BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Whatever your skill set or interest, there’s a place for you in the growing field of public health. Our graduates are prepared to work in healthcare, insurance, nonprofits, health departments, government agencies, military and uniformed services, universities, consulting firms, and other for-profit enterprises.

Student Support & Advising

Our award-winning advisors and student services personnel are dedicated to students’ academic progress and wellbeing. Our team offers personalized academic advising, helping students navigate course selections, degree requirements, and academic challenges. Additionally, they provide valuable resources and information on career opportunities in public health, assisting students in exploring various paths and preparing for their professional futures. At SPHIS, the student services team ensures that undergraduates in public health successfully navigate their academic pursuits, achieve their career aspirations, and graduate with the knowledge and skills needed to make a meaningful impact in the field of public health.

Student Experience

Our public health faculty seek to empower students through teaching, research, and service to transform communities. Public health students discover a community of support where shared academic and social activities are found in and outside the classroom. Opportunities in leadership, service, research, and learning are essential in the public health experience and journey. Students will discover an inclusive and supportive learning environment that begins with their first semester through graduation and beyond.

Public Health Organizations

The American Public Health Association (apha.org) strengthens the public health profession and speaks out for public health issues and policies backed by science. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (aspph.org) is another resource to learn more about the field of public health and career possibilities. The school also has an active Student Government Association (SGA) and operates the UofL chapter of the Kentucky Public Health Association (KPHA).

Career Readiness & Experiential Learning

In public health, career preparation starts when you are a freshman and continues with a career readiness course in your junior year. You will then use the skills you have learned to identify an internship. This six-credit-hour capstone requirement is a culminating practice experience where students apply classroom knowledge to real world public health issues. There are over 100 approved experiential learning opportunities, including the Wilderness Corps, American Diabetes Association, Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness, Kentucky Department for Public Health, and Trilogy Health Services.

Choosing to study Public Health at UofL has continued to be one of the best decisions I have made while on my journey into medicine. The exposure to healthcare and community ethics, equality and equity allows me to comprehend and experience medicine in a critical and holistic manner. Public Health taught me to identify the complexity of each patient’s intersecting identities contributing to their overall health and experiences within healthcare.
