CHED names UPLB COEs for 2016-2018 by Jessa Jael S. Arana

Various program areas in UPLB have been declared centers of excellence (COE) by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). CHED signed Memorandum Order No. 38 on Nov. 23, 2015, granting COE status to the following UPLB program areas: agriculture, development communication, biology, forestry, veterinary medicine, information technology, statistics, and environmental science. A COE is “a department within a higher education institution

(HEI), which demonstrates excellence in instruction, research and publication, extension and linkages and institutional qualifications.” The COE program is a provision in the Higher Education Act of 1994 that aims to sustain/ develop excellence of HEIs. CHED also named the UPLB chemical engineering program as a center of development (COD). A COD refers to a department within an HEI that demonstrates a potential to become a COE in the future.
