Editors Editors note note issue Sacha6 lys Upraw. issue 6 This month, we thought we’d play around with some 3D for fun and giggles. Our very own Quinnbot went and got a 3D tattoo with the guys at INK studio all for the ‘cause’; nothing to do with wanting a rad 3D tattoo! All in all, we’ve had some fun putting this issue together with a pair of 3D glasses on, looking like serious cyber geeks the whole time. And loving it. So whilst bringing out our inner child, or just reinforcing it, Nick Baines discovered his favourite, EVER, chilli cheese chips at Genève in Westbourne (which is saying something, considering he’s travelled the world on a food tasting duty), and I have realised that I need to go travelling. But I’m going to wait

until I have all the knowledge I need from our new travel instalments, written by travelling friends of ours, out on their paths right now, this second. Each month, we will now bring you the ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ of where and where not to go when travelling the world, so that when you decide to pack up with nothing but a pair of fresh pants and a toothbrush - you know exactly how to plan your time away. But whilst in Bournemouth, we continue to bring together a community of super awesome people, and highlight the cool stuff this town has got going on. The talent that oozes from Dorset is mind blowing, and it’s so rad for us to find something new each and every month.

ZOE LARKINS - LOVE FROM HETTY AND DAVE http://lovefromhettyanddave.blogspot.co.uk

When I first came to Bournemouth I stumbled upon the most magical shop window in Pokesdown when I entered the lady busily making magic behind the counter was the glorious Miss Larkins! Zoe Larkins is the inspired designer and maker behind the covetable hand stitched leather jewellery and accessories label, ’Love From Hetty & Dave’. A Silver Smithing graduate of Kent Institute of Art & Design in 2001, Zoe was soon drawn to the more tactile qualities of leather & textiles and the possibilities for original and eclectic designs. Inspired by South American folk art, vintage design and 1950s kitsch, by 2004 Zoe had begun making her own range of hand stitched nappa leather handbags, purses, brooches, and necklaces, successfully selling on London’s Portobello and Spitalfields markets and soon establishing a cult following.

EDEN – EYELASH EXTENSIONS The newest cosmetic trend that is becoming the most popular way of creating longer, thicker and more dramatic lashes. Lasting up to six weeks, remaining waterproof and comfortable to wear, these elite lash extensions will ensure you look pretty from the moment you wake up. These lashes are available in several styles with varying volume and length. Unlike other lashes on the market, they are pre-curled, resulting in a natural extension to the lashes that will last the full length of the real lash cycle. Involving so much more expertise than just glueing lashes on top of existing lashes, the technique isolates one lash at a time, working individually on every row of lashes, to ensure a natural and beautiful extension to your existing lashes. These eyelash extensions will last for the full life cycle of a natural lash. The average cycle is 60 days, which is the amount of time it takes for a natural lash to grow in, and fall out. Flutter recommends touch-up appointments every two to four weeks, to fill in the areas where the natural lashes have fallen out and new lashes are growing in. Especially concentrating on your eye area, it is important to get this treatment with a source that you know and trust, so having watched Sandy at Eden work her magic, we have found you a place that we can whole heartedly recommend. Ben Hamill tattoo artist TATTOO ARTIST BEN HAMILL

Photography: Toby Lewis Thomas // Words: Steven Quinn

B en Hammill likes a challenge. B

Growing up in a world that is still very sceptical of people with tattoo’s covering a person’s body would have shown him that some challenges should be relished and not feared. He’s been running Ink Studios tattoo parlour on Ashley Rd for over 5 years and despite business picking up and a recent second studio opening in Bournemouth town centre, there have been some challenges along the way. When he first started tattooing the standard and approach taken by his then boss never sat well. More interested in taking customers money than artistic integrity meant that his protégé, Ben walked away from the business entirely. Disillusioned with the emphasis being put on quantity over quality. Something that local surf powerhouse Animal recognised, Ben applied and beat around 500 applicants to a role in their graphic design team, citing the ‘edginess’ his former career had given him as the thing that made him stand out.

In the intervening years, they’ve turned Ink Studios into a home of some of the countries’ finest portrait artists, as well has covering all other types of tattooing with style. So much so that he can’t fit them all under one roof. We decided to visit the new studio, underneath Mane Street Hair at 104 Old Christchurch Road, to see if he was up for a challenge from UPRAW. You may or may not have realised but this issue has a somewhat 3D approach. So we thought we’d get Ben to do what he does best, although with a little difference. “I’ve always wanted to do a 3D tattoo, but when people ask if I know if it works I like to be honest and tell them I just don’t know. That usually puts them off”. But not us; Ben drew something up and as you can see from the pictures we soon got to work. “I like to do things that I’ve not tried before when working, always trying to push myself to learn more and make myself a better artist.”

But this became another challenge, whilst it was the thing that secured him the job, the edge he brought to his work was constantly questioned. Hammill sensed some hypocrisy, “Stand up and be yourself, now fall in line”.

We think he’s pretty great, but don’t take our word alone, go and see him in the new studio and see for yourselves and if you really want to see what he’s capable of then We’re definitely glad that we did. SQ.

This spurred him to take a step back towards tattooing, but this time he wanted things his way. His old boss welcomed him home with open arms, then quickly flew the coop. Hammill opened the shop one morning not knowing where in the world the boss was, only knowing that it definitely wasn’t the UK. The next day the bailiffs arrived. Instead of doing what most would have, he stayed. He turned things around, paid the debts and tried to bring a bit of professionalism to a profession that is only now getting the respect that it deserves.

Upraw visits smokin aces for the best whiskey experience in town

UPRAW 6

Photography: Toby Lewis Thomas

As I sit with JJ, the proprietor of A Smokin Aces, we chill out on the red pin cushioned booths, listening to ‘The Heavy, How you like me now’ in the background. The first thing to catch your eyes is an impressive back bar full to the nines, boasting a range of nearly 200 different spirits. The bar is quite the focal point, bringing a whole new dynamic to Bournemouth drink culture. It’s like sitting in a downtown bar in the middle of New York, a little escape. There are a range of homemade infused spirits on the top shelf that immediately grab my attention, from raspberry infused vodka, cinnamon infused monkey shoulder, to simple homemade lemonade.

I have been coming to Smokin’ Aces from the first day it opened, and have never in my whole time requested a straight up drink. The best thing about these guys are their tailor-made, boutique cocktails. It’s just a matter of what spirit and flavours you like, and they will without fail, throw together exactly what it is you wanted without you even knowing it. But no drink is ever the same. For those of you who know what they like, these trained mixologist will make it like no other, but if you are looking to try something new, then they are always creating new concoctions. If they are not ageing their whiskey in an oak barrel, they are setting your drinks on fire and filling your glass with orange caviar - there is nothing like it. Every part of Smokin Aces has a story behind it. ‘Hey JJ, why the guitar on your wall?’ he replies ‘ Jack Daniels sent it o ver, it’s a birthday edition fender guitar in custom made presentation box - it has a special placards saying ‘to Smokin Aces, from your friends at Jack Daniels’. That’s pretty cool. And Jack Daniels, along with most of the other spirits the stock on their shelves, love these guys. With their very own unique rustic but private bespoke JD Whiskey Lounge, where the walls consist of 650 lit up JD bottles, which is pretty striking to say the least, making it the perfect place to engage an intimate atmosphere compared to all the rock and roll happening upstairs!

“This is probably the best Jack Daniels branding in the country, if not the world.” Jack Daniels UK.

26 // 27

Sophisticated style with a Rock 'n' Roll twist. An eclectic mix of fresh sounds, signature cocktails and downtown atmosphere. A unique bournemouth experience.

Smokin Aces always has something going on. It can completely change in a couple of hours. Pop in at 5pm for. a cool, relaxing atmosphere (with 2-4-1 cocktails EVERYDAY until 8pm FYI) then the party really kicks off with live music, scratch hip hop artists, freestylers and percussion. Smokin has its layers, upstairs is where the party really hots up with an eclectic mish mash of anything from rock, funk and soul, then going downstairs where to a more laid back, soulful atmosphere (but I have seen both floors just a complete max out of head banger and crazy party people, many a time). Yes. This place is open every single day and has done for the last 2 years - even Christmas day. Being recognised as a key industry venue, (where you will find most bar tenders on a Sunday night) Smokin have what they call ‘An orphans Christmas’. This is where most bar tenders of Bournemouth who have family who live too far away, or even for those who are just fed up of their family come and celebrate Christmas with some fine drinking! Purveyors of good times, this Cocktail Bar and Whiskey lounge have all the components for a great night out.

UPRAW 6

A word from the guy behind it all: At Smokin’ Aces we pride ourselves on an excellent quality of service, combined with a unique social ambience that has been carefully constructed to make your overall experience as effortless and enjoyable as possible. It is my pleasure to share the concept that is Smokin’ Aces with you. I hope that you enjoy drinking in it as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to life. The creation of Smokin’ Aces has been (and will continue to be) a very organic process. It has been shaped by the feedback of others and listening to what it is that people really want. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved with Smokin’ Aces and I welcome any feedback to continue to develop in a positive direction. To all, cheers! -JJ Adams - Proprietor

Travel report:

Thailand

For the next few weeks we will be catching up with Megan as she reports on her travels through south east asia. Giving us the best and the worst and the do’s and do not’s of this must see part of of the world!

Photography and words: Megan Burrows So I have made it up to my first stop, Chiang Mai. The first stretch of the journey has been eventful. I started my trip from London, Heathrow and arrived in Bangkok the following day. The first thing that hit me was the HEAT. Even as I’m typing it’s only dropped to 30 degrees since this afternoon, which feels like heaven. My first impressions of Bangkok was that it is loud, hot, humid and hectic. Leaving the airport in the same clothes I had been travelling through London in, was a rookie mistake. I was staying in a slightly quieter district (Silom) which was a nice surprise. Whilst staying there, I ended up meeting some lovely people, one of which is still travelling with me in Chiang Mai. She’s the girl on the bike! At first I found it quite difficult to get to grips with the way things are over here, how to cope with the heat, how to bargain with taxi/tuk tuk drivers, where you can get the best food at the best prices etc. Now it’s all coming together! Once you start realising what’s what, I’ve found the further north I go, the friendlier and cheaper it is. Also the further from Bangkok and into the mountains the humidity drops… But not for long, I read the forecast for Laos which predicts 91% humidity. Apparently “I don’t know the meaning of sweaty”… Good to know. The first stop after Bangkok was Ayutthaya. This is the hometown of a friend I worked with last year called Por. The first day we just spent it cycling around (to the point I almost collapsed in the heat) and found smaller temples and found the best food I’ve eaten so far. A friend from Bangkok said “the dirtier the place looks, the better the papaya salad”… and so far he’s not been proved wrong. The next stop was Sukhothai. In terms of locations I’ve been to so far, Sukhothai was the most beautiful. Although I didn’t learn my lesson in Ayutthaya, and rented another bike to get around, it was still an amazing experience. The historical park in the old city was incredible, after a while of cycling around, looking at the temples, we took a break at Wat Si Sawai (one of the older temples) until the evening. I must have been the first time I have relaxed and enjoyed my surroundings without many distractions. Another plus was our hotel, Pai Sukothai Resort, had a pool, so after cycling around all day a midnight swim was SO welcome. MB UPRAW 6

Must see stuff.

Where to stay.

I would say, don’t put SO much pressure on seeing all the tourist attractions (I’m yet to see the grand palace). Just talk to as many people as you can and see what their plans are! It seems to be the best way. I would say in Bangkok, do get the skytrain, get a boat taxi and do whatever you feel like is up your street, Bangkok is a hard place to be if you’re uncomfortable so don’t force yourself to all the temples in 40 degree heat like all the other tourists if you just don’t fancy it. There’s plenty of that to come further in your journey.

Boutique hostels are very popular now, it attracts a certain kind of backpacker, so it’s not for everyone. For a stopover they’re usually a safe option! In terms of specific places, Deejai Backpackers in Chiang mai was a very friendly place and it’s where I’ve met some of the nicest people! It cost about £3.50 a night in a small shared dorm. Otherwise just weigh up your options! They range from place to place. Bangkok is pricier, period. You can find a room for around £4 a night, maybe cheaper! But it depends on your personal standards. The days of getting your meals for 50p seem to be over, unless plain rice was your thing. Travel completely depends on the journey and the whereabouts and the form, so there’s no way of explaining the basics there.

DO go to Sukothai! It’s just beautiful, the town itself hasn’t got much to offer but the historical sites are stunning. DO try food you don’t like the look of, our associations are so different, the likelihood of it tasting how it looks is pretty low. Do go to Doi Suthep and ask your driver to go to a few smaller temples. they’re much more beautiful.

UPRAW 6

My favourite Restaurant / club so far.

Where you should visit.

I may be biased on this one being a vegetarian, but there’s a great place in Chiang mai, called “from farm to table” selling organic vegetarian thai food! Don’t miss out on the coconut root salad with wild rice. Perfect. Otherwise go for the least appetizing looking street vendor possible! Always a winner no matter where you are.

Don’t miss out on Sukothai (especially Sukothai historical park)! There’s so much to see in between Bangkok and Chiang mai, don’t take the sleeper train north (as tempting as it sounds) you’re richer in time but not so much in your experience.

If you’re talking clubs, it’s the same deal. I’ve had more fun sitting outside a street vendor with some people you’ve just met and a bottle of rum... I’m not saying this is always a good idea... Be smart about it, go with your instincts... I mean if you’re alone, and it’s 2am and a man at a street vendor just offers you some rum, probably don’t do it. If you’re with a couple of people and you’re all game, why not?

What to watch out for. Beware - tuk tuk drivers work in partnership with local travel agents! They all charge insane amounts on commission and they will tell you that you can’t book tickets the station, this is rubbish. You’ll pay half the price by going straight there, just try and check a schedule before you go.

Upraw chats with Jason of candy black design studio about life after the arts university bournemouth

UPRAW 6

Photography: Toby Lewis Thomas

34 // 35

So Jason, you were at AUB and decided to stay in Bournemouth, what are you doing these days? I started my own design studio in 2010, Candy Black, a boutique design agency based in Poole offering a 360 approach to branding from logo design, print and marketing to digital and interiors. That’s pretty cool. What has been your best project/ client so far? There are a couple of projects that stand out, the first would be Fashion Scout (formerly Vauxhall Fashion Scout) based in London who are the leading showcase for new fashion design talent, having worked with and provided an unrivalled platform for designers among the likes of Peter Pilotto, Eudon Choi, Pam Hogg and Fyodor Golan, Fashion Scout’s international outreach not only supports the best in innovative British talent, but that from all over the world. Fashion Scout provides unrivaled platforms in London and Paris for carefully selected collective showcases from China, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia. Candy Black has been working with Fashion Scout for the past 6 seasons and we have successfully produced their website and online marketing, all the printed material and signage for event held at The Freemason’s Hall in Covent Garden and previously been involved in the full interior design of some of the key spaces at the shows including the VIP media lounge and the Exhibition room. This has led onto also designing and producing the new Graduate Fashion Week website launched last year www.gfw.org.uk The second project that stands out would be Coast, surf, ride, skate & coffee shop in Poole (next door to our studio) which is actually owned by my wife and her family. Candy Black were involved in the entire UPRAW 6

production of the project from the ground up, starting with branding and interior concepting to all the packaging, marketing and website production. We continue to produce all the required design work from website and blog updating to event ideas and promotion. It continues to be an exciting project to be involved in as there is always something to create and design for. What did you study at AUB? I first did a Foundation Course in Visual Communication and then a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design How has that created a platform to get you where you are now? It was a great platform in meeting friends, many of whom I am still close with and who are still in the Industry so it’s great for networking and collaborating on projects every now and again. What was the best thing about being at AUB? I would have to say again the friendships formed and the mayhem of uni life. Was Candy Black always the plan? I think in some way and form it was, but I had to take a couple of different paths to get to that point where all the pieces fell together at the right time. I got hired from my final exhibition by a local agency and having worked and lived in London before studying I knew I wasn’t in a rush to go back there so staying in Bournemouth was a great opportunity for me. I ended up staying at the agency for 2 years but toward the end I was looking for different options and challenges as I was growing as a designer.

I thought about doing a Masters degree for a while but didn’t follow through with that idea so applied for a job in London for what seemed was my dream job, there was a Graphic Design position at Luxury Interior Design Agency and I got asked up for an interview, I ended up being asked in for a second interview the next day and got offered the job pending a meeting with the Directors. Unfortunately that is when the recession hit and everything got put on hold. In this time I had also become a member of the KDU (Keystone Design Union, www.thekdu.net) based in New York which is a global creative community and an honour to be a part of so this kind of gave me the push to really start thinking about the kind of design I wanted to do. I ended up sending my portfolio to all the agencies around the world that I would love to work for, offering my services as a freelancer. I got a handful of positive replies for design projects to work on which was great. At this point I had already met my partner (now married) who was doing Interior Design in the area so we decided to start up a new studio together offering Graphic and Interior design, space in the Old Bakery had also become available and it all fell into place so we decide to take the plunge and Candy Black was born. Candy Black studios is a pretty cool working space, what’s the inspiration behind the sleek black and white look? We wanted to create a space that echoed the culture and kind of work we wanted to do and also attract. We wanted the studio to look like it could be anywhere in the world and draw attention to its appearance because we didn’t have a big portfolio of work at the time, we used the studio as a kind of flagship design project to showcase Candy Black work. The Old Bakery already had the white tile walls and I am a sucker for Black so it seemed like more of a natural progression that the studio theme ended up being black and white. We tried to make it a bit quirkier with some vintage furniture so it wasn’t too clinical. Is there a story behind the name Candy Black? Not really - we wanted the name to be something intriguing and unconventional and after days of going through options, this one kind of stuck. What advice can you give those going down the same path as you at AUB? I would say the most important thing to know is what kind of a designer you want to be and what kind of design you want to do. Once you fully understand that, the rest will fall into place. Upraw.

February 2013 marked the official launch of the latest incarnation of Renault’s quintessential supermini. As the fourth in its line the New Clio marks a turning point in small-car design, combining sleek coupé styling with 5-door hatchback functionality. Inspired by Renault’s stunning DeZir concept car, the New Clio channels the fluid form of this low-riding coupé, with its cleverly hidden rear doors, maintaining the DeZir’s glossy curves without any of the ugly panel gaps associated with typical 5-door designs. The Clio also retains the distinctive black front grill, which struck such an impression at the DeZir’s unveiling at the Paris Motor Show. The ride height is much lower than previous models, making the New Clio look more dynamic and aggressive on the road than other superminis. Combined with the carefully sculpted curves of the bodywork, the New Clio makes an arresting impression, all subtly offset with chrome detailing.

In addition to the features you can see, the New Clio range boasts impressive technology under the bonnet. The newly designed energy-efficient engines can offer a considerable 88.3mpg, without sacrificing any of the low-end acceleration that’s characteristic of the modern supermini. Combined with the Clio’s increased wheelbase, this makes for a truly exciting drive. The New Clio range is now available at Westover Renault. For more information or to book a test drive, contact Westover Poole on 01202 970324 Westover Salisbury on 01722 440527 or visit www.westovergroup.co.uk.

The styling continues throughout the interior, with a variety of style packages available, including the sumptuous glossy black trims available with the Dynamique S pack. If you opt for a MediaNav model, this trim continues across the dashboard to wrap around the combined navigation and multimedia system integrated in the centre console. Even the entry-level model comes equipped with a Bluetooth and USB connected 4x20W radio, integrating handsfree call technology right into the centre console. 38 // 39

Memento Mori Museum of the Macabre Hidden away behind Seamoor Road in Westbourne is a truly unique little shop, that needs to be seen to be believed. Stepping inside seemingly transports you to a different world, one where all manner of treasures are resurrected and repurposed. Skeletons of small animals are turned into flowers and displayed in glass cabinets or in the hand, and only the hand, of a human skeleton. On the walls are paintings of animals and disfigured people, some created using the artists own blood. And if all that’s a bit too much for you then you can sit down and rest in the electric chair, but don’t worry it’s no longer in commission. This place is Memento Mori, a museum of the macabre and collection of curiosities gathered, organised and in some cases created by owner Matt Ball. The jewel in the crown definitely has to be Lizzie. The full human skeleton of a victorian woman, laying peacefully holding a bunch of flowers in the shop’s counter. As you can see, she likes to get out and stretch her legs from time to time too, so don’t be surprised to see her stood in the middle of the shop. After opening in February, the collection on show and for sale at Memento Mori has grown and grown, with plans to turn the upstairs into a place with even more to see, it’s definitely well worth a look in what is easily one of the most interesting shops in Bournemouth. Upraw visits Geneve Eatery and DISCOVER GREATNESS IN avocado.

Photography: Toby Lewis Thomas // Words: Nick Baines

44 // 45

It’s the kind of food I like to eat

The avocado is one of the most underused ingredients going, it’s brushed over and forgotten about far too often and here in the UK, we rarely include it, let alone exploit it. The extent to the British use of the fruit begins with the de-stoned avocado holding a cargo of prawns in marie-rose sauce and ends with varying degrees of questionable guacamole. Smushed onto some wholegrain toast, partnered with a fried egg, or saddled with hot-sauce, the limits to what the avocado works with are endless. One place where the avocado has never felt more at home, is sandwiched between a fried beef patty and the toasted top half of a burger bun. Ramming half an avocado into your beef burger has untold rewards. For some, it’s the reassurance of something healthy, for those hedonists amongst us, it’s for the sheer deliciousness of the combination. This burger set-up doesn’t raise its head too often, but recently it has surfaced at a restaurant in Westbourne, Genève. There’s a small open kitchen at Genève, which is nestled alongside the bar and visible from the window. It is helmed by Mike Humphreys who recently spent time cooking in Malta at Chapter One, following a stint at Bristol’s Michelin starred Casamia. “It’s the kind of food I like to eat,” says Humphreys on a busy Tuesday evening. The aforementioned burger not only incorporates

UPRAW 6

avocado, but Emmental cheese, watercress and bacon. “The saltiness of the bacon cuts through the avocado and the richness of the beef,” continues Humprheys. “There’s lot’s going on, but it works just right.” At this stage, it’s worth pointing out that the bacon Mike uses in the burger is candied, or glazed, with maple syrup, adding yet more intense layers of flavour to the burger. Straying away from the avocado, reluctantly, Genève’s menu is stacked with laid-back foods like chili con carne, Reuben sandwiches and falafel wraps, but special attention needs to be paid to the chili cheese fries. A molten mix of cheddar and mozzarella top a robust dark beer and beef chuck chili, whilst skin-on fries fight for freedom underneath. American fast foods have been in vogue for a while now, with the trend thundering through cities across the globe. Until recently, these fashionable foods, having been pepped-up and refined, have made barely a whisper in these parts. Now though, after the onslaught of a bacon and avocado burger, chili cheese fries and a few token falafels, it appears the volume has been cranked right up. NB.

Upraw visit’s MONTYS LOUNGE X BRIGHT BEAN COFFEE

UPRAW 6

Photography: Toby Lewis Thomas // Words: Nick Baines

48 // 49

“People are important,” says James Druce, owner and General Manager of Pokesdown’s eclectic new bar and restaurant, Monty’s Lounge. It’s a bitter mid-March evening and the hum of rush hour traffic has started to wind down. It’s right by Pokesdown train station that James and business partner Christian Schneider opened Monty’s Lounge in January of this year. James staged - the chef equivalent of work experience at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir Aux Quait Seasons, “I learnt a lot in those three months,” tells Druce. “About flavor, seasonality and provenance.” Perhaps this is where the approach to food at Monty’s Lounge comes from. There’s a strong emphasis on local produce, which today is happily becoming omnipresent amongst independent restaurants. However, it’s not this ethos behind Monty’s that intrigues, though it remains admirable. James has instilled a significant value in the people that are a strong part of Monty’s Lounge; from suppliers, employees and the people who eat and drink there. “We’re looking into introducing apprenticeship schemes later this year,” continues Druce in a few quiet moments during service. Burgers bolster the menu with The Full Monty being the restaurants most popular item. It involves a tower of a ground beef patty, sourced from nearby Pondhead Farm in Lyndhurst, fried onion rings, pancetta, tomatoes and Dorset Cheddar. A monumental burger, which sits handsomely next to homemade pork crackling and a

spiced applesauce. Figs stuffed with a north Dorset goats cheese, make an appearance too, wrapped in pancetta alongside a peppery wild garlic sauce. Encouragingly, there’s even a South African wine on offer where the producer donates a percentage of the profits to a local orphanage. One of James Druce’s suppliers is Alex Morris of Bournemouth based Bright Bean Coffee Co. Alex set up his business in October 2012 supplying coffee, machine rental, servicing and barista training. “At the moment I’m just selling to the trade, to places like Monty’s,” says Morris. “But later this year I’m looking into retailing coffees for home brewing.” Despite being just 24, Alex has a solid background working in the tea and coffee industry from blending teas and roasting coffees for companies like Dorset Teas and Café Rico down in Weymouth. “Coffee is just so diverse,” explains Morris. “There’s an incredible variety to coffee, there’s the regions, roasts, blends, and that’s before you even get to making a cup.” Alex has just started to carry some single origin coffees, “It gives me full traceability back to the farms where the coffee is grown,” he says before he leaves on another delivery; most of his customers are within a 20 mile radius, which keeps things more personal he tells me, better customer service. It appears that the values James Druce holds in people, and the relationships involved with food, are shared by others too. NB.

Tall Ships began life in Falmouth, Cornwall about 4 years ago. Not known for it’s burgeoning music scene, Falmouth provided a safe haven for the early beginnings of a band that’s musical ambitions would be allowed to flourish and grow until they were ready for life beyond the Devon border. Since then, their progress has been marked by 2 EP’s, numerous singles and last October saw the release of their debut album, ‘Everything Touching’, each release signifying a progression in sound and song writing, calling on the likes of Biffy Clyro, Battles and Sigur Ros for inspiration. The album was met with high critical acclaim and has seen them grow in stature as they begin to fight off much more established names for plays on both Radio 1 and BBC 6music with singles ‘Gallop’ and current radio hit, ‘T=0’. Having already performed at festivals such as Latitude, Bestival and Truck, Tall Ships were asked by BBC Introducing to headline their stage at Reading/Leeds Festivals last summer, seemingly a teenage boy’s dream come true, the band managed to fight off the swelling

noise of the Foo Fighters on the main stage to perform what they themselves have proclaimed as their best show yet. In a fury of huge riffs and soaring melodies, it was one of the best live shows that I’ve seen in a long while. However, that may be about to change, as the band head off on tour around the UK in early March, reaching it’s climax with their biggest headline show to date at London’s Scala, a step up in the big leagues if there ever was one. The band are no strangers to life on the road, having already toured with the likes of We Are Scientists, Los Campesinos, Nada Surf, 65daysofstatic and Dry The River, and their journey doesn’t end in London, as they jet off to Austin, Texas to perform at the SXSW music festival before returning closer to home to embark on their first headline tour around Europe. The rise of Tall Ships is all but a formality, you’d best get out and see them play before they start knocking bands such as Foo Fighters from top spot. SB.

LLOYD miles So you now produce the heaviest house night known to Bournemouth town. How’s it all going and what can we expect in the pipeline for summer 2013? It’s all going really well thanks. We just put on a new project at Aruba which went down really really well, I think there were a few sceptics out there that thought it couldn’t be done but we nailed it and are putting together some more dates at the venue. Back at our normal home the Firestation we have 2 huge dates ahead, first up we bring probably the biggest house DJ to play the town in recent history when we welcome Maya Jane Coles on May 18th, this event marks the start of a collaboration with Junk Club in Southampton who we will be throwing a few events with across the year Then May 26th we put on our biggest line-up to date and probably my favourite too with Shonky (Appolonia) & Danny Daze (Hot Creations), two immensely talented international DJ’s with the former widely respected as one of the world’s best DJ’s Summer also sees us host a week long holiday in Ibiza which we have package deals available through our website. In between all that we will be throwing a few more parties at Aruba for sure. For sure, we were at KANUKU at Aruba last week and it blew up - we are looking forward to the next one! So how’d you get yourself started with Get Satisfied in the first place? Myself and Gareth have known each other for couple of years and he asked me to DJ at one of his nights at the back end of 2011. Afterwards we spoke about doing a night together and we both thought why not, Get Satisfied was born the following March. We have a great working relationship, I don’t think we have had a disagreement yet, which shows we are both reading off the same page.

If you had a rider every time you played, what’d be your ultimate demands? I’m pretty easy going, but a few bottles of old recipe Sailor Jerry’s would be great, along with some top quality Thai food and all my friends to party with, as it’s the ultimate rider, I’d add Kate Beckinsale to come sit on lap just before I went on, that wouldn’t go a miss either. What are you looking to achieve next after domination of Bournemouth’s House scene? Personally, to get my records signed to the labels I’ve targeted to release on, my music is almost there, it could get released now but on labels I don’t necessarily respect or want to be on, I would rather be patient and wait till I’m making stuff that’s good enough for who I’ve shortlisted, I’ve always said there’s no point releasing for the sake of it, I get to meet a lot of people through Get Satisfied and Strict Tempo Dance Party (another night I run) so I have the contacts, just need to be patient and I’ll get there in the end. I’m treating production as a full time job along with Get Satisfied so hopefully it won’t be long till you can all hear the music I’m making! When’s the next event we need to be at? I have another Strict Tempo Dance Party coming up on April 20th at the Winchester then May 5th. We are hosting a deck on the High Tide Boat Party in Southampton with Scuba and then it’s all about May 18th and 26th that I’ve already mentioned.

Who would you chart as your main influences?

What are your TOP TEN tracks right now?

So many but if I had to nail it down, people like Kings of Tomorrow, Masters at Work, Dirty Vegas really got me into house music, those were the people my dad would play me, I delved deeper after discovering them and came across the likes of Larry Heard, Tony Humphries, Kerri Chandler all who really shaped the music I listen too, DJ and Produce today.

SOS recruitment has teamed up with Upraw magazine to highlight the very best recruitment advice for professionals and young people across Dorset. Whether you’re looking for a new job or new staff, talk to the SOS team today about your next steps.

UPRAW 6

You’ve done it! You’ve created the ultimate CV, got yourself an interview and are well on the way to potentially making the job yours. Yet with so much competition in the market place and recent figures announcing a massive 2.4 million people still unemployed, the fight is on to make the role yours, and yours only. You passed the first interview with flying colors and you just got a call to schedule a second interview. What happens next? How can you use this second interview as a means to get the job offer? It’s important to be aware that the company is at this point seriously interested in you, or they wouldn’t have offered a second interview. You are definitely in the running for the job! Now you just have to secure an offer and here are SOS recruitment’s very best tips. •

Review, Analyse and Prepare

Or more to the point analyse what you didn’t say. If there was something you thought you should have mentioned or put across about yourself this is the time, and your final chance. A second interview will provide you with the opportunity to expand on responses from your first interview so take some quite time to go through the first stage in your head, see what you might have missed and now clarify and add. •

Ask Questions

As you’re being interviewed for a final time the chances are that you are in strong contention for the position. See this as a final chance to ask about company structure, how they see you fitting in, who you report too, and so on, as these are the intelligent questions people forget during round one. Plus having another set of questions ready to ask the employer shows you’re proactive and have gone away to think about the role and company. •

Research, Research, Research

This is the time to go through the finer details that will showcase your deeper knowledge of the company and prove you’ve gone the extra mile. You’ll have completed a lot of research prior to the first interview so stand out loud and proud by learning a few extra things to have ready up your sleeve. Visit Message Boards to research what’s being discussed. If you have a connection, use it to get some insider information on management and staff,

Julie Hughes Managing Director of SOS Recruitment

as well as the company and become au-fau with their Facebook page, Twitter and blogs so you can almost recite who they support and feel like you get to know them on a personal level. Their tone of voice, social media style, people or other businesses they support and follow; these are all things to know and you’ll actually feel like you can resonate with the brand a bit more too. •

If You Get a Job Offer on the spot?

In some cases, you may be offered a job on the spot so be prepared for this happening. Don’t feel pressurized to say yes, or no, immediately. It does cement your enthusiasm and commitment to the employer to accept right away but only do so if you 110% want the job. Everything might seem perfect whilst you’re in the interview room but taking 24 hours and some fresh air afterwards will give you chance to think it over once and for all. This is the place you’re going to spend 80% of your time after all. •

So Close, But So Far...

You’ve come this far so it’s no time to rest on your laurels and think the job is yours or even worse, give in. In today’s economic climate every little action and touch point counts to the employer and makes YOU stand out from the masses. That’s why SOS recruitment recommends sending a thank you note or email after your second interview to the people that interviewed you. Here you can outline what a great experience you had, how interesting it was to meet the team/office/managers/ directors and leave with a lasting impression suggesting you already have some ideas and input should good news come your way. In a busy, digital world it’s often the direct, thought-provoking actions that get you the brownie points. Securing that all-important job and making it yours can be tough but with the right preparation and balance we have every confidence you’ll seal your dream job. The only question you need to ask now is where do I sign?

UPRAW HAS A FINAL CHAT WITH JAK ABOUT PAINTING, TATTOOS AND SULLEN CLOTHING LABEL. Another member of the Ink Studios family is Jak Connolly. A stellar talent when considering is short time spent tattooing, Jak has found himself on the receiving end of plethora of awards and press coverage. But one of the biggest accolades afforded to him relates to a painting rather than a tattoo. Self taught Connolly was approached by world renowned tattoo clothing label Sullen. They’ve launched a tshirt with the above painting by Jak, we caught up with him to talk shop. UPRAW: So tell us Jak, how long have you been interested in tattoos and art in particular? JC: for as long as I can remember I’ve been drawn to tattoos. I remember going into a parlour when I was 10/11 and watching a huge hairy dude tattooing in the back. I flicked through his flash and found a gun with a scroll saying ‘to die for’. Lets just say I’m glad you have to be 18 to get tattooed. As for art, I’ve loved it since I was a kid. I’ve picked it up from my dad who used to draw little cartoon characters for me!

So fast forward a few years and you’re now an accomplished tattoo artist. Are you surprised to be where you are today? Not one bit, I never really knuckled down in school, but whenever there’s something I’m interested in I find all sorts of things that inspire me and teach me new techniques. As far as art goes I’m completely self taught, and I’ll continue to learn forever. What’s your speciality? Hyper realism with a bit of a dark twist. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of drawing weird and wonderful faces! Is there anyone in particular you’d say you has inspired you? Jeff Gogue is brilliant, his depth is impeccable. Michael Shapcott too! Far too many to list here! Finally, what’s it like being hand picked by Sullen to use your work on a piece of their clothing? It’s just bizarre! Definitely a massive massive compliment, hopefully it’ll put my name out there a bit!

Go pick yourself up one of Jaks tee’s for Sullen at: www.sullenclothing.com www.sullenclothing.com/store/tees/circus www.jakconnollyart.com www.facebook.com/JakConnolly

What’s been the best experience you’ve had in the field so far?

You live near Brighton, studied in Winchester, where’s next? I’m dyyying to get myself into London! I currently live in a tiny town outside of Brighton, full of nothing but charity shops and way too many hairdressers. I’m yet to find a career in the design industry, but my worrrrd am I determined to get up and go to the capital the second I grab myself one!

Well, during my 2nd year of untiI was asked by my boss to draw a huge detailed stags head in the window of her Art shop in Winchester highstreet. 2 years later and it’s still the most popular piece i’ve done so far! It gave me the massive confidence boost I needed at the time and even now I look at it and think... don’t panic, you can draw!

How did you get involved with UPRAW?

Who’s your inspiration?

What’s the best thing you’ve ever seen in 3D?

My inspiration for yeeears and years now has always been Jon Burgerman. He’s pushed his unique drawing style into every nook n’ cranny of every area of the design industry possible! His work is exciting, bold and just looks so god damn cool on ANY product he puts it on!!

The best thing i’ve seen in 3D so far is prrrrobably ‘Paranorman’. a very under-rated little animation out last year. But i’m forever hopeful that pixar will re-release WALL-E in 3D. THEN my life will be complete.

Well lucky for me, a mate from uni had shown the UPRAW crew my stuff a while back! Then, to my surprise, one snowy afternoon in March I got a phonecall from a mr Quinn asking to illustrate the 3D issue!! wahaaay.
