The humanities, housed in UofL’s College of Arts & Sciences alongside natural and social sciences, explore the human experience’s deeper questions. Celebrating artistic, creative and intellectual expression, our degrees prepare students for diverse careers in business, healthcare, education, media and more, supported by a robust program offering research opportunities, internships and accelerated degrees.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Internship Opportunities

Gain real-world experience with several internship opportunities at local organizations, including the Speed Art Museum, American Printing House for the Blind, Louisville Metro Public Art and many more.

Research

Undergraduate students may participate in ongoing research with faculty, starting as early as their freshman year. Qualified students may also obtain undergraduate teaching assistantships and/or undergraduate research and creative activities grants.

Student Organizations

Many student organizations are available for humanities majors, including academic honor societies, Arts & Sciences Student Council, language clubs, Phi Sigma Tau and more.

Study Abroad

Study abroad and international service learning programs are available in Belize, Botswana, Brazil, China, Croatia, France, India, Ireland, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Spain and more! The World Scholars Program, unique to the College of Arts & Sciences, provides students with up to $5,000 of funding to support a significant study experience to a non-English speaking country or region.

Live and Learn

Live and study in one of our Living-Learning or Themed Communities (LLC/TC)! First-year and second-year options are available. Participants will have increased faculty and staff engagement, opportunities to actively engage in community-specific programs and be exposed to campus resources relevant to their academic, personal and professional endeavors.

Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s

UofL offers many accelerated programs, offering students the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years.

DEGREE PROGRAMS

American Sign Language

American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. Gain the training to become a qualified interpreter, including learning ASL, understanding the basics of ASL linguistics, learning deaf history and culture, and the fundamentals of the interpreting process.

Art

The Studio Art track is intended for students who wish to receive a broad experience in studio practice within the context of a liberal arts education. Areas of study include ceramics, drawing, fiber/mixed media, glass, new media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and special topics.

The Art History track introduces students to the history and appreciation of the visual arts, while developing skills in visual analysis, critical thinking, research and writing.

Art - Fine Art (BFA)

Intended for professionally oriented art and design students and for those planning to pursue graduate work in the studio arts or to assume leadership positions in the fields of graphic or interior design, the BFA degree allows students to go into more depth in their chosen area.

Available tracks include Graphic Design, Interior Design and Studio Art.

Comparative Humanities

Comparative Humanities broaden cultural insights and critical skills, offering a degree that prepares graduates for diverse career opportunities in today’s dynamic job market.

Available tracks include Comparative Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Linguistics, and Religious Studies.

English

English studies focuses on careful analysis and critical thinking skills while examining literature’s connections to culture, history and other disciplines. Build core skills in critical reading, writing and research with a degree that prepares graduates for the professional world and/or postgraduate studies.

Available tracks include Creative Writing, Literature and Professional and Public Writing.

French

French is a language spoken on five continents and in over 50 countries, where it is used regularly in government, business and everyday life. Explore and gain mastery in a wide range of classes from beginning French to literature, culture, media, linguistics and film.

Philosophy

Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality and existence. It trains us to notice what most often passes unseen and question what we take for granted. Develop high-level analytical and communication skills with a degree that prepares students for the professional world and postgraduate studies in fields such as medicine, business, teaching, civil service and law.

Available tracks include Bioethics, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.

Spanish

Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Learning Spanish provides many opportunities such as business to research, technology, travel, sports, gastronomy, film, literature, art and more.

Available tracks include Spanish as a Second Language and Spanish as a Heritage Language.

Theatre Arts

The ancient art of theatre exists in its fullest form of expression through the creation of performances shared with an audience. Gain knowledge in all aspects of theatre and develop a professional attitude and work ethic that serve students throughout their lives in whatever profession they pursue. The department is home to the nationally-recognized African-American Theatre Program.

Individualized Major (Liberal Studies)
