word of God according to Holy Bible description exposing all about Heaven and earth from the Beginning to the end.According to the Bible, loving one another should be limitless because you’re lifted in lifting others.

everything. Yes, the liberal man shall be rich! By watering others, he waters himself (Proverbs 11:2425).

You are a human being that is privileged to live in the great 21st century on planet earth, so why are you waiting around and not stepping up to the plate in making our world a better place by giving to those who are in a greater need than you.

It’s not enough to live long; it’s what you live for that really matters. There are those who lived for more than a hundred years, but made no impact in the lives of those around them; There was just nothing significant about their lives. They really didn’t contribute to their society; always taking never giving back.

It is possible to give away and become richer! It is also possible to hold on too tightly and lose

Are you contributing positively to the advancement of the lives of those around you? This is a question SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 14

you must ask yourself and truthfully answer. Choose to live a meaningful life. One that will make the world move forward, touching the lives of others in a positive way. Be a blessing to others, and you will always be lifted, for you are lifted as you lift others! Your promotion is in promoting others. Your success is discovered when you help others become successful. You will never discover the treasure God has kept in you until you reach out to help someone else become something. That is where real joy is! This is because the liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. (Proverbs 11:25). God will make happen for you what you make happen for others. So keep helping those around you stand strong and tall; help them discover their Godgiven potentials; be a part of their success story. If you’re an employer, help those in your employ realize their dreams for success. In the same way, as an employee in an organization, be diligent; commit yourself to improving that organization. Make progress of that organization. Make the progress of that organization your priority, for in her prosperity shall you also prosper. If we want the next generation to prosper and to be successful, we as an older generation must start installing great values in our children so that they will grow up to be wise. The wise verse says to Train up a child in the way that he or she shall go and as he or she gets older, he or she will now depart from it.

What are you doing for your community? How are you helping to give back to the world? We want to know Email us at editor@ summag-urban.com

or people of puritanical perspectives and judge-a-book-byits-cover principle, Nollywood actress-cumproducer, Rukky Sanda is somewhat bohemian, a pierced tongue, a tattoo of her name in Arabic and gilt-edged makeover that had given her form and features an exotic veneer, coupled with her penchant for expressing personal views that are construed as a bit to the left; it is easy to conclude that the Ikorodu, Lagosborn actress is “a good girl gone bad”. What’s more, she’d been involved in caustic controversies - romantically linked with American pop star, Akon, in 2007, she was the epicenter of a cosmetic surgery hullabaloo in 2011. In a recent interview, an effervescent Rukky Sanda debunks popular preconceptions about her. In her world, there are no taboo subjects, love, boyfriend and marriage, tattoos and body piercing, religion and obsessions - ask a bold question and she bluntly tells you the barefaced true. Lest you are taken aback by her forthrightness, she

Island Goddess By Jude Nebo

forewarns: I can be very blunt. What is the secret of your good looks? There is really nothing to it. I try to keep it simple What about your beauty routine? I used to have a beauty routine, but now I don’t, because I am here today and next day I am there, I am all over, I don’t really have a routine. I just take my shower, rest, do my work, rest, play and have a lot of lovely people around me. SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 18

There was a rumour that you did a cosmetic surgery, how did you feel when you heard such? Like I said before, I will say it again. I don’t have anything against plastic surgery; we all own our bodies and we can do whatever we choose to do with our bodies. When I heard the rumour, I didn’t attach any relevance to it because to me it’s no big deal. When I newly came into the industry, I heard such things and wonder why people will say such about me, but now I don’t care In other words, you can go to any length to take care of your body as long as it suits you? Yes, I am saying as a human being, whatever makes you feel comfortable is what you should do There was a rumour sometime in the past that you once had an affair with Akon? That rumour was since 2007 and five years after, people are still talking about it. What was your growing up like? I had the best growing up experiences. I didn>t have any problem. I thank God that I am blessed. I am from Ikorodu here in Lagos. My childhood was a blissful one. We were having party every time. I am still a party person. At what point did you become conscious of the fact that you were attractive to men? When I was a teenager, in JS 1 or 2. Can you remember an instance of this and what your reaction was? I cannot really remember, but it was normal stuff, like we used to mime and do all those things, and boys were always around. When was the first time you decided to explore a relationship? That was in SS 1 when I got my first boyfriend And you are proud of that? What’s wrong with it? In those days, everybody had a boyfriend in the secondary school I went to. You cannot compare the relationship of those days to the kind of sophisticated things we have now; then, it was more of likeness, not love or anything serious. It’s more of hanging out and reading together. Life was less complicated then. You can’t compare that to what we call relationship of nowadays. What did you learn from your first relationship? I learnt that regardless of what you do or feel for this person, always be true to yourself, just be you, if the person likes you for you, fine but if you have to be something else in order to please him, then it doesn’t

make sense. What’s the best advice given to you and who gave you the advice? My mum told me to be true to myself “because at the end of the day only you matter. If you are not true to yourself, then it’s as good as having nothing. She also said: Always remember where you come from, don’t let anybody make you feel you don’t deserve what you have because you have been comfortable all your life. The name Rukky sounds exotic, not many people believe that your Rukky is derived from the Islamic name Rukayatu? If you come to my house and ask of Rukayat, nobody will know who you are asking after, because from my primary school days, I don>t think anybody knew me as Rukayat; I have always been addressed as Rukky, that>s what I grew up being called, it is not like I woke up one day and decided to change my name. Even my parents call me Rukky. I don>t think I have any family member that has ever called me Rukayat. What’s your philosophy of life? Live life, work hard to achieve all that you have wanted to, people look at acting as easy, it>s actually the most difficult thing considering the fact that people go to work at 7 a.m. and come back by 5 p.m., but while acting you could stay and shoot overnight. For example, when I am working I don>t sleep; if at all I do, it will be from the hours of 3 a.m. to 7a.m. especially now that I am either writing or producing. I even write my scripts myself; even If I get a director, I want it to be exactly the way I envisaged it, so for me its multi-tasking. No matter Contiuned on page 20 SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 19

how many people are working for you, you are going to do your thing, because if anything goes wrong, it’s your name that will be called; after all, the film is mine. As a Muslim do you have any reservation marrying outside your faith? I don’t, I will marry whoever I want to; it’s my life. Don’t you think your parents will object? It is a free world, do whatever you want. How religious are you? I am very religious, God first. How do you relate with God? I pray to God and He answers. I can pray 10 times a day if I want to. Do you understand Yoruba? Of course. When are you going to do a Yoruba film? I don’t know how to read Yoruba, basically if my script is given to me in English, translated, I can say it in Yoruba. I don’t know how to read Yoruba. But I am going to do a Yoruba film proper someday. With benefit of hindsight, what past mistake or action will you love to correct? Anything we do in life, we learn from it. I remember when I finished secondary school, what I wanted was to travel to America. But my dad refused. I was already in LASU, I had two very close friends of which one was in LASU; they travelled to America so I also told my dad I wanted to travel to America. My father did not even answer me until I threatened that I would not go to school again if I didn’t go to America. Yet my dad never agreed. I think it’s something I would have regretted. Why did you say so? It didn’t occur to me then that I had to do TOEFL and other exams to go to America. I probably would have gone there and danced in music videos. That was what I wanted to do. That is something I would have regretted. At times God does things for you at the right time. He gives you something way better than what you desire. I cannot imagine myself living in America now, though I travel there but I have never stayed for more than one month.

Banking and Finance How long did it take you to get into the university? That was like immediately, most of us in my family wrote JAMB twice starting from SS 2 and then SS 3, it was like a preparation. My first admission was in UNILAG where I was studying English because Unilag resumed first, but I wanted to study Banking and Finance which I had the chance to do in LASU. What secondary school did you attend? I went to Lagos State Model College. That’s the same school Funke Akindele went to, her dad was the principal at the time but we didn’t know each other then. Which country are you looking forward to travelling too soon? Ghana. Why Ghana? I have never been to an African country except South Africa so I would really be excited to go to Ghana. Aside Ghana, I want to go to Cape Rula Island of which I don’t want to go alone, I want to go with a group and all I need do is to open a BB group Cape Rula Island and ask who wants to go. How active are you on Twitter and Facebook? I am more on Twitter than Facebook because everybody sees your post on Facebook, whether the person is your friend or not if I open my Facebook page you will see ridiculous things. I don’t bother reading them but I do scan through. In fact my Facebook is weird because I have like over 20, 000 friend requests which I can’t go through but with Twitter, all you need do is to follow, which doesn’t need approval from the other party, once you follow you can see all the messages, but it is not all that I can reply because it is not all that I see but I reply those I see, people still accuse me of not replying their tweets.

Going to America and back what are the things that gives you culture shock? I like American life, it’s very interesting and I have a lot of friends over there. What did you study in LASU? SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 20

Breaking the Cycle: Youth Violence

By Naomi MzNay Bonman

Y

oung people are supposed to feel safe, when they have to constantly look over their shoulder you can tell how times have changed. We are losing our babies each and every day to senseless violence. If this does not stop, there will not be much of a NEXT generation; we cannot keep killing off the future. According to the CDC, in 2004 more than 750,000 young people were treated in the emergency room because of an act of violence. 75% of students are victimized each school year, and out of that 75%, 100,000 young people miss school for a fear of being bullied each day. Young people say they feel trapped. Young people are bullied because they are different from the rest of the crowd, or it can even be over basic things such as another girl was talking to another girl’s boyfriend, or another student didn’t like the way he/she was looked at.

All these little pity things build up into bigger issues, which is when you start to have school shootings. Weapons are of an easy access today for young people than they were several years ago.

problem of youth violence is that parents do not understand or know about the type of violence that is going on in school. Parents don’t know until the last minute and that’s when they start to ask their kids questions; however, parents need to ask their kids what is going on at school on a daily basis. A parent is not going to know that his/her child is going through a rough time unless he/she asks the child. The second reason why this is a rising issue is because young people have no one to talk to about their problems. These young people are getting bullied, their grades are starting to slip, and they have no one there to help them. According to the young people in the video, it takes a teacher, friend and parent to make them succeed. Everyone has to be able to work together. If the young person does not have a parent he/she can talk to, I’m sure there is a Photo credit: Google Images legal guardian or some other adult relative that he/she can talk to. According to a video on Youtube called Behind If we want our young people to still be our School Walls, many of the young people interviewed future then we as an older generation need in the video said that know someone in a gang and to step up to the plate and lead our young that they were even asked at some point to join. people in the right direction. The first step to accomplishing that is to talk to them; be I wanted to get a young person’s perspective of someone’s mentor. Our young people need us, why the issue of youth violence is still a problem, they can’t survive on their own. so while watching the video I picked up a few interesting facts. Introduce Designer Camielle Jeanay

I

By Calvin McDaniel

’ve had the opportunity to meet several talented people in the Detroit area as it pertains to the fashion industry, and it never ceases to amaze me that many of them are aspiring designers. One of which is a young 24-year-old motivated and determined young lady by the name of Camille Jeanay. Ms. Jeanay was born and raised on the west side of Detroit. Her desire and dreams to become a fashion designer were initiated at the tender age of 11, when she was given a choice by her Mother of choosing between a sewing class and a cooking class; Ms Jeanay chose sewing, and her passion for the art began. Ms. Jeanay attended Southfield-Lathrup high school and is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a degree in Applied Arts. While attending Central Michigan University, she founded the organization called Sophisticated Women of Color at CMU, which is the one of the largest women’s organizations on campus. She has been designing clothes since her high school days, starting with custom made jersey dresses. Her career has blossomed into designing clothes that target women from the ages of 16 to 40. With a wide array of designs, she has had the pleasure of having her designs showcased in over 20 different shows of the last few years which include: Motor City Rip the Runway, an organization for Black Unity’s annual fashion show entitled, Evolution of Fashion, Threads Fashion Show,

Detroit Fashion Week 2007, Mercedes Fashion Week. The Jeanay clothing line will soon be in stores in the metro Detroit area, (Simply Casual in Detroit and Amor De Moda in Royal Oak). As I talked with Ms. Jeanay, it became very apparent that she loves what she does and is extremely driven and confident in her abilities. She has also created an organization called the Prom Fashion Tour. I asked her what the goal of this organization is. Important programs have been dismissed through Detroit Public Schools. Most schools don’t have choir, dance, art, things that help keep the creative mind flowing and I wanted to do something to get the students involved in something. It’s to help the kids become more confident with themselves, knowing how to dress, what looks right on the different body types. Basically we give them training, choreography and we put on a huge production for them. With many of the schools this was the first time they even had a production in their auditoriums in years because they no longer have a theatre program. “We make them feel special for that day, they get their hair and makeup done and they get a chance to be seen and heard through fashion,” she stated. She goes on to say that, “Afterwards we have a SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 34

Designer Camielle Jeanay photo shoot for vitamin water and Christian Dior. Tickets are sold at the event and a portion of that money goes back to the schools to pay for field trips and books, any repairs and things that the students may need.” Ms Jeaney and I had a chance to talk about her career and her views on the state of the fashion industry here in the Detroit area. Q: What drives you, and inspires you the most as a designer? A. My mother is my biggest inspiration. She has always been there for me, always at every show, giving me new ideas. I love how she’s not afraid to voice her opinion... Q. What message do you hope to convey with your clothing, and is it a message that speaks to every age group? A. I want to convey that you can be sexy, classy, trendy, and timeless. When you wear my pieces, you feel like «ok where’s the paparazzi with their cameras because I’m ready for a close up». I want for every woman to feel fly. Some pieces can be worn during the day for work and then transitioned for happy hour or a date. The age group I usually shoot for are from the ages of 16-32. It’s for people

who are confident with themselves. Q. Can you tell me what is the most frustrating part about making people see your vision for fashion here in Detroit, and is it hopeless when it comes to putting Detroit on the map in a major way? A. The most frustrating thing here is that, everyone wants to be a designer, model, photographers, but doesn’t want to put in the work. I can’t respect a person to just throw their logo on some jeans and say “here’s my line”. Let’s be real, Detroit is NOT a fashion capitol, so it will take some time for people to notice the talent here. Finding the talent here though is like a diamond in the rough...so it’s going to take some time for that. Another frustrating part about making people see my vision for fashion here in Detroit is that we don’t have a lot of people that appreciate the art of fashion. They particularly only care for what’s trending. So when people see my work they think, “Oh that’s amazing,” but will I be bold enough to pull this look off...probably not. So it’s frustrating for me to deliver my art in Detroit because I have to tone it down just to get actual buyers. Follow up to Q3. Is it common for designers in Detroit to put their logo\ label on preContiuned on page 36 SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 35

manufactured clothing and claiming the clothing as their own design, and if so is that one of the main hindrances of the Detroit market gaining respect in the national fashion community? A. Oh yes. I’ve seen it at fashion shows in Detroit before. I don’t think they’re making money because it’s not their passion. When you go into a business just for the money, you’re not going to make money because your heart is in the wrong place. Q. How do show promoters allow these type of bogus designs to be displayed in their runway shows, is it all about the money? Can you stick it out here in Detroit as a designer or is the mentality here unconductive to great success?

show, you’re still trying to establish yourself and get people aware of your product. I’m transitioning from the designer paying to be in shows to the designer that’s actually making money. Models and photographers are not necessarily the only people in this industry NOT making money. Detroit is not doomed to being labeled as a trade market. There will be a day when these talent trades are going to mean something. Calvin: Having the chance to meet and talk with Ms Jeanay was a great pleasure. Her views on designing and her opinions on the state of the fashion industry in Detroit were frank and honest. Ms. Jeanay looks to be well on her way to great success, with a bright future in the world of fashion.

A. If I’m trying to be completely successful within Photo credit: One of this industry, I’m going to have to branch out to different cities. I believe that I can conquer the city Jeanay’s designs and be comfortable with that, but as far as gaining full appreciation for my fashions across the globe just from here, not a chance. I hear it all the time from Brian Heath and my mother that I do need to get to a different city and show them what I have to offer. Q. Why do you think we are so far behind in the industry, and what’s it going to take to change that? A. We are so far behind because nobody wants to help anybody. We all want the money, success, and fame for ourselves. We are also going to need a mass production company. Q. Is it fair to say that promoters and designers in Detroit are the only people making any money? I’ve talked with a number of models & photographers that have voiced their frustration with the inability to make a dollar in this industry. I know models and photographers are trying to make a name for themselves in the industry so they resort to trading services, so do you think models should wear the clothing of designers and walk in shows of promoters without seeing some kind of compensation? Is the Detroit market doomed to be labeled as a trade for market? A. I know it’s primarily the promoters that make money. When you think about it, the designers are paying to be in the shows worth being in. Other shows are ridiculously ghetto, unorganized and a complete waste of time...those shows need designers, so they’ll let anyone in for free. Yes, it’s free, but you get nowhere with it. In my opinion, you haven’t quite made it yet if you’re paying to be in a show. Usually, when you’re paying to be in a

Staying in Sync LATOCHA SCOTT

THE SOPHISTICATED URBAN MINDS INTERVIEW

By Curl J. Louis Take a journey with me down memory lane, "Just Kickin' It" with this R&B sensation, and get some ."Understanding" to what she has been up to

SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 49

I

have been fortunate and blessed to have been able to conduct interviews with new and upcoming artist of this generation, but recently I had the extreme pleasure to interview an artist that I grew up with as a boy that found himself captivated by her smooth, sultry and sensational voice. I am talking about LaTocha Scott, a former group member of the 90’s R&B divas Xscape. She has taken some time away from the game, but she has never stopped being a student of the game that she grew up with and loved since she first blessed us with her presence. Take a journey with me down memory lane, “Just Kickin’ It” with this R&B sensation, and get some «Understanding» to what she has been up to. Sophisticated Urban Minds (SUM): For some of those who may not know, or are too young to remember who you are, can you take a moment to remind them who LaTocha Scott is? LaTocha Scott: Well as you know my name is LaTocha Scott i am a former member of the legendary 90’s R&B group Xscape. I am a mother, sister, friend, mentor and singer/songwriter SUM: You have encountered much musical success early on with the group Xscape. How was that experience early on in your career? LS: It was a good learning experience for us all, at many times challenging and having to embrace the traveling and hard work, but it was worth it as it opened doors for us and allowed us to meet many people. SUM: In your days with Xscape you co-wrote countless hit singles from “Do Like Lovers Do” to “Who Can I Run to.” What was that feeling like to hear songs you wrote have much success? LS: Was a great feeling just to hear a song that you was on get played on the radio was good in itself. There were a lot of high fives amongst everybody, and it was a happy feeling to be able to have people embrace the words that you wrote. SUM: On your finale tour with Xscape, what was the feeling that the group you had much success in the 90’s that this would be the last time y’all would perform together? LS: I never thought about it being the last time I would perform with my sisters. We were young, naive and females in a male driven industry. We

had some internal issues with the business side of things, but we still had a great support system. After the last performance it gave me time to explore and find out who LaTocha Scott was, and also time to reflect on life and write. SUM: Are there any plans for songs in the work to reunite you with any of your former group members? LS: I would love the chance to be able to work with my sisters again, and as you mentioned it’s something I’ve been asked many times; will there ever be an Xscape reunion. I would never dismiss the chance to record or perform with them again, as I still keep in touch with them. Hopefully it’s a work in progress that can happen, and my sister Tamika we talk all the time and she is ‘always game’ as she says. SUM: On your 1st solo album “Solo Flight 404” what was that feeling like that this was your 1st album as a solo artist, and not that of a group? LS: It was very different and at the same time it was fun knowing that this was my baby, and this to me was more of a street album. SUM: You have been featured on songs that you have co-written from Chante’ Moore, Trick Daddy, J-Shin and Bow Wow. How does it feel when another artist reaches out to you for a song? LS: To me it’s overwhelming at the same time flattering. I just think to myself that ‘you want me’ ‘yes sure I’ll do it’. It’s amazing when another artist you respect in the game reaches out to you and wants to do a song with you. SUM: As a singer/songwriter that many of us that grew up on female R&B singers in the 90’s How do you reflect on the female singers now when you hear their songs? LS: I’m excited to see that Brandy and Monica are back to bring real music back again. Back in the 90’s if you couldn’t sing you would get booed off stage in an era where there wasn’t any auto tune to help you out. But it’s good to hear not just good R&B singing, but female artists staying true to their music. SUM: What would be some advice that you would give to a female artist inspiring to come in and grow in this music industry, and experience longevity? LS: Not to think or believe that success will come overnight. You have to stay true to your craft, the passion, and most importantly yourself. The fame, SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 42

money and respect will come if you hold true to those three things. SUM: Are there any artist preferably female artist already established, or upcoming that you would be willing to work with on your album or any upcoming projects? LS: There are a few females that i wouldn’t mind working with, but i want my fans and music lovers to buy my album for me and not the names featured on my album. I wouldn’t mind working with Alicia Keys for her passion she brings to her music, and Nicki Minaj for her unique style she brings to the music. SUM: Your new solo single “Bad Timing” what inspired you to make this song, and release this as your 1st single? LS: This is a song that anybody can relate to in all stances in their life. Just like the songs says “Bad Timing” you can meet somebody in life and it seems that the timing is bad rather they are in a relationship, or you both are in different parts in

your life in your careers. This song was inspired to me by my twitter fans, having talks with my friends, and even my son was like mommy you need to come back out. SUM: You have your own record label Golden Gyrl Music which is overseen by Biv Global Media. What made you start your own label instead of join a label that has already made a name for itself? LS: I became a student to the game and the industry. I wanted to eliminate the middle man always knowing where my money was coming and going. Ludacris said it best «sign yourself to yourself and start writing your own checks» SUM: In light of your own record label you have launched Golden Gyrl Foundation a foundation which enlightens on developing and magnifying self-love and self-esteem. What came about for you to start this foundation? LS: By always having young girls around me I found myself mentoring them in life about the

SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 43

importance about sisterhood. By talking to them, helped them find things out about not only their self, but about myself as well. SUM: In 2005 you caught a bit of the acting bug when you played in “Fair Game,” a romantic comedy. What was that experience like for you and is it something you could see yourself doing again? LS: I was very new to the acting scene and I found myself liking it and enjoying it very much. It’s very much different from going into the studio and recording a song. Acting takes weeks of preparation from traveling to learning your lines, and your character. SUM: Are there any upcoming tour dates in the future for Ms. LaTocha Scott that fans can catch to be reminded of the sultry R&B singing? LS: I’m always doing shows in my cit; the stage is my life. I love connecting with the crowd wherever I’m at. I could be coming to a city near you. SUM: I was just about to ask you seeing how we have a big music event called Essence Music Fest during 4th of July weekend LS: Yes I’ll be there. I might not be performing, but I’ll be there supporting the artist there, doing autograph sessions with the fans and doing some interviews. SUM: I’ll make sure to come to the Convention Center or catch you in one of the Super Lounges for Essence LS: (laughs) make sure you do that, and make sure you’re like “Hey it’s me Curl!” SUM: (laughs) Okay I’ll make sure to do that! SUM: Are there any producers that you are currently working with or would like to work with? LS: There are some new producers that I’m working with, and just how I was a new artist who had people that supported me, I want to give back and give somebody else the shine I was given. I want people to get the album and love the album, and as you’re listening to the songs scrolling through the inside, you’re like “Wow! That’s Hot! Who did this track?” SUM: I heard a remix of you on two rap songs (same damn time remix, nobody’s perfect great Xscape remix) spitting some nice bars. Is that something we can hear on your upcoming CD or even a future mixtape per say?

LS: (laughs) I had to show the younger ones I still got it, and that I’m very versatile with my music. SUM: When I heard the tracks I was like ‘Wow that’s her didn’t know she had that in her!’ LS: (laughs) Well thank you, yes that’s me and I’am going to release some free musi, a mixtape called “Truth in Da Booth” coming out in June. I want to give my fans some music before the album comes out. SUM: Do you reach out to your fans on any social networking sites, if so how can your fans be able to follow LaTocha Scott? LS: I’m always on twitter (@Latochascott) I have to keep up with what’s going on. When I’m in the studio I like to let my fans know what’s going on, and what I’m up to. Some of my fans are like ‘Is this really you?’ and I reply to them ‘Yes it’s me.’ You can even catch me on Instagram posting pics (@iamlatocha) SUM: Before I let you go and get back on your studio grind, what are somethings you would like to say to your fans who have followed you since day one till now? LS: Thank you so much! I appreciate the love and support that y’all have given me; it has kept me going just thank you! SUM: Well on behalf of Sophisticated Urban Minds Magazine, I would like to say thank you for taking the time to allow me this exclusive interview with you. LS: I want to say thank you for taking the time and wanting to do this interview with me. Take care and thank you again.

ARTS EDUCATION: WHY IT IS NEEDED By Tamara Jackson “Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.” –Lyndon Johnson, on signing into existence the National Endowment on the Arts “The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create.” –President Barack Obama Since the beginning of time, the arts have been a significant part of human existence. It is art that teaches us the most about the people who lived hundreds of years before us. We learn culture, language, religion and society; however, the arts still tend to fall at the bottom of the totem poll in the educational system. The arts budget is always the first budget to be cut. Time and time again, studies have proven what a positive impact the arts have on students. They excel in other areas of study. “Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skill. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration,

confidence, and teamwork. A 2005 report by the Rand Corporation about the visual arts argues that the intrinsic pleasures and stimulation of the art experience do more than sweeten an individual’s life -- according to the report, they ‘can connect people more deeply to the world and open them to new ways of seeing,’ creating the foundation to forge social bonds and community cohesion.” Could you imagine a world with no music, no dance, no theatre, and no paintings? How do we express ourselves. It would be a dark and depressing world. Imagine having to live day by day with the same pressures and stress of society with no outlet. We are leaving something behind. Something that is beautiful. Without the arts, our children are just robots quoting important facts and solving mathematics. To take away a child’s imagination and creativity is to take away his voice. SOURCES http://www.edutopia.org/arts-music-curriculumchild-development

UTE Media Productions Creator Discusses the Freelance Writing Business

By Shannon Morris

“Self-promotion is not being boastful or arrogant, and it is way better than no promotion. Also, resumes can be inflated with great sounding words and phrases, but seeing your work gives people an idea of your writing style. As writers, rejection is an inevitable part of their business.

T

he ability to work at your own pace and write about what you want is every writer’s dream! There is no greater feeling in the world than writing about topics you are passionate about, and voicing your opinion. Seeing your article and your name in print is like the icing on the cake! Freelance writing is a genre and market that is growing steadily, because it offers a flexibility that attracts writers from different professional backgrounds. Most importantly, freelance writing is a business, and must always be treated as such! “I would like to usher in a “new era’ of writing styles. Simply put, it is very rewarding, because I get to bring to life all the wild and crazy thoughts, ideas and stories in my head and get paid for it,” says Alabama native Kelvin Williams, who is the creator of the company UTE Media Productions and offers services such as ghostwriting, editing, and screen/ play writing. Kelvin, who earned his B.A from Alabama A & M University, explains why the “show, don’t tell” statement also transcends over to the freelance business. He feels that all writers should have their own website and a portfolio besides just having a resume, in order to visually showcase their skills rather than telling people about it.

Your work will not be accepted by everyone. Kelvin continues, “Some will love it, some will hate it, but the bottom line is once people see your talent and time put in, you will be respected.” Freelance writing is considered one of the easier (and more lucrative) creative fields to break into, but it requires a lot of patience, diligence, and dedication to develop a product. In order to perfect your craft, you must sit down, and write!“ Keep writing and networking. The most important part of writing is to let no one tell you that there is not a market for your writing. If you maintain your professionalism and write from the heart, there is a market for you,” Kelvin says.UTE Media Productions is breaking ground to become the next major media entity such as, Turner Broadcasting, Peachtree TV, BET, and TV One. Kelvin currently resides in Atlanta, GA and is the author of “Book of Roses, Rainclouds, & Reflections” and the screenplay “Kinship.” You may go to Kelvin’s website at http://www. utemediaproductions.com to find more information on his services. Haters: Who They Are

A

By Shannon Morris

true “hater” is someone who doesn>t want to see others succeed, and has that “crabs in a barrel” mentality to try and put others down because of their own insecurities. This person refuses to acknowledge the accomplishments of others and wants other people to be miserable. This person intentionally tries to find flaws in others, while completely overlooking their good qualities. Most people know someone who always has something negative to say about other people, you know- that one person who goes out of their way to make rude and unnecessary comments about peoplewhether he/she knows them or not. The more successful you are, the more haters you should have. The more you have going for yourself, the more some people are going to want to drag you down- that>s just how it is. Like Katt Williams said, “If you have someone hating on you right now you better think of how to get five more people hating by Christmas. You need haters to make you stronger.. without haters most people wouldn>t try to become better. Just tell them you just hate me because you can>t be me.» Always remember, there is a difference between being honest, and just being a hater, and it>s a very thin line. A person has the right to express his or her opinion about a person and be honest about their feelings, but when they start to make comments that are irrelevant and uncalled for, they are considered haters. For example, calling someone out of their name is the main tactic a hater may use to express their thoughts.

a positive outcome. As a result, it is seen as a good thing to have haters because it means that you must be doing something right for people to even have your name in their mouths. This strategy is used as a motivational tool to help people deal with difficult, negative people since there are people out there. On the other side of the book, we have those people think EVERYONE is a hater because they don>t see the world through their eyes. This isn>t using the strategy properly; it>s just being delusional.Have you ever met someone so obnoxious and conceited that they think everyone is a hater and jealous of them because they think they have so much going for themselves? Why Every Woman Needs to Get the HPV Vaccine

W

hen it comes to today’s young women and health, the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine is on the top of the list. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States. The CDC states that 50% of sexually active people will have genital HPV some time in their lives. There are over 40 different types of HPV that can infect the genitals, mouth and throat in both male and female. Most people do not know that they are infected. HPV is passed through genital contact. It is most commonly transmitted during vaginal and anal sex but it can also be passed during oral sex. Most people do not develop symptoms or health problems from HPV. Research has found that the body’s immune system will clear it naturally within two years. Certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in both male and females. Although it is rare, warts can also appear in the throat causing Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis or RRP. Other types of HPV can cause abnormal cells which can lead to cancer such as cervical cancer. The CDC says that cervical cancer is the easiest cancer to prevent. Regular screening tests and follow-ups can help prevent or find it early. The Pap

test (or Pap Smear) is one test that helps find precancers and cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if not treated. The HPV test checks for the virus that causes these changes on the cervix. There is no routine screening tests for HPV related diseases. However, you should visit your doctor regularly for check-ups. HPV vaccines are available for males and females. Currently, the most popular vaccine is Gardisil which also protects against most genital warts. Cervarix is another vaccine that is available. Both of these vaccines are recommended for girls between the age of 11 and 12 and females between the ages of 13 through 26. The vaccine is given in three doses over time. It is recommended that the same vaccine brand be used for all three doses. Gardisil is also available for boys and men between the ages of 9 through 26. Important Information about Gardisil Gardisil may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. Gardisil does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. For more information on prevention and treatment, please visit the CDC and Gardisil websites. SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 54

Past Sexual Encounters: Do They Matter By Curl J. Louis

I

always believed that this was a question that should never be asked or answered, not because I had anything to hide, but never fully understood why asking or answering this question would solve. Always looking at it from two point of views, one being that when you ask me the number of sexual partners I have had and I tell you a number that you feel is too low, you may look at me and think that I was lying to you about how many people I did or didn’t have sex with causing another topic to arise of you trusting me. The second being that if the number I told you was too high in your opinion again the thought of infidelity will begin to surface in your mind, and furthermore having you think about our sexual encounters leaving you to think was I thinking about you, or was I thinking about somebody else from my past that was on my mind. I do believe that it is important to know your partners sexual well being when it comes to knowing if your partner may have encountered any STD’s during their sexual exploits, but knowing the number of people they did or didn’t have sex with will not help you determine that. If they had sex with one person they can still be at a higher risk as that of somebody who slept with 40 or more people, because an STD knows no number. To look at things in a different perspective, how do you judge that a person’s number is to low or too high? Is there a formula to calculate this, or is it just a judgment call compared to the number of people you have or haven’t had sex with? I had a conversation on Facebook with a young woman, Shana Pyburn, and she said that being married and knowing her husband’s sexual past didn’t matter to that of the amount just as long as he was safe about it, and didn’t mind getting tested for her. Now I could understand where she was coming from because it wasn’t the number that mattered to her it was her husband’s sexual safety, as well as hers that mattered.

She also went on to say, “If the man understands how your feeling and is willing to teach, learn and allow you to explore and learn together then why should the past matter, and be bought into the present where it can only cause issues.» In my opinion, that was a very valid point because in most cases the past should never be mentioned in your present because it may cause unwanted problems for and in your future. Also not to mention do you truly want to know the number of sexual partners your significant other has had over the years rather it be low or high of a number, because in the back of your mind you will be thinking about the ones before you, and not only can that cause problems in your bedroom, but as well as problems in your relationship neither one you are willing to have or want. So, the next time your partner asks you, “Baby how many sex partners have you had including me?” After you give them a answer of that’s not a question that you don’t want to answer they usually come back and say, “Aww come on baby, it’s ok you can tell me; it doesn’t matter how many it was before me I’m here now.” That’s when you simply just look at them and say,”If it doesn’t matter then how come you want to know, but ill tell you this, I have had some sexual encounters along the way, but know that I’ am STD free and you are my only sexual preference I’am encountering now.” Now after you have said all of that and they still are wanting to know the number then just be prepared to get in a discussion about you not being open with her/him as she/he is with you, and that you don’t trust her/him enough to tell her/him things about your past if she/he is suppose to be your present an future. So depending on who your partner is, you might be in a lose/lose situation. It is up to you to ensure in your partners mind that your past sexual encounters are that of your past, and they have nothing to worry about with their sexual well being.

Love & Relationsips/ Confessions

M

Cam’Ryn’s Confession

ost of us dream of having the family, the kids, the house and dog; the perfect wedding to the person that meets everything on your “list.” I remember praying to God and asking for Him to send me the perfect mate. After some of the relationships I had, I never thought I would find that person. I struggled with my sexuality for a long time. Even after I realized that I had an attraction to women, I still fought with it. I would still sleep with men, thinking that maybe I wasn’t sure. Maybe I could change. Being an African-American woman, who is a lesbian (mouthful), puts me in so many minority categories. Who needs more labels? That is only one more thing that society uses to oppress me. Not allowing gay marriage or even recognizing civil unions is a direct violation of my civil rights. No…I am not on some band wagon, yelling and protesting to fight for equality. I just go to work and get through each day. Even if you are heterosexual, you should feel something about your government controlling your right to marry. Marriage is something between two people. It is what happens in your house and in your bedroom. It is what two people share. You do not go to bed with your government. You do not struggle to pay bills and take care of the kids with your government. You do not make life altering decisions with politicians and judges. Marriage is supposed to be about love, and finding that person you can tolerate.

Barbershop Talk

T

he other day we were sitting inside of the local barbershop, waiting for our son’s hair to be cut, when we overheard some men standing around talking about women. One of the men was talking about how women can lie. He went on to say that a woman could lie to a man for twenty-five years, telling a man that a child that he has raised and has known to be his is own was not really his. First, we cannot issue a blanket statement about women being liars if we cannot also say that all men are dogs. While women are running around reading books about how to think like a man, men are standing in barbershops slandering our character. You may be wondering exactly what I was wondering…did they not see women were sitting there hearing this discussion? They most certainly did.

By Queen-n- Cam’Ryn to find yourself in relationships that are not what you were looking for, then maybe you should step back and do a self-evaluation. 2. Do not allow one bad relationship to be the defining factor for all relationships. 3. If you see signs that the person you are with is not right for you…LISTEN. Your gut instinct is better than any DNA test or polygraph. 4. Remember that YOU are worth having the best out of life. Do not cheat yourself. 5. How a person interacts with their family is also important. If a person treats the family like crap, you can only imagine how they will treat you.

I wonder if we had started talking about men being liars and cheaters, would they have jumped into our discussion. We do believe the conversation would have gone differently. They would have been all over us… “Not all men are dogs and cheaters... and I’m a good man...ECT...” Do not get me wrong by no means are we “man bashing”, but it is just the truth. So as we sat there and listened to them bash women. We saw no real reason to jump in to defend something that did not pertain to us. Here are some things to remember about men and women: 1. We attract what is truly in us. If you continue SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 58

Going Through the Hurricane: How to Stay Positive When Things Get Rough

By Naomi MzNay Bonman

Life will take you through a few hurricanes. It keeps the things that are supposed to be in your life standing, and washes away the things that aren't supposed to be in your life

As time passes by, a few things are able to getrebuilt but of course they are never in the same state that they once were. They change, although the appearance may be different, some of the other things about this .things or person are still the same For example: they still carry the same name and a couple of things may still be the same inside but there are a whole lot of other changes within .that can't automatically be seen So basically God puts as through a hurricane throughout different stages of our lives, it seems bad at first but in the end it was for a good cause and our lives are a whole lot better SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 62

Murder Cannont Stand Trial

By Curl J. Louis

M

urder knows no race, age, gender or religion. It does not know hatred or racism. It does not know the difference between right or wrong, nor can it think own its own but today there are people in life questioning whether a senseless act of violence can be justified under a state’s law. How can we hold something accountable that does not act on its own intentions not knowing the purpose it is being used for? Murder cannot be put on trial, the gun cannot face a jury of its peers for that much the bullet cannot testify on its behalf and be crossed examined by the defense attorney. Murder cannot call upon character, witness to speak on its behalf, nor can it recall its alibi on the night in question. When there is a life taken away there is so much evidence that is collected to gather the facts, and there are so many sides of the story to be told, but the side of the story that needs to be told is that of the victim, but they cannot tell, nor can we hear their story.

is the intentions of that of the person behind the tool sets out to use it for. As it is simply put and has been referred to numerous times «guns do not kill people it is the person holding the gun that kills people.» So on that accountability how can we put murder, the gun or the bullet on trial for a crime it did not commit, nor did it set out to do?

We live in a world where we have laws that protect us and give us the right to bear arms; however, those same laws and constitutional rights do not permit us to take the life of somebody because we do not recognize them in our neighborhood, the color of their skin, the type of clothing they are wearing and blatantly disregard the laws given to them by law officials who are sworn to protect us from others. How can we pass judgment on somebody else when we cannot judge ourselves in that same light we tend to pass over another? The bible says «For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.» Therefore for every action there is a reaction; you cannot escape the consequences of your actions, for when your time comes you too shall be judged. The society we live in today has given us misguided conceptions simply because you own a gun does not give you the right or authority to shoot people as you see fit. We have converted back to the ways of the wild wild west where we shoot first and ask question later. In the bible it states «no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn.» The weapon that is used to take away a life is not made for or intended for that purpose it is simply a tool just as a screwdriver and shovel is made for it SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 64

Advice/ Modeling Industry

Tyra Banks Open Letter started to get curvy. My agency gave my mom a list of designers that didn’t want to book me in their fashion shows anymore. In order to continue working, I would’ve had to fight Mother Nature and get used to depriving myself of nutrition. As my mom wiped the tears from my face, she said, “Tyra, you know what we’re going to do about this? We’re going to go eat pizza.” We sat in a tiny pizzeria in Milan and strategized about how to turn my curves into a curveball. In a way, it was my decision not to starve myself that turned me into a supermodel, and later on, a businesswoman.

T

o models around the world, I want to celebrate Vogue’s recent groundbreaking announcement. The editors of Vogue’s 19 international editions have pledged to ban models from their pages who “appear to have an eating disorder,” to create healthy backstage working conditions, as well as several other revolutionary initiatives. This calls for a toast over some barbecue and burgers! When I started modeling, I used to see models that seemed unhealthy backstage at fashion shows. They appeared to be abusing their bodies to maintain a certain weight. These girls were booked over and over again for countless fashion shows and photo shoots. I’m sure many of you today have witnessed this, or even live it. Now, real progress is finally on the horizon. Vogue is stepping up, doing the right thing, and protecting that girl. Perhaps that girl is you! People get upset with you if you’re a very thin model. What many don’t know is that a certain sample size has been set by the industry, and you’re doing everything in your power to keep working. At times, I feel there’s an unspoken rule that says, “There’s no such thing as being too thin, as long as you don’t pass out.” In my early 20s I was a size four. But then I

On America’s Next Top Model, I mentor girls on television. When that TV goes off, I actually mentor other girls in the modeling industry, girls that have not been on Top Model, but who appear in Vogue worldwide. On late night calls, I console them as they confide in me about their bodies maturing, and not being able to fit into sample sizes anymore. Now I know you all will still call me for advice, but I don’t think there will be as much of: “I’m hungry, Tyra, and I’m tired. But I still want to do runway and high-fashion work. I want to stay on top.” With Vogue’s new mandates, things, I hope, will now change for the better. Tyra Banks addresses criticism about her weight on “The Tyra Banks Show.” I would love for models to be protected by a guild. Even when I was a teen model, I didn’t think it was fair that I had to enter the acting world to get insurance. When I went to Paris after graduating high school, I saw a model that was 12 years old without any supervision. That wouldn’t happen in the acting world. There needs to be more industry wide protections for models, and we need to be more consistent with what the acting world does: protect our minors, as well as the health and well-being of models. Many of you have graciously said that you want to have the same type of career that I’ve had. But the truth is that if I was just starting to model at age 17 in 2012, I could not have had the career that I did. I would’ve been considered too heavy. In my time, the average model’s size was a four or six. Today you are expected to be a size zero. When I started out, I didn’t know such a size even existed. If I was just starting to model at 17 in 2012, I could not have had the career that I did. I would’ve been considered too heavy. To moms everywhere, we need to educate our girls SUMMAG-URBAN.COM 66

not to fall prey to uninspirational images of beauty. So where do we start? By being very careful about how we talk about our own bodies in front of our daughters. We can show our daughters diverse images of beautiful women: curvy, tall, short, and everything in-between. Moms, you are the first and most influential role model in your girl’s life. Use that power. Teach her to love herself and everything that makes her unique. To young girls everywhere, it’s sad that our bodies go in and out of style, just like fashion trends. One season we’re supposed to be a zero, and the next you’re supposed to be a six. Then you’re supposed to have a six-pack, but wait, now you’re supposed to be juicy ... with a booty! It makes us feel crazy. Many of you are saying, “What the heck am i supposed to be?” Exactly who you are right now: that’s who you need to be. There are so many models out there with bodies that aren’t stick figures. There’s Lara Stone, who has unique features like the gap between her front teeth, and she’s not a stick. And I love Doutzen Kroes and Kate Upton’s bodies. They’re softer than most girls these days. Kate Dillon is a gorgeous plus-size model, or, as I like to call her, “fiercely real.” I’ve been using the word «flawsome» a lot. It’s you + your flaws + awesome = Flawsome. I have a big forehead, and I got made fun of all time. When I was a little girl, they used to call me “five-head.” I’ve been teased my whole life, but I continue to rock it with pride. Years ago one of my agents told me that my forehead was what got me signed. Tyra Banks discusses her letter on “Good Morning America.” Vogue has the power to make and break, whether it’s fashion trends, designers, models, and yes, even industry practices. Their bold stance means that others will follow. Now it’s up to you. Take your “flaw,” and turn it on its (fore)head. And never forget that you are fabulous, you are fierce, you are flawsome.
