Message from the Editor-in-Chief
Entering a realm of newfound height has been both an excitement and a challenge for UP Aggregates, Inc. For our 37th year, wemanagedtoexplorethenewnormal— the opportunities of facilitating both remote and face-to-face activities. The transition has not been easy for most of ourmembers:westruggledtobalancethe face-to-face academic load, reinstated civil engineering curriculum schedule, extra-curricular work, and the physical demand of going to school every day. Changes are often perceived as difficult, butwemanagedtobestrongerthanever.
This year’s Sieve revolves around metamorphosis, an exciting and interesting phase of development. We likenthisyear’sissuetoabutterflycoming out of its cocoon: stories of exploration, successes, and changes after dormancy. Here, we documented several events that embody the spirit of camaraderie through EnggWeek 2023, AHC, and F2F bonding sessions; scholastic excellence through ESQ and Aggreviews; and social responsibility through AGB, leading to our members’ and the organizations’ holistic growth. We also focused not mainly on the outcomes of the activities, but the members’ contributions to these endeavors, as we firmly believe that the backbone of Aggre is none other than its activeandhardworkingmembers.
Let this iteration of Sieve be a manifestation of Aggre’s long-lasting commitment to serving the people through civil engineering even in the hardestofchanges.

Aggre Opens Its 37th Year Reaching Greater Heights
Reiner Vince Chavez
Upwardistheonlydirirection Aggre intends to take for its 37th year. After two years of navigating through the unknownastheworldshifted to the new normal, and then emergingtotheforefront, the organization has become more eager to reach greater heights. Aggre brings out its full potential as it opens the year with activities for the pursuitofitslong-livedmotto, “Acads first but not acads only.”
Thisyear’svisionisanchored towards growing above the boundaries of past practices and the challenges brought about
about by the pandemic. “For 37 years, Aggre has constantly built a foundation for civil engineering students togrow;ahometorest;anda family to celebrate with. This year, with the foundations in place,it'stimeforAggretogo and grow beyond,” as described by the UP Aggregates, Inc. President, Lean Ocampo. The organization also envisions itself to stretch out beyond academicsthisyear, asitlays outeventsandinitiativesthat emphasize the role of civil engineeringinserviceforthe community and the nation, such as Aggreviews, Aggre Gives Back (AGB), and Intercollegiate
Intercollegiate AggregatES Quiz.
Along with its dream to ascend this year externally through major events, Aggre aims to fulfill its mission of sustainability and balance for itsmembers.Withamultitude of plans and events, there is no doubt that there will be moments when academics and organization work may come clashing with each other. As Ocampo said, “the members truly care and look out for each other; however, wehavebeenstrugglingwith balancingouracadsandorg.”
Thatiswhytheorganization’s committees are also considering
01 SIEVE 2022-2023
dering more systematized and non-conflicting workloads to ensure “growth and efficiency, and activities to allow recreation.” With more organized, sustainable, and reduced work, Ocampo thinks that Aggre’s ascent wouldnotbehinderedbythe burnoutsofthemembers.
Most establishments have been gradually shifting towards hybrid modes as the world enters the new normal. Academic institutions, and subsequently, school organizations, have yet to adjusttothesituation.Forthis semester, Aggre has been trying both on-ground and online initiatives for its members. Face-to-face organization fairs and bonding events are being blended
blended with online tutorial programs, seminars, and meetings. Ocampo believes that this combined mode of organizationdynamicswould promote camaraderie and holistic growth among its members and the communities.
The journey to reaching greater heights after two years of the pandemic is not an easy adventure but will surely be fulfilling. UP Aggregates, Inc. has yet to conquer more challenges in the new normal. Its push towards a new era would not be possible without the collective efforts of its past, current, and future members. May its 37th year be the year of its start to a renewed, goldenblaze.
Becoming a nationally recognized premiere academic organization is obviously such a daunting task, that I am not expecting to be accomplished within a single term. However, we would like to even just lay the foundation for the proceeding term to continuously ascend to greater heights.

According to Mr. Rommel Paray, the Secretary of the Ipo Forest rangers, someoftheirneeds includeradiocommunication systems (i.e., walkie-talkies), mobile phones for documentations, hiking essentials, and butane for cooking in the mountains. Along with the Balagbag Environmental Society, various UP and non-UP organizations also help in checking on the welfare of the forest rangers by deliveringmaterialssuchasa motorized boat for traversing theIpoWatershed.
Mt. Balagbag, which forms the boundaries of Rizal and Bulacan, is part of Sierra Madre mountain range and the Ipo Watershed, which is thesiteofbothIpoandAngat Dams. The Ipo Watershed forms 98% of the main water supply of Metro Manila as part of the Angat-Uliray-IpoLaMesawatersystem.Since then, deforestation has been a major problem in the watershed, which is always attributed to the depletion of watersupplyinMetroManila, along with other issues in climatechange.Theabsence of enough trees results in rainwater eroding the soils, increasing

Onward and Appward: The Application Process in the New Normal
Reiner Vince Chavez, D'Jireh De Jesus, Czarina Grace Maranan, Hannah Angelica Gerona and Kendrick Villarroya
The student organizations of UP Diliman have become the university’s driving force of its student affairs. From as small as organizing general meetingsinaclassroom, toas largeashandlinganightinUP Fair, theseformationsbecome thehomesofmanystudentsin theirundergraduateyears.Itis also through these organizations that we get the colloquialterms tambs, mems, semender, and most importantly, app/s. “Apps” are short for “applicants” who are aspiring members of the organization. Uniquely, most UP orgs offer a semester-long application process that transcends beyond filling out forms and attending the orientation, and Aggre is one of those orgs. With the swift transition from face-to-face to online to hybrid in A.Y. 20222023,howdidtheapplications change throughout the semesters?
21A Aggred Light, Green Light
The “Aggred Light, Green Light,”Batch21A,namedafter the Korean survival drama hit Squid Game, proceeded with the application process with littletonoinformationonwhat is yet to come due to Aggre’s new online application. Lexi DelosReyesandRGGeraldez, twoofthe21Aapplicants,got to know Aggre due to the Freshie Initiative event and their friends who recommended them to join. Despite the online setup, Lexi andRGtogetherwiththeother applicants, enjoyed the application process in Aggre, claiming that it was not heavy to do. They had so much fun that they wished they could have experienced it face-toface. Among the various activities Aggre had to offer such as committee internship and variety show, they found the Bingo Cards the most enjoyable
enjoyable. Bingo Cards are task presented in a Bingo format that applicants must complete to form a “Bingo!”. They found this very helpful since it contains self, coapplicant, buddy, and committee tasks which gave them the chance to interact and socialize with their future co-members. However, challenges in completing the application task occur during their application process. The 21Aapplicantshadahardtime dealingwiththeinternshipand committee work since the tasks and schedules are challenging, broughtonbythe pandemic situation. Nevertheless, theymanagedto get through this and gladly became official members of Aggre having no regrets in joiningtheorganization.Along with dealing with academic life, supportgroupsandreview

21B Aggreni Robredo
Since the pandemic is yet to settle, the online application continues with 21B applicants. As this semester was just near the 2022 National and Local Elections, thebatchnameditself in consensus as “Aggreni Robredo,” from a presidential candidate Leni Robredo, the 14th Vice President of the republic. Three of the 21B applicants, Euven Balanay, EnricoCarlos,DukeDeGuzman gottoknowAggremainlydueto their friend’s recommendation. Andjustlikethe21Amembers, they too have enjoyed the application process of Aggre. They have met a lot of people creating many fun and memorable memories with them. This made them realize that college is more than just academics. Among the many tasks, they enjoyed the interviews
interviews the most. The interviews are applicantmember conversations for the applicantstogettoknowmore about the organization and its members.Anotheronesaidthat the Bingo Cards are overwhelming, andthelastone had a hard time balancing academicsandtheirapplication tasks. Eventually, they have overcome these challenges and become a member of Aggre.Asofnow, theyhaveno regrets and are still happy that they joined Aggre. Transition to Hybrid Learning
Withthegradualreopeningof schools to face-to-face classes, Aggre also transitioned to hybrid application processes for Batch 22A and 22B. Adrian Dayon, the Director for Applications in the 1st semester of the academic year, focused on the welfare of the applicants in his supervision. One manifestation of this is the reinstatement of the buddy system in 22A that was not implementedin21Aand21B, as well as some face-to-face activities such as Tara, Tambs? x MeetAPP in collaboration with the Committee
Committee for Internal Affairs. With more than 50 applicants, 36 of which were welcomed as new members, he honestly felt that maintaining balance may be overwhelming sometimes, especially in dynamics and communication given that the setup is online (with gradual face-to-face activities) and schedules may overlap. Nonetheless, he mentioned communication and creativity in balancing time and energy in leading the organization’s door to membership.
Thesecondsemesterofthis year is a large leap in the Committee for Applications due to the resumption of face-to-face org activities and reopening of the Aggre Tambayan. For 22B, the comeback of face-to-face applicants’ orientation and final interview (now called “APPdate”) has been successful after five semesters. Interviews were also being done in groups at the Tambayan and seeing new faces and listening to mems’ and apps’ stories (whilst in masks) have never been so exciting.
