Possibly the single most important link on this page for you is the “Add/Drop/Swap classes” link under Academic Planning & Registration (underlined in the screenshot). On the next few pages we’ll go over what you’ll find there.

path penn: Selecting Courses

The landing page for Add/Drop/Swap classes is shown below. This is where you will make all the changes to your class schedule for each semester.

If you had a gap in study or a status violation, the one academic year waiting period may need to be recalculated once the student has again obtained valid F-1 status.

how do i know which classes to look for?

When looking for classes, be sure to refer to your prorgam ’ s planned Program of Study (reach out to your program manager for this) which tells you all the requirements for completing the program.

On the next slide we’ll go over tricks for finding elective classes in other Penn schools, your primary vs. alternative carts, and other search options.

If you want to take classes in another school, you’ll want to use the Advanced Search option.

Eligibility Requirements

When you are building your schedule you can put classes in your Primary Cart or your Alternatives Cart. The Primary Cart is where you are building your ideal class schedule.

The Alternatives Cart is exactly what it sounds like –alternative classes in case one of your first choices is full.

path penn: Requesting Permission for Courses

what do you mean by requesting permission?

Sometimes the class you want is already full or has restrictions on who can enroll. When this is the case, you need to request permission, either to enroll in the course or to be added to the waitlist for a class.

Eligibility Requirements

To do this, you click “Request permission for this course ” when you are adding it to your cart, and a box will appear to type your request.

You must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one academic year before being eligible for CPT.

Some courses with registration restrictions may tell you to explain why you want to register for the course or give some explanation of how it fits into your educational goals. If you are simply asking to be added to the waitlist, that is usually all you need to put in the box.

**Waitlist requests must go through Path@Penn, not the instructor for the course! Do not email instructors asking to be added to a waitlist!

PROJECT management

Eligibility

Requirements

You must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one academic year before being eligible for CPT.

Have you ever heard of the phrase, “there is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time”? A weird phrase, yes, but it essentially means that any task, no matter how challenging, can be tackled bit by bit. With that projects can be overwhelming - and the deadlines can sneak up on you! Learning how to breakdown projects will become an essential skill in managing your time and tasks as a GSE student. Here are some tips for managing projects:

EXCEPTION: for graduate students whose programs require immediate participation in an internship, a practicum, or other employment.

breaking down a project:

It is available only while you are in valid F-1 status and before the completion of your program.

Students in English Language Programs (ELP) are not eligible for CPT.

STEPS: What are all the steps you need to take to complete the project? Check the rubric to ensure you understand all the pieces of the project and the due date, then work backwards to break it down into manageable pieces.

If you had a gap in study or a status violation, the one academic year waiting period may need to be recalculated once the student has again obtained valid F-1 status.

RESOURCES: Think of the resources you will need to complete each step. Do you need to meet with your professor? Read and review articles? Meet with team members? Write it all down.

SET TIME ASIDE: Set aside dedicated time to work on each of the steps. Write down when you will work on each step and block off time on your calendar.

other tips:

Time yourself! We often underestimate how long it takes to complete tasks. Time how long it takes you to complete a step or task, that way you can plan realistically (and not procrastinate!)

Learn how YOU learn! Start to notice how you learn best. In a quiet room? Re-writing class notes? Drawing concepts?

Learning through teaching? Notice and adapt your process to work for you!

You must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one academic year before being eligible for CPT.

Okay,afterIhavemy person,Ithenask myself aseriesof questions:

The questions you should answer honestly… What the questions are trying to identify...

If you had a gap in study or a status violation, the one academic year waiting period may need to be recalculated once the student has again obtained valid F-1 status.the ugly letter

1. What do you think you are going to do? Argument

2. Why can't you do it?  Potential blocks

3. What have other smart people written? Relevant literature

4. What do you think about that? Feelings, thoughts or concerns? Analysis, potential gaps

5. How do you know what you know? Evidence? Findings

6. How will what you know help others? If it remains unknown, what are the consequences? Implications, contributions

I try to answer all of these questions and rarely answer them in order. I write according to whatever mood my brain is in because trying to fight against her often ends in my defeat and endless guilt So, sometimes I'm free flowing all over the place. Other times, I treat the questions like prompts in a diary. Try both ways or some combination to figure out which style works for you.

Oh! I never finish ugly drafting in one sitting and it can take about three to five days. I try not to draft for longer than that because I end up procrastinating or editing. You don't need to write beautiful sentences or spell correctly! Remember, this is just the very first ugly draft of your vague ideas, feelings, and random thoughts on a topic.

Eligibility Requirements

You must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one academic year before being eligible for CPT.

So, how ugly are these ugly drafts exactly? I have attached a QR Code with an extremely condensed example of an ugly draft that was written for a chapter of my dissertation (lol). Don't judge! Of course, this is not the true ugly UGLY draft I need to keep my dignity intact after all. Moreover, the real draft was 15 single-spaced pages.

Students in English Language Programs (ELP) are not eligible for CPT.

Context: When I started thinking about writing my dissertation, I thought it would be about the political development of Southeast Asian American (SEAA) high school students in a co-ethnic community-based educational space (CBES). Well, it is that…and then some other things many other things. Normal for a dissertation, really. But I initially just could not figure out how to begin that story and that meant that I could not begin writing. Starting is friggin' hard and scary!

If you had a gap in study or a status violation, the one academic year waiting period may need to be recalculated once the student has again obtained valid F-1 status.

Note on process: I wrote the ugly draft letter first. Then, I highlighted sections that address each of the guiding questions. At this stage, I also like to write notes to myself related to literature/relevant scholars or things I need to remember to do later. I do not engage in literature at the start because it interrupts my writing flow

apa style

Eligibility Requirements

You must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one academic year before being eligible for CPT.

EXCEPTION: for graduate students whose programs require immediate participation in an internship, a practicum, or other employment.

APA Style is a widely adopted format for writing and citing research papers in the social and behavioral sciences. It provides a standardized framework that ensures clarity of communication, consistency in presentation, and proper attribution of sources. The key components of APA Style include in-text citations, which give brief details about the sources within the body of the paper, and a reference list at the end, which provides full details of all sources cited. This style also emphasizes specific guidelines for formatting, including font, margins, and headings, to create a uniform and professional appearance. APA Style is the standard used at Penn GSE for all academic writing.

It is available only while you are in valid F-1 status and before the completion of your program.

Tips for APA Style:

Students in English Language Programs (ELP) are not eligible for CPT.

Consistent Formatting: Use 12-pt Times New Roman font, double-space your text, and set 1-inch margins on all sides to maintain a professional look.

If you had a gap in study or a status violation, the one academic year waiting period may need to be recalculated once the student has again obtained valid F-1 status.

In-Text Citations: Always include the author's last name and the year of publication when citing sources within your text. For direct quotes, add the page number as well. (Author, Year) or (Author, Year, p.#)

Reference List: Alphabetize your references by the surname of the first author, and use a hanging indent for each entry to ensure clarity and easy readability.
