Uppingham School Prep School Orchestral Day Thursday 8 February 2024

WELCOME

Our Prep School Orchestral Day is a hugely significant and much-loved event in our annual calendar. It allows us to reaffirm and celebrate the musical relationships that we share together as educational partners, whilst also showing you a little of the love, nurture and care that we have for music here at Uppingham, and the significant place that it holds within the life of our school. We passionately believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to experience the joyful, transformative and dynamic power of music and provide a rich and varied offering to all of our musicians. Uppingham is a close and supportive community, with music making at its heart. We cater for all musical tastes, and many Uppinghamians go on to musical careers. With a long tradition of hymn singing, moulded in Chapel five days a week, our pupils leave Uppingham with a deep love of communal singing. Working across three bespoke music buildings and headed by an extraordinary team of 46 specialist professional musicians, we are proud of our wider links into the music industry. Our musical soloists and pupil-led ensembles feature in around 70 performance platforms across each year. We aim to provide the most

stimulating musical experiences that benefit and enrich the lives of all in the school community. It is the underlying principles of enjoyment, exploration, perseverance and problem-solving that give our musicians the skills and motivation to achieve, and that also underpins this fantastic day of music making. If you want to know more about what Uppingham can offer your musical children, please don’t hesitate to be in touch. Generous bursaries are accessible at the point of a successful music scholarship application, and we are always delighted to offer advice-auditions and keen to strike up nurturing relationships with gifted young musicians. Under the guidance of our musical team, I know that you are in for an extraordinary and fun-filled day. If you are sitting comfortably, then we will begin…

MUSIC AT UPPINGHAM SCHOOL

For pupils who strive to excel in music as part of a rounded education, Uppingham offers the best music provision of any nonspecialist music school in the country. Music is quite simply a way of life at Uppingham. For any pupil with a passion for music, in any form – whether jazz or classical, polyphony or hip-hop – we offer boundless inspiration, opportunity and encouragement. We celebrate and support individual excellence and mass participation – catering to the musical ambitions and abilities of all pupils. Throughout its history, Uppingham has been associated with musicmaking pioneers – and that spirt of adventure and vitality is sustained today by our internationally renowned Director of Music and our inspirational teaching team of professional musicians. Their work is enriched and extended by visiting world-class performers who support our wide-ranging programme of masterclasses and workshops. Recent masterclasses for our pupils have been led by world-renowned musicians Roderick Williams, Hannah Roberts, Tasmin Little, Dame Ann Murray and Malcolm Martineau. This year, we welcome Peter Donohoe, who performs as part of our 2024 Keyboard Festival, and jazz singer Louise Balkwill, who led a Jazz Jam and workshop with our singers and instrumentalists. Our successful professional concert series has most recently hosted visiting artists including The Sixteen, Tenebrae and Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

Our pupils have access to no fewer than three music schools, equipped with state-of-the art music technology and professional-quality performance spaces. Music-making runs through the whole community at Uppingham. Everyone who plays an instrument is encouraged to take a full part in group music-making, whether as part of major ensembles or orchestras, or in specialist groups such as the bagpipe band, percussion ensemble, guitar ensemble or wind quintet. Pupils have a vast range of performance opportunities at all levels, from concerto concerts, lunchtime concerts and recital competitions in school, to performances further afield at prestigious venues such as Trinity College, Cambridge, the Royal Albert Hall and The Cathedral of St John The Divine, New York.

In every musical endeavour, we challenge pupils to develop independence and self-discipline; to explore their own artistic identities. Our pupil-led orchestras, bands, ensembles and choirs stage regular professional-calibre performances, which never fail to leave audiences stunned by their quality and virtuosity. We nurture and develop talented individuals through our musical scholarship scheme, which attracts candidates from the UK’s foremost choir schools. Many pupils progress to Oxbridge scholarships or specialised study at conservatoires, and go on to various music careers.
