The percentage of children with obesity issues in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. Childhood obesity can be caused by many factors including unhealthy nutritional habits, lifestyles, and a lack of physical activity. Along with this, obese children are more likely to have low self-esteem and can become ashamed of their bodies. Depression ingrained into the early developmental part of life increases the chances of clinical depression.
empowering through design
App-Abling is a team of Communication Design seniors and graduates from Texas State University. The team addresses social issues in order to enhance the lives of people. The apps presented show different solutions to solve for childhood obesity including nutritional learning, mental health nourishment, and fitness encouragement. These apps were developed in an advanced interactive mobile design course called, Interactive III, under the supervision of assistant professor, Hannah Park.

Munch Punch
tinyurl.com/mymonsterapp My Monster is a virtual buddy and diet log targeting children between the ages of 6 and 10. The incorporation of a virtual buddy that is effected by the child’s eating habits, helps the child make the connection between their food consumption and the consequences. A game and reward system keeps the child entertained and coming back for more.
This meal tracking phone application is designed to educate children ages 10-14 about nutrition labels. Bubble Buddy not only gives children the tools to fight against childhood obesity, but it also uses character development and item discovery to provide a fun and rewarding activity that will allow them to lead healthier lives as they grow into young adults.
Munch Punch is a game app that promotes healthy eating habits in a playful and simple indirect way. The app changes players perceptions of healthy eating habits by awarding the player for making healthy choices.
