LewistonPublicArtProject MuralforAcademyPark
Summer will bring new art projects to our Lower River Community enhancing Lewiston’s identity as an artistic and historic community that provides cultural experiences to visitors and residents alike.
The Lewiston Council on the Arts is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all and is proud to contribute to the region’s thriving environment of arts and cultural activities Working in partnership with the Village and the Town of Lewiston, and with the funding support of the Niagara River Greenway, the Lewiston Public Art Project has been designed and developed to enhance and create casual encounters with art that inspire and connect us all.
The goal of the Lewiston Public Art Project is to welcome visitors and trail users to Lewiston through the gateway to our community, Academy Park, and to encourage a longer stay in the area while exploring our beautiful Riverfront and the Shoreline Trail, both only a short walk or bike ride away.
Featured in the 2024 Public Art Project is a building mural for Academy Park Designed by Lewiston Artist Maureen Kellick, the mural will wrap around the Academy Park ‘comfort station’ on 9th Street.
The concept of the four-wall mural design is a sweeping, continuous image reflecting the natural beauty of Lewiston’s Niagara River Greenway our abundant orchards, vineyards, farmland and wildlife that also provides visitors, cyclers, and residents with photo ops on all four sides of the building.
Lewiston’s Academy Park building location is a central destination on the 14-plus mile bike trail from the Falls to the mouth of the River. Appropriately, the mural’s graphic depiction of the River’s gorge and escarpment region offers visual inspiration and a visitor-friendly destination stop within the Village of Lewiston. In a unique collaboration with fellow artist Dan Buttery, the project will blend the imagery of painting with a sculptural, 3D element, providing a special experience for viewers. Buttery’s sculptural additions to the mural will feature a dimensional, full scale tree-bench designed for the North wall, creating a beautiful spot to rest and take in the surrounding park, and, for a brief moment, become a “part” of the mural
Follow the progress of these exciting projects on the LCA website, FB and IG over the summer!

Invisible Threads: how objects connect us to our past
Jillian Kratts, a student in the Art History program at the American University of Rome, Italy, will share her progress photographing objects that had belonged to Italian families who had immigrated to Niagara Falls, New York, for a book: The History of the Italian Americans in Niagara Falls in 50 Objects
This event will include the opportunity for the public to bring items that they feel could be a part of this project. Objects that will be included are items that represent the daily life of the Italian immigrant.

Look for the history of the Lewiston Council on the Arts in each issue!
Betsy Naylon was a local prize-winning artist. She taught drawing and painting with the Niagara Falls Studio Group. She also was an instructor at Rosary Hill College. Much of her work depicted scenes from the past.
We are grateful for those who have chosen to honor their loved ones with a memorial donation to the Lewiston Council on the Arts in support of the programs the LCA provides to our community.
