Methodology and limitations The Turbo attendance tracking system was used for 27 events and 36 movie titles over the course of the academic year. By scanning their USC IDs upon entering the event, students, faculty, and staff provided Carolina Productions with their names, email addresses, age, classification, gender and mailing address of attendees for tracking on and off-campus involvement. The data reflected in this report does not fully reflect all attendees, as some students came to CP events without their Carolina Card. Surveys created in and delivered by Class Climate (classclimate.uts.sc.edu) were sent out to each attendee who scanned their card. Attendees were asked to complete a brief evaluation of their experience, detailing how they heard about the event, why the decided to attend, whether they enjoyed themselves, and whether they would attend a similar event in the future. This information is useful in planning for future semesters and evaluating our advertising methods. Correlations between attendance at events is on a semester basis. Observations and conclusions First and foremost, credit needs to be given to the students who make up Carolina Productions. These students (at both the basic membership level and those who make up the leadership of this organization) worked tirelessly to create a year’s worth of exciting and engaging events for the students, faculty and staff of the University of South Carolina. Months of brainstorming, planning and executing were involved in each of the 27 programs and 36 movies sponsored by Carolina Productions. They had some amazing successes and a few challenges this year and handled them with dignity and adaptability. History has proven that attendance is higher in the Fall semester. This could result from U101 and other classes offering credit for attending events, or the beginning-of-the-year enthusiasm that students bring. Though some would say that the quality of programs increases in the Spring, this is not always reflected in our audience size. By second semester, students have found their niche, which does not always include attending campus events. Based on the information we have gathered through our assessments, Carolina Productions can conclude that the events that bring the largest audiences are either those which professors can offer extra credit for attending, have heavy pop-culture influence or give students the opportunity to showcase their talents and compete. Student competitions bring more students out not only to support their friends, but because there is an audience text-in vote, they need to be present in order to find out how to vote. Carolina Productions purposefully added the option of “I received class credit for attending” to the “why did you attend this event” question to our assessment, as many times, we are unaware that professors are offering this to students. Though the connections can be difficult to figure out, we appreciate any and all support we receive from our academic partners! When analyzing our assessment, it is clear that Carolina Productions is meeting its goal to provide programs and events that are relevant, entertaining and educational to the University of South Carolina community. With over 13,000 individual students attending, participating or being touched by a Carolina Productions event, we are reaching over half the undergraduate student population at USC. Satisfaction with events averaged 4.41 on a 5 point scale, with 5 being “absolutely satisfied.” When asked if they would attend a similar event in the future, responses averaged 4.5 on a 5 point scale, with 5 being “absolutely would attend.” With the implementation of this evaluation process, Carolina Productions has had the chance to take an indepth look at our audience. Throughout this year (as presumably years past), first year students and women have made up the vast majority of our audiences. This is consistent with college programming around the country. The challenge for Carolina Productions during 2010-2011 will be to increase participation by males as a whole as well as increase upper-class attendance without alienating our significant first-year and female audience. This may take the form of more purposeful and targeted advertising or population-specific programming. Carolina Productions will continue to assess our programs from our audience in the next academic year, and will also being to assess students who participate in our competitions, to understand why they chose to compete and if/how that impacted their time at Carolina. We look forward to sharing our information with you next year!

Duff Goldman (388 Entries) – September 2, 2009 The star of Food Network’s Ace of Cakes appeared in the Russell House Ballroom. With the help of the School Hospitality, Resort, and Tourism Management, 20 teams of two USC students competed in a cake decorating contest judged by the star himself. Cakes were decorated in the Russell House Lobby all day leading up to the event, which brought out a huge crowd, filling the Ballroom to capacity with students, faculty, and staff.

USC’s Got Talent (35 Entries) – February 12, 2010 The Special Programs Committee launched a new student competition this semester with USC’s Got Talent. Nine teams, some solo and some group acts, applied for the talent show, with many different talents on display. Jump-Ropers, martial artists, a capella groups, and many other acts took the stage at the Strom Thurmond Fitness and Wellness Center. Unfortunately, winter weather caused low attendance, but with the student interest generated from the event, future productions of USC’s Got Talent should be a great success.
