Message from our

DIRECTOR & PASTOR

Dear Newman friends & family, What a unique time we are living in! These past several months have been challenging for students, as I am sure they have been for you as well. We truly believe that the Lord is with us in the midst of trials. So rather than running from them, we remain present -- ministering to students both near and far.

LIFE AT NEWMAN

Newman continues to be a “home away from home,” offering many the chance to stay connected and grow in their faith in particularly difficult moments. We actually believe that the pandemic can be a sort of “Pentecost moment” for the Church, in which the Holy Spirit fills us and compels us to be a "Church that goes out," as Pope Francis has constantly called us to do. We are going out to the peripheries, finding creative ways to do outreach for incoming students at Penn & Drexel. We have begun new initiatives, like our FOCUS Varsity outreach to student athletes, as well as our ESTEEM program which prepares students in their senior year for life after college. We also are fostering spaces of dialogue for students and looking for ways to approach and discuss the ongoing racial and social tensions in our country.

NEWman online Virtual Newman Nights

Virtual Bible Studies & Small Groups

Virtual NOVUS Freshman Retreat

Each Tuesday and Thursday we have our Newman Nights online through Zoom! Online watch-parties include home-made skits and talks, and games through online gaming platforms.

Online Small Groups have become an emphasis as they give the students a chance to express and discuss their faith as well as stay connected with a more intimate group of friends who can accompany and challenge each other.

We moved our NOVUS Retreat online for smaller, shortened afternoon sessions before online classes started. It was a great opportunity to give a space to the freshmen to get to know the ministry.

Virtual Fall Outreach

Virtual Lock-In

Welcome Week included a virtual tour of the church and Newman Center, an online discussion panel of upperclassmen, an online Movie Night, discussions, and personal virtual outreach to individuals and small groups of students.

One of our largest events of the year moved online as we had a three-part competition of a virtual Scavenger Hunt, Quizo, and Riddle challenge. The winners received gift card prizes and the 2nd place team won free Newman Swag.

Spiritual Talks

Every Sunday, Fr. Remi records and shares his Sunday Gospel reflection on YouTube, providing students and parishioners with some spiritual guidance for the rest of the week.

Messages From Our Ministry Team We, too, like all of you, miss everyone – for you all give life to our Newman ministry. Despite all these challenges, our good Father, in his loving kindness and mercy, has made our distant locations closer through the celebration of our faith virtually.

Nelson villamor

Campus Minister, Penn Newman

We are so grateful that we can continue to find ways to encounter God and our community through our online bible studies, prayer groups, and even casual hangouts via Zoom or Houseparty. As we continue to face the challenges of the present times, know that we are all together in this and that we can always find ways to keep our friendships connected. Know that we are always here for you.

It was a big decision to move on from FOCUS after six years as a missionary, but it is such a blessing to continue working at my favorite place, with my favorite people! My new role as Campus Minister and Formation Coordinator allows me to have a deeper relationship with everyone in this community -- I can continue working with Drexel Newman like I did as a missionary, jump in as part of the ministry with Penn Newman, and get to know lots of other parishioners and students through RCIA and formation. This is such a special parish, and it's a privilege to continue serving here in a more permanent role.

Jule Coppa

Campus Minister, Formation Coordinator It has been quite an experience being pulled into the whirlpool of confusion and surprises that this last year has brought about. After having just finished the best outreach season we have seen at Drexel, the excitement seemed to come to an abrupt halt. I think this is a very interesting lesson on how much we need one another.

We forget how crucial it is to have a community to influence and encourage us not only to do what we need to do, but also to become who God is calling us to be. I have learned that this isn’t a moment to focus on doing, this is a moment to focus on being. It is a moment for being there for others and being open to be loved ourselves.

TOGETHER, APART I am grateful for the priests, brothers, and the focus missionaries for being a constant support during these times. They have helped me to not just grow in my faith but to become a better person overall. Their guidance and love has been a blessing in my life." Therese Matthew, Drexel '21

"Newman's virtual programming has allowed me to stay connected even though i'm not on campus. i've been able to meet with the service committee and my bible study, which has helped me maintain my faith life." Courtney Butterworth, Penn '21

"I've found that the relationships I have here are still thriving - people tend to be more intentional now that we don't simply bump into each other. It's more refreshing to talk to someone you haven't seen since March, or to hop on a Zoom call that you actually want to be on." Finian Connors, Penn '22

“I was really nervous about leaving because my Newman family had been such an integral part of my support system. I didn't need to worry at all because I see and chat with all of them over Zoom calls. Once I hear their voices, we don't stop talking for hours. Being able to connect with my friends from afar while having the space to grow as an individual has somehow brought us closer together.” Gabrielle Utomo, Penn '21

"Drexel Newman continues to be a source of comfort in my life. It goes to show that it wasn’t the events or the food or the buildings that made this community but the people. We're stronger than ever during this time of crisis." Jude Mathew, Drexel '22

ON FAITH

The lasting impact of focus missionaries It's been three years since our FOCUS missionary teams joined our campus ministry efforts! Since then, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of students who participate in our small groups and Bible studies -- two core elements of our ministry. Together with the Sodalit brothers, the missionaries work with student leaders to reach out to their peers and invite them to discover the joy of community in Christian life.

Now more than ever, their role has been vital in offering spaces of encounter for students seeking friendship and encouragement. Our FOCUS missionaries have played an integral role in our virtual ministry and we are so grateful to have them on our team.

everything in focus 2020 Penn Newman Grad Joins The Mission I realized, through the FOCUS missionaries, that by offering up my time to God, I can still pursue the dreams I had of being a better student, a better photographer, and a better friend to my peers. Striving for holiness unlocked my potential to truly understand myself, to have the fortitude to tackle the challenges before me, and to sacrifice unconditionally for my friends and family. And so, with confidence, I applied to be a FOCUS missionary; it was the only job application I filled out as a senior. And now I serve at MIT, striving to share Christ with the students there just as Sarah, Mary, Jonathan, Joe, Angela, and Emily did for me.

FOCUS

team player varsity CAtholic, outreach TO AthleteS

With the support of a grant from the Ambassador’s Fund for Catholic Education, the Newman Center has started an exciting new program -Varsity Catholic. In an effort to serve student athletes, this program offers small group Bible studies, personal accompaniment and outreach events that are tailored for their lifestyle and seeks to help them discover how the Christian life can bring fulfillment to their lives as student athletes. As we broaden this new initiative, we're excited to welcome Molly Bent, a Penn FOCUS missionary who played Division I basketball during her undergrad career at the University of Connecticut. We chatted with Molly on her unique mission with Varsity Catholic and what we can all expect from this growing program.

What made you want to become a FOCUS missionary? I never would have imagined that this is where I’d be after graduating college, but God’s grace is so real! The FOCUS missionaries on UConn’s campus opened my mind and my heart to the radical joy and freedom that comes from living your life in and for Christ. By the end of my senior year, the opportunity to become a FOCUS missionary myself simply felt like another gift He was inviting me to receive. What is Varsity Catholic? Varsity Catholic (VC) is a division of FOCUS dedicated to serving college athletes by introducing them to the person of Jesus Christ and helping them grow in relationship with Him. The life of a college athlete is definitely unique, which is why it’s so important to have missionaries that can connect with athletes and share their own experience with living out their faith as an athlete in college. What does this unique outreach look like? Having bible studies specifically for athletes simply creates a space where they can open up about the unique gifts and crosses that they are encountering as student-athletes aspiring to grow in their relationship with God. More generally, VC outreach adds an intentional focus on mentoring athletes within their demanding schedules, teaching them how to glorify God in their sport and in their daily lives. What events do you have coming up? I’m working with Fr. Remi and a group of Penn athletes to put together a monthly speaking series called “The Good Fight: The Spiritual Benefits of Sports.” Our hope is that we can create a space where student athletes can reflect on how habits developed through sport can, and should be applied to their spiritual life. We’ve invited some pretty awesome current and former athletes to come speak. We also have small-group bible studies for athletes starting up!

Hope

charity & The universal church

a reflection by fr. remi morales, scv

Our Father’s providence brought me to Philadelphia in May 2017, as a Sodalit brother. In this parish my life changed. To be more precise my “self” changed ontologically, existentially, and supernaturally. In 2019, Archbishop Chaput ordained me as a priest at St. Agatha-St. James Parish and welcomed me to the priesthood. The church was crowded, and boiling in the August heat, but filled with the warmth and affection of my family, friends, students, and parishioners. As a new priest, I’ve realized three aspects of the faith that are evident in our Parish and Newman Center: 1) the feeling of hope, 2) the universality of the Church, 3) and the call to charity for those who suffer. Hope abounds within our community here. Hope is desire with the expectation of receiving. These students are ambitious and driven. But that kind of hope still needs to be transfigured from the natural to the spiritual, so that it can acquire the full taste of the theological virtue.

You can feel the history and richness of the Catholic Church, so varied in expressions, feelings, and languages of piety and service. I felt especially compelled to start a small group with my Latino people. It’s currently growing, serving students who are longing to reconnect with their spiritual identity, their roots, and their dignity. Third, the call to charity. We all need charity, and every good deed can be considered charity. But somehow in this Parish we can perceive the silent cry of the wounded Christ as asking for a special gesture of consolation and healing. I found this in two main areas: the history of racial distress experienced by some of our African American parishioners and the many hospital patients whose families are under great affliction. Accepting and bearing the pain together is such an essential path for human fullness. The cracks are old and run deep, they run within their souls. How much I beg God for the loving reverence that can inspire peace and hope in them. Here we are One Body, the daily Eucharist makes us One Body, and holds us together. And if our brothers and sisters can’t come to the Church, the Body will come to you, because we are One.

Fr.Remi with young adult parishioners on retreat at the St. John Paul II shrine

My own conversion happened when I was 19, during college, so it’s fascinating to relate with students on the same path. I’ve been walking this journey with several young people, as their spiritual director. I also lead a couple of small groups, one of them for Penn Football players and another for Young Adults & Grad students. I’m so proud when I watch students leave campus, continuing their search for authenticity and true friendship. Universality is the second element of the Mystical Body that moves me. How incredible it is to greet people from each continent every Sunday -- to see them pray, kneel, sing, smile with their own ways and gestures.

all the right notes St. Agatha - St. James Music Ministry Music is an integral part of liturgy. The verb "to sing" is mentioned 309 times in the Old Testament, and thirty six times in the New Testament. One of my favorite biblical references to singing comes from Psalm 21, Verse 13: "Rise up, O Lord, with all your power. With music and singing we will celebrate your mighty acts. Our job as pastoral musicians is to elevate the liturgy. Over the past six months, we've had to get creative in using virtual music to celebrate liturgy. St. Agatha-St. James produced its first virtual ensemble during the Triduum. It was an exciting way to celebrate the beauty that is the Triduum with our parishioners, and friends all over the world. Our Virtual Triduum Ensemble paved the way for events coming this fall!

We will be using social media to publish a wide variety of material. We'll start with a Virtual Ensemble for our Marian Procession in October. In November, Father Remi and I will present a talk on the music of JS Bach and his work as a Theologian. We will also participate in a Virtual Taize Service with the St. Raphaela Center in Haverford, PA. In December, we will publish a virtual arrangement of Silent Night to celebrate the season of Advent. This will be in place of our annual Carols by Candlelight tradition.

Stay tuned to our social media platforms for more information! If you would like to get involved with the music ministry email: Â sburman@saintsaj.org

We have invited our Penn and Drexel Newman campus partners, and community members to participate in this exciting project! Stay tuned to our social media platforms for more information! - Sean Burman, Music Director

A Call For Reconciliation RESPONDING TO OUR CALL

CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION

As people of faith we are called to consider our thoughts, goals, and actions through our shared beliefs and values. George Floyd’s death, and those of too many others, deepened the centuries-old wound of racism. During this time, I’ve wondered how I, as a child of God, am being asked to respond.

Here at the Newman Center, we have grieved together with our society, and especially with our Black brothers and sisters, who have suffered through the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the civil unrest that followed.

After May 25th, I struggled to understand what work I was supposed to focus on – as a person of color, as a community member, and as a human. This question was further complicated by mixed responses from Catholic clergy and laity alike; some, including the Penn Newman student community, were momentarily silent.

While not pretending to have the answers, and often feeling unqualified to speak on such matters, we have felt compelled by our faith to stand in solidarity with all those affected by racial injustice and discrimination. With the initiative of some student leaders from our Intercultural Ministry Team, and with guidance from the University of Pennsylvania’s Chaplain's Office, we have helped facilitate conversations with students on racial justice.

With our campus minister’s guidance, committee members from the Intercultural Ministry had several Zoom conversations to share reflections, emotions, and questions about recent events and related topics. We knew that our small discussions were only the first step. I believe that we are asked to do the difficult, tiring, and challenging – with Jesus, of course!

With our identities rooted in Christ, we have looked to Catholic Social Teaching to guide our reflections, while offering spaces for students to share freely their experiences. As the school year begins, we are committed to continuing the conversation and looking for ways to help our communities heal. Let us come together in prayer for our country and look for ways to help bring about unity and peace.

At Penn, I’ve had the privilege of meeting people from all over the world. Combined with my cultural background, these experiences have provided glimpses into the beauty of our Church as a universal Home. What a gift it is to use our creativity and abilities to welcome and care for others in diverse ways! I’m encouraged by Jesus’s words in Chapter 25 of Matthew: “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” May we love our God so much that we seek Him in every person and moment, especially when we are tempted to think that we cannot make a difference.

WEST PHILLY OUTREACH A New Newman Center Initiative

Since the quarantine began, we started reaching out to local parishioners here in West Philly. Brothers, missionaries, and students began making phone calls and distributing donated gift cards. It has been a great opportunity to discover the Church's call to take the "Good News" to the periphery, especially during these difficult times. We have continued this outreach initiative into the fall, as we are taking Communion on Sundays to those who are unable to come to Church.

A New Newman Center Program

Penn and Drexel students frequently give us the same feedback: transitioning from the vibrant community of young people at the Newman Center to the “real world” is challenging post-grad. It is not always clear what role young adults can play in the Church today. The anonymity of big cities can also be overwhelming without a support system of fellow young adults pursuing a Christian life. These are a few of the reasons we chose to begin ESTEEM, a new program that helps college seniors find their place and mission in the Church after graduation. Founded in 2010 by the Leadership Roundtable, a Catholic lay organization, the ESTEEM program consists of monthly formation meetings given by lay leaders on a variety of topics like Christian leadership models and Catholic social teaching.

We’ve already received a positive response with twentytwo Penn and Drexel students getting involved! Last year, we took our students to Chicago to attend ESTEEM program's annual Capstone Conference to talk about how to transition out of the campus ministry experience as Catholic Christians in society This year, the Newman Center was awarded a grant by the Ambassador’s Fund for Catholic Education here in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Our hope is to partner with other local Newman Centers so we can continue developing and growing this promising program.

ALUMNI

where are they now?

Once a Newmanite, always a Newmanite! Our thriving alumni community holds a special place in our hearts. Their success in life is our success! Here are a couple Newman success stories we're excited to share with you.

Sarah Cahill 2015

2020

Sarah Cahill is a recent 2020 Drexel Newman alum! She is a missionary at Christ in the City in Denver, CO. and was first introduced to the mission on a spring break trip with Drexel Newman. The trip and her involvement with the Newman Center allowed her to receive Jesus' invitation to give a year after college to serve the poor at Christ in the City. Sarah: "The Newman Center gave me authentic friendships and allowed me to grow in and love my faith. Through getting involved with the Newman Center I was formed not only in how to live out the Gospel in my own life, but also how to invite others into our mission as Christians. "

Marya & Alberto Amaral 2015

2020

Marya and Alberto Amaral met as Penn undergrads at the Newman Center! They got married at St. Agatha St. James and continue to be active parishioners. From being members of the parish finance council to helping with Pre-Cana, both Marya and Alberto call the Newman Center and St. AJ's "home." Alberto is currently a 2nd year MBA student at Wharton and Marya works as a nurse in critical care.

Marya: "Newman gave me opportunities to grow in my faith in a way that helps me better care for my patients by serving them in the best way that I can. It also provided me with a deeper connection to the Catholic faith that I can rely on when work is difficult or patient situations are upsetting." Alberto: "Being a part of Newman helped me grow in my faith and better understand what my vocation was as a student and then as a professional. It impacted my career by helping me understand what my underlying professional duty is -- to serve God through work well-done."

the finish line of redevelopment We will have much to be thankful for at Thanksgiving this year! We started the negotiations for the redevelopment of the Newman Center in Jan. 2015 and building started in Sep. 2018. Six years later, we are finishing! Covid has delayed our finish date to the end of Oct. The total spent was $7.81M. Lower level of the Church $3.69M; Newman Center $2.53; Repointing the Church $1.24M; Park $0.35M. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia gave the majority of the funds from the sale of the old Newman Center and we fundraised $465K, which was a record for us!

Fr. Carlos Keen, SCV

This has taken a huge amount of my time especially in these last years. I am so happy and relieved that we are finishing! I am very proud of what has been accomplished and I want to acknowledge many of you who donated to our redevelopment. You have been crucial partners in this important, good work. May God bless you all!

Newman Stewardship Campaign We first want to say THANK YOU! Thanks to so many of you, last year’s fundraising totals increased and helped us meet our budget’s needs. As we begin a new school year, our community and ministry team continues to adapt to the challenges presented by COVID-19. With these challenges have also come new financial demands. Several of our sources of income such as rentals, the offertory, and our endowment have already been impacted due to the pandemic. To meet these demands and to ensure the financial stability of both the Newman Center and Parish, we are introducing a special “Newman Stewardship Campaign.” This campaign is an opportunity to give back to our community, which is a “home away from home” for so many students, alumni, and parishioners. We want to continue providing resources and support so we can serve our community now and for many more years to come. During these uncertain times, your support is needed more than ever. We ask you, our faithful community of parishioners, alumni, parents, and friends, to prayerfully consider supporting this campaign so we can maintain and sustain our ministry. Thank you in advance for your generous support, and please be assured of our continued prayers for you and your loved ones!

"Newman virtual events have offered me a safe space to calm my mind and give my grievances up to God. Although I haven't been able to physically see my friends, Zoom has allowed me to keep in touch. Many things have changed but I'm grateful that I can rely on my close friends as well as the Newman community for hope and to remind myself to place my trust in God and His plan for all of us." - Lindsey Fogarasi, Class of 2024
