ABLAZE: The FIRST virtual Iceberg

One of the most exciting and fearinducing facts in life is that most of the time, we don’t know what comes next. To compensate for this, we learned to adapt and use our brains to see patterns and solve problems. It is given that UPLB students have this ability developed but those who were more exceptional than most were differentiated through the comeback of the first-ever online installment of a logicbased quiz contest conducted by UP ERGLB - IcebERG: Ablaze.

After preparing for almost half a year, the event finally commenced last March 12, 2022, with a total prize pool of Php 10,000. This wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of Aira Mikka Jubelea who served as the overall head of the event, the Ad Hoc Committee, hosts, facilitators, game masters, and the partners and sponsors. The major sponsors are Multivector Review and Training Center, and Engr. Geo Aller. The minor sponsor is Engr. Rei-Ann M. Dayapera. The special

donors are Eggy, Engr. Ferdinand Ramirez Jr., Engr. Rochelle Marie Flores, Engr. Richelle Dela Cruz, Engr. Ryan Francis Alvar, and Engr. Josh Bianzon. The major partner is UP Engineering Students’ Guild and lastly, the minor partner is University of the Philippines Civil Engineering Society (UPCES).

The expertise of the judges Dr. Allan Alinea, Engr. Rock Tomas, and Instructor Aaron Paul Lusanta were deemed helpful as the quiz commenced which allowed the event to run smoothly even more so at formulating the questions where their suggestions made the event more exhilarating.

Overall, this online logic-based quiz contest gave a leeway for the students to enjoy the academic year even for just a night. The culture and trademark of the organization “where ERG goes, fun follows” stands still as it ended with everyone exhausted but also fun-filled and fulfilled.

UP ERG-LB hosted its 2nd installment of the Freshmen EEntroduction

Following the success of its first iteration in 2020, the UP Engineering Radio Guild - Los Baños (UP ERG-LB) hosted the 2021 Freshmen EEntroduction: Envision which aims to guide and inspire the incoming electrical engineering (EE) freshmen through bona fide experiences given by residents and alumni of the organization.

After witnessing the 2020 Freshmen EEntroduction, Trixia Briones, the event head of 2021 Freshmen EEntroduction, realized the importance of equipping the incoming freshman with the necessary knowledge and information as they start their college journey as an EE student.

“Just like the other freshmen students, I experienced being lost at the beginning. I did not know how to understand the course guide, how to handle and manage time as a college student, what the subject codes, course units, and jargon mean, and what to expect at the university as an electrical engineering student,” Briones said in an interview.

“This realization and experience of mine greatly influenced me to continue the event as I know that it will be beneficial to the incoming freshmen students as it serves as an avenue for them to raise their concerns and have clarifications that will allow them to anticipate and envision their next steps.” she added.

The ad hoc committee of the 2021 Freshmen EEntroduction also improved upon various aspects of the event – from the program flow to its publications and endorsements.

Briones stated that their ad hoc committee adopted an interactive approach to the program by adding game and raffle segments in between each testimony wherein participants are allowed to turn on their microphones.

“Aside from that, there was a website created specifically for the event which showcased the event highlights and the organization behind the event. The website also had a part that directed to the google form registration of participants” she added.

The 2021 Freshmen EEntroduction was endorsed by the UPLB College of Engineering and Agro- Industrial Technology (CEAT) and sponsored by the UPLB Engineering Society, UP Engineering Students’ Guild, and CEAT Student Council.

Briones said that these partnerships and endorsements helped boost and promote the event to the incoming EE freshmen as about 50 EE freshmen attended the event.

However, Briones cited some difficulties that the ad hoc committee encountered prior to the event but she stated that the major problem of the event was its time constraint.

Envision was held on September 15, 2021 via Zoom Cloud Meetings.

Salayog elected as USC Councilor; Visaya, Reginio wins CEAT-SC Chairpersonship, Vice-Chairpersonship

On April 23, 2022, the results of the University Student Council (USC) and the College Student Council (CSC) Elections were released, declaring three members of the UP Engineering Radio Guild – Los Baños (UP ERG-LB) as part of the new set of officers.

In the USC, Justin Glenn Salayog was elected as one of the seven new councilors. Niezelle Mae Visaya (UP ERG-LB Representative) and Christian Vincent Reginio (Tau Alpha Representative), on the other hand, were elected as the new Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the CEAT Student Council, respectively.

“Bilang Iskolar ng Bayan, lagi nating sinasabi na tayo ay para sa bayan. Batid kong may iba’t iba tayong pamamaraan upang paglingkuran ang bayan at para sa akin, ang pagtanggap sa hamon na tumakbo bilang USC Councilor, hindi lamang mga mag-aaral ang ating ipinaglalabanan kundi kasama na rin ang iba’t iba pang mga sektor ng ating lipunan,” “Salayog said in an interview.

[As an Iskolar ng Bayan, we always say that we are for the people. I know we have different ways to serve the people, but for me, my way is accepting the challenge to run as a USC Councilor. We are fighting not only for the students but also for other sectors of our society.]

He stressed that being a USC Councilor is a

good start to serving our country even though he is still a student.

Reginio stated that he initially eyed for CEAT Chairpersonship. “Noong nalaman ko na tatakbo rin Niezelle, mas napanatag ako kasi alam ko na same din kami ng aspirations for CEAT,” said Reginio.

[When I found out that Niezelle will also run, I was more reassured because I knew we had the same aspirations for CEAT.]

Reginio believes that Visaya shares the same ambitions as him. Hence, whether he or Visaya gets the Chairpersonship, the footing of the council will still be the same.

The elections ended with a final turnout of 38.74 percent, with 5,179 voters. Salayog, under the SAKBAYAN (Samahan ng Kabataan para sa Bayan) party, obtained a total of 3, 368 votes. While local college candidates, Visaya and Reginio, the standard bearers of CEASE (CEAT Alliance for Student Empowerment) party, accumulated a total of 948 and 922 votes, respectively.

CEASE and SAKBAYAN held their Meeting de Avance on April 12 and 13, respectively. The latter party emphasized the battle for education and democratic rights, while the former party emphasized boosting student representation by collaborating with CEAT-OCS and hold departmental dialogues with its constituents.

The launch of the very first ERG Event Refresher

In an effort to help prepare the resident members for the year’s upcoming events, the UP Engineering Radio Guild - Los Baños launched it’s very first ERG Event Refresher, a two day event that aimed to help members who have little to no experiences of being involved in events learn from other member’s experiences.

On September 4, 2021 via Zoom Cloud Meetings. Kristel Pagaduan, Rodgie Aquino and Geraldenne Velasquez hosted the very first day of this event and gave it a very energetic start. Four qualified resident members were invited and each gave their time to share their experiences in four different aspects in preparation for an event such as Hosting, making an Event Proposal, Sponsorships, and Creation of Ad Hoc Teams.

AJ Balmeo was the very first to present, sharing his experiences in Hosting. He highlighted three aspects in hosting such as the different qualities a host must have, some hosting tips that could help in bringing out the confidence of the host, and how to deal with hosting in an online setup.

Mikka Jubelea shared some insights in making an event proposal. According to her, in making an event proposal, the event head is the one responsible for planning, mobilizing, and coordinating the event and the Ad Hoc Committee. She also highlighted some helpful tips in planning and brainstorming for the creation of an event proposal.

Third to speak during the first day was Patrick Alarcon who shared his experiences regarding sponsorships. In his talk, he highlighted that sponsorships are not just about getting funds

and it can be about other things. Patrick shared some steps that can help in organizing and managing a sponsorship, which helped members get some insights on how the organization events get their funding.

Last to speak was Katrina Domalaon, who gave some thoughts and experiences in creating an Ad Hoc Team and Effective Project Management. Her experiences in the organization has helped the members learn the essential part in creating and handling an event.

The second day of ERG Event Refresher happened on September 5, 2021 via Zoom Cloud Meetings, which was hosted by Malvin Dollano and Chrizelle Amiyan. Topics for this day focuses on the events that were previously handled by the organization such as IceBERG, BrainfrEEze, OutrEEch Program, and ERGxecute. Resident members were joined by alumni who were the previous event heads and ad hoc members of the said events who were there to re-introduce the events to the resident members.

Christian Retreta, an alumni of the organization and event head of the 11th installment of IcebERG: A Logic-Based Quiz Contest, gave his time with the members to share his experiences as its event head. Crucial aspects in the event’s preparation such as its management structure, preparation period, and project work plan were mentioned. Past installments of IcebERG were done in a physical setting in UPLB. But due to the pandemic, Christian mentioned that preparations will be different in an online setup.

The former Program & Forum Head of BrainfrEEze, Raphael Fransisco L. De Jesus, spent his time with the members to share some tips re -

garding the Fundamentals of Management Function. BrainfrEEze was also re-introduced which is a series of events aiming to promote EE as a field of study to high school students.

Next to present was John Paul Ligutan, who was one of the organizing members who handled the last outrEEch held in Los Baños. Included in his talk were the objectives of the outrEEch which aims to educate, bring joy, inspire and uplift. Highlighted during his talk were important things to plan and specific responsibilities of committees involved for the initiative.

Adrian Ramos was next to present about ERGxecute which was first launched during the previous year. He was the first Event Head of ERGxecute which aims to promote student interactions during online classes by engaging them in e-sports. Some of the highlights during his talk were tournament format and some of the problems that were encountered during the preparation of the event.

With all the preparation and execution done for each event, one of the most important parts in concluding each event is by doing a Postevent Evaluation. Micah Enriquez imparted some of her experiences in making this evaluation. She highlighted the different parts of a narrative report, evaluating the event, providing the background information of the event, and asking the right questions which could help further improve the preparation and execution of each event.

Overall, this event helped residents and new members of the organization prepare themselves for the events lined up for the whole academic year of 2021-2022.

UP ERG-LB marks its 17th anniversary in the virtual setting

For the second time in the organization’s history, the UP Engineering Radio Guild - Los Baños (UP ERG-LB) celebrated its week-long 17th founding anniversary in a virtual setting with the theme “Iridescence: Colors intertwined beyond the spectrum” on January 26-30, 2022.

This year’s anniversary celebration revolved around the concept of iridescence, gracing the theme with vibrant colors as a shift from the usual UP ERG-LB publicity materials heavily based upon the color of the organization’s official logo.

The accompanying phrase, colors intertwined beyond the spectrum, represents the organization’s diverse members coming from different walks of life, who hail together as one throughout the organization’s 17 years of existence.

Aiming to introduce the theme to the public, the UP ERG-LB members participated in the Display Picture (DP) Blast on

January 26. Fatima Joie Flores, one of the heads of the event’s design team and the Assistant Vice President for External Affairs, designed the DP used by both the resident members and the alumni.

Along with the DP Blast, the resident members also changed their cover photos and posted their ERG Bingo stories with the aim to further amplify the celebration’s official kickstart.

The organization also released publicity materials through Facebook and Twitter from January 27 to 28, showcasing the organization’s brief history and its milestones. Included in the publicity materials are the notable feats from various fields such as in board examinations where some of the alumni emerged as topnotchers.

On January 29, the organization released its official virtual exhibit through Artsteps following the last year’s successful launch, showcasing the organization’s resi-

dent members, alumni, and events.

Held on the same day, the alumni and residents’ bonding day was spearheaded by the Internal Affairs committee led by Joshua Rago, with the aim to foster camaraderie among each other through fun-filled games and activities.

The week-long celebration concluded on January 30 with a raffle draw streamed live on the organization’s official Facebook page, catering to all of the organization’s members who shared the UP ERG-LB history’s publicity material along with their favorite memory with the organization.

To recall, the UP ERG-LB was established on December 6, 2004, and is currently recognized as an academic organization in the Department of Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (CEAT) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

UP ERG-LB joins the #Tumindig Movement

On the 2nd of August 2021, UP ERG-LB joined the #Tumindig Solidarity Movement instigated by the UPLB CEAT Student Council, wherein the theme originated from animation director & comic artist, Kevin Raymundo, also known as the famous Tarantadong Kalbo (TK).

The post featured a photo attachment of the council and CEAT organizations as anthropomorphic closed fists along with the statement, “Nakikiisa at tumitindig ang CEAT Student Council at ang mga organisasyon sa CEAT para sa makataong pag-unlad. Para sa edukasyon, manggagawa, magsasaka, at estudyante, hinding hindi magpapatinag ang Konseho sa mga nais mang-abuso, mansamantala, at magpahirap. Para sa mga inhinyerong makamasa!”

“ T u m i n d i g ” was posted on July

17, 2021 on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Raymundo said he created the digital artwork out of frustration over the Philippine government response against the COVID-19 pandemic. The illustration featured anthropomorphic closed fists that are similar to those popularized in the country by President Rodrigo Duterte and his allies. Almost all are submitting to some higher being while one is standing and glowing proudly, which seems to be ‘resisting’ to the higher being. It can also be seen that the fist to the right of the glowing fist is ‘peeking’ at what the standing fist is doing. The art snowballed and within hours, online artists started posting their own iterations of Tarantadong Kalbo’s work, populating it with more fist people who were standing up, with the caption “Artista ng Bayan, Ngayon ay Lumalaban! #Tumindig.”

Choices can be very expensive

After Filipinos witnessed one of the most divided elections that the Philippine political history has ever seen, the late dictator’s son Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected to be the new head of our state. Throughout the elections, Marcos Jr.’s competency to lead and make sound decisions for the benefit of the country has been widely criticized and questioned. It has almost been a week since the Philippines started transitioning to the administration. It goes without saying that the newly elected President must already hit the ground running in addressing impending problems the country is facing and one of which is inflation.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reported a four-year high inflation rate in the month of June 2022 which is at 6.1%. Among the contributors to the higher inflation rate includes the price increase in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels which saw an increase of 6.6%. These basic commodities and services

are very much involved in the daily routine and livelihood of the regular Filipino people. More than these numbers, the effect of inflation is significantly being felt by the majority of our countrymen.

Marcos Jr. tackled the issue of inflation last July 5 where he infamously discredited the reported inflation figures by the PSA. “6.1%? I will have to disagree with that number, we are not that high.”, he said. It came as no surprise when this statement of Marcos Jr. received a lot of backlash and criticism from different authorities, experts, and even regular citizens. When the public is struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis caused to inflation, the last thing they would want to hear is for the head of state to not recognize and accept that there is a problem. It is completely disrespectful and insensitive for a leader—who is used to living a life of lavish and luxury—cannot sympathize with the suffering experienced by the public. One may argue that people are just blow-

featured

ing this issue out of proportion. However, this is indeed a serious concern that must be recognized. We have our prime decision maker who can easily and carelessly dismiss the findings of a highly credible and authoritative source of information. How could we expect that the proper actions would be taken, that the right solutions would be formulated, and ultimately sound decisions would be made if in the first place our decision makers have a feeble grasp of the true situation on the ground? This is only the beginning and one can only be hopeful that we would see less of similar absurd statements from the President.

Whether we agree or not with the result of the elections, it is apparent that Marcos Jr. is the type of President that majority of Filipinos wanted. From inflated prices of goods and services to the weakening purchasing power of the peso, one can only wonder if this is already the cost of the collective choice of the Filipino people.

Try this trick! ISPs Hate him!

Does your internet connection disconnect frequently and you’re too lazy to reset the Wi-Fi router every time? Are you interested in automating this repetitive process? Don’t worry! This might be the article for you!

Before we proceed with programming the board, if you want to execute this project, we need to purchase the materials which are:

Wemos D1 Mini - The controls of the project. It is connected to the Wi-Fi, and upon disconnection, activates the normally closed relay to reset the router.

5VDC Mechanical Relay - Any 5VDC relay will do as long as its contact capacity is rated for the voltage and current of the Wi-Fi router. In my case, the rating for my router is 12V 2A, so I bought SRD-05VDC-SL-C, which can handle up to 7A 28VDC. Also, this relay already has a flyback diode. Note that 5VDC is highlighted since Wemos D1 Mini works on 5V logic, i.e., you’ll need to step-up or step-down the voltage output of Wemos if the relay works on higher or lower voltage level respectively. It is also important to use a DC relay because AC relays cannot handle long exposure to arcing.

5VDC Wall adapter - Micro USB to power the Wemos.

Other materials such as Soldering iron, wires, etc. - These are just extra materials (if you have them available use them), the soldering iron could be replaced with a breadboard and some jumper wires for connecting the Wemos D1 Mini to the relay.

Now that we’re done purchasing the materials, I’d like to put some warning before we proceed, we’ll be dealing with higher voltages (higher than 5V, which we are not used to in electronics) and there might be risks such as fires or electrocution which I am not liable for. The hardware is licensed under The TAPR Open Hardware License while the source code is protected by the MIT License. If you really want to do this project without risks, I suggest replacing the load with low level components such as LEDs. It is pretty much the same concepts and learnings, just without the risk involving higher level voltages.

Moving on, if you are a complete beginner, you should download the Arduino IDE from https://www.arduino.cc/en/software. You should also learn how to install libraries from here https://docs.arduino.cc/software/ide-v1/tutorials/installing-libraries.

First let’s wire the relay to Wemos, I’ll be using pin 12 which is pin D6 in Wemos. This will be the wire used for controlling the Relay. We’ll connect the Vcc of the relay to the 5V pin of the Wemos, and then the relay’s ground pin to the Wemos’ ground pin. Then we’ll connect the pin 12 wire to the control pin of the relay. If you are confused which pins to connect to, just consult the datasheet for your type of relay. For the relay used in this article, it has two relays on one board, since I want to use relay 2, I connected pin 12 to the “In2” pin of my relay board shown in the photo below. I used an LED as my load in this prototype. Note that it is safer to isolate the control and the relay by providing a separate Vcc supply to the relay and connecting it to its JD-Vcc pin.

Below is a better illustration of how to connect a relay from [1]. The input side shows the ground, 5V Vcc pin and the signal pin. This signal pin is the pin that should be connected to the pin 12 (D6) of Wemos. In the output side, NC means normally-closed, C is for common, and NO means normally-open. In this article, we used the NC contacts. To attach a wire in the NC contact, you need to loosen the screw using a flat-screwdriver.

If you are using this project to automate resetting your router, you need to cut one wire of the router as shown in photo below. This wire will be connected to the NC and C pins of the relay.

Now that we’re done with the wiring and circuit. We’ll proceed with programming the board. First is including the ESP8266WiFI library which helps in programming the board in the Arduino IDE. Next is defining WIFI_SSID and WIFI_PASS which should be the name of your Wi-Fi and the password. This should be placed inside the quotation marks.

Next is the setup() part in Arduino. Serial.begin() is for starting the serial monitor for debugging. We start with the relayPin (pin 12, D6) as high for reasons stated in comments of the code. In short, the logic is inverse thus a high pin means the LED indicator of the relay is off, thus NC contact is closed. We set-up the mode of the WiFi as station mode using WIFI_STA since it will be connecting to a network, and it will not be the access point. We disconnect any prior connections and begin connecting to the Wi-Fi using Wi-Fi.begin(WIFI_SSID, WIFI_PASS). Wemos then waits 12 second until the board is connected to the Wi-Fi, if not, it will restart and search the Wi-Fi again. You could lower 12 seconds if your average connection time is faster than 12 seconds.

Once the board is connected, it will proceed to the main loop. This loop just uses function wifiChecker() which resets the board after five seconds if the Wi-Fi connection is lost. By resetting the board, the prior process in setup() repeats.

Function relayControl() in wifiChecker() just sets relayPin to low to open the NC contacts.

The code used in this article can be downloaded in https://github. com/xern-eaus/automatic-wi-fi-reset-using-wemos-d1-mini/blob/ main/wemos_wifi.ino. That’s all for this tutorial, have fun and keep tinkering!

Hello DEP!

Unparalleled. The term that I associate with all your efforts and hardships for the organization. As corny as it may sound, but it is what I observed and experienced as I oversee the organization. From Freshmen EEntroduction, to IcebERG, to our internal events, you have shown enthusiasm and passion in serving. The Executive Committee are aware that the past semesters have been exhausting for many, yet you managed to help and provide assistance whenever there are needed to be accomplished.

Enough with the formality. Maraming salamat sa inyo, ERG!!!!! Whenever may kahit isa sa inyo na lumalaban ay naiinspire ako na lumaban rin for our organization. Hindi biro mga activities natin, dagdag pa yung additional responsibilities natin due to unforeseen circumstances.

Excellence is great! Pero if ang kapalit ay sobrang pagod, learn to say no. Siyempre, we need to balance din ito. Kailangan well-aware tayo sa ating priority, sa capability natin and sa urgency ng task. And if hindi talaga kaya, mayroon at mayroong means para maaccomplish yan.

Alam niyo, I have dreamt of having our General Assembly physically. It is sad na hindi na matutupad ‘yon under our term. I want to see your smiles—smiles na hindi restricted sa isang parisukat. I can tell na masaya makipagkulitan sa inyo. Nevertheless, I am still grateful that nakilala ko kayo and have the chance to serve you. Kayo ay mag-iingat palagi! Mahal ko kayo <3.

Hello my dearest ERG!

First and foremost, I would like to thank you all for your unending support and trust to the 17th Executive Committee. Also, I would also like to thank you for believing in me as your Executive Vice President. Handling this position has been such a privilege. Although I’m not a perfect leader, I did learn a lot from this position. Serving this organization is a very fulfilling experience. Without ERG, I wouldn’t have been able to grow out of my comfort zone. And most importantly, I wouldn’t have met all of you. This organization has helped me gain back my confidence, which I struggled to regain ever since I entered this university. Looking back sa aming term, I’m very happy na nakasama namin kayo sa iba’t ibang events. Know that hindi magiging possible ang success nilang lahat kundi dahil sainyo! No effort was wasted. I know it can be very exhausting for all of us, especially during the previous semesters and given the setup that we have because of this pandemic. But I know everything will be better as we transition to a physical setup and get to enjoy each other’s company more. And I’m also very happy to see our organization grow each semester.

To the 17th Executive Committee, thank you so much for all your time and effort for this organization. Know that I am very proud of all the things that you have achieved academically, individually and for this organization. I know that you have inspired a lot of people with what you do. Also, mamimiss ko mga meetings natin and mga random chika and kuwentuhan.

Mahal na mahal ko kayong lahat, and serve the organization well <3

Dearest ERG peeps,

First of all, I would like to say that I am eternally grateful to you guys for entrusting me with this type of responsibility. I did my very best to be the best leader I can be and regardless of my lapses, I appreciate the effort, help, & support you have given to me, your friends, and the whole organization.

We definitely have been through so much together. A rollercoaster of emotions were felt. Good and bad experiences were witnessed firsthand. Even in the silent, mundane times, we were there for each other. ERG was here for everyone.

I hope we all don’t forget easily about all the moments we shared. Let this be a reminder of where we started and what we have now become. May this be our driving force to move forward and become better. I am always proud of you, DEP. Thank you for taking-on this journey with us (Exec). You deserve all the rest and peace that you need because you have done so well this year, may it be a small or big achievement. I love you, DEP.

May we continue to uphold the values of this organization, further strengthen our bond, and persevere improvement.

Wednesday Guerrero VP for Secretariat

Hello madlang ERG people!

I am very grateful to you all that we have survived another year of grueling classes and nonstop backlogs. Our family grew again this year, and we all went through ups and downs together. I hope that the new babies of the organization have the learnings and willpower to learn new things during their stay in the university while the older batches have reignited their passion to serve ERG through their remaining years. I has been a pleasure to me that I have been putting out my best to guide and help the organization with the expertise that I have during my term as an executive member.

We all entered the ERG with different stories and diverse backgrounds; however, we are all gathered in this wonderful organization which helps us strive to get become the best version of ourselves. Let us constantly remind ourselves the mantra of UP ERG LB, “Where ERG goes fun follows”, which gives use the power to move forward throughout many factors (PF pun intended).

Thank you very much in supporting us on this journey, I hope all the best in your endeavors. Serve the org well!

sana kayo ay okay lang!

hello, dear erg people!

I am beyond grateful for being part of this organization that I genuinely know and feel I belong to. Looking back when I was still an applicant, I never really saw myself leading because there were so many who were more capable and had made great impressions straight away. I missed most of ERG events and vividly remember how I was only able to attend a single GA pre-pandemic. In a nutshell, I was like the ‘latak’ or the ‘feel-komag-inactive-na-‘to’ type of member.

I honestly want to be as active as the others, but I just can’t keep up with all my affiliations at that time. Despite this perception that I have built around myself and other people, you still gave me the opportunity to materialize what I have envisioned for the org. Up to this date, I still can’t make sense of how many of you believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself to be part of the executive committee. I admit that I have my own share of shortcomings, and I sincerely apologize. I just hope that I have made some difference even on the tiniest aspect of you DEP and the organization.

To the Executive Committee, thank you for all the patience and all the understanding. To the Internal Affairs Committee, I will forever be indebted to you. To those who have a similar story to mine, just grab it and seize the opportunity. Again, thank you for everything, DEP.

Hello, everyone! I hope that you are all doing well.

As I have also experienced, I know that this online set-up takes a huge toll on our mental health, especially as most of us are trying to cope with our academic and other tasks alone at home. Nowadays, it may feel like motivation is really hard to come by. What you seem to want is to rest and feel less pressured.

Dear ERGlings, it’s okay to rest if you’re exhausted. Get a little breather once in a while; it will help you. As much as you can, please do not feel pressured by how much the others are progressing while you seem to be stuck in your place. It will only make the mud on your feet thicker and it will make it harder for you to move forward.

As the VP for TNA, I apologize if I also have my shortcomings, especially this semester. Please know that I feel thankful for the support I get from you guys. I hope that your passion and dedication to the organization won’t leave your kind hearts. Please do not take the organization for granted. We’re a family here, not just a simple group. Thank you, and I hope to see you all soon!

Mula noong una pa lamang, maraming salamat UP ERG-LB dahil ikaw ang aking tahanan.

The past semesters have been difficult in various aspects for everyone, maybe even worse for some of us. Despite that, we used every hardship to come closer and stronger as an individual and a family. We learned to empathize and adjust to the situation of each other whilst growing holistically and bringing the best out of our organization through the conducted past events. Although we managed to survive and turn every challenge into success, we must also acknowledge our mistakes and shortcomings, and continue to strive for development, both individually and collectively. In doing so, we uphold the core values of ERG which are centered towards the betterment of the organization, its members, and the community.

May we keep on fighting, for ourselves and for each other. If you are not in a good place right now, take all the time and space you need. Please know that we are always with you and you can always come back home to ERG.

You are always appreciated, DEP.

I would just like to extend my deepest gratitude to you, DEP, for giving me the opportunity to serve you as your Vice President for Sports and Leisure for this term 2021-2022. Although my term has not been as successful as I visioned it to be, I am still happy to have accomplished most of my plans and responsibilities in bettering the organization. I hope to see our organization grow more in the coming years, not just in numbers but in the individual skills of each member as well. You are the best orgmates, indeed! Even though most of our time was spent online due to this pandemic, the outputs that we, our organization, have produced were still exceptional. Certainly, serving the org was a great avenue to learn interpersonal skills and grow professionally as a person. May this be an inspiration to the younger generations of the org, I hope to see you more and take such roles in the future. Cheers to more bonding with you DEP! Galingan and goodluck sa acads. Padayon future electrical engineers!

Dearest ERG, Dear

“Samuel Teodoro”

One’s path is unique to the person who is capable of navigating its space. It can be rough, challenging, and swift, but above all, it is unique and stellar that it makes the person shine in their own way. This seems to be the case for one of the alumni of UP ERG-LB whose passion and intellect resonated with his achievements.

Samuel Teodoro was the president of the organization from 2017 to 2018. He was also the Councilor, Education, and Research Committee head of CEAT Student Council UPLB. Aside from his leadership roles, he’s also an academic achiever which is evident when he graduated in June 2018 Cum Laude.

His grit and excellence didn’t stop when he graduated from the university. For his graduate studies, Samuel was accepted to four top universities, three of which granted him

academic scholarships. Having a clear understanding of his vision, he’s now pursuing his higher education at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology’s M.S.-Ph.D. Integrated Program.

As a multifaceted person, he’s also skilled in graphic design. He gave the UPLB DEE’s official logo a new look. The logo incorporated the components that represent the major aspect of the university’s department that meticulously formed a symbol that would further amplify the pride of its current constituents and its future engineers.

Beyond anything else, what made these achievements possible is his love for learning. His journey signifies that prioritizing excellence, learning, and improvement comes a long and exciting way. A role model, indeed, and inspiration for ERGlings.

Tips from a Board Topnotcher

If you want to read a story on how to succeed in college, then you should be asking other people who become laudes, achievers, winners, etc. I am telling you right now that this is not a story of achievement but rather, is about my struggles, actions, and motivations before and during the board exam. But before anything else, let me dedicate this article to those who failed their exams, got stuck in manus/thesis, cry over a project that does not work. Yep, you read it right! This is my story. College is not friendly to a sleepy and introverted person like me. And it gets harder as you get older, especially with the major subjects. But I am not discouraging you. Nope. My point is the fact that I top the boards means you have hope as well, no matter how hard studying is for you. It’s true people only see your success but never the tears behind those achievements. That’s why I am going to tell you a story about it.

I started studying before the pandemic hit and plan to take the board exam last April 2020. Again, this is not an easy road. Pandemic happens, boards got canceled, and every part of my plan changes. You know what makes studying for boards harder, uncertainty. You never know whether PRC will cancel your boards or not. It will be hard to decide whether to study or start looking for a job. Anxiety will be your enemy. So, I will share

the things I did to thrive despite those challenges. Number 1: be ambitious! I had a goal back then. I wanted this. I wanted to ace the boards. Do not let anyone dictate your future and manipulate your mindset. If you know that you can do it, then it is enough to fly and soar high. You just got to believe yourself and work hard for it. Speaking of working hard, make sure to set goals. It will be your direction. Wake up in the morning with the goal in mind. It doesn’t have to be reading notes or computing every day, it can also be resting or sleeping all day. Yes, resting should be part of your routine because it will be your fuel to get energized and your break from burning out. Relaxation can vary from person to person so explore the things or hobbies that can keep the fire burning. From talking to friends or family to watching Netflix, reading books, drinking coffee, remember that you are not lazy if you do these things because you are entitled to do so and you deserve it. Also, it will be helpful if you have people whom you can lean on. They will be your pillar when times get tough, and everything seems to be in chaos. Lastly, do not give up. I know each one of us has a fighter inside us. It will be tough out there, but you are tougher. Fighting a global pandemic for more than 2 years now is proof that you had a warrior in you.

Board exam can be scary, it will be tiring, it will exhaust the life out of you. But then, there are things that you can do about it. That’s the best part of it, you have control over your actions and decisions. So, make sure to face it head-on!

Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk haha. Hope this article reminds you that it is normal to feel lost before taking a board exam and you are not alone. However, it does not mean that you can never succeed at anything. Yes, you can, and you will. People like us just need to work twice as hard but that is the reason why life is more fulfilling for us.

somewhere in between

I feel wrapped in the uncertainty of life itself. It’s not new to me but the scary part of it is that I’m in it deeper this time. It’s that point where everything seems so blurry and in a haywire. You don’t know what you’re holding on to. Why are you holding on to it? How will you continue holding on to it? Questions that may seem simple enough for one to answer, but what about for those who find it hard to suffice what comes after that point?

But then again it’s just a point. It’s somewhere in between. In between the letters and words. In between our past and the future, it’s the present.

The best thing we can do when we are in it, in the present, somewhere in between?

We move on. We have the chance to start new sentences and eventually write new chapters. It comes to a closure, somehow, but making a new beginning after that point would probably

be one of the hardest things to do even if it also only takes one word. We only need a word and sometimes even just a letter is enough to continue on. So we find that one thing that would make us write the next sentence. That one thing that’ll push us to continue flipping the pages and go through every chapter. One thing that we love hard and deeply enough to guide us through that somewhere in between where all seems lost. So we can find ourselves again in the after, where things seem to be a little better than the in between.

At the end of the day, a point that gets to be the end of something isn’t the only one there. We also get to use commas for continuations, exclamation points for all these intense feelings and emotions, the question marks for all the uncertainty and more. We use them all. We feel them all. Then maybe, somewhere in between isn’t so bad after all?

The Colossal Great White Sharks hailed Champions in the 2022 ERGmeet: The Dominance

A dominating blue team (The Colossal Great White Sharks) showed their fangs and bags a total of 67 points to bring home the victory in the recently held ERGmeet 2022: The Dominance, last January 19-22, 2022 via zoom meetings. The event is conducted with the aim of ensuring the well-being of resident members of the UP Engineering Radio Guild Los Baños and to build camaraderie and stronger connections between resident members and alumni of the organization.

Due to the still ongoing Pandemic on the country, the annual team building event is now on its 2nd year of being held in the online setup. The physical sports conducted in the face-to-face setup are replaced with Esports and some online games facilitated via zoom meetings. Four teams consisting of UP-ERG LB resident members participated in the 4-day event namely the Blue Team (The Colossal Great White Shark), Red Team (The Tenacious Leopard Seals), Green Team (The Amiable Orcas), and Yellow Team (The Electrifying Torpedo Fish). The event was then joined by the team of alumni during the last day to compete with the resident members.

The first day of the event kicked-off with the Farmer’s Games, a series of online games namely the Pasandok, Para po, and Follow through, all of which are facilitated in the zoom meeting. The teams were competitive enough to bring the first day matches to a close fight with the blue team garnering 13 points and ending up the lead winner, followed by the green team with 12 points, red team with 11 points, and lastly, the yellow team with 7 points.

For the 2nd day, representatives from each team competes for the Atlantean Olympics to display their skills in playing different esports namely Among Us, Mobile Legends, Valorant, and League of Legends. The blue

team continues to floor the other teams with a stunning 23-point finish, tanking a 3-3-1 win record in Mobile Legends, Valorant, and League of Legends respectively. The Green and Yellow team were tied in the 2nd place with 20 points, tailing a 2-0-3 and 1-2-1 win record respectively while the Red Team fell short in the last place with a 0-1-1 win record in the three above mentioned esports.

The thrill continues in the 3rd day as the team took on the Poseidon’s Challenge in which, they played Patingin Naman Please and Dugtungan in the zoom meeting. Much more fun and excitement has elated the event when each team showcased their creativity in the Poetry of the Squad Presentation and TIKTOK Challenge Presentation. The Red team made a huge comeback by winning the Patingin Naman Please, garnering a total of 30 points. The Blue team wins the Dugtungan game and is tied with Red Team in the first place while the green team with 27 points and yellow team with 25 points takes the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.

To conclude the event, the alumni of the organization competes with the resident members in the game of Decode facilitated in the zoom meeting. The competitiveness of the alumni made them emerge victorious against the resident members, inching by only 1 point to take the win.

An individual competition named Battle Royale is also held the same day and is dominated by Mr. AJ Balmeo with an outstanding 10-point win.

After the 4 days of thrill and fun games, the Blue Team (The Colossal Great White Shark) thrived and survived as the Champion for the 2022 ERGmeet: The Dominance. The Green and Red Team were tied in the 2nd Place with 60 points on the over-all ranking while The Yellow Team took the last spot with 51 points.
