Ways to Make the Most

of Your Maternity Leave

When I was pregnant, I would sit at my work desk and dream about my coming year off with my first child. It is rare in life when reality surpasses fantasy, but this past year — which is rapidly drawing to an end — has been one of the most exciting and memorable times in my life.

#15

Love Yourself

Pregnancy, birth, and the demands of motherhood can take its toll on you. Whenever a friend or family member offers to take care of baby so you can get a break, by all means do so! As a new mom, you need to be able to recharge and rejuvenated on a regular basis.

#14

Don’t Just buy Items for Baby

Treat yourself to some new apparel. Embrace clothing that accentuates your personality and strut your stuff. Prove to the world that new mommies can look fabulous even when they are sleep-deprived and only have time for a 10-minute shower.

Having less stuff around to dust, trip over, and rescue from inquisitive little fingers, makes life simpler.

When someone tells you how great you look say, “Thank-You”. After all you certainly deserve it! Tired circles may have replaced the glow of pregnancy, but your new role as a caring mom is very attractive.

Email is your new BFF. Stay in touch with family or friends with email updates. It is far less stressful than trying to pry a phone away from a six-month-old who sees it as an intriguing new toy. You can also get up from the keyboard at a moments’ notice when baby needs attention.

From the six months on, my baby loved the pool. Holding on to him as he played in his water floaty gave him an opportunity to get some exercise which played him out and contributed to him sleeping more soundly during naptime.

Sign Up for Mom and Baby Exercise Classes

When you have a new baby at home, getting to the gym can be challenging — to put it mildly. Even if you can muster the motivation, there’s always the issue of childcare. Staying fit is so much easier when you sign up for fitness classes which enable you to take baby along. These classes may offer some socializing time as an extra bonus which can be very uplifting for you.

#5

Bath with Your Baby

The skin-to-skin contact, steamy air and warm water creates a relaxing, bonding experience for both of you.

#4

Enjoy Nature Together

Find things you and your little one like to do together such as daily walks in your neighbourhood and/or trips to a nearby park. Use this precious time off to explore together. You will soon be rushing around when you are back at work so by all means stop and smell the roses together.

Fall in Love All Year Long

You’ll never get a chance to capture the moments again with your newborn. I recommend contacting a photographer shortly after baby is born. Most newborn photo sessions are scheduled when baby is 3-5 weeks old. Quality newborn photos are not easy to take with a smartphone.

Capture all those precious baby memories from your baby’s first year with a special keepsake box. Include photos and the history of your baby’s milestones to share with your child when he or she is older.

The dirty dishes, piles of clothes and messy rooms are a lesser priority when you have an adorable little one gazing at you. Remember babies grow up all too fast and you will want to be fully present to enjoy this magical time with your little one. • Erin is a new mom living in Langley and enjoyed her year off with her now 1-year old son, Jacob. She reminds all parents to enjoy their maternity leave and try as many new activities as you can.

Go Tech-Free for the Holidays No matter how old your children might be, chances are their wish list includes tablets, smartphones, video games, headphones, and other tech-related gifts. Teach them about finding balance by making sure they get to experience a different kind of “connection”. No passwords required. Create the atmosphere so your children can enjoy quality time off-line and recharge as a family with some of those time-tested activities such as a good low-tech board game! Here are five ways to replace screen time with family activities that foster communication and social interaction during the holidays:

Read Holiday Books Together Children of every age benefit from reading. Plan ahead so you have an assortment of holiday classics available for those relaxing

evenings by the fire. Get Grandma and Grandpa involved. Use this time to share stories about your own childhood and plans for the holidays.

Organize a Cooking Party Spend an evening with close friends and family baking holiday treats so everyone can take home a tasty assortment. Alternatively, let your children pick out their favourite recipes and cook a holiday meal together.

Plan Some Family Game Nights Bring out the board games, a few decks of cards and have a family game night. During the holidays give your children a chance to experience simple fun nights and quality time as a family.

Serve Together as a Family Donate your time with a non-profit organization or charity with special meaning to your family. Or you might know of a family who could use some help over the holidays. Surprise them with baked goods, a special meal or free babysitting. Take this time to teach your children to give instead of just receive.

CBC’s The Goods

Jessi Cruickshank She is known for her quick wit and self-deprecating sense of humor and has been widely recognized for her philanthropy and sense of style. Though she grew up in Vancouver, Jessi Cruickshank was born in Calgary (and true to her comedic core, she was born in an A&W restaurant). Her outstanding career progression in television was a result of her highly engaging hosting/co-hosting on such shows as MTV Canada’s The After Show and CBC’s Canada’s Smartest Person. Her tenacity throughout her career led to her current role as one of four co-hosts on CBC’s The Goods. After a challenging pregnancy, Cruickshank is now embracing her life as a mom to twin boys, Diego and Rio. Early in the pregnancy, she and her husband found out she was carrying high-risk Monochorionic identical twins. Her babies were sharing one amniotic sac and one placenta which resulted in ‘Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome’, with one baby getting less space and nutrients. With those stressful days in the past, Cruickshank and her husband are now happily managing all the ‘chaos-times-two’ while caring for their twins. Urbanbaby & Toddler Magazine recently had the chance to chat with the remarkable Cruickshank in between diaper changes and feedings. UBT: What was the most surprising thing about Motherhood, once you had the boys in your arms? JC: I’ve always been so career-focused and driven and really only thought about my next career move. The minute I had my twins, I thought they would be a part of my life but in a matter of two

months, my life is completely turned around and I am now part of their life. I never thought that everything else would become a secondary priority to these two incredible human beings. UBT: New parents always have some challenges to deal with. What has been the most challenging for you so far? JC: First and foremost, I am very lucky to have an incredible partner in my husband Evan. It’s a very modern situation that we have, and I am so grateful for it. He is taking time from his job to be home with kids when I go back to work. It’s pretty amazing, and I encourage more partners to do that — certainly more husbands to do that — because I know it’s been just as gratifying for him as it has been for me to be able to spend so much time with our babies. The more challenging part is having two newborns. At night, we get up every three hours to feed them, and they are little so it takes 45 minutes to an hour to feed, burp and change one then put him back to sleep – and then you have to start all over again! It is just simply that everything is doubled up plus the fact that my double stroller literally doesn’t fit in any doorway anywhere. I’m knocking things over everywhere we go but that is the smaller challenge.

Read past celebrity parent interviews at

www.urbanbaby.ca

UBT: What is the best advice you were given about Parenthood? JC: Just a couple of days ago, somebody said to me “why don’t your babies wear bibs?” It was like my head exploded in that moment. I don’t know why we were draping these elaborate burp cloths over them very awkwardly every time we fed them and trying to catch it all when they would spit up. So today is my first day with my children wearing bibs, and I have to tell you: so far, so good. This has been a revelation. I think on a larger scale, it is my inspiring mom. It is less of just sitting there and giving me advice, but more of a lifetime of being raised by a cool and incredibly-strong career woman. She worked at CBC Vancouver as television host and producer while I was growing up. Watching her balance work and Motherhood was really incredible. UBT: Now that you are a new mom, what advice do you have for soon-to-be or new parents? JC: I would say make your relationship a priority. Something I am obviously acutely aware of is that the relationship and the bond you have with your partner, through the pregnancy and beyond provides a foundation for your kids, in terms of what a respectful partnership is and what respecting a woman looks like. I am raising two boys, and very aware of that. I think that establishing that mutual respect for each other while raising children is so important. There are those times at 3am when we haven’t slept, looked at each other and said things that I never imagined I would say to another human being. I am sure most couples have experienced that. It’s those moments you have to ‘breathe through’ and laugh at the next day while navigating this crazy adventure together. UBT: What is in store for you in the future? Have your future career plans changed since having your twin boys? JC: I am sure my goals will change as they grow up. I never thought I would be able to do a daytime show (CBC’s The Goods) at this stage in my career. It’s a place that is so warm and welcoming for a new mom. So going back to that audience is pretty special because I am able to share stories and be totally open and honest with what’s going on in my life. I think one thing I am super aware of is the fact I come from comedy and everything I do has a funny comedic, edgy spin to it. I am so terrified to lose my edge. And I never want to lose that comedic spin. My goal right now is just to make sure I stay true to that and I continue to do things that surprise audiences and push boundaries. I don’t want to become soft, just because I have babies. •

Canada’s New Food Labels: What You Need to Know

The Government of Canada has created new rules for food labels. The food labels will look relatively similar to those in the past. There will continue to be a table indicating nutritional facts table and an ingredient list for every food that comes in a package. Some of the changes to food labeling will assist you in making healthier choices for your family.

Sugar Content There are two changes on food labels related to sugar. On the old nutrition facts table, the number of grams of sugar was listed but there was no percent daily value provided. On the new labels there will now be a percent daily value listed. There are two sets of percent daily value, depending on whether the food is designed for young children or designed for people of all ages. If the food is designed for children 1-4 years of age, then 100% of the daily value is 50 grams of sugar. If the food is for all ages, then 100% of the daily value is 100 grams of sugar. So, if you’re looking for foods with low-sugar content and the foods you are looking at aren’t specifically designed for children under four years of age,

you’ll want to look for even lower sugar percentages then what is listed on the label. It’s also important to note that the sugar in the percentage includes both natural sugars and added sugars. So, something that is 100% fruit (containing quite a bit of natural sugar) could look like it has the same amount of sugar as candy (with lots of added sugar). The second change regarding sugar is that all sources of added sugar must be listed in brackets after the word ‘sugars’ in the ingredient list. This means that you no longer have to know the

dozens of terms that mean ‘sugar’. Ingredients that are ‘added sugars’ (which sound healthy) such as brown rice syrup, can no longer be obscure.

Allergens The ingredient list is where you want to go if you or your family members have food allergies. Immediately after the ingredient list, there now needs to be the word ‘contains’ and then a listing of any of the 10 foods that are most common ‘priority allergens’ in Canada including:

Statements like ‘may contain…’and ‘made in a facility that also processes…’ are still allowed on food labels. As before, such sentences cannot be false or misleading.

Serving Sizes When I teach reading food labels in workshops, serving sizes is the most common thing that people get wrong. Here are some tips on changes being made to food labels relative to serving sizes.

Register online to Attend

First, the serving size isn’t an indication of how much you should eat of a food. It’s simply an indication of how much food is being referred to in nutrition facts on the label. For example, if in nutrition facts it states that there are two grams of fibre in certain bread, one must be aware of the ‘designated serving size’ listed on the label. The second important point is that before you go looking at the number of grams or percent daily value listed, you need to see how much food the nutrition facts label is referring to. The amounts shown are now becoming more standardized making it easier to compare different brands.

Get Christmas all wrapped up...

Food Labeling Timelines The Government of Canada has given food companies five years to change their food labels. So, for the next five years, you’ll find a combination of the old food labels and new labels on store shelves. More good news: On new food labels, food colours must be listed by their individual common names. In other words, the vague catchall ‘artificial colour’ is no longer allowed. •

Beyond Manners:

Teach Your Child to Be Respectful and Courteous Getting children to grow up to be respectful and courteous is an important objective for parents. We need to go beyond just teaching and reinforcing good manners. Being connected to children during good times and bad times can aid us in teaching respect, courtesy and many other desired qualities. The process is more like “guiding” children through life situations together instead of placing high expectations for them to do things “independently, perfectly and instantly”.

Connection and Affection Are Key Snuggles, kisses and hugs with your children are beautiful demonstrations to show them that they are safe and loved. Another great way to connect with a child is during difficult times. Simply refrain from judgment, blame or argument. Instead, stay present. Just “being there” for them can have a great impact on a child’s emotional development. Adults regulating themselves during these challenging times can help children learn to regulate themselves, which is one of the most magnificent forms of respect. It signifies true acceptance; so we are reassured that even during our ‘not so good times’, we are worthy of love, patience and kindness.

Managing Challenging Times We all have to deal with tough times. As a parent, it is your chance to demonstrate the respect, politeness and courtesy to your children because it is during such times when our instincts usually tell us ‘to run for the hills and hide’ or get mad. Now this doesn’t mean that if a child hits, throws or screams at the top of their lungs that things are okay. I recommend you always correct a child’s hurtful or harmful behaviour both during and after a tantrum episode, however, there is a way to respond to them respectfully rather just always react which tends to usually be more negative.

Monkey See – Monkey Do Children learn two ways. They learn when they are taught skills through verbal or auditory instructions. They also learn by what they observe in their environment. If children are told what is expected of them and then observe the adults in their lives not demonstrating it, this can eradicate all the hard work and effort that had already been made thus far. Adults displaying good manners and actions is absolutely critical in influencing children to adopt positive behaviour patterns.

12 | www.urbanbaby.ca | winter 2017

Here are Five Steps to Teach Respect: 1. Discuss Expectations. Take time to explain things. For example, you could say “I would like for you to ask me for something instead of just demanding something!” Give them the language or phrases such as “I would like some help getting a drink Mommy” instead of just “Get me water!”. Always seek appropriate timing. For example, when someone is in a conversation, say “Excuse me” before sharing your message or “Thank you” after someone does something helpful for you. Many parents assume their child just ‘knows’. Children are always learning so reminders and guidance reinforce those lessons.

2. Build on Your Child’s Skills. When you build up skills your child already has, it allows him or her to feel more positive and self-secure. Having a healthy and strong self-esteem almost always makes children feel better and want to learn whereas being degraded or punished does just the opposite.

3. Be a Good Role Model. Parents need to demonstrate to children what good behaviour looks like in ‘real life situations’. Use physical gestures, examples or videos/photos to allow them to fully understand the scope of the concept.

4. Allow Time for Processing Information. It takes time to learn a new skill and children learn through guidance and repetition. Embrace and celebrate the willingness of a child ‘trying’ rather than ‘immediate’ results.

5. Reinforce Appropriate Behaviour. When something good takes place like a nice gesture or action, let your child know exactly what part was positive. Using high 5’s, pats-on-the-back and affection can help children realize expectations have been met. Instilling respectful behaviour in children is an on-going commitment and takes continuous guidance. Children of all ages learn well when they are given time to learn, listen and process. Keep in mind that they are also being constantly influenced with the skills demonstrated to them by the adults in their lives. What children see and experience on a regular basis is what they tend to demonstrate in their own lives. Teaching children to be respectful and courteous as early as possible is an investment in time and energy that pays off significantly in the long run. • Julie is a mom, an Early Childhood Consultant and owner of Miss Behaviour: parenting coach and consulting services’, the children’s behaviour and discipline specialists! Meet Six Inspiring Moms! Striving to achieve work-life balance can be challenging for moms. So how does one achieve career and personal goals while still keeping family life a high priority? Read about these inspiring moms who are living in the moment and making specific life choices so they can spend quality time with their growing families.

Holly Choi Co-Owner, Safe Beginnings First Aid Holly discovered her passion for teaching and mentoring while working in the medical software field for over five years. Following the birth of her first child in the summer of 2015, she was certified as a First Aid Instructor with the Lifesaving Society BC/ Yukon Branch. Shortly thereafter, Holly and her sister became co-owners of Safe Beginnings First Aid. Their company educates over 250 caregivers each month with essential lifesaving skills for small children. She values the flexibility of being self-employed because it allows her to spend more time with her two-year old daughter. She is expecting her second child in the New Year.

Adrienne Lloyd Banking Advisor Adrienne works as a Banking Advisor for a large financial institution. As a working mother, she is learning how to achieve work /life balance. After having her child, she suffered from postpartum depression and going back to work heightened that for her. While sharing her struggle with post-partum depression, she heard from numerous moms who had suffered in silence. Despite her struggles, she was successful in losing 120 pounds and has kept the weight off. Adrienne’s hope is that her stories of determination will be encouraging to other mothers trying to find a balance.

Jory Threinen It Works, Independent Distributor Jory is a mother to two beautiful daughters, ages seven months and and four-years old. She has been married to her high school sweetheart for six years. This busy mom works three days a week as a sales and marketing coordinator at the Delta Burnaby hotel. She is also an Independent Distributor for It Works (a health and wellness company). She makes time to volunteer at her local elementary school, where her daughters will go to school when they are older. Jory believes that with balance and dedication, a mom can do anything she desires. As a caring person, she is proud to be that friend who will listen to someone’s troubles and provide guidance for moving in the right direction. She strives to do her best in all her roles and is always looking for ways she can improve from the day before.

Lisa Bruce Placement Manager, Nannies on Call Lisa is mom to two wonderful children, seven-year old daughter and 11-year old son. She is thankful to be married to a “wonderful husband”. For over ten years, she has worked as a Placement Manager for Nannies On Call, a Vancouver-based live-out Nanny agency. She particularly enjoys placing passionate and professional nannies with hardworking, corporate and often high-profile clients. Lisa considers her work engaging especially when she places an outstanding nanny with a family that hasn’t had luck on their own! Offering advice and educating families on how to go about hiring nannies is her passion. According to Lisa, her decade of experience combined with being a mom has helped her immensely in relating well with clients.

Tanja Kankaansyria Co-owner, Gathered – A Boxed Collection Tanja, a single parent and business owner, is mom to a 11-year old son. This hard-working mom and her twin sister are co-owners of the Gathered — A Boxed Collection. Their subscription gift box company and online retail store both specialize in items for newborns, toddlers and children up to age six. Motherhood has been the most rewarding part of Tanja’s life, and as a single parent, she loves to share this experience with her son. Tanja’s goal is to demonstrate to him that hard work will take you far in life; and that success is attainable, if you do the work, have faith; and have as much fun as possible while achieving your goals.

Codi Darnell

Blogger • www.helpcodiheal.com Codi is a mother of three and a blogger at www.helpcodiheal.com. After falling ten feet in March of 2016, she became a T-11 paraplegic and now lives her life in a wheelchair. According to Codi, her amazing husband and two boys, ages six and seven gave her tremendous emotional strength and support after her accident. Through her blog she gives others an insight into her life as a wife, mother and paraplegic. Codi says her blog serves a dual-purpose. Writing about her journey has helped her cope and wrap her mind around all of the changes that occurred in her (along with all the emotions that come as a result of those changes). She also sees her blog as a way to spread awareness of what being a wife and mom with a disability looks like. Codi believes it is helpful for adults to get an understanding of what her life is like. She has noticed that some parents get flustered when they think that their child will ask her questions or say the wrong thing in front of her. This very inspiring mother doesn’t want people to feel uncomfortable around her or others in a similar situation. It is Codi’s goal to help ease those tensions for everyone around her.

Making the Most of Parent Teacher Interviews Research has shown that parental involvement is the most important factor in a student’s success at school. And your participation in parent-teacher interviews is instrumental in helping your child reach full potential. Here are some ways to get the most out of this valuable time with your child’s teacher:

Share Background Information Understanding your family’s unique dynamics is important to your child’s teacher. Your child’s teacher needs to know about any changes to living situations including a new baby; a new house; illness or a family separation. Take this opportunity to talk your child’s interests, needs, strengths and personality traits.

Prepare In Advance and Be on Time

Think About Challenges

Before you meet be sure to review your child’s report card and put together a list of questions to ask the teacher. In the early primary years, you’ll want to find out about your child’s progress with basic skills in reading, writing and math. Inquire about your child’s behaviour and social skills in the classroom and on the playground.

Inform the teacher about comments your child may have made regarding parts of school that are ‘too hard’ or ‘too easy’. Teachers are skilled at differentiating the curriculum to suit the needs of each child. Your feedback may be helpful in identifying areas where your child would benefit from more foundational work or more challenging learning opportunities.

Keep an Open Mind Your child’s teacher has the same goal as you do. You both want your child to do well at school. Listen to what the teacher has to say. Stay calm and respectful. If the teacher raises any concerns or ask questions, listen carefully to the teacher’s responses so you can fully understand what is going on. If you are aware of a factor that could be contributing to a problem, share it with your child’s teacher. So for example, your child might have told you that they get distracted by a chatty child who sits nearby.

Make an Action Plan If you and the teacher have identified any issues, talk about a plan to address them. Discuss ways you can work together so your child can achieve full potential. After your parent-teacher conference, find an appropriate time to discuss this action plan with your child so everyone is on the same page.

Find Out How You Can Help Have some dialogue with your child’s teacher about ways you can support your child’s learning at home. Ask for suggestions regarding learning activities you and your child can do at home to further enhance your child’s skills. Inquire also about educational resources such as websites or apps. • Sasha is a sixth-grade teacher and mother of three girls. She loves teaching her students how to enjoy learning and believes that all students can and will achieve at their own pace in an environment that is conducive to learning.
