Our co-curricular programme is central to developing courageous, curious, compassionate, adaptable and passionate young people. People who are ready to navigate their own path through life and influence the world around them for the better.
UPPStart, which takes place after school, is Uppingham Cairo’s co-curricular programme in the Junior School.
It is structured to help our children to find their talents and passions; to make the most of the opportunities available to them at Uppingham Cairo – ensuring they enjoy stimulating and life-enhancing experiences throughout their time at school.

What can you do in UPPStart
?
Who can take part?
The UPPStart programme is open to all pupils in the Junior School. Some clubs and activities take place later in the day and are only available to Day Boarders. Day Boarder only activities are highlighted in bold.
What is involved?
Before your son or daughter decides on the activities that they will take part in, please take the time to look at the overview of each of them which will be available at the start of the Winter Term each year. Pupils who join the school mid-year will have the opportunity to join those activities which still have availability at the time of joining.
What is on ofer?
Through the wide variety of Clubs on ofer, our Junior School pupils will have the opportunity to learn new skills, broaden their academic and creative horizons and develop new interests and hobbies that can last a lifetime. The co-curricular programme is based around the pupils’ enthusiasms, so there is some variation from year to year. Underlined clubs are permanent standing clubs which run every academic year, and descriptions of these clubs can be found in this booklet.
On the next page are some examples of the kinds of co-curricular activities that will be on ofer, grouped by type. The final list for each academic year, including descriptions for each club and society on ofer, is shared shortly before the beginning of the Winter Term. Please note that clubs in bold are only available to Day Boarders. Clubs in italics are planned for future years and will not be available in 2024-5.
Please note that once your son or daughter has chosen their activities they must commit to the programme for the duration of the academic year.

Our Music and Drama clubs can include; LAMDA, Arts and Crafts, Dance (Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical Contemporary, Modern, Tap), Band, Drawing, Colouring Club, Clay Modelling, Bead Making, Junior School Choir, Flute Ensembles, Guitar, Percussion Club, Piano Workshop, Sewing Club, Recorder Ensemble, Ukelele Club, String Ensemble, Orchestra, and Vocal Ensembles.

British Scouts
Overview
British Scouting Overseas (BSO) is available to all pupils and is a part of the UK Scout Association with headquarters in Gilwell Park, London. As an ofcial BSO group, we have access to the same resources, support and programme as UK based scout groups.
Joining the British Scouts ofers a wealth of benefits. Firstly, it provides opportunities for personal development, fostering skills such as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving through engaging activities and challenges. Scouts also gain practical skills, from outdoor survival techniques to first aid, preparing them for a range of situations in life. Additionally, participation in Scouts promotes physical fitness and an appreciation for nature through camping, hiking, and outdoor adventures.
Squirrels (4s and 5s)
Squirrels can achieve anything they set their minds to – and they have lots of fun along the way. The weekly one-hour sessions are a wonderful opportunity for the 4s and 5s to take their first step into being part of Scouts. Sessions will be packed with outdoor activities, fun, games, badges, laughter and so much more to help our youngest members learn the skills they need for life.
Beavers (6s and 7s)
Every week, the Beavers will gather in groups called Beaver Colonies to hop, skip and jump their way through lots of diferent games and activities – achieving anything they set their minds to, and having lots of fun along the way. Being a Beaver is all about growing and learning in small but mighty ways. Here are some of the things you’ll get up to with your new friends - exploring the great outdoors, trying new activities and learning new things and helping others within the school community.
The Cubs (8s, 9s & Top Year)
Every week, the cubs gather in groups called Cub Packs to take part in lots of interesting and challenging activities – achieving anything they set their minds to, and having lots of fun along the way. Being a Cub is all about growing and learning in small but mighty ways. Here are some of the things you’ll get up to with your new friends - going on adventures, learning new skills and helping others!

LAMDA
Overview
Uppingham Cairo is a registered centre for LAMDA Examinations (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) and LAMDA training sessions have been built into the enrichment programme to provide a specialised supplement to curricular music and drama lessons. LAMDA lessons are available to all pupils from Nursery.
The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) is one of the oldest drama schools in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1861, it quickly established itself as a centre of excellence in performance training. LAMDA has provided theatre and the world of film and television with generation upon generation of first-class actors and expertly-trained stage managers across the world. LAMDA began ofering speech examinations to the public in the 1880s. Since then, these examinations have been refined and developed into a comprehensive system of performance evaluation by experts in education, acting and communication. In addition to being the UK’s largest statutory speech and drama awarding body, LAMDA Examinations have a reputation for excellence across the globe.
LAMDA Lessons will prepare you for world recognised LAMDA examinations in both Acting and Speaking Verse and Prose. LAMDA tuition improves confidence, communication skills and at a higher level provides UCAS points for entry to university.
Ballet
Overview
Please note that Ballet is only available to all pupils in the Nursery and Day Boarders from the 4s. Ballet ofers a comprehensive array of benefits, encompassing physical, mental, and social aspects. Through its rigorous practice, ballet cultivates physical fitness by enhancing strength, flexibility, and stamina while promoting proper posture and alignment. The precise coordination and balance required in ballet contribute to improved motor skills and body awareness. Additionally, the mental focus demanded by ballet fosters concentration and cognitive abilities. Beyond its physical and mental advantages, ballet serves as a creative outlet for emotional expression, enabling dancers to convey stories and emotions through movement. Furthermore, participation in ballet classes fosters camaraderie and teamwork, promoting social interaction and a sense of community within the dance realm.
Junior School Choir
Overview
Junior School Choir is available to all pupils of the prep school from the 7s -Top Year . Joining the Junior School Choir ofers a multitude of benefits that extend beyond the realm of music. Firstly, it provides a sense of belonging and camaraderie, fostering strong social connections and friendships within the choir community. Singing in a choir also promotes teamwork and cooperation, as members work together towards a common goal of creating beautiful harmonies. Choir singing has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, promoting overall mental well-being. Physically, it improves posture, breathing, and vocal control, leading to better overall health. Participating in choir performances will allow members to express themselves creatively and experience the joy of sharing music with others.
STANDING ACADEMIC CLUBS AND SOCIETIES
Latin club
Overview
Latin club is available for pupils from the 7s to Top year and will introduce the children into the wonderful of ancient Rome and the Latin language, through (minimus) – a unique Latin course for younger children. It is based on a real family who live at vindolanda in 100 AD: Flavious =, the fort commander, his wife Lepidila, their three children, assorted house slaves, their cat vivrissa- minimus the mouse.
Animal Care society
Overview
The animal care society teaches children how to look after animals from a number of aspects from feeding them, grooming them and which habitats suit certain animals the best. Children will learn to create feeding schedules for the animals. Alongside children will learn grooming techniques for each of our diferent animals and which kind of habitats our animals thrive in best.
Greenpower Engineering Society
Overview
The Greenpower Engineering Society is available to pupils from the 9s-top year , providing aspiring engineers with a dynamic platform to explore sustainable technologies and unleash their creative potential.
Through hands-on projects, workshops, and competitions, our members delve into the world of electric vehicle design and green energy solutions through The Formula 24 Challenge. By building and racing a Greenpower Formula 24 Kit Car, our members will develop skills in collaboration, critical thinking, and practical engineering, empowering them to become leaders in the burgeoning field of eco-engineering. Join us to make a tangible diference in the world, as we drive towards a greener, cleaner future.

PRACTICAL MATTERS
How do I sign up to an UPPStart Programme?
Signing up
You will be informed in the first week of the Winter Term when the window for signing up is open, please do not try and do this before then as you will not have access. Please follow the following steps to sign up to your UPPStart options.
Please note that some activities are only available to Day Boarders and will not be available to Day Pupils. If you are a Scholar, you will have already been signed up to your scholar’s group and will not be able to select another option at that time.
STEP 1:
Sign into your SOCS account by clicking on the link that will be sent to you before the beginning of term.
STEP 2:
Go to the activities page and click on ADD next to the activity you wish to choose for the year.
STEP 3:
The activity will then appear in your calendar. This is NOT confirmation of your final allocation and you will be notified when your selection has been confirmed.
What do I do if I don’t have a password?
If you have forgotten your password or if you have not yet set a password, please click “Forgot Password” and follow the instructions. You will be taken to the school’s login page where you can log in. Once you have entered your login credentials, you will be logged into SOCS.
When you are logged in, you are able to change your password by clicking on Settings.
Update your password on the My Details & Settings page.
UPP&Out Contacts
You will have until the first half term to change onto another programme. However, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to move into your first preference as some programmes may be full and there are limitations on the number of pupils that some programmes can take. Changing your choice
