STAND TALL, STAND TOGETHER ANNUAL REPORT TO OUR COMMUNIT Y 2 01 9–2 0 2 0
Dear UPrep Community, The 2019–2020 academic year presented challenges unlike any our school has seen before. In March, with very little notice, our faculty and staff were required to pivot to online learning due to the threat of the coronavirus. Thanks to the leadership of our Interim Head of School Lila Lohr and the commitment, flexibility, and creativity of our faculty and staff, our students transitioned to a new way of learning from home. This transition was successful thanks to our parents, faculty, staff, and students, who shared a common goal and worked together to accomplish a seemingly impossible task. With learning happening online, our UPrep community connections became more important than ever. Our counselors, advisors, deans, and others worked tirelessly to ensure that our students and families felt connected, engaged, and supported. Our Technology Department made sure our students had all the tools they needed to be successful. Even our senior class achieved their goal of graduating in style—with a celebration at the Evergreen Speedway! In countless ways, the UPrep community continued to stand tall and stand together—to serve our collective purpose of creating intellectually courageous, socially responsible global citizens. I am so grateful to

support, our Puma Fund and UPrep Together campaigns raised more than $1.6 million for the school this year, the most raised in a single year. These uncertain times have made it difficult for some in our community, and I am pleased to report that, with your generosity, we have met the needs of those families. To date, $329,028 in additional financial assistance has been distributed to UPrep families through the Temporary Emergency Financial Aid Fund. I hope you’ll enjoy reading how your gifts have made it possible for the UPrep community to stand tall and stand together this year, despite many challenges. Your support of our school— and especially of our students and faculty—means so much. I feel fortunate be a member of our resilient community during this extraordinary school year. In partnership,

ALUMNI COME TOGETHER FOR UPREP This year, the Alumni Board, under the leadership of President Blake Titcomb ’09, inspired fellow alumni to stay connected while supporting UPrep in ways big and small during a challenging time. In addition to our in-person events held last summer and fall, our first-ever virtual Alumni Weekend featured beloved faculty members and alumni speakers and included alumni from across the country. Together over the last year, our alumni supported the Puma Fund, the Endowed Financial Aid Fund, and the Temporary Emergency Financial Aid Fund, for a total of $98,034. On campus and virtually during our school closure, our alumni continued to serve as teachers, coaches, staff, and trustees. Due to coronavirus forcing the closure of many college campuses, Pumas stepped up to help our students and their families during the college application and decision process. Partnering with the College Counseling Office, more than 80 alumni volunteered their time to share what the college experience is like at their institution as part of the new Puma College Connections Program. In May, Alumni Board members supported our first-ever virtual UPrep Together event by serving as panelists and sharing the alumni experience over the span of 40 years. Alumni continue to stand together, assisting our UPrep community in many ways, and we are grateful for their commitment.

collaboration helped our faculty and staff evolve their practice quickly,” says Jeff. Once we moved to online learning, UPrep’s tech support made sure our community would stay connected through ensuring all teachers and students had the necessary devices, Wi-Fi connections, and tech support. A huge shift like this would not have been possible without the financial support made possible by the Puma Fund. We are so grateful to our donors for providing funds that allowed for such a quick pivot to an online format. This support meant students engaged in high-quality learning during quarantine. Students kept active in Physical Education classes like Yoga. Science teachers sent lab kits to students’ homes. Faculty connected with students through classroom time, creating a sense of shared community while we were physically apart.

Last fall, the Middle School Robotics Club expanded from two teams to six teams, including one team composed solely of girls, and the Upper School Robotics Club added a third team. This spring, both clubs met online. Noah Roth, 6th grade, describes the ups and downs of the innovative process. “The tester tests the designs in front of us online, and it’s fun to watch the designs fail, since they fail pretty spectacularly,” says Noah. Speakers engaged with our students all year long. Astronaut Dr. Michael Massimino and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal spoke during assemblies last fall. During online learning, student affinity groups and the Diversity and Community Office hosted more than a dozen community-wide conversations on Zoom; speakers included Lauren Ashley Smith, the head writer of A Black Lady Sketch Show, and Jennifer Smith, co-founder of the Seattle Clemency Project.

They created an Instagram Senior Spotlights series, honoring each athlete with photos and quotes from team members and coaches. Last winter, festive in-person presentations by students in Fine Arts classes included the Winter Concert, a musical version of The Tempest, and the Winter Visual Arts Showcase. This spring, Vocal Music Teacher Tim Blok and Director of Facilities Martin Pawlina delivered instruments to marimba students. Students in Visual Art classes hosted end-of-year shows at their homes with guests visiting via Zoom, and music students recorded performances that were woven together to create the Spring Concert, which premiered on YouTube.

Thanks to funds raised from the UPrep Together event, the TEFAF is currently providing tuition assistance to our families who need support due to the global pandemic. At press time, 25 students are now receiving aid from this fund, and the awards from this critical fund total $329,028.

The UPrep Commencement took place at the Evergreen Speedway in Monroe on the evening of June 19. The creative location was a suggestion from graduates Emily LyonsHammond and Camille Neutz. The ceremony began with opening remarks from Interim Head of School Lila Lohr, Head of Upper School Ken Jaffe, and ASB President Michael Gary. Every graduate was honored with a vignette, and they stepped out of their decorated cars to receive their diplomas. A joyous victory lap concluded the ceremony. Cindy Funes, parent of graduate Jason, appreciated that UPrep came up with a graduation that brought the community together. “We loved the festiveness of the decorated cars and seeing all of the faculty sitting on their cars waving and cheering as we passed,” says Cindy.
Rita Egari, parent of graduate Layli, says her family loved cheering and honking the car horn as each graduate received their diploma. “We are forever grateful for the staff and faculty that put in endless hours to make graduation unforgettable for our seniors!” she adds. www.universityprep.org

T H A N K YO U, L I L A! Our Interim Head of School Lila Lohr led our community through the 2019–2020 school year with skill and grace. We are thankful for her positive attitude and her steadfast guidance through an unexpectedly turbulent year. We will miss her warm hellos in the hallways and on Zoom, and we look forward to seeing her at a future Grandparents and Grandfriends Day. With two grandchildren who attend UPrep, Lila is still a Puma!
Lila, we thank you for your exceptional leadership and commitment to the UPrep community.
Keep in touch with us on social media!
