Theprogramaimstoproducegraduateswho,infiveyears,shallbe: occupyingsupervisorypostsinawidevarietyofcareersbutmainlyinthemediaandculture industry,theacademe,andgovernment; pursuinggraduatestudiesincommunicationartsorrelatedfieldsinthehumanitiesinreputable academicinstitutions; participatinginresearchandextensionprojectsascommunicationandculturalstudiesexperts; contributing to the understanding and disclosure on the rapid development of new media technologiesandgenresandtheirimpactonculture,society,anddailylife; producingacclaimedcreativeoutputs;and upholdingtheuniversity’shonorandexcellencethroughprofessionalism,excellentworkethic,and publicservice.
ThedepartmentofEnglishwasfoundedintheUPsystemelevenyearsafterthefoundationofthe universityin1919.Nonetheless,EnglishwastaughtsincetheopeningoftheCollegeofAgriculturein June1909.ThedepartmentdidnotonlyteachEnglishbutalsorenderedservicesinaidforEnglish thesesandmanuscripts.Furthermore,italsoofferedGermanandFrenchcoursesanddidthecopyeditingofthePhilippineAgriculturistwaybackthen.
During the Japanese occupation, the Department of English was renamed the Department of Language.Attheendofthesaidadministration,thedepartmenthadincreaseditsnumberoffaculty membersandofferedmorecourses.
TheGeneralEducation(GE)ProgrambecamemandatedtoallUPunits.TheseGEcourseswere handledbythenewly-namedDepartmentofHumanities.
Thecurrentdepartmentwasdividedintotwo,namely:theDepartmentofHumanities(DHum)and DepartmentofSocialSciences(DSS).
TheinstitutionfoundedtheBACommunicationArtsprogramofferingthreemajors:Writing,Speech Communication,andTheaterArts.Formorethanfourdecades,theBACAProgramhasproduced distinguished personalities in various communication-related fields and is still fostering undergraduatesleadingthemtopavedopportunitiesinmassmedia.
