t’s been 11 years since Dr. Faisal Khan launched Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. Back in 2012, it was just Dr. Khan and two employees. Today, this dynamic pediatric dental office has 23 members on staff and serves a population of thousands of little patients across Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Fulshear, and Katy. “Dr. Khan loves kids, and kids love Dr. Khan!” says Dr. Khan’s wife, Samiha. “Kids are my whole life,” continues Dr. Khan. “They’re so much fun. Every patient is different…children keep things exciting and fast-paced. My own kids, Zayna, Hamza, and Eisa, visit the office all the time. They love talking to the employees, and they help out by making goody bags and shredding papers. My life outside the office is hanging with the three of them. We are Marvel junkies!” Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik, Dr. Annie Zheng, Dr. Khadija Khan, an oral surgeon, and an anesthesiologist join Dr. Khan at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental to provide all aspects of pediatric dentistry, special needs dentistry, and minor orthodontics. Dr. Khan is also an on-staff physician at Texas Children’s Hospital and West Houston Medical Center. This team’s list of achievements is long and distinguished. Dr. Khan pursued a fellowship at Albert Einstein Medical School in Special Care Dentistry, where he obtained extensive training in working with children with various complicated medical and physical disabilities. He is a published author in the Journal of American Dental Association and the Texas Dental Association journal. Dr. Ritwik is currently a full-time Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at UT Houston School of Dentistry. Dr. Zheng graduated from UT Health School of Dentistry as a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. After graduating from Yale University, Dr. Khadija went on to serve as co-chief resident at Stony Brook University in New York where she received specialty training and completed her residency in pediatric dentistry. The Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental team can be spotted all over our community sponsoring events and giving tooth fairy presentations and talks to schools and daycares. The focus is clear: to create a comfortable and welcoming dental environment that helps children relax. And the entire staff loves being a part of Dr. Khan’s vision. Many call Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental the best place they’ve ever worked. “Everyone here is so hard working.” says one team member. “We really care for our patients!”

early every day, friends Tahir Bhatti, local physician Dr. Asaf Riyaz Qadeer, and Shaukat Maredia gather at local Aga’s Restaurant for delicious food and conversation. “We’ve known each other since 2011,” says Tahir. “We are blessed. It’s a special relationship.” Aga’s Restaurant is owned by Shaukat’s family, but it’s often his friends that speak for him. Tahir is the CEO of Focus Merchant Services. Over the last 12 years, he’s referred

my daughter-in-law’s family from California arrived in town for the wedding, I arranged to have Aga’s brought to the hotel for them. To my surprise, they had already made reservations to visit Aga’s during their stay here! Houston is a ‘taste city,’ and Aga’s is the leader in Indo-Pak food. People visit Aga’s from all over the country. It’s that well known.” Favorite dishes among these friends include Chicken Chaska Boti (a BBQ/grilled chicken), Nihari (a traditional Pakistani stew

more than 500 catering jobs to Aga’s, including visits from global ambassadors. “It’s blind faith,” says Tahir. “I don’t even have to ask. I know Shaukat will take care of everyone I send his way.” These catering jobs include the weddings of Tahir and Dr. Qadeer’s children. Dr. Qadeer’s son got married last month. “My daughter-in-law made all the arrangements,” explains Dr. Qadeer, ”except the food. I just asked Shaukat to take care of it. I didn’t even pick a menu. Food is huge in my life, and this cuisine is the best. A funny story: When

made with chicken or beef ), and Hunzai Karahi. Dr. Qadeer says, “The Hunzai Karahi is made by a chef from a town in Pakistan with the same name. It’s a goat curry made with butter and not oil…just like food is cooked in that part of Pakistan. You can’t get it anywhere else.” Aga’s Restaurant moves more food through UberEats than every other area restaurant combined. This is a well-oiled machine, and people value this brand. It’s the best IndoPak cuisine anywhere, served consistently and quickly. The restaurant seats 700+, and

every table receives their food within 15-20 minutes without compromising quality. Shaukat also believes in affordability. For this reason, even through its wild success, the Aga’s prices have remained the same. Events of any size are catered in the two beautiful Aga’s banquet halls. Party trays and full-service, onsite catering are also available. The #1 Indian and Pakistani restaurant in the country is open seven days a week, 365 days a year. We recommend you see for yourself what everyone’s talking about!

Cheers To 20 Years! Japaneiro’s

by Amy Sharp

D

id you know Japaneiro’s owners Victor Litwinenko and Robert White first owned Sasu, a tiny sushi bar once located in New Territory? “Sasu is where these brother-in-laws got their start,” explains Japaniero’s General Manager Danielle Crane. “The feedback they received from guests way back then was that wives were eating at Sasu without their husbands–or

vice versa–because one did not like sushi. As the restaurant grew, and they searched for a bigger location, the pair brainstormed a new concept. Robert and Victor both grew up in Venezuela. The new place would be Asian and South American fusion, breaking barriers and bringing two vastly different worldly cuisines together. The restaurant name, Japaneiro’s, is a reflection of this fusion. ‘Japan’ plus ‘iero’...the

last two syllables of ‘Rio de Janeiro.’” This year, Japaneiro’s celebrates 20 years in Sugar Land’s Town Square!

Japaneiro’s is a favorite among guests and employees alike. Experienced Chef Victor Luna has been a member of the Japaneiro’s team for more than 10 years. Two sushi chefs have worked at the sushi bar since the beginning. One of the bussers has bussed Japaneiro’s tables for about 18 years. Through the holidays, Japaneiro’s will be hosting its annual Toy Box Drive. Bring in a toy, and you’ll receive a free appetizer or tempurafried oreo dessert. When you visit Japaneiro’s in November, don’t be surprised when all of the guys look a little scruffy. Danielle says, “We always participate in No-Shave November. For every employee that doesn’t shave for the entire month, we make a donation to local

GiGi’s Playhouse. We love giving back to our community.” Dine at Japaneiro’s, and you’ll discover traditional sushi options like Spicy Tuna rolls and Tiger rolls, traditional Latin dishes including churrascos and empanadas, and exciting fusion favorites. Danielle says, “I like

to recommend the Tropic Thunder roll. It’s Latin, and it’s sushi…shrimp tempura, spicy tuna and avocado wrapped in soybean paper and topped with sweet plantains. So fun! This is what I love about working for a momand-pop shop. We have the freedom to create around the brand. We are so excited to ring in the 20 years and celebrate with our guests!” Japaneiro’s 281-242-1121 2168 Texas Drive Sugar Land, Texas 77479 www.japaneiro.com

Authentic Korean Instruction in Taekwondo by Amy Sharp n ancient times, Koreans practiced Taekwondo as a mandatory preparation for war. With the passage of time, Taekwondo gradually became a folk sport. In 1971, Taekwondo was designated as Korea’s national sport. Here in Fort Bend County, it’s hard to come by Taekwondo schools with traditional Korean roots. Hanguk Taekwondo, under the direction of Black Belt Master Jin Youl Park, is the exception. Master Jin Youl Park began Taekwondo during his elementary years in Korea, and went on to learn from a grandmaster. Fifteen years ago, this black belt competitor moved to the West Coast of the United States. Then in 2020, Jin Youl landed in Missouri City with his wife and children, and the family launched Hanguk Taekwondo. “Taekwondo is about learning respect,” says Jin Youl. “It’s great for a child’s mind and body. It teaches leadership and confidence. Our younger students learn Taekwondo forms in fun ways. We keep the kids moving, running around and jumping over obstacles, to wear them out. I’m a parent too…I know that’s important! At the end of class, students that did well are awarded stickers. After a certain amount of stickers, the student can test for the next belt. It’s a rewarding system. My seven-year-old daughter is a High Green Belt, and my two-year old is just getting started. We have a lot of fun here!” With a schedule loaded with 22 classes each week plus private lessons available, Hanguk Taekwondo has the right class for you or your child. Students also have the opportunity to attend competitions with Hanguk Taekwondo. Jin Youl says, “We offer free trial classes. You or your child (ages 3+) can attend a regular class or two to see what to expect. If you’re interested, please stop by or give us a call. We’ll set up a trial lesson based on your age and your needs.” Discover authentic, Korean instruction in Taekwondo. Schedule your trial lesson at Hanguk Taekwondo today!

est friends Jennifer Park and Jessica Park (no relation!) met when both were working for a high-end sushi restaurant in Las Vegas. “We both LOVED the service industry,” says Jennifer. “And we knew this was the direction we wanted to go. Jessica moved to Fort Bend County first, and when my husband and I discovered what a fantastic area this was to raise children, we followed her.” These two friends combed the area looking for a place to open a Japanese restaurant with their own twist. “I grew up in California,” explains Jennifer. “But I believe Las Vegas provides the best quality food and service in the world. We wanted to mimic that, with a Hollywood twist. Jessica and I were able to take over this location from another owner and give it a new name. We then scouted two chefs to relocate here from Beverly Hills. The word ‘umami’ means ‘essence of deliciousness’ in Japanese. Its taste is often described as the meaty, savory deliciousness that deepens flavor. This is what we offer at Umami Japanese Restaurant. Richly flavored cuisine in an environment that’s casual enough to eat at every day, but so fine you’ll have a tough time finding something similar anywhere else in the suburbs.”

by Amy Sharp

Begin your dining adventure at Umami with the Crispy Rice: a deep fried rice with spicy tuna and special sauces. For the main course, consider an entree from the “Creations” menu. The

Wagyu Filet Mignon served with potato puree, a miso glaze sauce, and broccolini is a local favorite. In the mood for sushi? Try the best-selling Angry Dragon Roll. With shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, serrano peppers, bluefin tuna, eel sauce, black tobiko eggs, and special sauces, this roll is sure to tickle your taste buds. Umami is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week (closed 3pm-5pm). Reservations can be made by calling the restaurant. Party platters are also available, and the entire restaurant can be reserved for private parties. It’s Viva Las Vegas with a Hollywood twist. Check it out today! n Italy, food is more than a means of supplying the body with essential nutrients to stay healthy and grow. Food— amazingly fresh Italian food—is something to be proud of. And food is prominent in the celebration of every occasion in Italy, especially the holidays! Lucky for us, we don’t need a passport to partake in high-quality Italian food this holiday season. Corelli’s Italian Cafe has been cooking up the best, made-from-scratch Italian right here in Sugar Land for more than 27 years. Family and friends alike gather at Corelli’s for the fabulous entrees, including the mouth-watering lasagna. Corelli’s spaghetti is Papa Corelli’s own blend: spaghetti tossed with the restaurant’s fresh homemade sugo rosa sauce and joined by Corelli’s famous meatballs. Just the right touch of pasta and protein! For the carb-conscious, the Salmon Florentine is quite good. It’s grilled salmon served on a bed of spinach with artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes with a white wine lemon butter sauce. The pizza also has a faithful following. Try the Corelli’s Special. It comes loaded with everything but the 8 ~ UPCLOSE ~ November 2023

kitchen sink…Canadian bacon, pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, onion, bell pepper, mushroom and olives! Or you can build your own. When you’re ready for dessert, Corelli’s New York Style Cheesecake is a show stopper! Made in-house with Corelli’s very own recipe, we hear it’s a lengthy labor of love. Now that temperatures have cooled off, dining al fresco is perfect on the Corelli’s charming covered patio. Here, soft lighting and music meet Old World decor, complete with wisteria vines running up along the quaint archways. Very fit for a relaxed evening out. Planning a holiday party? The quaint Corelli’s wine room is the perfect setting for your soiree! It can accommodate up to 36 people (minimum of 10). Corelli’s will work with your budget to create an incredible experience for your private party guests. At Corelli’s, they love the holidays. It’s the best time of year! re you ready to “let the good times roll?” The only thing better than hanging out at Floyds would be chillin’ at your own bait shack...but if you go to Floyds, they’ll do all the work, while you watch the game! Floyd “Dawg” Landry grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana working for his uncle at Don’s Seafood and Steakhouse. He teamed up with Bret Floyd, whose dad #75, was on the gridiron for the Houston Oilers and Gary Pearce (a Sugar Land resident!) to bring Floyds Seafood to Sugar Land. General Manager Denise Lopez says, “We’ve got locations in Beaumont, Cypress, Mont Belvieu, Pearland, Sugar Land, and Webster (celebrating 20 years next year!). Each location has its own unique feel and regulars who’ve been coming since day one. We opened here in Sugar Land in 2012, and we love being a part of this community!” Nothing’s better than fresh seafood right out of the gulf, and Floyds gumbo and crab bisque make it sing! The oyster bar has its own oyster grill, where Floyds chefs can cook a variety of oyster options, fresh to order. Want some real fried catfish? Floyds only uses American farmraised...the real thing! Daily specials, a full bar, seven beers on draft (many crafts from Texas & Louisiana!) and seasonal menu features make Floyds a great coastal hangout, no matter how far away the ocean actually is! Floyd Landry pioneered bringing crawfish from Lafayette to Houston back in 1976 (Don’s Seafood came to Houston in the 1970s). When crawfish season rolls around again,

you’ll want to make sure you visit Floyds for the real-deal experience! Bring the party to Floyds or call them to cater your crawfish boil or family get-together. Floyds isn’t part of a corporate chain. It’s still the family-owned, home-grown good food and good times place born in Lafayette. Grab a poboy for lunch or a seafood dinner, and you’ll see how being Cajun to the core means Floyds delivers Lagniappe...a little bit extra! At-Home Care for Dry Mouth, HyperSensitivity, and Extra Protection

“ If you’re suffering from dry mouth, hypersensitivity, or require a toothpaste with prescription-strength fluoride for yourself or your child, these new offerings might be just for you!”

L

ocal dentist Dr. Thomas Lomonte, DDS is excited to offer new options in at-home dental care. If you’re suffering from dry mouth, hypersensitivity, or require a toothpaste with prescriptionstrength fluoride for yourself or your child, these new offerings might be just for you! Dr. Lomonte says, “According to a recently published review, more than 25% of adults likely suffer from dry mouth. Dry mouth patients need help maintaining a non-acidic oral environment all day long. Allday Dry Mouth products are designed to provide maximum dry mouth protection around the clock. The comprehensive treatment plan starts with the Allday 5000 prescription toothpaste. Then the Allday Dry Mouth Spray and Allday Dry Mouth Gel can be used multiple times a day, as needed.” Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is used to control early childhood decay, stop root decay, and desensitize hypersensitive teeth. Dr. Lomonte says, “Advantage Arrest provides the most innovative technology in SDF therapy on the market. This product hardens softened dentin (the tooth’s second layer under the enamel), making it more acid and abrasion resistant. It’s tinted blue for easy, site-specific application. If you suffer from hypersensitivity, Advantage Arrest provides immediate relief.”

Have you ever tried prescription toothpaste? If you have, you probably didn’t use it for long…they generally don’t taste very good. Dr. Lomonte says, “FluoriMax 5000 is a prescription toothpaste you’ll actually use at home. It provides greater fluoride uptake, making it a perfect option for those that need extra care between dental appointments. For at-risk kids who need a little extra out of their toothpaste, I recommend Just Right 5000. It gives the prescription-strength fluoride they need without compromising on taste or fun!” Dr. Lomonte always welcomes new patients. A TOUCHING EVENING FILLED WITH ENTERTAINMENT AND EXCITEMENT by Amy Sharp

T

he first annual Red & Blue United – A Sugar Land First Responders Tribute, hosted by The Finest and Bravest Foundation of Sugar Land, took place on Sunday, October 15th. Prior to the event, co-chair Debbie Marcell promised us all that it would be a “boot-scootin good time.” It was! The evening kicked off with a fabulous dinner for VIP guests, followed by a short program, and it ended with country music sensation Aaron Watson…raising $475,000 for Sugar Land’s first responders. Co-chair Scott West says, “Most of us take our first responders for granted. We know they’ll be here for us when we need them. Red & Blue United is all about showing appreciation and honoring and respecting our Sugar Land Fire, Police, and EMS departments.” The funds raised will go toward purchasing life-saving equipment, funding educational opportunities, and meeting the emergency needs of first responder families with a Compassion Fund when other resources are not available. “A big shout out to Smart Financial Centre,” says co-chair KK West. “They hit every curve ball thrown their way–and truly partnered with us– making Red & Blue United a huge success.” “If you didn’t join us this year, you missed out,” adds co-chair Marvin Marcell. “The evening was both touching and filled with entertainment and excitement. We’ll be doing it again and again for many years to come. We’ll see y’all next year!” 12 ~ UPCLOSE ~ November 2023

Srishti Mehta, owner of local Indigo Orthodontics, moved to Fort Bend County when her husband, Dr. Shubham Pant, accepted a position as a professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center. “It’s the best thing that could have happened to our family,” says Dr. Mehta. “Our girls, Anya and Shreya, are thriving. I love the weather and the diversity. The people here are warm and welcoming. True southern hospitality.” As an accomplished orthodontist, Dr. Mehta has been creating happy, confident smiles since 2007. Her practice is a Living Magazine “Best Orthodontist in Fort Bend County” award winner. “We change how people feel about themselves,” explains Dr. Mehta. “Orthodontic treatment is about more than just braces or straight teeth. It can change a person’s self-confidence and behavior. I recommend that children receive their first orthodontic consultation by or before age seven. Please know that not every kid needs treatment. Children that don’t require treatment are monitored through our followup recall program. Your child returns for a follow-up evaluation free of charge, providing the best opportunity to intervene at the right time. That’s how much I value early intervention. However, also know that it’s never too late! Orthodontic treatment is a viable option for almost any adult as well, and we have great options that are nearly invisible, including ceramic braces, Invisalign, and InBrace (braces on the inside).” Under the leadership of Dr. Mehta, the Indigo Orthodontics team is always seeking continuing education…knowledge they can bring back to patients to improve both their health and their smiles. Languages spoken include English, Spanish, and Hindi. Indigo Orthodontics is an all-digital practice (no impressions). It is in network with several insurances and offers an in-office payment plan with no credit checks, no interest, and no fees involved. “Thank you for trusting us with your smile, your most valuable asset,” says Dr. Mehta. “I’m very blessed to live and practice in this community that my family calls home!”

ow in its 10th year, Heights Dermatology–Rosenberg continues to offer state-of-the-art medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology with excellent care and an outstanding bedside manner. This is not a rural area practice. Heights Dermatology–Rosenberg is a satellite location of the highly-esteemed Houston-area Heights Dermatology & Aesthetic Center. This office is under the direction of board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Alpesh Desai. Striving to provide the newest in technology when warranted, Heights Dermatology–Rosenberg offers blue light therapy for cancer, laser therapy for psoriasis, vitiligo, and eczema, biopsies, cryotherapy, intralesional injections, and incision and drainage. It’s the first dermatology group to offer superficial radiation–a non-surgical method for removing skin cancer–in this community. “Skin cancer, acne, hair loss, hyperpigmentation, and nail fungus are some of the more common dermatologic conditions we treat,” explains boardcertified Physician Assistant, Vy Ngo.

Cosmetic dermatology offerings at Heights Dermatology– Rosenberg include intense pulsed light (IPL), laser hair removal, neurotoxins, dermal fillers, chemical peels, and microneedling. “I’m very into patient education,” continues Vy. “I became a P.A. because there’s so much I can do to help people. Here at Heights Dermatology–Rosenberg, our team is committed to caring for our community beyond the walls of the office. We are eager to share our knowledge and experience to keep our patients healthy and confident.” Vy was born and raised in Vietnam. She speaks Vietnamese fluently. “Fort Bend is my home now,” says Vy. “I love exploring new restaurants with my husband and hiking with my three dogs.” Vy reminds everyone to wear sunscreen that’s SPF 40+ while out in the Texas sun, even in November. “Schedule a skin check at least once a year as well. It is never too early to have your skin exam…especially if you have a family history of skin cancer. From our family here at Heights Dermatology–Rosenberg to yours, we wish you well this upcoming holiday season!”

Are You A Sole Proprietor or S-Corp With An Excessive Business Loss?

“T

his might be the perfect opportunity to convert money you have in an IRA to a Roth IRA,” says Andy Sharp, President and CEO of local Altere Financial, LLC. “Why? Because you’ll pay less taxes on that money, and after the conversion, you’ll never pay taxes on that money again.” How? The current tax code allows those that are married filing jointly to deduct $540,000 in losses against 80% of their taxable income. For those filing single, the number is $270,000. “The key here,” explains Andy, “is that the type of income does not matter. If you’re passing your business income and expenses through your 1040 (as a sole proprietor or S-Corp), you could deduct business losses against all income, not just what your business brought in. A withdrawal from your IRA is taxed as ordinary income. Look at it this way. Let’s say your business lost $200,000. You then withdraw $150,000 from an IRA (that’s income). The $200,000 business loss is deducted from the IRA withdrawal, and you’re only taxed at the 80%...far less than you would have been taxed without the business loss. Then, convert the IRA money to a Roth IRA, and that money grows tax free for the rest of your life!” Andy has worked as a broker, financial planner, research Altere Financial, LLC analyst, product specialist, and financial consultant for a large Andrew Sharp, CFP®, CIMA® financial services firm. His goal at Altere Financial, LLC is 713-899-6589 to provide his clients with the big picture. Andy says, “You andrew.sharp@lpl.com should understand all of the options out there when it comes to www.alterefinancial.com managing your money both now and down the road. No one wants to endure an excessive business loss. But if you do, consider taking advantage of the possible opportunity to not only reduce the taxes you pay on the money you’ve saved for your golden years, but also continue to grow it tax free.” Questions? Give Andy a call. He’s always happy to help!

Securities and advisory services offered through LPL Financial, a Registered Investment Advisor, Member FINRA/SIPC. LPL Financial and Altere Financial, LLC do not provide tax advice or services. Traditional IRA account owners have considerations to make before performing a Roth IRA conversion. These primarily include income tax consequences on the converted amount in the year of conversion, withdrawal limitations from a Roth IRA, and income limitations for future contributions to a Roth IRA. In addition, if you are required to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) in the year you convert, you must do so before converting to a Roth IRA.

One team One focus A Compounding Pharmacy YOU vs A Standard Pharmacy

What’s The Difference? by Amy Sharp

B

oth types of pharmacies prepare medications prescribed for a patient by a doctor. The main difference is that a regular pharmacy provides commercial medications in standardized dosages and forms, while a compounding pharmacy can customize medication based on a patient’s specific needs. Dr. Lance Campbell, Pharm.D., R.Ph, founder of local Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy, says, “The modern compounding pharmacy has its roots in the 19th century, when doctors would both prescribe a medication, and then make it for their patients. As time went on, the practice of medicine and pharmacy separated. Today, drugs are manufactured on a mass scale. While these commercial medications work for most, some patients need the individual customization of a compounding pharmacy.” “For example,” continues Dr. Campbell, “because of allergies or intolerances, you might want your medication to come in a different form or be made with different ingredients. An oral medication that irritates your digestive system could be made as a powder or cream that delivers relief without unwanted side effects. If you’re sensitive to a specific ingredient (like gluten), your medication can be made without the unwanted ingredient. The possibilities are endless. We can also create specialty drugs for children and pets…who are typically finicky when it comes to taking their medications. Think your child would like a flavored medication? I bet they would! All medications we make are made in the exact dosage required, customized to your age, weight, medical condition, and sensitivity to side effects.”

The team at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy includes Dr. Omar Alkazzaz, Dr. Danny Thai, and Dr. Lisa Mathew. Dr. Campbell says, “Our goal is for you to have a more positive experience with your medication. If the medication you require is not available, doesn’t work for your needs, or has challenging side effects, we can help you find a solution. Stop by anytime to learn more!” Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy “If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!” Sugar Land • 281-980-2555 4760 Sweetwater Blvd. Suite 103 Houston • 713-668-4833 6603 Kirby Dr., Houston, TX 77005 www.campbellscompounding.com

ommy Thompson is the senior inspector for the City of Sugar Land. This summer, he was at Cullinan Park to do an inspection. Tommy says, “We’re adding trails and parking at Cullinan Park. That day, we were pouring concrete. I was out there to take pictures. I started digging in my back pocket for my phone, and I dropped it. When I reached down to pick it up, the last thing I was thinking about was a snake… there were people around, and construction going on. Then something hit me on the hand. It felt like a hammer. I thought maybe a piece of rebar fell over. I looked down, and it was a snake…a snake had bitten me. I called my boss, and HR recommended we go to St. Michael’s Elite Hospital.” St. Michael’s is locally owned by Dr. Shannon Orsak. “I was able to see a doctor right away,” continues Tommy. “I don’t know my snakes as well as I should, so I had no idea if it was venomous or not. We got a photo of the snake, and when we got to St. Michael’s, they called poison control. It was nonvenomous: a broad banded water snake. They

told me they were still concerned about bacteria from the snake’s mouth, so they did blood work. They cleaned up the wound really well, and gave me antibiotics. I had no side effects. From the time we arrived to the time we left, we were at St. Michael’s for maybe an hour.” That weekend, the doctor that treated Tommy gave him a call. Tommy says, “I was pretty impressed. She was just calling to check up on me and see how things were going. I tell everybody that I’ve never had that happen…the doctor herself called me to follow up. Would I recommend St. Michael’s Elite Hospital? I sure would!” The new trails and additional parking at Cullinan Park are part of the second phase of improvements made possible by a generous donation from the Cullinan Park Conservancy. These improvements provide our community with additional walking and jogging opportunities in nature, while preserving existing native hardwood trees. Tommy says, “They tell me one of the pecan trees in the park is the oldest in the city. I don’t know for certain…but that’s what

they tell me.” A planned third phase of improvements at Cullinan Park includes a nature play and exploration area. If you’ve never visited, Cullinan Park is similar in size, though slightly smaller than, Central Park in New York City. It’s a beautiful green space right here in our community.

YOUR GARBAGE DISPOSAL

CAN’T HANDLE

The Holiday Waste by Amy Sharp

I

f you’re cooking a holiday meal this season, chances are, drippings, poultry skins, pumpkin pulp, and more are involved. If you don’t want a visit from your plumber, do not jam these items down your garbage disposal. “The days leading up to Thanksgiving are some of the busiest days of the year for us,” says Alan Burkhalter, founder of local Alan’s Plumbing. “In anticipation of the holiday, people are cleaning out their fridge…and a lot of it goes in the garbage disposal. Most of those foods wreak havoc. Never pour oils or drippings down the drain or into your garbage disposal. Poultry skins, eggshells, carrots, celery, pumpkin pulp, potato skins, banana peels, and pasta can also cause backups. Use a garbage bag instead.” After major use, you should also flush your garbage disposal. Alan says, “To do this, simply fill the sink with warm to hot water, pull the plug, and turn on the disposal...flushing everything out of it. Another good way to clean the disposal is to pour ice cubes down it and turn it on. The ice shards will effectively scour all the hard to reach areas of the unit, and then melt

down the drain. Super easy.” With company in town, it’s not just your kitchen pipes that are working overtime...it’s all of them. The Alan’s Plumbing team sees lots of main line clogs this time of year too. A gurgling toilet, or gurgling anywhere, is a sign of a stoppage in the main line, and you need to call a plumber when this happens. If you have sewer backing up into a tub or shower, or if there’s flooding around the toilet base, you can relieve the pressure by locating the square-topped, white, PVC clean out cap outside of your home. Opening the cap will relieve the pressure, moving

the water outside until your plumber arrives and can snake the line. Alan says, “If you don’t know where your clean out cap is located, give us a call. We’ll help you find it. It’s a lot better to have the water outside than inside!” Back in the beginning (about 30 years ago!), the Alan’s Plumbing team consisted of only Alan and his wife Jennifer. Jennifer answered the calls, and Alan provided service for those calls. Today, Alan’s brother Chris works alongside Alan’s two oldest sons, Beau and Luke, while their youngest son, Jake, does plumbing sales in Houston. This dynamic team includes longtime plumbers Jaime, Christian, Anthony, and Nick, with Jennifer running the back office and longtime family friend Katie as the voice behind the phones. “Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Alan’s Plumbing!”
