Parents offered options for new school year Choices include in-person or virtual learning instruction BY CHRISTOPHER DUNN CHRISTOPHER@FAYETTE-NEWS.NET
Amid the uncertainty of returning to school in the fall while COVID-19 cases climb,
parents in Fayette will have a say in how their students attend classes. The Fayette County Public School System sent a letter to families on June 23 laying out two options: brick
and mortar or full-time virtual learning. The brick and mortar model offers three different instructional settings based on the severity of COVID-19 cases at the individual schools and surrounding communities, and different schools could be at the three different levels (green, yellow, and red) at any given time. The green level is for no or
low spread of COVID-19 in the school or the community. Students will receive face-to-face instruction five days per week. The yellow level is for minimal to moderate spread. Schools will implement a hybrid model where students are divided into two groups that attend school on alternating schedules where they would receive face-to-face instruction two days per week and utilize virtual learning
options the other three days. The red level is for a substantial spread, and all students will participate in distance learning. Transportation will be provided, and the After School Program will be offered at all elementary schools. School meals will be offered every day that students are in the building. SEE OPTIONS, PAGE A2

Two deputies fired in shooting case BY JOHN THOMPSON JOHN@FAYETTE-NEWS.NET
Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb confirmed June 25 that two officers involved in a chase and shooting are no longer with the department. Babb said it was strictly an employment decision. What started out as a routine traffic stop on May 30 ended in three different police agencies working a case that ended in an officer-involved shooting. According to a GBI press release, the Fayetteville
Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving at 7:38 a.m. May 30. The vehicle did not stop and fled from officers. The Fayetteville Police Department then requested assistance from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. “A short time later, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the vehicle in the area of Grady Drive in Clayton County, driving through numerous yards. At some point, the vehicle came to a stop, and officers attempted to take the juvenile driver of the vehicle
into custody, however, the vehicle accelerated toward the officers,” the release reads. The deputies then discharged their firearms, striking the subject. “The subject was transported to a local hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries. A deputy sustained minor injuries from the incident. Charges against the driver are forthcoming,” said the release. The Sheriff’s Office then called the GBI to investigate an officer-involved shooting.
