Pahinungod programs and volunteerism We coordinated, monitored and supplemented training sessions for curriculum-based NSTP activities and selected academic courses, implemented literacy programs on reading enhancement and appreciation, environment awareness, and community arts and culture development. We also implemented the Lingap Kalusugan Integrated Feeding and Nutrition Program, with help from the Philippine Geothermal Power Production Company, Inc. Extension and action programs National Corn-Based Farmer-Scientists Research, Development and Extension Training Program (FSTP). The UPLB-based FSTP has transformed farmers into empowered decision makers through science-based farming. From 2009 to 2015, FSTP covered 31 provinces and 64 municipalities, helping make farms more productive through training programs aimed to increase agriculture productivity, values education and entrepreneurship. Corn farmers have increased their harvest from 0.1-2.0 tons to 4-7 tons per hectare. Many of them are now engaged in farming as a business. Agri resource maps. wilting in crops such as tomatoes and eggplants, and is a possible alternative to chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (VAM) inoculants. VAM is a symbiotic association of beneficial fungus and roots of higher plants that enhances their defense mechanism against soil-borne pathogen. We improved the process by harnessing VAM through a third symbiont fungi. Enhanced VAMRI inoculant is effective as a plant growth promoter and biopesticide for various crops.

Ugnayan sa Pamayanan. In a bid to strengthen communication and coordination to enhance the protection and conservation of Mount Makiling, we held the Ugnayan sa Pamayanan in four (4) barangays in Calamba City, two (2) in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, and at the Provincial Public Safety Office of Laguna. Edible Landscaping. The Edible Landscaping Research and Extension Program provided expert advise on EL to various groups, i.e., teachers, members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and students, including groups

Promoting the Use of Knowledge and Technologies Innovation and technology hub We are going to construct the Technology and Products Display Center and Science and Technology Hub near Baker Hall . This will serve as the repository of UPLB products and technologies and a venue for new and emerging concepts, innovations and technologies. The architectural plan and bill of materials for the Innovation and Technology Hub have been completed and the bidding for its construction has already been endorsed. Research publications productivity From November 2014 to December 2016, we had 49 international publication awardees, 274 articles published in ISI refereed journals, 113 in international refereed journals and 103 in local refereed journals (Table 2.) We helped researchers publish their research results in ISI- and international-refereed journals by holding the Scientific Paper Writing Workshop (SPWW) series, which is funded by the DA-BIOTECH. Furthermore, to encourage the publication of research results, we opened the Publication Grant Program to all faculty and REPS and staff with unpublished thesis and dissertations and research results from completed projects. Initially funded by the DA-BAR, the Program covers writing and editorial services, journal matching service and a Publication Fee Loan. The Publication Grant Program prioritizes graduates of the SPWWS and the recipients of the Basic Research Program. Public service Communities and the general public should always be able to benefit from our expertise, discoveries and technological products. Our research and development (R&D) activities had consistently been imbued with the value of contributing to improving the way people live. Contribution to national policy and development agenda UPLB contributed to policy development and formulation with the faculty and staff sharing their expertise as technical experts, advisers, advocates, and consultants in various areas in agri-aquaculture, forestry, climate change, biotechnology, food security, sustainable forest management, and others. The year 2016 was highlighted by UPLB lending its voice on issues such as genetically modified Bt talong testing and development.

from Korea, and conducted a writeshop for a book on edible landscaping as a food production approach. Nutrition and Lactation Clinics. Our nutrition and wellness clinic promotes nutritional well-being through counselling, in some cases, with other units such as the Department of Human Kinetics and University Health Service towards a more holistic nutrition approach. We also advocated the establishment of lactation stations in the University to protect, promote and support breastfeeding in the workplace. Elderly care. The Elderly Development Program (EDP) aims to help address the unmet bio-psychosocial needs of the elderly by providing monthly and annual health and wellness services for senior citizens of UPLB and nearby communities. Since 2011 we have served around 800 elders. Ri-Co Blend for Rice Self-Sufficiency. Rice self-sufficiency can be achieved with the help of corn. This belief is anchored on the fact that the country imports only 10% of its rice requirement, which can be substituted by other alternatives like corn. UPLB developed an open-pollinated white corn variety (IPB Var 6), which has higher lysine and tryptophan than other white corn varieties. SNAP Hydroponics. Simple Nutrient Addition Program (SNAP) hydroponics for high-value leafy vegetables such as lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, herbs, tomato, pepper, and cucumber has gained even more popularity among stakeholders from all walks of life and has helped promote urban agriculture. Conservation farming. The Conservation Farming Village (CFV) Program is anchored on the need to protect the land while using it to feed the people. It promotes a new mindset where science, innovations and traditional knowledge are allowed to come together. The CFV team taught agroforestry techniques in upland communities. BIDANI Network Program. We are revitalizing the BIDANI Network Program through capacity building of implementers and LGUs. We will continue to offer training programs for LGUs, implement the participative nutrition enhancement project, and work with adolescents to emphasize their roles in nutrition and development.
