Your Art Is Brilliant: But Your Team Is Why You’ll Make It
Christine Collins
Let’s start with a hard truth, served with love: your art alone isn’t enough. Now before you clutch your lyric notebook and start quoting Prince at me, hear me out. Your art is essential. It’s the heartbeat. The magic. The thing that sets you apart from every other person with ProTools and a Pinterest mood board. But the industry? The path to real, sustainable, enduring success? That’s built on infrastructure. Support. Planning. Execution. In other words: your team.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. And let’s be honest—it wasn’t bilked in a day either. No great city, tour, album, or legacy is born without strategy. If you want to last, not just launch, you need people. Not just fans. Not just likes. People who help you win.
I’ve been in this business long enough to have seen it all: the lone wolf artist who burns out mid-tour trying to do everything themselves, the hyper-talented songwriter who never finds their audience because no one was guiding the release, the gifted vocalist who signed to a manager that cared more about clout than careerbuilding. And I’ve also seen what happens when the right people come together behind an artist with vision. It’s not just growth. It’s ignition.
So who’s your team? And why do they matter? Let’s break it down—story-style.
There’s the manager, your general, your translator, your deadline whisperer. The one who reminds you that “creative freedom” is beautiful, but calendars are real, and opportunities expire. A good manager doesn’t just get you gigs.
They get you your strategy. They know how to turn buzz into bookings, and chaos into career moves. They’re the person you call when you need clarity, support, or someone to politely tell the promoter no, you won’t be performing for “pizza and vibes.”
There’s your publicist, who understands that being talented isn’t enough—people need to hear about you. They’re the ones crafting your story, pitching your soul to media outlets with the precision of a sniper and the finesse of a poet. They’re planting seeds in rooms you haven’t entered yet. And trust me, that matters.
There’s your agent, the one curating opportunities like a setlist—strategically, intentionally, with your career arc in mind. They’re not just booking “any show”; they’re booking the shows. The ones that align with your sound, your goals, your audience— not a random dive bar five states away where no one knows your name and the monitors don’t work. These are the shows that build momentum, not just mileage. That grows your fanbase, not your burnout. That connects you with your future collaborators, your next audience, your bigger stage. Because every ‘yes’ should move you forward— not just keep you busy.
There’s your lawyer, the person who ensures that “once-in-a-lifetime deal” doesn’t become a cautionary tale— the one who reads the fine print so you don’t accidentally sign your rights away for a hoodie and a shoutout. Because contracts aren’t just one-sizefits-all; they come packed with clauses you didn’t know existed and legal obligations you didn’t mean to accept. From NDAs to royalty splits to 360
deals that own your face and your future, understanding what you’re signing isn’t optional—it’s survival.
There’s your makeup artist, your stylist, your photographer, your creative director—all people who understand that in today’s landscape, your image is a language. You don’t have to be polished, but you do have to be intentional. And these people help you show the world who you are before you ever open your mouth.
There’s your producer, your engineer, the technician behind the board who can hear the sound in your head and pull it into reality. The one who makes your voice hit like thunder instead of a garage demo from 2010. That’s not luck. That’s craft. And it takes a village to translate inspiration into impact. The right team doesn’t just nod along to your 3 a.m. voice memo—they build with you. They take that half-hummed hook or scribbled lyric and help shape it into something that could top charts, touch hearts, or at the very least, slap. They’re not afraid to be your harshest critic when it counts. They’ll send you back for another take, push you past comfortable, suggest what you didn’t know you needed. And most importantly, they hear you—not just the track, but the vision, the nuance, the soul of it all—and help you bring it to life, better than you imagined.
And let’s not forget your friends. Your real ones. The ones who hand you tea when you lose your voice, who call out your nonsense, who remind you to eat, to breathe, to stay humble, to stay you. The ones who love you enough to tell you when you’re being delusional, difficult, or dangerously close to signing off on a bad idea in the name of “vision.” Because when your head’s in the clouds chasing the dream, you need people with their feet on the ground—people who aren’t afraid to deliver the cold, hard truth wrapped in love and maybe a little sarcasm. These are the folks who keep your ego in check, your feet on the stage, and your soul intact.
Together, these people are your shield, your amplifier, your scaffolding. They help you move through the industry with a little less fear and a lot
Christine Collins
more firepower. Because no matter how good you are, this business will test your limits. It’ll push you toward burnout, bad deals, and moments where quitting feels easier than showing up.
And in those moments, your team isn’t a luxury. It’s the reason you stay in the game.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “That all sounds expensive.” It can be. But here’s the real truth: building a team isn’t about hiring full-time staff on day one. It’s about investing in relationships that grow with your career. It’s about learning who shows up when you need them, who adds value, who aligns with your vision. And it’s about knowing your worth enough to ask for help when you need it.
Because this isn’t a solo act. This is an ensemble performance. Your art is the core, but your team? They’re the bridge between your genius and the world hearing it.
You can do it alone for a little while. Sure. But at some point, the weight will grow heavier than your bandwidth. And you’ll realize that greatness isn’t about control—it’s about collaboration.
The artists who win are the ones who stop trying to do it all alone and start letting the right people in.
So build your village. Feed it. Listen to it. Grow with it. And don’t forget to thank them in your Grammy speech.
Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Legends Steve Miller Band To Perform At Suburban Park At The Great New York State Fair
After packing in nearly 37,000 screaming fans in 2015, The Great New York State Fair is thrilled to announce the return of music icons Steve Miller Band, which will perform live at Suburban Park on Thursday, August 21 at 8 p.m.
“Circle your calendars – this is one you won’t want to miss,” said Fair Director Julie LaFave. “The Steve Miller Band is one of the most iconic bands in music history with too many megahits to count. Every year, we survey fairgoers to help inform our entertainment decisions and results always point to the popularity of our rock shows. Fairgoers asked and we’ve listened! Steve Miller drew one of the largest crowds in our Fair’s history and I can’t wait to see how many people pack into Suburban Park on August 21 for what I’m sure will be a show for the ages.”
Steve Miller has been a monumental presence on the American music scene for more than half a century. His releases have sold tens of millions of records and have been streamed billions of times. Miller’s Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than fifteen million copies, making it among the 25 best-selling albums of all time.
Beginning in the 1970s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was smart, polished, exciting and irresistible - and that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: “The
Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love,” “Swingtown,” and “Abracadabra,” among them. To this day, those songs are instantly recognizable the moment you hear them - and impossible not to sing along with. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.
As an influential presence in music, Steve Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and was later enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022.
Today, the Steve Miller Band continues to entertain fans across the world. In 2024, the group played to nearly one million fans and toured alongside Def Leppard and Journey. Their platinum-selling single “Abracadabra” returned to the top of the charts thanks to its prominent feature in Eminem’s smash single “Houdini.”.
The Fair starts Wednesday, August 20, and runs through Labor Day, Monday, September 1. All concerts are included in the price of admission, which will go on sale later this summer. The Great New York State Fair is the most affordable state fair in the country. Tickets are $8 for adults while admission is free for children under 12 and senior citizens aged 65 and older.
In total, The Fair’s 2025 Chevrolet Music Series will feature 41 national recording acts. There will be a daily 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. concert at Chevy Court (located near Gate 1), and an 8 p.m. concert each evening at Suburban Park (located on the western end of the Fairgrounds, beyond the Midway). The Fair will also host two special shows at 9 p.m. on Friday, August 22 and 29 at Chevy Court.

This free community event is held right on the square in historic downtown Watertown, NY, and we are excited to be celebrating its 8th year.
The Block Parties take place on the last Fridays of June, July, and August, from 5-10 pm each evening. We draw a great crowd with our variety of attractions, including local craft vendors offering unique goods, a selection of popular food trucks, a dedicated Kid Zone with activities for children, and an Artist Spotlight area showcasing local talent. We also feature multiple musical acts from across New York each night, providing entertainment for all ages.
Introducing the Jesse Collins Quartet presented by NBC Watertown “Jesse Collins represents a unique voice in modern jazz saxophone, combining the harmonic sophistication of post-bop with a deep understanding of American musical traditions.
His distinctive approach was forged through intensive study with an extraordinary lineup of jazz masters - Sam Rivers, Lee Konitz, Arnie Lawrence and Jaki Byard.
A product of the New School’s legendary Jazz Studies Program, Collins developed alongside contemporary jazz innovators like Brad Mehldau, Roy Hargrove and Chris Potter.
His quartet work demonstrates a remarkable synthesis of bebop complexity and accessible musical forms, informed by his early immersion in bluegrass and old-time music through his Hampton family lineage.
Collins’latest quartet recording, to be release in May 2025, features the rhythmic mastery of Ari Hoenig, the harmonic sophistication of Ed Cherry, and the foundational strength of Neal Miner, showcasing his evolution as a composer and bandleader.
His arrangements and original compositions reflect a deep understanding of jazz tradition while pushing boundaries through innovative crossgenre integration.”

Introducing Backyard Wrestling presented by First Class Home Inspection
Loud, Raw, and Unapologetically Real.
“Straight from the gritty heart of Upstate NY, the SAMMY Awared winning band, backyard wrestling, is the sonic smackdown you didn’t know you needed. Fueled by DIY spirit and an unfiltered love for distorted guitars, heavy hooks, and basement-show chaos, this band brings a cathartic kind of energy that hits like a steel chair to the soul—in the best way possible.
Known for their chaotic charm and unrelenting live performances, backyard wrestling shreds the line between punk, alt-rock, and noise-pop, carving out a sound that’s as rebellious as it is relatable. Their sets are a sweaty celebration of community, catharsis, and pure musical mayhem.
This year, they’re stepping out of the garage and into the spotlight at the Downtown Block Party Series, ready to throw down the gauntlet and tear it up with raw emotion and high-octane sound. If you’re looking for the set that might just steal the show—this is it!”

ATLAS:
Puddle of Mudd - Kiss the Machine
---Bill Baker
Ever wonder what process is involved when a band chooses a particular name? When Puddle of Mudd hit the national music scene with their debut Come Clean in 2001, I wondered why they would choose such a non-descriptive title for their place in rock n roll. Well, I guess enquiring minds needed to know. Researching for this review, I discovered that the Kansas City based band rehearsal space was next to a mud caked Missouri river levee. The band would have to walk through a puddle of mud to enter the building. Good thing they practiced on the second floor.
To tell you the truth I was about to give up on Puddle of Mudd, their last couple of albums didn’t impress me. Fortunately, their new release, Kiss the Machine on Pavement Entertain-
ment, has reestablished the band with the strongest effort in some time. I believe this album is comparable to their debut so many years ago.
The band hit the big time after several independent releases with their major label debut, the multiplatinum Come Clean. The album featured their signature songs “Blurry” and “She Hates Me” providing the path to selling over five million copies worldwide. Life On Display followed in 2003 with Famous in 2007, Volume 4, Songs in the Key of Love and Hate in 2009, Rediscovered 2011,
Welcome To Galvania in 2019 and 2023’s Ubiquitous. Altogether they have sold over seven million records to date. I am quite sure their latest effort will increase their total sales volume substantially.
Lead vocalist Wes Scantlin, who also

provides rhythm guitar duties, has been the driving force from the beginning. His distinctive vocals and songwriting style have defined the band’s sound. The lineup changes have been numerous, but Scantlin has been the one consistent member throughout all the years. Kiss The Machine just released in May of 2025, features along with Wes Scantlin, Michael Grajewski on bass, Miles Schon – lead guitar and backing vocals and drummer Jon Smith.
The band stays firmly in their lane leaning heavy into their post grunge roots. Throughout the nine tracks, Wes Scantlin’s struggles in his personal life bleeds through the music with a raw and honest delivery. The blending of grunge, hard rock and a touch of soul combine for a diverse musical style that compares to the best material Puddle of Mudd has put out in the past.
This isn’t a perfect album. The lyrical content at times could be better. Example being “Beautimous.” I like the melody, but the lyrics fall back on the cock-rock era. My favorites are the acoustic flavored rockers “Free”, “Everything” and “Firefly”, the full out
rockers “In Love with a Dancer”, “Maniac and the percussion filled “Back Against the Wall”. Compared to the most recent releases this is a great improvement. I credit the band for releasing new material. Many bands of this era are relying on their back catalogue, resting on their laurels. I would give the new release Kiss The Machine a 7 out of 10.
I’ve seen Puddle of Mudd perform twice. I wasn’t disappointed either time.
Scantlin has had several legal altercations throughout his life, hopefully he will attain the higher road in the future and continue performing and releasing music. If he can maintain the musical level displaying his talents on Kiss The Machine, I believe all the music world would benefit.
As always, if you like what I like, you should take a test drive with the latest from Puddle of Mudd - Kiss the Machine, available on CD, Album, Download or your favorite Streaming Device. Check out several videos available on You Tube.
ly indoor cat and has never had fleas. Why do I need to prevent her from getting them? -- Carla G., Gulf Shores, Alabama
DEAR CARLA : While it seems totally reasonable to not treat Belle for fleas, there is always a risk of getting them. This is the same logic behind routine vaccinations -- it’s unlikely that an indoor cat will be exposed to rabies, but there is always a chance.
I’ll give you a personal example. Last fall, I took care of a friend’s dog for a few weeks while they were away dealing with a family emergency. On the first day, I noticed that “Kerry” was
chewing on his tail and his hair was almost gone at the base of his tail. I knew right away that he had fleas, and a visual check confirmed it. All of my pets are treated for fleas, even though my cat stays indoors. With my friend’s permission, I treated Kerry with a topical flea treatment and kept him separated from the other pets for a few days until no live fleas could be found in his fur.
I also monitored all my pets for fleas during his visit.
I hadn’t planned on Kerry arriving with fleas, but his owner had forgotten to give him his monthly flea treatment for a couple of months. This unplanned situa -
tion could have been a real problem for me and my pets.
There’s an old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and that is certainly the case with fleas, which can be hard to eliminate from your home once they get a foothold. There are many options today -- not just collars -- to prevent fleas from getting on your cat. Talk to your vet about the treatment they recommend for Belle.

New York Dolls: A Shabby Deserted Street
---John Berbrich
The New York Dolls weren’t always appreciated by record company moguls. And you have to wonder why. They weren’t so radical (except for the outfits) & they really weren’t obscene. The Dolls didn’t fit into any kind of established format so I guess no one wanted to take a chance w/ them. Alice Cooper had already done the drag thing. The Dolls dressed like women only for rare photo opportunities; otherwise they just wore weird outfits, like they had raided Cooper’s yard sale. Their music was essential rock & roll, containing all the vital energy of that musical form.
So let’s go over the band members. First & foremost would be David Johansen: primary songwriter & lyricist, w/ occasional harmonica, & of course lead vocals. His vocal style seems to have been influenced by the Rolling Stones (it’s easy to imagine Mick Jagger singing these songs). He’s got a
good sense of drama & knows when to pause for effect, when to come on strong, & when to add a little spoken ad lib. His frequent songwriting partner is Johnny Thunders: lead guitar & vocals. Thunders creates what I like to call a shambolic guitar sound; it sounds almost sloppy, yet it’s always perfect for the song. He seldom plays a solo. Sylvain Sylvain: guitar, piano, & vocals. Honestly, the guitars complement each other so well I’m not sure exactly who is playing what. What’s important is that each plays to the song & the music, whether it’s sweet or a cacophonous discord, it’s always perfect. Arthur Kane: bass. What can you say? He never gets in the way & the bass always sound right, augmenting the melody & helping to drive the beat. Jerry Nolan: drums. One of those drummers that doesn’t get attention because he doesn’t overplay, but his work is solid. On the album they get help from “The Fantas-
A few particular things I like about this album: (1) As mentioned above, you’ll hear few guitar solos (like the Ramones), although the guitars are certainly busy. Thunders cranks his stringed yowls & howls & places them around Johansen’s vocals, augmenting & emphasizing; (2) The boys have some sweet-sounding stratospheric background harmonies, particularly on “Trash” & “Jet Boy”; (3) They don’t come on all machismo. Part of that is the wardrobe, but part is also the persona that comes across in the lyr-
ics. He’s “Looking for a Kiss,” but he ain’t forcing the issue. I can imagine one of the Dolls walking down a shabby deserted street in Brooklyn; he’s a “Lonely Planet Boy,” stuck in his “Private World.” “Jet Boy” just stole his girl. Might as well ride on a “Subway Train”; speaking of which, I love how they end “Subway Train” w/ lines from the classic “Someone’s in the Kitchen with Dinah”: “We are ridin’ ridin’ ridin’…” repeated over & over.
And that’s how I think of these Dolls, riding a trashy subway deep into the eternal New York City night.
tic” Buddy Bowser on sax & producer Todd Rundgren on piano & moog.
