BACHELOR OF ARTS IN

COMMUNICATION ARTS

The BA Communication Arts program is a four-year degree program offered by the Department of Humanities. It is anchored on the premise that communication is interactive, democratic, and liberalizing.

The program aims to produce graduates who, in five years, shall be: occupying supervisory posts in a wide variety of careers but mainly in the media and culture industry, the academe, and government; pursuing graduate studies in communication arts or related fields in the humanities in reputable academic institutions; participating in research and extension projects as communication and cultural studies experts; contributing to the understanding and disclosure on the rapid development of new media technologies and genres and their impact on culture, society, and daily life; producing acclaimed creative outputs; and upholding the university’s honor and excellence through professionalism, excellent work ethic, and public service.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BACA PROGRAM 1911

The department of English was founded in the UP system eleven years after the foundation of the university in 1919. Nonetheless, English was taught since the opening of the College of Agriculture in June 1909. The department did not only teach English but also rendered services in aid for English theses and manuscripts. Furthermore, it also offered German and French courses and did the copyediting of the Philippine Agriculturist way back then.

1942-45

During the Japanese occupation, the Department of English was renamed the Department of Language. At the end of the said administration, the department had increased its number of faculty members and offered more courses.

1960s

The General Education (GE) Program became mandated to all UP units. These GE courses were handled by the newly-named Department of Humanities.

1970s

The current department was divided into two, namely: the Department of Humanities (DHum) and Department of Social Sciences (DSS).

1974

The institution founded the BA Communication Arts program offering three majors: Writing, Speech Communication, and Theater Arts. For more than four decades, the BACA Program has produced distinguished personalities in various communication-related fields and is still fostering undergraduates leading them to paved opportunities in mass media.

2024

The BACA program celebrates its 50th founding anniversary!

For an undergraduate BACA student to accomplish the requirement for graduation, they must comply with a set of duties duly given by the Department of Humanities and College of Arts and Sciences. The requirements are as follows:

Mas madali yung hirap kung gusto mo ginagawa mo. Write what you know! It's OK to write about things na feel mo mababaw; if gusto mo laliman ang sinusulat mo, learn about it so that you know! and then you can write about it! Sulat lang nang sulat -- in a way parang muscle lang yan, you have to keep at it! No one becomes a better writer by /not/ writing.

JR, Alumni Member CREATE A WRITING HABIT. Facing writer's block can be challenging. What works for me is allocating a specific part of my day just for writing. No matter how long or short, I dedicate that time to writing.

PRACTICE AND PRACTICE. Writing, like any other skill, takes a lot of practice. The only way to improve is to write frequently. Try writing outside of your academic load about things you enjoy. This makes writing more enjoyable, helps avoid burnout, and allows you to find your own style.

Personally, kaya ako nag-THEA ay feel ko mas mae-explore ko ang creative side ko here na matagal kong ‘di nagagamit. Also, enjoy talaga mag-prod para sa akin but that requires having good collaboration and communication skills.

Evident pa rin yung passion or practicality especially here in the Philippines where creative industry lacks fund and support unlike the sciences, but I think it is very important to consider kung anong trabaho yung magpapasaya sa’yo at sa tingin mong hindi ka mabu-burn out. College life is already draining and for you to be motivated to work productively and professionally in the future, you should choose a major where you think hindi ka mauubusan ng energy to continue in the future. Pero kung maubos ka man, at least you know yourself na pinili mo yung bagay na gusto mo at mahal mong gawin.

HOW TO SURVIVE THEA AS YOUR MAJOR Chay, Alumni Member Plan your sem around your majors! Hindi biro ang production works especially if you’re starting pa lang to take yung mga majors mo so make sure to take them alongside with other courses that you think will be more manageable (in terms of workload).

VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEEER! Maraming opportunities for production works in campus that will help you sharpen your skills in producing THEA prods (Feb Fair, campus events, org events, thesis prods, etc).

Don’t wait for your time to take up majors to build experience, it's not as intimidating as you'd think.

TIPS IN SURVIVING YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR “Annotate! super helpful ng pag aannotate sa readings. Pero may mga times na medyo nakakalito ang mga readings sa ibang courses dahil sa mga malalalim na words kaya maximize yung pag gamit ng technology at internet when it comes to this.”

“Pag pupunta sa CAS buildings, magdala ng jacket at paglabas dapat ay may payong! malamig sa halos lahat ng classrooms ng CAS!”

Also, your super classmates are your karamay sa lahat especially sa first sem so it's essential na magkaroon ng open communication with them.”

“Explore and develop effective reading habits! Our degree program is filled to the brim with reading materials, and it's definitely possible na mag-assign ang profs ng multiple readings in one week.

To avoid feeling overwhelmed, try to explore reading habits as you go; mas prefer mo bang magbasa using a device or do you prefer handouts? Mas mareretain mo ba yung info if you highlight/annotate? Also, the perfect reading strategy varies from one student to another, so don't feel pressured kung hindi nag-work for you yung nag-work sa iba.”

ELBI TERMS

Knowing specific terms in another place is very important, especially when you're new to Elbi. But take it easy, 'cause we listed some words you may typically encounter in your first months on campus. Be sure to remember them!

KALIWA AT KANAN

These are jeepney signs for when you need to enter the campus. Kaliwa is basically the left part where CEAT, AnSci, St. Therese, and Math Building are located, while Kanan is the right part where Raymundo, Main Library, CEM, and DL Umali hall can be found.

RAYMUNDO

Raymundo is a place near the campus where you can find LOTS of food establishments, cafes, printing shops, and dormitories. It’s the go-to tambayan for those short breaks between classes!

BLUE BOOK

Blue book is a booklet that you use for exams, quizzes, or any tests. Not all professors require students to have this but it’s better to be sure! (so you should buy at least one)

AMIS

AMIS stands for Academic Management Information System. It is primarily a site for student processes, such as the enlistment of courses, checking grades, COI (Consent of Instructor), Departmental Consent, OCS Consent (Office of the College Secretary Consent) Prerog (Prerogative Enlistment), and Academic Catalog.

SAIS

SAIS stands for Student Academic Information System. Like AMIS, enlistment of courses, checking grades, paying fees, and other features to attend to student needs, are located also here.

POS

POS or Plan of Study, by the term itself, is a form where you plan your semester or overall courses to take until your last year in the university.

PREREG

Pre-Registration is the first week of enrollment. This process is done by batches where the schedule is arranged starting from higher to lower year level.

GENREG

General Registration is the second week of enrollment. This process is applicable to any batch. By this time, you can enlist the courses you failed to enroll in the Pre-Registration period.

PREROG

A teacher's prerogative is the wildcard for students who did not get enough classes in PREREG and GENREG. Here, students can ask for the instructor's permission to accept them in the class they wish to take. This process was done through email before. But now it is transferred to AMIS.

MUST HAVES

Classes will be in full swing face-to-face soon, so it’s best to be prepared! Here are some essentials you might need when you come back or go to the campus for the first time:

CLOTHES STAPLE After years of being stuck inside your house, you're finally stepping foot on campus!

You might feel lost and not know what to expect in Elbi but fret not! We have listed down clothes we think are ‘staples’ once the classes start. Here's a style recommendation just for you!

JACKETS Since it's only a few weeks before BER-months start, you should prepare yourself since chilly days in Elbi are about to come. You could also be assigned to rooms where ACs are set to 18 degrees (especially in the basement of the CAS Building), and the last thing you want to be thinking about is getting out of the class to warm yourself up while the teacher is speaking in front. So, it's best to add jackets to your closet.

TSHIRTS You can never go wrong with basic T-shirts!

Especially on days when you don't feel like dressing up.

Buy it in any color, then mix-match with your favorite jeans, and you’re ready to go! This clothing staple is also a must-have since you’ll be taking HK courses (known as PE classes) and will probably be sweating. In other instances, shirts are the goto rehearsal clothes of BACA students majoring in Theatre Arts, so if, by chance, you’re interested, keeping a few shirts now would be a good investment in the future.

BLAZERS There are courses that will require you to deliver speeches in class. That being said, a smart casual clothing piece you may want to bring in Elbi is blazers. You could pair it with a sleeveless top and jeans, a dress, slacks, literally...anything! So spice up your OOTD and ace any oral presentation!

Regardless, these are just recommendations. You can still wear WHATEVER you want because in UP there is no dress code! The university supports how students want to present themselves, so have no fear if you want to dress lazily or dress to impress. The choice is entirely up to you!

However, be aware that some professors forbid wearing shorts to class, especially in courses with laboratories. A friendly reminder to always do a vibe check before doing anything!

Like the department chairperson, Prof. Aguila’s signature is also one of the most important ones while processing a paper or form.

She handles the entirety of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). She decides the approval or disapproval of special cases addressed in letters such as late registration, cancellation of subject, readmission, etc.

ABOUT UPLB COM ARTS SOCIETY The UPLB Com Arts Society is a duly recognized academic organization and has served as the official organization for Communication Arts majors in the University of the Philippines Los Baños since 1976. It aims to cultivate the human perception towards the arts and the humanities to provide outlets for the artistic talents of members focusing on the three aspects of the specialization of the Communication Arts program which are Writing, Speech Communication, and Theater Arts.

Founded on July 15, 1976, the organization was formed with the following objectives in mind: 1. To serve as the official organization for Communication Arts students; 2. To provide practical training experience in writing, speech communication and theater arts through seminars and workshops; 3. To encourage appreciation of the arts and humanities through participation in sociocultural activities; 4. To promote academic excellence; and 5. To maximize participation in other fields.
