Personally, I birthed two children (both adults now), lived in three different states, worked a variety of jobs before landing here with the (585) crew, and traveled to several different countries and U.S. states. Suffice it to say that a lot has happened to me and the world these last twenty-five years. As (585) Kids continue to grow and thrive as publication dedicated to families and children, I feel very proud of all the content we

Did you know that only three African elephants reside in the entire state of New York? Standing between eight and ten feet tall, these endangered modernage giants live just a short drive away at Seneca Park Zoo!
Families can experience the majesty of the African elephants at Seneca Park Zoo with Genny C., Lilac, and Moki. These three amazing animals are not only tall and mighty but also incredibly intelligent, playful, and charming. According to Seneca Park Zoo, each of these elephants can respond to and understand more than fifty verbal commands.
Each of the zoo’s three female elephants has their own unique story and personality, which, for being the only African Elephants in the state, makes visiting each one truly special. According to Lindsay Brinda, Seneca Park Zoo’s assistant curator, the average African Elephant lifespan is only 39.5 years, which all three of the zoo’s elephants have proudly exceeded, thriving well into their senior years.
Genny C., the eldest member of the herd, is forty-seven years old, and came to Seneca Park Zoo with Lilac in 1979. Genny C. and Lilac were born in 1977 and 1978, respectively. Despite her age, she remains full of energy. At around 8,000 pounds, Genny C. is the tallest amongst the three elephants.
Only a year younger than Genny C., Lilac is a mighty fortysix years old. Although she is smaller in size at just 7,000 pounds and the shortest amongst the three elephants, she makes up for it with her charming personality.
Moki, who joined Seneca Park Zoo in 2015 from Jacksonville, was born in Zimbabwe in 1982, making her forty-two years old, according to Brinda. Although she weighs the most at 9,000 pounds, that doesn’t slow her down.
“Moki is the most energetic and she’s pretty intelligent. She’s always willing to figure out a problem. She’s easy to train and she can figure out enrichment toys easily,” Brinda says. This not only shows the impressiveness of Moki’s mind, but also the various ways the zoo helps to engage with the creativity and wit of these magnificent animals.
Enrichment toys are objects or activities specifically designed to stimulate an animal’s natural behaviors, as well as encourage problem-solving and improve their mental and physical capabilities. These enrichment toys help improve the overall well-being of the zoo’s elephants by simulating challenges they could face in the wild, like toys that release food or treats when manipulated correctly, as well as puzzle feeders that promote cognitive stimulation.
Other examples for enrichment toys can include tree stumps or logs, to simulate an elephant marking their territory in the wild, or balls and large rubber toys that they can push, roll, or carry, to help them exercise their muscles more and improve their coordination skills. These toys are important in preventing boredom, promoting natural, instinctual behaviors, and reducing stress.
Brinda talks about the intricate care that goes into

ensuring their elephants live long, happy, and healthy lives, saying that the elephants are “spoiled rotten.”
“Our girls are all geriatric. I mean, because they’re in their forties, they are considered geriatric elephants, so we do a lot with geriatric care for them, which is unique to our zoo. They’ve had acupuncture, laser therapy, and they get blood draws for that. We do footcare on them at least once a month, too. They get the whole work-up.”
The zoo’s vet sees them all once a week to make sure they are staying as healthy as possible as they get older. These treatments are part of a holistic approach to their care, ensuring the elephants’ comfort and well-being as they age.
Feeding one of these giant ladies is quite a feat. On a typical day, Brinda says, each elephant gets about two bales of hay, which are around thirty-five pounds each. “They also get three to seven pounds of a special pellet. It has all their vitamins and minerals in it and is made especially for elephants. And then they can get up to like three to eight pounds of produce during the day from training,” Brinda says.
In addition, the elephants are given a cute little treat when it comes to not-so-fun vet visits. “When the vet comes and has to give them a shot or something a little bit scarier, they get bagels,” Brinda says.
So far, all three elephants are healthy as can be, despite
Genny C. and Moki having some arthritis, which is quite impressive given their old age. Although Lilac is smaller than the other elephants, Brinda says her size is a good thing. “For smaller animals, arthritis doesn’t get as bad as the larger animals. So that’s good for her at least.”
Although both come from the same family, African elephants and Asian elephants are quite distinct. African elephants have interesting features such as their large ears, which are shaped like the continent of Africa. In addition, female African elephants also have tusks, whereas in Asian elephants, only the males have tusks. “And if you look at their trunk tips, they have two finger-like adaptations so they can grasp something as small as a piece of grass with that trunk. With Asian elephants, they only have one,” Brinda says.
Although the zoo is currently in off-season, they do offer a “behind-the-scenes tour” that is sold on Sundays where visitors can come meet the elephants up close. “You get to see the back, be up close to the elephants, and we take you around the barn for a tour,” Brinda says.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your family and head to Seneca Park Zoo to meet New York’s only African elephants: Genny C., Lilac, and Moki! Whether you’re an animal lover or just looking for a fun, educational adventure, the zoo guarantees an experience you won’t forget.
The Hodinöšyö:nih: Not just “people of the past”
— BY BEJIGANUNGMIGIZZIIKWE CAMBRIE ECKERT
The Rochester Museum and Science Center (RMSC) has unveiled a new permanent exhibition that brings to life the rich heritage and cultural continuity of the Hodinöšyö:nih (hoe-dee-no-SHOW-nee) people, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. This exhibit offers a fascinating journey into the narratives and experiences of Indigenous Peoples, or Native Americans, particularly focusing on the original peoples of New York State, such as the Hodinöšyö:nih. Curated by Jamie Jacobs (Hoya’danä:gwa’d, Tonawanda Seneca, Turtle Clan), this exhibit opened on December 6, 2024. It provides an immersive experience that aims to educate and inspire visitors of all ages, particularly with those between the fourth and eighth grade. Kids can walk through a glass longhouse, analyze and talk about contemporary Hodinöšyö:nih artists’ works, and explore much more in this hands-on exhibit.
The exhibit is designed to highlight the concept of “narrative sovereignty” amongst Indigenous Peoples, particularly the Hodinöšyö:nih, allowing them to share their stories in their own words and through their own art. “The exhibit features quite a few layers of different subjects,” explains Jacobs, managing curator of the Rock Foundation collections at RMSC. “One being that Native Americans and Indigenous Peoples were able to have narrative sovereignty, so the artists were able to provide their stories with their own words.” According to
collaborated with Indigenous artists in commissioning new artworks that are now on display in this exhibit.
These artists include: Negwë:nö’döh Hayden Haynes (Seneca Nation of Indians, Deer Clan–bone and antler carver), Katsitsionni Fox (Akwesasne Mohawk, Bear Clan–potter and filmmaker), Haiwënta’ Kenith “Nek” Jonathan (Tonawanda Seneca Territory, Wolf Clan–lacrosse stick maker), Iakonikohnrio Tonia LoranGalban (Akwesasne Mohawk, Bear Clan–basketmaker), Natasha Smoke Santiago (Akwesasne Mohawk, Turtle Clan–ceramicist), Ganöwögë:n Coreen Thompson (Tonawanda Seneca Nation, Bear Clan–textile artist), and Ganawödiyo Kyle Dowdy, Jr. (Tuscarora Nation, Bear Clan–wood carver).
This exhibit incorporates the perspectives and stories of the Hodinöšyö:nih people and helps others in that community to “reconnect with traditional material culture and knowledge” through rematriation.
This approach is part of a broader movement to reconnect museums’ cultural artifacts with the Indigenous communities from which they originate, like the Hodinöšyö:nih people. Historically, museums have been criticized for practices that involved “extractive” acquisition of these culturally significant artifacts, as well as information, often without proper context or consent from the communities
they represent. Although museums have frequently displayed and interpreted Hodinöšyö:nih histories and heritage in the past, this was often done without actual Hodinöšyö:nih perspectives and permission from their community.
This exhibit aims to rectify these wrongs and foster a deeper connection between Indigenous cultural artifacts and their communities, particularly among the Hodinöšyö:nih people. “We want to make our collections more open to Indigenous Peoples and reconnect them to physical and spiritual aspects, so they can have
Those with a tribal ID will now be able to enter the RMSC free, a recent change and initiative that aims to welcome local Indigenous community members to the museum and acknowledge their vital role in cultural preservation, as well as mending the museum’s relationship among these communities. This is part of the museum’s broader efforts to “correct past harms” and make Indigenous culture more accessible to its original custodians as the RMSC is built upon stolen Indigenous land.
collaboratively with Indigenous artists and RMSC staff. This process involved careful consideration of how to present Indigenous cultural artifacts in a respectful and accurate manner by involving the Hodinöšyö:nih community. Jacobs notes, “We all brought together our own ideas; not every idea in the exhibition was mine, but we did our best to accommodate everybody that had creativity, especially the artists.”
of the exhibit’s theme, which showcases ongoing traditions of Hodinöšyö:nih art and craftwork. Those who would like to explore this exhibit will see intricate carvings that echo the artistry of ancestors from thousands of years ago. Although Indigenous Peoples have typically been depicted throughout the years as “peoples of the ancient past rather than contemporary people,” Hodinöšyö:nih artists today
work,” Jacobs says.
The exhibit not only educates curious visitors about the past, but also addresses the present and the future, as well as common misconceptions about Indigenous Peoples. By engaging with Indigenous communities and artists like the Hodinöšyö:nih, the RMSC hopes to inspire other museums to adopt similar inclusive practices, Jacobs explains. The ultimate goal is to “encourage other museums in the area, if not the country, to reach out to the Indigenous community for information,” as well as to “hire artists and pay them appropriately.”
Parents and children visiting this educational new exhibit will gain a valuable perspective on the living culture of the Hodinöšyö:nih, understanding these communities are not just relics of the past, but that they are a rather vibrant and contemporary society.
For families looking for an enriching educational experience for themselves and their kids, this exhibit at the RMSC is a must-see. It offers a rare opportunity for kids to explore the resilient legacy of the Hodinöšyö:nih people and engage their stories in a meaningful and realistic way.
A NOTE FROM CRAFTY CAT
Happy winter, crafty kids! Do you enjoy watching the differently colors birds in the snow? I am especially fond of yellow finches and cardinals. This easy feeder will attract some feathered friends to your yard.
As always, please remember to ask an adult for permission before starting any craft or art project.
Please send pictures of your creation to jmilliman@585kids.com to be included in the next issue of (585) Kids!
GATHER THESE ITEMS:
A bundt pan for large feeder or donut pan for small feeders
Bird food
Fresh or pre-frozen cranberries (optional, but they add a pop of color!)
Ribbon: larger feeder needs about 30 inches of 3 inch wide ribbon; the donut size feeders need about 12 inches of halfinch wide ribbon
STEP 1
Add bird feed and a few cranberries into the bundt pan or donut pan. Cover the seed mixture with water. Note: The cranberries will float.
STEP 2
If the outside temperature is below 32 degrees F, you can set the feeder outside overnight to freeze. If the temperature is above 32 degrees F, you can place the pan in the freezer overnight.
STEP 3
After completely frozen, the feeder is ready to unmold. (Wait until the temperature outside is at or below 32 degrees F before hanging or the feeder will melt too quickly.) To unmold bundt pan size feeder: set on table or countertop for 5 to 10 minutes to warm up a bit. The donut size feeder only requires a few minutes at room temperature. Turn over the pan on flat surface to remove feeder wreath.
STEP 4
Thread one end of the ribbon through the wreath center and knot both ends together at top to form hanger. Place feeder on a strong branch and enjoy birdwatching!
CRAFTY CAT TIPS:
- If the frozen wreath is difficult to unmold, lay a warm washcloth on the bottom and sides of pan to slightly melt the ice.
- Some birds will eat dried cranberries if you don't have fresh or frozen.
