editorial: Esta ciudad, como todas, se mueve en círculos, pero no son los regidos tradicionalmente por el año. Cuando termina uno y empieza otro, muchas imágenes y muchos sonidos adquieren un sitio distinto. Durante el proceso se movieron paulatina y rápidamente y ahora al retomar su lugar, se frenan para dar la sensación de letargo nuevamente. El sentimiento es como el de la resaca después de la fiesta, fue bueno mientras duró. Este número de Urban Catarsis se sitúa ya en ese lapso, considerado como el punto de inicio en el círculo barcelonés. Y pese a las escasas esperanzas de esta época, ahora aprovechamos el sentimiento de lo estático para dar movimiento, con el mero propósito de adivinar lo que será del otoño en Barcelona.

This, like all cities, moves in circles, but not those ruled traditionally by the year. When one season ends and the next one begins, many images and sounds occupy a different place. During the process they move gradually and rapidly, and now they reposition themselves, braking to give the feeling that everything is static once again. The sensation is like a hangover after a party, good while it lasted. This edition of Urban Catarsis occupies that lapse, which can be considered the starting point for the Barcelona cycle. And even though not so much is expected of this season, on this occasion we will take advantage of the static feeling to make movement, and only try to guess what the Barcelona autumn has in stall for us.

Aunque parezca mentira, David (24) llegó a la fotografía de cierta manera, por casualidad, pues le llamaba más la atención el diseño industrial. Estudió 3 años de fotografía en el IEFC (Institut de Estudis Fotografics de Catalunya) e hizo las especializaciones en “Fotografía de viajes”, “Escribir sobre fotografía” y “Arquitectura e interiorismo”. Sin embardo, David no se cierra en una sola variable, también estudió

restauración de muebles, ha hecho reportajes de boda (a pesar de no interesarle del todo) y actualmente está buscando donde colocar sus reportajes de viaje (Cuba, Croacia, Tarragona) como freelance.

Strange though it may seem, David (24) got into photography a little by accident, as he was previously more interested in industrial design. Having studying photography for three years at the IEFC (Institut de Estudis Fotografics de Catalunya) and specialising in “Travel Photography”, “Writing About Photography” and “Architecture and Interiors”; David is not limited to just one facet of his art, he has also studied furniture restoration; photographed at weddings, even though that is not what most interests him, and is currently looking to sell his photo-reports (Cuba, Croatia, Tarragona) as a freelance photographer. In his photography, he tries to link together several styles, although one of the genres which most interest him is minimalism, “the idea of expressing myself to the full with the right elements fascinates me”.

Abierta y progresista... te brinda la posibilidad de convivir con diferentes culturas, formas de pensar, apariencias... quizá lo que no me gusta, es que se valore por sus cualidades más superficiales, como la fiesta, diversión, etc.... creo que además de todo eso, ofrece muchas otras posibilidades.”

Ha cursado estudios de comic, dibujo, diseño gráfico, fotografía e ilustración; tanto en su ciudad natal como en Barcelona. Born in Buenos Aires, this Argentine has lived permanently in Barcelona since 2002 and has been deeply involved in visual creation for more than ten years. He has taken courses in comics, drawing, graphic design, photography and illustration at various stages, in Barcelona and Buenos Aires. 10

bacana orquesta Como la ciencia dicta, la energía no se crea ni se destruye sólo se transforma, y Bacana Orquesta sabe muy bien como aplicar esto a la música, su exquisita fusión de tango, rumba, funk, latin jazz y rock, nos lo confirma diciendo: “los estilos y las culturas, vuelven a fusionarse para crear nuevas formas,...los ritmos nacidos en la América de los inmigrantes europeos del siglo veinte, son revisionados por músicos sudamericanos en la Europa del siglo XXI”, definido así por sus propios integrantes, quienes confiesan además estar en la búsqueda de un sonido propio como la “milumbia” o el “cumbiango”. As is often said, energy is not created or destroyed, but transformed, and Bacana Orquesta know very well how to apply this idea to music. Their exquisite fusion of tango, rumba, funk, Latin jazz and rock confirm that “the styles and cultures fuse together again to create new forms... the rhythms born in the 20th century America of the European immigrants are reworked by South American musicians in 21st century Europe,” according to the band members, who confess to be searching for their own sound, much like “milumbia” or “cumbiango” Each with different individual trajectories, the members of Bacana Orquesta have passed by music schools in their respective countries and also in Barcelona. aryanour djalali Aryanour Djalali (31) originario de Palma de Mallorca y ascendencia iraní, modestamente nos describe su experiencia en la arquitectura como “reciente y muy intensa”, y desde luego no hay mejor manera de definir su trayectoria, pues a su corta edad ha diseñado mobiliario, decorado de interiores, rehabilitado edificios de viviendas y comerciales, proyectado casas, edificios, hoteles, resorts, oficinas, etc. Su estudio –DNA Arquitectos- ganó un concurso contra Lamela (estudio de Madrid) para el diseño de una comunidad residencial de 1000 viviendas en Budapest-Hungría; también ha llevado el proyecto de varios resorts turísticos en República Dominicana, Costa Rica o Brasil, pasando desde el diseño de diversas discotecas cerca de Barcelona, hasta el diseño de un sofá para el plató de varios programas televisivos, entre ellos el de Eva Hache.

Aryanour Djalali (31), born in Palma de Mallorca of Iranian ascendancy, modestly comments that his experience in architecture is “recent and very intense”, and there is indeed no better way to define his trajectory, given that in his tender years he has designed furniture, decorated interiors, renovated houses and commercial buildings, projected new houses, buildings, hotels, resorts, offices, etc. His company – DNA Architects – won a contest against Madrid’s Lamela firm for the design of 1,000 homes in Budapest, Hungary; they have also participated in a project comprising of several tourist resorts in Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Brazil, as well as designing different discotheques in Barcelona and a sofa which can be seen in various television programmes, including that of Eva Hache.

Misstress Barbara, en el mundo de la música electrónica predominantemente de hombres, se ha forjado camino. Rompiendo con estereotipos surge como una figura femenina fuerte, una DJ dedicada en sus inicios al techno, dura y brillante a la vez. Misstress Barbara (las 4 “s” son por un juego de palabras, mis y stress) nació en Italia, pero se formó en Canadá donde descubrió su interés por la música; en 1994 cambió las baquetas por dos tornamesas y un mixer, y empezó a formarse como DJ. En 2003 creó ITURNEM, su segundo sello, y sus ganas de duplicarse le hacen emprender otra faceta en su expresión musical, alejándose del techno duro que la caracterizó durante muchos años.

En sus nuevas producciones contempla sonidos minimalistas pero siempre tratados con la forma energética que la caracteriza como DJ y artista. En sus sesiones pasa del funky drummy pumpin’ techno a una música electrónica con mucho groove (ambos términos conceptualizados por ella misma), se identifica un matiz del género de sus raíces y nos muestra, como siempre, su origen latino lleno de vida y buen ánimo. Para la gente que no está familiarizada con tu nuevo estilo musical, ¿cómo lo definirías? “Funky “mediumal” techno.” Acerca de su nuevo estilo musical nos dijo lo siguiente: “Toco menos fuerte que antes y mis tracks ya no están tan llenos de loops (los que toco y los que produzco) pero no lo llamo minimal.

“Es menos BPM pero sigue siendo fuerte y groovy, y tal vez en otros momentos, muy profundo y melódico, pero no es minimal. Si toco minimal en una sesión, serán 2 ó 3 tracks, no todo el set. Verás, lo bueno que pasó conmigo, con este cambio, así como a todos los DJ’s en este mundo, es que nosotros, o por lo menos yo, nos abrimos a todo siempre y cuando sea bueno. No más etiquetas con respecto a lo que se toque, yo mezclo cualquier cosa que considere de calidad. Y esto se deriva definitivamente de una perspectiva más madura, que no tenía hace unos años.” Dices que has disfrutado trabajar con Bjork, James Holden, Laurent Garnier, Sven Vath o Carl Cox, todos diferentes entre sí, ¿tienes influencias de alguno de ellos? “Disfruté tocar con ellos, pero realmente en mi música la única influencia que se puede reconocer es de James Holden”.

¿Qué te gusta más, producir desde cero o hacer remixes? “Antes prefería hacer remixes y todavía me gusta mucho, pero creo que ahora prefiero producir desde cero. Es crear mi propia historia, es algo personal y de esa manera siento que hay más conexión.” Entre los remixes, ¿qué es lo que disfrutas más hacer? “A l g o q u e n o s e a e s p e c í f i c a m e n t e m ú s i c a e l e c t r ó n i c a , e s u n r e t o m a y o r .” Entre las mujeres y los hombres DJ’s hay diferencias. ¿A qué crees que se deba la conexión tan particular que las mujeres DJ tienen con el público? “Las mujeres son generalmente más sensitivas, así como perciben si algo bueno o malo está pasando, también lo perciben de su público. Por lo menos esa es mi opinión.

Pero para ser DJ no únicamente necesitas el sentimiento, ¡también necesitas agallas! Aunque intuyas lo que el público quiere, si no tienes las agallas para atraparlos y ser dueña de la situación (en mi caso, ¡la Misstress! -risas-), tu intuición será inservible. Lo mismo pasa con los DJ’s que sólo tienen agallas y para nada intuición, terminan tocando para ellos mismos. Ser un buen DJ no es cuestión de ego, tiene más que ver con ser valiente, sensitivo y un artista musical”. Bajar música por internet se ha popularizado y esto puede ser visto como un problema para la industria musical, incluyendo a la electrónica. ¿Cuál es tu opinión con respecto al libre acceso a MP3? No me gusta el MP3

¿Algún nuevo DJ o productor a llamado recientemente tu atención? “Paul Ritch, que no es nuevo, ha producido música que he tocado mucho.” ¿Qué sigue para Misstress Barbara? “Un álbum con canciones en su mayoría vocalizadas. Algo muy distinto a lo que he hecho, ¡espero que les guste!” Sin duda Misstress Barbara se mantiene en constante movimiento y a su paso Barcelona la alberga constantemente, tanto que probablemente escoja uno de sus clubes como sitio esporádico de residencia. Pero lo importante como DJ y productora, es el nunca descuidar la calidad de la música surgida de sus platos.

En tu opinión ¿cuál es el futuro de la industria musical? “Pienso que siempre estará presente; sin embargo, las ventas serán más difíciles, pero lo que sí es seguro es que la música nunca desaparecerá y ¡eso es lo más importante!” Una de tus más recientes producciones en Borde Community es el tema “Barcelona” ¿por qué le diste el nombre de la ciudad? ¿Qué significa Barcelona para ti? “Porque la compuse mientras estaba en Barcelona.” “Amo a la ciudad. Me recuerda a Montreal, donde vivo, por la gente y la actitud desenrollada de todo el sitio. Misstress Barbara has made her way in the predominantly maleorientated world of electronic music. Breaking through stereotypes, she has become a strong feminine figure, a dedicated DJ, hard, but also brilliant.

If I play minimal in a set, it’ll be 2 or 3 tracks, not an entire set. You see, the good thing that happened to me, as well as the rest of the DJs in this world, with this change, is that we, or at least I, opened up to just anything as long as it’s good.

Born in Italy, she grew up in Canada, where she would discover her interest in music; in 1994 she swapped the drums for the turntables and a mixer, and began to grow as a DJ.

No more labels of just playing this or that, I play whatever I think is good, and this is certainly coming from a more mature perspective, that I didn’t have yet a few years back.”

In, 2003 she created ITURNEM, her second label, and her desire to diversify saw her embark on the development of another side of her musical expression.

You say you have enjoyed working with Bjork. James Holden. Laurent Garnier. Sven Vath and Carl Cox, who are all very different from each other. Can any of these influences be seen in Misstress Barabara? And if so, which ones?

These changes contemplated some minimalist sounds but continued to be marked by the energetic forms which have identified Misstress Barbara as both DJ and producer.

In her sets, she moves from funky drummy pumpin’ techno to “electronic music with serious groove” (both terms conceptualised by her), identifying shades of the genre which saw her beginnings as a DJ and which, as ever, remain faithful to her vibrant and cheery Latin roots For people not familiarised with your new musical style, how would you define it? Funky “mediumal” techno. About her new musical style, she told us the following: “I don’t really think I play minimal anyway. I play less hard than before, and my tracks are not as full of loops as they used to be (the ones I play and ones I produce), but I don’t call that minimal. It’s less BPM but still very driving and groovy, or perhaps in other moments, very deep and melodic, but that’s not minimal.

“I enjoyed playing alongside them, but really in my music the only influence you can recognise is James Holden.”

What do you like better, producing from scratch or remixing? Why? “I used to prefer remixing, and I still like it a lot, but now I think I prefer producing from scratch. It’s my own thing, my own story, it’s personal, so I feel more connected with it.” Among your remixes, which have you enjoyed recreating the most? “Anything that was not necessarily electronic music, it’s a bigger challenge.” There are differences between male and female DJs. Why do you think female DJs have such a special connection with the audience? “Usually women are more sensitive, so the way they’ll feel it when something good or bad is going on, they’ll also be feeling more easily things out of a crowd. At least this is my opinion. But to be a DJ you don’t only need feeling, you also need guts!

And even if you feel what a crowd wants, but you don’t have the guts to grab them and be the master of the situation (in my case the Misstress! hahaha), your feelings will be useless. Same with the DJs who have only guts, but no feeling whatsoever and they end up playing for themselves. Being a good DJ is not an ego trip, it’s more being a courageously sensitive musical entertainer!”

In the European electronic scene, where do you place Barcelona?

Downloading free music from Internet grows everyday; this may be seen as a problem for music industry, including electronic music. What is your position with respect to MP3 free access?

“An artist album, with songs, mostly with my vocals. Very different stuff, and I hope you’ll like it!”

“I don’t like mp3’s!” Do you think buyers must receive extra benefits in order to avoid sales going down?

“Among the top 10 cities.” Has any new DJ or producer impressed you lately? “Not new, but Paul Ritch has been doing stuff I like playing a lot!” What is next for Misstress Barbara?

Misstress Barbara is constantly on the move and Barcelona is one of the cities that she keeps returning to, so much so that she may even choose one of its clubs for a sporadic resident DJ role. But what matters, above all, is that, as both a DJ and a producer, she keeps the high quality music spinning sweetly on her turntables.

“Maybe that would be an ideal solution! In life it’s always about give and take situations...” What is on your opinion the future of the industry? “I think it will always be around, sales will be more and more difficult, but one thing is for sure, music will never disappear and that’s the most important thing!” One of your recent productions on Border Community was called Barcelona. Why did you name this track after the city? What does Barcelona mean to you? “Because I composed it while I was in Barcelona!” “I love it very much. It reminds me of Montreal, where I live, because of the people and the easy going attitude of the whole city. Decir adiós siempre es difícil, pero decir adiós a un verano tan espectacular, es casi imposible. Sin embargo uno tiene el consuelo de poder disfrutar una fiesta de despedida a la altura de las circunstancias. El Weekend Dance fue la perfecta ocasión de vivir el último gran festival de verano y no pudimos dejar pasar esta oportunidad. Mientras la multitud se acumulaba a las afueras del Park del Forum, la expectativa crecía y se contagiaba, los ánimos se aceleraban. Momento de decir adiós a los festivales veraniegos, al calor y a su música; momento de disfrutar al máximo con esta despedida. Los dos escenarios, el Principal y el Loft fueron cada uno testigo de un público lleno de energía y unos artistas dispuestos a quedarse con toda ella. Y como las cosas buenas, son así de principio a fin. El festival comenzó con las estupendas presentaciones de Wally Lopez en el Loft, seguido de Cedric Gervais. Mientras en el escenario principal Undo & Vicknoise y Digitalism, alistaban los últimos detalles, para deleitarnos como sólo ellos pueden hacerlo De pronto, el house de Deep Dish irrumpió en el Loft, ya los espectadores estábamos dispuestos a escapar de nosotros mismos bailando hasta no poder más e incitados por la música, lo conseguíamos. Seguido por la eléctrica mezcla garage hip hop de Dizzee Rascal en el escenario principal, los cuerpos se fueron soltando y perdiendo su control aún más. Ya se respiraba una atmosfera de entusiasmo cuando Massive Attack hizo su entrada en el escenario principal: el público se dejó llevar del todo. Recreando su muy particular ambiente, lleno de misterio muy al estilo trip hop, su interesante conjunto de voces y sonidos electrizó a la audiencia con temas clásicos como Tear Drop, Karkakoma o Angel. Sin un momento de descanso Hernan Cattaeno, en el Loft nos brindó una muestra del mejor dance, y ya con los ánimos y euforia a tope, por fin llego el turno de Faithless: un explosivo experimento escénico lleno de luz y color hizo el fondo perfecto para el arranque de energía musical del que fuimos testigos. Insomnia, God Is A DJ y We Come 1 hicieron cantar a coro a todos los espectadores. Un poco cansados, pero aún con el ánimo en su apogeo, el techno de Sven Väth abrió con su muy particular estilo, usando el tema Tango Delle Rose canción de la B.S.O. del film Casablanca. De ahí en adelante todo fue baile y locura. Seguido por el intenso techno de Carl Craig nadie en el Loft paró de sudar al ritmo de la música. Mientras tanto en el escenario Principal el público bailaba, sudaba, transpiraba y disfrutaba de la misma manera el rock alternativo de Soulwax. Seguidos por Vitalic que irrumpía el cansancio de esta intensa jornada. La gente aún estaba sedienta de más y no desperdició ni un minuto de la energía más pura y vibrante de 2Many Djs, cerrando con ello el festival, así como el ciclo festival 2007. 32

It is always difficult to say goodbye. But to bid farewell to such a spectacular summer as the one just gone, is almost impossible. However, an exciting consolation came in the from of a farewell summer party. The Weekend Dance was the perfect occasion to live and breathe the last great summer festival and we could not let the opportunity pass us by. While the multitude accumulated outside the Park del Forum, expectations were rising and spirits improving. The moment to bid farewell to the summer festivals, the heat and the music, had arrived. It was time to enjoy the farewell, to the full. The two stages, the Main Stage and the Loft, saw a range of artists feed off the crowd’s tremendous energy. Good things are good from beginning to end. The festival began with excellent music from Wally Lopez in the Loft, followed by Cedric Gervais. Meanwhile, on the main stage, Undo & Vicknoise and Digitalism warmed up the crowd as only they know how, preparing them for what was to come later on. When Deep Dish’s house erupted in the Loft, everybody danced until they could no longer move. Thanks to them, we were able to carry on. On the main stage, the same bodies little by little began to lose control to Dizzee Rascal’s electric garage hip-hop mix. Expectation was growing and when Massive Attack made their longawaited entrance on the main stage, the crowd let themselves go. Recreating their own unique ambience, full of mystery-fuelled triphop, the band’s interesting blend of voices and sounds electrified the crowd with classic tracks such as Tear Drop, Karma Coma and Angel. Without a moment’s rest, Hernan Cattaeno was up on stage with some classic dance in the Loft, and then it was finally the turn of Faithless. An explosive scenic experiment full of light and colour proved the perfect backdrop for the energetic musical feast we were treated to. Insomnia, God Is a DJ, and We Come 1 got the crowd dancing, and everyone singing. A little tired by now, but still on a real high, we were then treated to Sven Väth’s unique brand of techno, which opened with Tango Delle Rose from the Casablanca film soundtrack. From then on, it was all dancing and craziness. The crowd never stopped sweating to the rhythm of the music as Carl Craig took to the stage in the Loft. There was simply no cure. At the same time, the Main Stage public were also dancing, perspiring and enjoying the alternative rock delivered by Soulwax, and then Vitalic. Tiredness was not an option. Now more thirsty than ever, the crowd enjoyed every minute of 2Many Djs’ pure and vibrant energy, which closed the festival, and with it, 2007’s spectacular summer cycle.

Basta con hacer referencia al nombre – Grand National – para comprender la importancia de este estupendo dueto británico. Nos referimos a una de las carreras ecuestres más antiguas y difíciles creadas a través de los años. Sus participantes deben ser resistentes, disciplinados e inteligentes. Con una divertida ambigüedad, bailables acordes agridulces y abstractismo palpable, Gran National - Rupert Lidon y Lawrence ‘La’ Rudd – empiezan a pisar fuerte en los oídos de lo ‘in’. Ambos son los responsables de este refrescante sonido. Iniciaron tocando covers en diferentes lugares al norte de Londres. Un ático fue el testigo de su primer trabajo - ‘Kicking The National Habit’-.

Las letras adaptables de “La” y la genuina producción de Rupert, los hacen sonar más como una banda integrada por más de 4 personas y no como dueto. En poco tiempo crearon todo un repertorio propio. Estando dentro de un mercado saturado, fueron ingeniosos para financiar su producto. Cantando canciones de Queen y de The Police –posible motivo de creer escuchar como segunda voz a Sting en algunas de sus canciones–, obtuvieron dinero para la producción de sus creaciones. Fue así hasta encontrar a Recall Records - sello discográfico idóneo para su trabajo – con quienes consiguieron su primer LP en el 2004. Las primeras críticas los comparaban con The Happy Mondays, New Order o el mítico grupo The Police (muy bien repasado por ellos). Su combinación de componentes de los ochentas y los noventas genera su originalidad, creando con ello un sonido atemporal.

Nación Abstracta – Grand National

We only have to listen to their name – Grand National – to know what to expect from this British duo. It refers to one of the most ancient and difficult horse races ever created. Its participants are usually resistant, disciplined and intelligent. With a fun ambiguity, danceable bittersweet chords and a palpable abstract-ism, Grand National - Rupert Lidon and Lawrence ‘La’ Rudd – are beginning to make themselves heard in the ears of the inn crowd. Both are responsible for this refreshing sound. They began playing covers in different North London venues. An attic was the witness to what would be their first work - ‘Kicking the National Habit’-.

“La”’s adaptable lyrics and Rupert’s genuine production make them sound more like a band with at least 4 members, than a duo. In little time they were able to create their own repertoire. Finding themselves in a saturated market, they found an ingenious way to finance their product. With the money they earned singing songs by Queen and The Police – which is maybe why it sounds like Sting is singing backing vocals on some of their songs – they were able to produce their own music. But it was not until they found Recall Records – a record label ideal for their work – that they launched their first LP, in 2004. Their first critics compared them to The Happy Mondays, New Order or the legendary group which had occupied so much of their time, The Police. Their combination of components from the 80s and 90s gave them originality and created a timeless sound.

El éxito llegó y fue inevitable tocar en vivo. Asumieron el reto de salir de su cómodo y estructurado estudio a escenarios por Europa, experiencia con la cual fueron perfeccionando: “Pienso que el tocar en vivo eleva las canciones del álbum. No es que las canciones suenen diferente cuando tocamos en vivo, sólo tienen más brillo”, dice Rupert. Gracias a su trayectoria, el sello lanzó una colección de las series B de la banda, así como algunas rarezas. Success arrived and they inevitably had to play live. They took up the challenge of taking their comfortable and structured studio sound to the stages of Europe, and the experience improved them as a band. “I think playing live gives the songs on the album a lift. It is not that the songs sound different live, just that they add an extra shine to them,” says Rupert. During promotion for their first LP, from 2004 to 2006, they made A ‘Drink and a Quick Decision’. This new album, recently released in 2007, sticks to and develops the themes found on ‘Kicking the National Habit’. There are darker tracks which hark back to ‘Depeche Mode’, as well as instrumental numbers which echo some of the band’s live moments.

Their success has led the label to release a collection of the band’s B-sides and rarities. This new album is for the lovers of classic British pop rock from the 80s and 90s; luminous and dark, danceable and serene, simple and deep. Parece que en Barcelona no alcanza el tiempo, no se detiene ni al cambiar de estación. Como el tiempo corre rápido siempre existe la sensación de insuficiencia y por ello, cuando nos damos cuenta, nos hemos quedado prendados a cualquier sitio, estancados en cualquier habitación, fulminados en cualquier calle. En ese instante justo no queda más que buscar refugio en la ropa, en la música o en nosotros mismos, tomar fuerza de la vida que sale de adentro, porque buscarla afuera sería absurdo. La sensación dura un momento, hasta que por fin la gente se decide a avanzar y todo alrededor recobra movimiento. Las horas vuelven a correr desenfrenadas, ya no pasan lento, la ciudad se mueve vertiginosamente de nuevo. Porque Barcelona, aunque nos fulmine constantemente, nunca se detiene. It seems as if in Barcelona there is no time, not even a moment for the passing of a season. As time moves fast, there is always the feeling of insufficiency and therefore, when we realise, we find ourselves attached to a certain place, stuck in a certain room, crushed in a certain street. In this very instant there is no other option but to seek refuge in clothes, music or in ourselves, gathering strength from life which comes from within, because to look for it outside would be absurd. The sensation lasts for a moment, until finally the people decide and everything around us begins to move. The hours become frantic, no longer passing slowly, the city moves vertiginously once again. Because Barcelona, although it sometimes crushes us, never ever stops. Venni Vidi Vinci Venecia PG13 Es verdad que Venecia se ha vuelto una ventana más al glamoroso, hedonista y para mi gusto, sobre expuesto Hollywood: ¿no extrañan aquellos gloriosos días cuando las estrellas aún eran misteriosas y no sabias si llevaban o no ropa interior? Sin embargo no subestimaremos nada y si bien este año no se ha destacado por sus sorpresas, sí nos ha dejado algunas y bastante buenas. De todas ellas la más destacada fue la actuación de Cate Blanchete, interpretando a un joven Bob Dylan en I’m not here de Todd Haynes. Gracias a este papel ya está fuertemente considerada en las nominaciones para los Oscares del 2008. Otra sorpresa fue la Copa Volpi a mejor actor para Brad Pitt, por su interpretación en The Assasination of Jesse James by the coward of Robert Ford. Una coincidencia bastante notoria, son los galardones de estos dos actores de Babel, considerando la participación de Iñarritú en el jurado, ¡mmm!. Por otra parte se hizo gala de la sabiduría y se otorgó el León de Oro (del 75º aniversario) a Bernardo Bertolucci, por su trayectoria. Por su parte, el director Ang Lee volvió a llevarse el galardón con el filme Lost, Caution (Se, Jie), como mejor película, en 2005 fue por Brokeback Mountain. También fuimos testigos de propuestas bastante interesantes, entre ellas el regreso como director de Kenneth Branagh con Sleuth, un remake de La Huella; y Peter Greenaway con Nightwatching una interesante teoría del famoso cuadro La Ronda de Noche de Rembrandt.

Yes, it is true that Venice has become a glamorous and hedonistic window for the, in my opinion, over-exposed Hollywood (Don’t you miss those glorious days when the stars were mysterious and you didn’t know whether or not they were wearing underwear?). However, nothing should ever be underestimated and even though this year will not be remembered for its surprises, it has produced some good productions. Among these, the one which most stands out is the performance of Cate Blanchett playing a young Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not Here. Blanchett has been nominated for an Oscar for that role. Another surprise was the Capa Volpi awarded to Brad Pitt for his role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. One quite big coincidence is that these two stars of Babel should have won the awards, considering that Alejandro González Iñárritu (that film’s director), was part of the jury. Mmm. Meanwhile, an honorary Golden Lion was awarded to Bernardo Bertolucci for his contribution to cinema, while the Golden Lion itself again went to director Ang Lee, who won it last time around with Brokeback Mountain and this time took the prize for Lost, Caution (Se, Jie). We were also witness to some very interesting offerings. Among them was the return of Kenneth Branagh with Sleuth, a remake of La Huella; and Peter Greenaway with Nightwatching, an interesting theory from Rembrandt’s famous painting The Night Watch.

Berlín Más allá del muro Han pasado casi 18 años y cómo ha cambiado Berlín. En noviembre de 1989, el muro por fin cayó y la ciudad se reencontró con la libertad. Y esa libertad la ha aprovechado al máximo, para reinventarse, para florecer y para convertirse en tal vez la ciudad más cool de Europa. La división entre el oeste y el este aún se nota, por supuesto, aunque esa línea ya poco visible hace todavía más fascinante la ciudad: un lado comercial, el otro alternativo; uno rico, el otro más modesto; uno de negocios, el otro placer. Pero más allá del muro y del turismo, Berlín es creatividad pura, apertura total e innovación inspiradora. Centro de diseño, arquitectura y música: la capital alemana lo tiene casi todo. Pocas ciudades europeas pueden presumir de una mezcla de arquitectura vieja y nueva tan brillante como la de Berlín, y aunque se vio obligada a renovarse tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los berlineses han abrazado la oportunidad para crear una de las urbes más vanguardistas en diseño y construcción de edificios. Beyond the wall Nearly 18 years have gone by and how Berlin has changed. In November 1989, the Wall finally came down and the city was reunited with its freedom. And it has made the most of that freedom to reinvent itself, flourish and become perhaps the coolest city in Europe. The division between west and east can still be noticed, of course, although that invisible line makes Berlin an even more fascinating place. One side is commercial, the other alternative; one rich, the other modest; one about business, the other about pleasure. But beyond the wall and the city’s tourism, Berlin is a purely creative, totally open and inspiringly innovative place; a centre of design, architecture and music. The German capital has almost everything. Few European cities can boast such a bold blend of architecture –old and new– as Berlin, and even though the city was forced to renovate and redevelop itself after the Second World War, the Berliners embraced that opportunity to create one of the most vanguard urban centres of design and building construction around. If the buildings represent the city’s face, Berlin’s heart beats to the sound of electronic, techno and house music. The best DJs always stop by. Here, they were born, inspired or created.

Volkspark Friedrichshain can be found conveniently next to Prenzlauerberg. It is a vast green space in the east of the German capital. It boasts a stage for theatre, a large swimming pool for summer, a beach volleyball court and an open air café. Equally popular with youngsters and elder generations. And very relaxing. Y para completar esta magnífica experiecia sensorial, una trapecista colgada en el aire deleita a los comensales con sus acrobacias entre telas sin dejar indiferente a nadie. Tiene aire de teatro clandestino de los años 50, con una decoración super kitsch , tapizados rococos y grandes espejos entre rojos, negros y mucho dorado.

Una araña de luces nos da la bienvenida en el lounge y dos enormes cortinas de terciopelo rojo dan paso a la zona de mesas, donde tiene lugar la presentación de las Drags alegrando la cena con actuaciones diferentes de lunes a sábado. Ofrece una variada carta de cockteles convirtiéndose así en restaurante, music loung, scenic space y cocktail bar. Ambiente desenfadado y moderno: muy Barcelona. Before (Santa Mónica, 2 ). Situado en una pequeña calle del Raval, nos invita a una de las propuestas mas “in” del momento: es restaurante y club al mismo tiempo. Pero no por ello penseís en uno de esos locales de moda caros y demasiado chic en donde te sientes incómodo y observado todo el tiempo, este local goza de un ambiente cálido con una estética atrevida muy retro-moderna, donde los muebles antiguos conviven a la perfección con las proyecciones en la pared y la cabina del Dj. Se puede tomar algo en la barra para abrir el apetito y después de una agradable cena disfrutar de la sesión. Barcelona siempre ofrece todo tipo de espectáculos, a toda hora y en cualquier sitio; y si queremos un espectáculo planeado, más allá del mes o época del año, la ciudad nos invita a la diversidad y originalidad en sus noches, sólo queda en nosotros elegir.

This place offers a warm atmosphere in a daring retro-modern aesthetic, where the antique furniture combines perfectly with the film projections on the wall and the dj booth. To whet your appetite, warm up with a drink at the bar before enjoying a pleasant meal and immersing yourself in the music session. LA MERCÈ 2007 Catarsis de Fiesta Mayor Texto: Carolina Zerpa

Aunque parezca imposible, durante 4 días consecutivos nuestra ciudad se inunda de más fiesta y gente de lo normal; exposiciones gratis, castillos humanos, gigantes paseando por la rambla, un circo en la ciudadela, fuegos artificiales deleitando al ritmo de la música, escenarios y conciertos regados por doquier; pero... ¿alguien sabe por qué? En 1871 el ayuntamiento de Barcelona creó por primera vez un programa de actos extraordinarios para celebrar la festividad de la Mare de Déu de la Mercè, celebrado cada 24 de septiembre. Posteriormente se le dio un nuevo impulso con el primer encuentro de gigantes de toda Cataluña, concursos de Castells y por supuesto bailes de Sardana. Hoy con 15 años ya de BAM (Barcelona Acciò Musical) y una serie de actos de gran participación ciudadana, La Mercè ha adquirido un carácter eminentemente popular cautivando tanto a turistas como a los propios habitantes de la ciudad, aunque a veces preferiríamos escapar de tanta locura; por eso no podíamos dejar pasar esta oportunidad para mostrar un poco la catarsis urbana dentro de La Mercè...

Though it may seem impossible, for 4 consecutive days this city is inundated with more parties and people than normal; free exhibitions, human castles, giants strolling along the Rambla, a circus in the Ciudadela, fireworks set to musical rhythms, stages and concerts drowned in water, but… does anyone know why? In 1871 the Barcelona town hall created for the very first time a programme of extraordinary events to celebrate the Mare de Déu de la Mercè, commemorated every 24th September. This subsequently inspired the first meeting of giants in all Catalunya, contests in Castells and of course, dances in Sardana. Today, with 15 years of BAM (Barcelona Acciò Musical) and a series of events across the city, La Mercè has acquired an eminently popular character, captivating both tourists and local residents, although we sometimes prefer to escape the chaos; which is why we could not resist showing here a little of the urban catharsis inside La Mercè... 68
