Dear UPrep Families and Friends,
”
As I introduce you to this year’s annual report, I want to express my gratitude for the depth and breadth of the contributions you made over the last year. With your generous support, we were able to provide our students with transformational learning experiences. In many cultures, the role of the village is central to the child’s ability to learn and thrive. It’s clear to me that the UPrep community came together over the course of the 2018-2019 school year, creating a cohesive village for our students. Four years ago, the UPrep Board of Trustees identified a set of ambitious goals that we shared with you in our Strategic Plan 2020. This plan allowed us to be clear on our priorities and to focus on what mattered the most— student powered learning that enables each of our students to become intellectually courageous, socially responsible citizens of the world. During the 2018-2019 academic school year, our progress on our strategic plan was on full display for our community. This report includes just a few examples—from embedding social emotional learning into the daily life of our school, to launching 35 intensives, to our diverse co-curricular programs. Our students benefited greatly from our collective commitment to inclusion, invention, and inspiration. While change was at the center of our school last year, our superb faculty and staff showed up in big and small ways to provide the steady leadership that was fundamental to our forward momentum. Once again, thank you so much for your belief in UPrep—our community, students, faculty, and staff. Your support makes the progress described in this report possible. I feel fortunate to be part of a community that feels like a student-centered village. In partnership,
Cheryl Scott PRESIDENT, BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2018-2020

2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY
Learning U
Prep is a place where students are seen, known, and nurtured. This belonging builds a base from which our students can grow—
as they reach to become intellectually courageous, socially responsible global citizens. During the 2018-2019 school year, we continued to implement our Strategic Plan 2020 as a means to support and enhance student powered learning. Our focus on social emotional learning buoyed our culture of inclusion. New academic programming through intensives fostered invention and collaborative student-led learning experiences both on and off campus. Teachers inspired students to strive for excellence in the classroom, on stage, and as participants in 53 teams and more than 65 clubs. Since UPrep “feels like home,” students felt safe enough to take risks— stretching themselves both within and beyond UPrep’s community— while discovering who they are and working toward what they want to achieve in our world.

Building An Inclusive Community Social emotional learning strengthens students’ skills and supports inclusion Starting with the 2018-2019 school year, UPrep faculty included a full time Social and Emotional Learning Coordinator, Emily Schorr Lesnick. Hired as part of Strategic Plan 2020, Schorr Lesnick anchors UPrep’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program, which maintains and maximizes an optimal learning environment framework. Our SEL program helps our community to see, support, and nourish students as they build resiliency, manage stress, develop empathy, clarify their personal values, and make responsible decisions. “SEL helps students understand who they are as a person, what they bring to others, and how to effectively bring themselves to school and to the world,” said Schorr Lesnick. “Unless a student is comfortable in their own skin and in their community, they can’t reach for what could be theirs.” A study published in the journal Child Development in 2011 showed that SEL programs increased students’ academic performance by 11 percent, compared to students who didn’t participate in programs like this. During the school year, SEL activities were integrated into Community Time and within Advisories. Schorr Lesnick also engaged with the faculty at division meetings and coached colleagues on how to infuse SEL into their work and classrooms. Additionally, SEL and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) began a pilot collaboration. Called DEISEL, this natural partnership has the goal of building a more empathetic, inclusive, and resilient community for all. Our ability to cultivate this spirit of inclusion comes from our generous financial supporters and we are so grateful for donors at all giving levels. Last year, a record 89 percent of families donated to the Puma Fund!

Inventing New Learning Intensive classes create new learning opportunities After two years of curriculum planning and schedule changes, our students participated in their first intensive courses in January and May. We’re one of a small handful of independent schools in the nation offering credit-bearing intensives. At UPrep, intensives are three-week terms during which students take one class full-time, earning the same credit as a one semester class. This innovative learning style aims to help students attain the knowledge, skills, and thinking dispositions needed to successfully navigate our rapidly changing world. Faculty—often on interdisciplinary teams—created two-thirds of the 35 intensives classes by transforming existing semester classes; the other third were new. Intensive classes allowed for time for work off campus, opportunities to engage with experts in a given field, and the ability to focus on extended projects. Students went on a total of 135 field trips, nearby at places like the Seattle International Film Festival’s SIFF Center and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; across the state from the Olympic Peninsula to the Grand Coulee Dam; and around the world through Global Link experiences in Colombia, Atlanta, and Montgomery. Class activities guided students to connect complex ideas and theories to practical experience in meaningful ways. Intensives created a structure for deeply collaborative, community-focused, student-led learning experiences. While taking an all-day class for three weeks was a new way of learning, nearly 7 out of 10 students said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the experience. We are thankful for the financial support of our dedicated community. With this funding, UPrep can continually bring innovations to the curriculum. This year, your generosity led to the creation of 305 works of art within both intensive terms; 360 daily reflections written during the Upper School Statistics intensive; and 1,608 miles traveled during the Middle School Washington State History intensive. Intensives are your dollars in action!

Leadership Inspires Students Co-curricular activities inspire risk-taking and leadership During their time at UPrep, students are encouraged to “try on” a variety of roles within our community. Often this exploration takes place outside the classroom. When a student says, “I might like to try Ethics Bowl,” they’re exemplifying our fundamental belief that trying something new is worthwhile. Coaches and facilitators nurture student courage and confidence. These relationships inspire students to learn skills outside their comfort zone, take risks, and develop leadership qualities. As teams, clubs, or performing groups work toward a common goal, each participant takes on a meaningful responsibility, from being a driver on the robotics team to working the light board on a stage crew. During the past school year, 22 Middle School clubs and 54 Upper School clubs met to explore new passions. A wide array of both Middle School and Upper School clubs included Girls Who Code, Ethics Club, Creative Arts Society, Youth Against Racial Discrimination (YARD), Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Jurassic Club, and Drums and Dances, which focuses on music from West Africa. Thanks to our no-cut sports policy, both experienced players and novices can grow and develop through athletic endeavors. During 2018-2019, the athletic department coordinated 53 teams and managed 75 coaches who provided an athletic opportunity for 437 students—serving 75 percent of our student body! When our donors support the Puma Fund, they enable UPrep to invest in our co-curricular programs, which create unique relationships between facilitators and participants that lead to student growth. The powerful learning that happens outside of the classroom speaks to UPrep’s commitment to develop each student’s full potential.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP INSPIRES FIRST UPREP STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM On a sunny May afternoon in Yakima, the Varsity Baseball team became 1A State Champions with an 8-7 win over Seattle Christian. This remarkable season exemplifies the student-led learning that takes place within UPrep’s co-curricular activities. “The athletic field is where many kids take ownership over their learning,” said Athletic Director Rebecca Moe. “The three seniors asked for a meeting with the new coaches before the season began. They had one goal in mind: to win the state championship.” This combined leadership between the coaches and seniors brought together a tenacious yet small roster with three seniors, three juniors, five sophomores, and four freshman. “Being on this team taught us the tenets of having fun, accountability, and having respect for coaches and teammates,” said team member Ben Rothman, ’20. “The leadership of these seniors gave every player the opportunity to learn and fail and get better. Every player was inspired to leap to the level it took to become state champions; it was a total team effort,” said Moe. www.universityprep.org

Volunteers Strengthen the Community Families support UPrep in many ways by generously giving financial gifts, volunteering their time, and by attending various school events. UPrep is grateful to have hundreds of volunteers who serve on our committees, Parent Council, and the Board of Trustees, to name a few. All of our successful programs and events, such as our annual Puma Fund, UPrep Together celebration, and open houses for prospective families, are made possible by the tireless work of many behind the scenes. Our volunteers also play a key role in welcoming new families to the school each year and by building the important connections that make UPrep feel like home.

Engaging UPrep Alumni UPrep alumni continue to support the school in a myriad of ways, and our alumni network continues to grow and evolve. Alumni serve as teachers, coaches, staff, LaunchPad mentors, Mock Trial advisors, and Trustees. With leadership from the Alumni Board, key alumni volunteers work throughout the year to provide opportunities for UPrep alumni to reconnect with one another and the school. Our signature events hosted by the UPrep Alumni Association last year include Class Reunions, our Mariners Game Event, and the Winter Party. We were also thrilled to see alumni in attendance at the annual UPrep Together event, highlighting our alums’ desire to support the school financially as well. More and more alumni choose to show their gratitude to UPrep through gifts in support of both the Puma Fund and the Endowed Financial Aid Fund. Alumni gave a total of $37,131 during 2018-2019. We are so grateful for their continued support.

UPrep Together – The UPrep community celebrated UPrep’s mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion by coming together at our annual spring fundraiser, UPrep Together. More than 250 attendees enjoyed a festive evening at Block 41 in Belltown and raised their paddles in support of our Endowed Financial Aid Fund. This exciting event featured a program showcasing student performers and inspiring guest speakers. Thanks in part to an inspirational challenge match provided by an anonymous alumni parent, our community made a collective gift of $504,330. The powerful generosity displayed at this event exemplifies our community’s commitment to a comprehensive financial aid package that benefits one in six students. Funds raised will help ensure that all of our students are able to immerse themselves fully in the UPrep experience. Many thanks to the members of the UPrep Together Committee who worked diligently to make this event happen and to the many donors who made this effort a rousing success!
