Weekly Newsletter Autumn 2018 Week 6 Harvest Festival was delightful this morning, thank you, children. Thank you Miss Shafikova, Mrs Newcombe, Mr McEvoy and Mr Witney. Beautiful singing enjoyed by all. Thank you also to everyone at Holy Trinity Church for allowing us to enjoy our Harvest in such a beautiful church. Reverend Pete and I raced back to school for the PreNursery and Nursery Harvest where the children sang Cauliflowers Fluffy and Dingle Dangle Scarecrow with great enthusiasm. They were all wonderful. Well done Little Upton. It has been a musical theme at Upton this week with the Prep girls performing in the Maidenhead Festival. Well done to all who performed and did so well. Some of them also visited Downe House to experience playing in an orchestra. We received a very warm welcome and the girls joined the large orchestra with great confidence and skill. It is always a delight to be in the classrooms with the children and see their work. The Monopoly adverts created by Form 5 this week were incredible and very professional. The girls’ posters explaining why reading is important were equally impressive & a pleasure to read. We are encouraging all the children to read as much as possible whether it is fiction, non-fiction, news or poetry. Verbal reasoning, which starts in Form 3, is based on knowledge of vocabulary. Reading increases and deepens each child’s vocabulary, allowing them to achieve well in verbal reasoning tasks. Reading is also, of course, a great source of enjoyment once a child finds the genre they love. Next week is Science week at Upton. We look forward to the many wonderful investigations planned, and very much hope you can join us for the Science Evening on Thursday October 18th. Rhian Thornton
We are really looking forward to sharing our love of science next week. We have a lot planned, including an assembly and workshops on states of matter, an exploration of space in a mobile planetarium, the Papplewick reptiles will be visiting with Mr Elkington and get ready to dress up as something linked to science for Friday’s mufti day. We will be sending home a science quiz – get all the answers correct to be in with a chance of winning a prize! Thursday’s Science Evening, 6-7pm, is open to all our families where there will be lots of fun activities for all ages. Remember to watch out for our daily tweets to see what we’ve been up to.
