Spring 2019

The Newman Center at st. Agatha - st. james Heart Speaks To Heart

What an exciting time for the Drexel Newman ministry! Our new FOCUS missionaries have brought a big spark to our ministry outreach, and we have already doubled the number of students in small groups in just their first year on campus. We are also undergoing a beautiful redevelopment of our Newman Center that we share with our sister Penn ministry, who is celebrating their 125th Anniversary this year. Together with them, we'd ask you to "save-the-date" to come celebrate the 125th Anniversary Newman Celebration this October 4-6th, where we will also inaugurate our new Newman Center. I also have to mention that Drexel Newman's 100th Anniversary is just around the corner in 2021! Three of our members and one Drexel professor are going through the RCIA program to be received into the Church or to be Confirmed. And the most rewarding thing to me is the simple fact that students are growing deeper and deeper in their relationship with Jesus. All of this joy is magnified by the excitement of what lies ahead. With the opening of the new building, there is a general sense, and a hopeful certitude, that next year will mark one of the most important years in the history of Drexel Newman, which will be inaugurated by our first early-move-in Freshman Retreat where we expect at least 30 freshmen to attend. The Lord continues to bless Drexel Newman and we want to thank all of you for supporting us and being a part of such a beautiful family.

FROM THE 2019 STUDENT PRESIDENT

As a fallen away Catholic in my early college years, it has been a

true blessing to have found a community that has helped me to rediscover my faith in ways unimaginable. I have been blessed with many genuine friendships and a community that loves me for my own talents, skills, and personality. I would never have imagined that the community I was looking for since my start at Drexel was at the local Catholic Church on Chestnut Street the entire time. Once becoming involved I learned much more about what it means to have a real relationship with Christ. Although challenging to discover God at times, I think with the support of the people in the Drexel Newman Catholic Community and the friendships I now have, I have no fear that my life will be anything less than an exciting, faith-filled journey. We strive to create a true Christian brotherhood and sisterhood among each other and in our Lord. I am truly grateful to be a member of such a caring, loving, and faith-filled community at Drexel University. With the major redevelopment occurring at the Newman Center on 38th Street and with the 100th year anniversary of our founding quickly approaching, I am very excited to see what the future holds and what God has in store for the Drexel Newman Catholic Community going into the new roaring twenties! St. Katherine Drexel and Blessed John Henry Newman, pray for us!

A FAITH THAT ENDURES LOOKING FORWARD

Our mission is just as important now, if not more, than it was at our founding in 1921. Only 30% of those who were raised Catholic are still practicing and only 1 in 4 millennial Catholics attend weekly Mass. In addition, 64% of millennial Catholics seldom or never participate in prayer, scripture study, or religious education.

Naming gift opportunity: interior wall murals, furniture for student lounges, and naming rights to our banquet hall and conference and study rooms

But there is reason to hope! We cannot help but be excited as we look to the future, for we are certain that through the blessings of our past and present, we will continue to share God’s love with Philadelphia!

We invite you to participate in this exciting new chapter for our ministry, whether it’s becoming directly involved in our new Newman Center redevelopment, supporting our programs, or reacquainting yourself with the faith by participating in our upcoming Newman Celebration.

We truly cannot thank you enough for your support, and we look forward to sharing with you how it is impacting our bright future.

All of this is to say that we could not do this without you. Your contributions are pivotal in allowing us to put more feet on the ground, keep the lights on, and provide for other necessities that are required to keep our mission running! I invite you in a special way this year to consider giving even more as our momentum accelerates. Your gifts not only directly impact our students, but they restore hope in their parents, reverberate throughout our community in University City, inspire our parishioners at St. Agatha-St. James, and of course, it gives great joy to Jesus in seeing that His Church is not only so loved but growing!
