Weekly Newsletter Spring 2018 Week 5 What a wonderful day of music at Upton House. We started the day with the staff choir followed by solo performances on the violin, flute and clarinet and beautiful singing solos and duets. The morning continued with the House Songs; St Andrew sang I’m Still Standing, St George sang Wake me Up by Avicii and St Christopher sang Shake it Off, a Taylor Swift song. Our judge for the morning Dr Charlotte Exon, Director of Music at Downe House, had a hard job as the standard was so high. This year St George were triumphant in the House Song, well done. Overall, the champions for the day were St Andrew. Congratulations St Andrew. Thank you Dr Exon and a big thank you to Miss Shafikova for organising the House Music Day. Everyone performed to such a high standard. After lunch we were delighted to welcome Dr Plant and the St John’s Beaumont choristers. The boys were incredible. They treated us to an afternoon recital which was truly inspiring. The boys sang with such passion and skill. The soloists on piano and violin were incredibly talented and Nathaniel’s performance of the music from Schindler’s List was breathtaking, bringing a tear to many eyes. Thank you so much St John’s Beaumont and thank you Dr Plant. It was very good to talk to parents at the coffee morning this week. I explained the main topics we are focused on here at Upton right now, and also mentioned the new School Development Plan. This plan runs from 20182021 and includes all areas of school life here. It is formulated with input from all key stakeholders and after half term we will offer an opportunity for parents to add to the plan with ideas and thoughts. We also discussed snacks and Mrs Newcombe, Ms James, Mrs Allies and I will meet straight after half term to find the best way forward to ensure a balance between biscuits, fruit, bread and other possible options. After half term we have much to look forward to, including the arrival of the ducklings on Monday 19 th February! I do hope you all have a very good half term. Rhian Thornton The Nursery children had a brilliant time exploring, making and eating pancakes. Tossing them and racing was not so easy, though brilliant fun! Sue Bish

Some of our Form 6 girls, Gabby, Anaya, Heather and Amelie, competed in a Maths Challenge this week at St John’s Beaumont. Split into 2 teams they came 11th and 16th out of 22 teams. Four of our Form 4 girls also rose to the challenge, at Eagle House, for the Spell It competition. They worked in pairs in tricky conditions and showed Upton at its best. They persevered despite some devilishly tricky questions and came joint 7th out of 22 and 13th out of 23 teams. Well done to them all. Melinda Ward and Jessica Smith Upton House School 1
