DRAMATURG'S NOTE

2024: The New 15th Century

In the 15th century, morality plays were all the rage. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than in a theatre, watching a show that tells you how to be a good person? One of the first recorded in English was Everyman, a Christian work, written anonymously and translated by a monk named Peter. Almost 500 years later, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins adapted Everyman into a modernized re-telling, Everybody. At its core, Everybody delves into the fundamental question of what it means to live a good life and face the inevitability of death. You know, just the simple and easy question of “What is the meaning of life?”

The character of Everybody asks this very question. Faced by Death’s beckoning, Everybody searches for something to bring with them to the other side. They reflect on their deeds in life (good and bad), the friends they made, and even the physical things they owned. In the end, *spoiler alert* Love is the only comfort that Everybody can bring along after a reflective journey on the entirety of their being.

As much as our society has evolved since the 15th century, it is somewhat comforting to know that we are still considering the same question as the audience members of the original Everyman; “How can I be a good person?”

Today’s world is not easy. We are constantly whiplashed between wars, natural disasters, genocides, and not to mention worldwide pandemics. At every turn, there is something new to protest, boycott, fight for, and as it often unfortunately goes, ignore. Every day, we have an opportunity to reflect in the same way the character Everybody does. Is there more I can do? Are we inherently good? In the end, will I have done enough? Humanity does not agree on much. It can be hard to see the things that unite us when that which divides us is so readily available. But, I’d like to believe we can all agree on two things: We have a genuine desire to do good and a hope for a future where we are proud of the impact we have left behind. Boiled down, that’s all Everybody wants: peace, resolution, and comfort that they did all they could to be satisfied with the mark they left on the world.

Rather than “sit back, relax, and enjoy” I ask that you lean in and include yourself in the show. After all, we don’t know how the lottery will turn out…YOU could be Everybody.

CAMDEN BARRETT (Usher/God/ Understanding) is a senior at the University of Utah as part of the Actor Training Program. Recent credits: Radiant Vermin (Director) at Salt Lake Acting Company as the inaugural production of SLAC’s Making Space for Artists Program with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory, The Tempest (Assistant Director and Movement Director, dir. Melinda Pfundstein) at the U, Sarah Shippobotham’s Can I Say Yes to That Dress (Associate Director, dir. Jamie Rocha Allan) at SLAC, Queer the Stage: The Golden Age (Performer) at Good Company Theatre, and As You Like It (Rosalind/dir. Robert Scott Smith) in Studio 115 at the U. LUKE MORTON (Death) is a Senior in the ATP. Originally from Gilbert, AZ, Luke has been lucky to spend over 15 years performing, with credits here at the U including You on the Moors Now (Studio 115), The Sweet Science of Bruising (Babcock), and The Thanksgiving Play (Studio 115). He would like to thank God for his life, his parents for their support and this amazing cast for their joy and collaboration.

MACEY J SHACKELFORD (Somebody) was born and raised in Henderson, Nevada and is currently a junior in the ATP. Recent roles include Natalie in Night Terrors (Dark

Country Film) Polly Stokes US and co-fight Captain in The Sweet Science of Bruising (University of Utah Theatre), Mabelu and The Old Woman in The Old Man and The Old Moon (University of Utah Theatre), and Mia in How Flowers Bloom written by Olivia C Smith(The Alliance Theatre). She will also appear as Lauren in the upcoming feature film Life Almost Gone (Olympian Productions), which is set for a summer 2024 release.

NOAH OMELCHUK (Somebody) is a Senior in the ATP and is represented by TMG. Living in SLC for all his life, and performing for half of that, he has acted both on campus and all-around Utah. His first performance in the program was in 2021’s You on the Moors Now (Darcy) and in 2022’s Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days (Corin), both in Studio 115. He thanks his parents for all their love and support as he begins to bring his education and experiences to the world. Proud recipient of the Fine Arts Utah Flagship Scholarship (‘23-24).

SANDRA DETWEILER (Somebody) is a junior in the ATP. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, she recently appeared as Corin in As You Like It (Studio 115), Mickey in The Old Man and the Old Moon and a musician in Storm Still (Babcock), Marina in Pericles, Starveling in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Bedford in Henry V (Free Shakespeare in the Park, Eugene). She is very grateful to her parents and friends for their love and support. Sandra is a recipient of the Utahna B. Meilstrupp Scholarship.

ASHLEN BORESOW (Girl/Time/Dancer/ Understudy Death) is thrilled and thankful to be performing in her final university production. Originally from Shawnee, Kansas, Ashlen will graduate this May with a BFA in Musical Theatre and Minor in Sociology. EMILY WILLIAMSON (Understudy Girl/ Time) is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and moved to Salt Lake City with her family about a decade ago. She is a second year in the acting training program and her theatre journey started in college here at the University of Utah. Emily was just part of an independent study called The Post Office and looks forward to the collaboration and creativity of the U of U theatre program. She also wants to say thank you to all of her parents, supportive friends, and family.

CARINA PURDY (La Danse Macabre Dancer) is a freshman in the MTP. Carina is very excited to be performing in Everybody Carina, recently, was the dance captain in the Grand Theaters production of Fate. Carina would love to thank her family for their endless support and always showing up. She would also like to thank Erin Speer and Rob Scott for asking her to be a part of this amazing production and getting to create with such amazing people!

ZOE SEARE (Somebody) is a current junior in the Theatre Teaching BFA program here at the University of Utah. Zoe is also a member of the Theatre Teaching Students’ Coterie and has served on the board as the secretary. She recently was the Assistant Director for Seussical TYA with Youth Theatre at the U. Previous credits include Beauty and the Beast as Silly Girl/Dance Ensemble with Star Theatre Oceanside. She enjoys teaching and working with kids, and teaches every summer at the Broadway Vista Kids summer camps. Zoe would love to thank the cast and production team for creating such a kind and supportive environment. She would also like to thank her parents for always being her biggest supporters! MICHAEL TIRRELL (Somebody) is a graduating senior in the ATP, born and raised in West Valley City, Utah. Previously he performed as Paul Stokes in The Sweet Science of Bruising (dir. Andra Harbold) and is excited to return to The Babcock this year as one of the Somebodies. He has also worked on various film projects at The U including Forfeit (dir. Bobby Lin) and Every Age I've Ever Been, which he wrote, co-directed alongside Nick Lloyd, and was produced thanks to The U's Film Production Club. He thanks his parents, brother, sisters, and Ms. Mabel May for their continued love and support.

JACOB SEN (Love) is a senior in the Musical Theatre Program and is originally from Durham, North Carolina. Previous University credits include Grover in The Lightning Thief (Babcock) and Laurie in You on the Moors Now (Studio 115). He would like to thank his professors, family, and friends for their support and encouragement. He hopes you enjoy the show!

OLIVIA HELLIN (La Danse Macabre Dancer) is thrilled to be back in another U of U production! She was most recently seen as Sleeping Beauty in Into the Woods, and other credits include The Prom at Pioneer Theater Company and Bright Star at Hale Centre Theatre Orem. Olivia would like to thank her family for the endless support, and Rob and Erin for this opportunity!

LUCAS VAN ORDEN (Understudy Love/ Somebody) is a sophomore in the University's ATP and comes from San Jose, California. He has a deep appreciation for theater and acting and has enjoyed learning more about the craft through his recent film productions: Beasts (Nate Stranzl), Mouse (Kenny Riches), and A Heart to Have (Courtney Ngo). He is deeply grateful for the support of his friends and family and is very excited to be involved in this year’s production of Everybody.

MARCI PIÑA (Stage Manager) is a senior in the Stage Management Program. She was recently the Stage Manager for “Seussical” (Kingsbury Hall), Production Stage Manager for “Title of Show” (The Grand Theatre), Assistant Stage Manager for “Illyria” (Babcock Theatre), the Assistant Stage Manager for “The Book Club Play” (Babcock Theatre), Stage Manager for “The Emily Dickinson Musical” (Studio 115, Open Door). Marci has previously worked as the resident Stage Manager from 2017 - 2020 for Ícaro Compañía Teatral, a professional theatre company in Mexico City; on “Urinetown” (Teatro Milán); “Argonautika” (Foro Lucerna); “The Pillowman” (Foro Lucerna); and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (Foro Lucerna).

KENNY COSSON (1st Assistant Stage Manager) is in his senior year and is about to graduate with a BFA in Stage Management. Ze started in Southern Utah, being pulled in by zirs drama teacher and a few friends, and found a welcoming place. Ze has continued, working on NWP: Liminal (2nd ASM), The Old Man And The Old Moon (1st ASM), Town Hall (SM), and now Everybody.

LYNN BRISCO (2nd Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore in the stage management program at the U. Following their work as a production assistant with the YTU, they are thrilled to be working on their first department show as an ASM! They would like to thank their family, their partner, and their silly little cat.

TONY TRUNNELL (Production Assistant) is currently a freshman in the U's Stage Management program. Everybody is his first production at the University of Utah. He would like to thank his family, friends, and professors for supporting him. Enjoy the show!

ROBERT SCOTT SMITH (Director) is the Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory, Assistant Professor and Area Head of the BFA Actor Training Program at the University of Utah. Directing credits include credits include The View Upstairs by Max Vernon (Good Company); As You Like It, Tartuffe (adaptation by Ranjit Bolt), Big Love by Charles Mee, and Hamlet (U of U Department of Theatre); SLAC’s New Play Sounding Series reading of Reykjavik by Steve Yockey; and PLAN-B Script-in-Hand series reading of Quarter Horse by Rob Tennant.

ERIN FARRELL SPEER (Choreographer)

Originally from Los Angeles, Erin is an Assistant Professor and is in her first year heading the musical theatre program here at the U. Erin has also taught in the musical theatre programs at UNCG, Penn State and Florida Southern. Erin earned her MFA in Directing for Musical Theatre at Penn State, and her BFA in Acting from the University of Michigan. Broadway and Tour: Escape to Margaritaville. Off-Broadway: Stardust Road (York Theatre Company). Regional: Center Theatre Group/the Mark Taper Forum, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Sarasota Opera House, Heritage Rep, Sierra Rep, CLOC Cape Cod. Favorite directing credits: The Bridges of Madison County, Rock of Ages, Pippin, The Spongebob Musical, American Idiot, Sweet Charity, Company, The Wild Party, All Shook Up, The Scarlet Pimpernel. Upcoming: Newsies (choreographer) at Sundance, Spring Awakening (Director/ Choreographer) at the U.

NIKAYLA STARR NIELSON (Scenic Designer)

is a senior in the PADP with an emphasis in lighting design. She recently designed lights for Tempest. She is also a freelance lighting designer for Fatfish Media and Clear Lamp AV.

ARIKA SCHOCKMEL (Prop Designer) has worked extensively in props and costume crafts for theatre, television, and film. She is the Prop Manager for the Department of Theatre and works as a prop and costume designer for Plan B Theatre. Regional credits include productions at The Egyptian Theatre, UFOCMT, Grand Teton, Dark Horse, SLAC, Utah Contemporary, Lyric Rep. USU Alum. Member of S.P.M., the Society of Prop Managers. Other projects include stage management, music, event hosting/ emceeing, and the occasional acting gig.

SAVANNAH GERSDORF (Assistant Production Manager) is a senior in the Stage Management Program. She has enjoyed working on shows at the University including The Sweet Science of Bruising (SM), The Old Man and the Old Moon (APM), Matilda Jr. the Musical (SM), Storm Still (ASM), and The Tempest (SM). Savannah has worked with Pioneer Theatre Company as a dresser for Hello Dolly, Shucked, A Christmas Story - The Musical, and Putting it Together, and is headed to work with Texas Shakespeare Festival this summer. She would like to thank her family and friends for supporting her, and give a huge thank you to her team for all of their incredible hard work and dedication.

ALEXANDRA HARBOLD (Intimacy Director) is Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory and Assistant Professor with the Department of Theatre. MICHAEL J. HOREJSI (Lighting Designer) is an Associate Professor (Clinical) in the Performing Arts Design Program in the Department of Theatre, with an MFA in Design and Technical Theatre from The University of Minnesota. Michael has extensive national and international touring experience with arena and theater shows, as well as sporting spectaculars such as the NBA All Star Jam Session, and the USA Swimming Olympic Trials. Michael has worked as a technician, artisan, and designer for theatres including Oregon Festival of American Music, The Guthrie Theatre, The Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, American Players Theatre, The Great American History Theatre, and others.

PORTER CHARLESWORTH (Assistant Sound Designer) is a sophomore in the Performing Arts Design Program. Recent productions include U Theatre's The Lightning Thief (Audio Engineer, Babcock), Into the Woods (Assistant Sound Design), and he has also been involved with productions at the Grand Theater such as Fate? (Audio Engineer), Harvey (Audio Engineer), and The 39 Steps (Audio Engineer). He would like to thank his friends, family, and many mentors for their generous support along the way.

ELIZABETH WEBB KENNINGTON (Costume Designer) is a graduate from the PADP (Costume Design Emphasis). Previously, Elizabeth designed costumes for Into the Woods (Babcock), Cabaret (Babcock), Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days (Studio 115), and The Book Club Play (Babcock). She currently works as a Production Assistant for the Properties department. Other credits include Costume Crafts Artisan at The Utah Shakespeare Festival (2022, 2023), and Puppet Fabricator for the Tuacahn Amphitheater production of Wonderland (2022). Elizabeth would like to thank her husband, mentors, and professors for their confidence, support, and endless assistance.

LAUREN CARN (Dramaturg) is a junior in the Theatre Teaching Program. Recent credits include: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Dir./UROP), Spongebob (Squidward/YTU/dir. P. Caywood), Elephant and Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!” (As. Director/Salt Lake Acting Company/ dir. P. Caywood), The Verge (Dir./Sallie Bingham Grant), and The Lightning Thief (As. Director/U of U/dir. A. Harbold). Lauren currently teaches with Studio Kids Music, Youth Theatre at the U, Pioneer Theatre Company, and at Uintah Elementary as a BTSALP Drama Fellow. UROP, Utah Flagship, and Promising Playwright scholarship recipient.

CHRIS DUVAL (Producer) is a Professor for the Department of Theatre and was recently appointed as Interim Chair. Previously, Chris served as an Assistant Professor and the Head of BFA/MFA Performance at the University of Idaho, where he directed and taught courses in acting, voice, and movement. He has acted, directed and fight directed throughout the country including at Shakespeare theatres in Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Orange County, as well as world premieres, contemporary plays, and classics at such theaters as the Denver Theater Center, Dallas Theatre Center, South Coast Repertory and many others. He has also worked as a teacher, actor, and fight director at universities, training programs, and regional theaters across the country.

Chris is a Certified Teacher/Certified Fight Director/Theatrical Firearms Instructor with the Society of American Fight Directors, a Master Instructor/Senior Fight Director of Theatrical Combat with Dueling Arts International, an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voice Work, holds a 2nd degree black belt in Aikido, and is a member of AEA. He is the author of “Stage Combat Arts: an Integrated Approach to Acting, Voice and Text Work + Video,” published by Bloomsbury Methuen in 2016. He received a B.A. in Theatre Arts from California State University, Fullerton and an M.F.A. in Acting from the University of California, Irvine.
