Let's go back into your childhood as you are reading a series that takes you into another universe. It talks about heroes that can come in all shapes and sizes and that even the most seemingly ordinary individuals can accomplish extraordinary feats. The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan is a story about identity and friendship, set against the backdrop of Greek Mythology. The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical began its Off-Broadway performances in 2014; however, our story began long before.
When Riordan began writing bedtime stories for his son Haley, who had been diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, he began his storytelling career. Greek mythology, a subject that Riordan had long taught to middle school pupils, was integrated into these tales. Riordan made the decision to expand his short stories into a full-length novel after being inspired by his son's enthusiasm and the need to give kids facing comparable problems characters. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, the outcome, was released in 2005. Riordan expanded the series as a result of the book's popularity and ability to connect with young readers looking for humor, adventure, and relatable characters with learning disabilities. This led to the creation of an entire series that not only entertained readers but also taught them about Greek mythology and promoted inclusivity by showcasing diverse, human-like, flawed heroes.
Greek mythology and gods are a compelling mix of historical tales and beliefs that survived for many years. These larger-than-life gods, who lived atop Mount Olympus, each had a distinct personality and control over different facets of the human experience. Greek mythology is extremely fascinating because of the shortcomings and weaknesses that these supernatural beings revealed. The gods were far from perfect; they displayed the same flaws and vices as human beings, such as jealousy and pride as well as lying and recklessness.
The musical's embrace of diversity and individuality is one of its most important messages. The characters show that their differences also make them powerful because they each have their own special talents and weaknesses. Even our main character, Percy Jackson, is not your typical hero because he battles with dyslexia, ADHD, and frequently feels like an outsider. But his experience shows us that, when we learn to use them, our perceived limitations may actually become our greatest strengths. Especially when we have people to help guide us through figuring out who we are and what makes us special.
