INSPIRING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

UAlberta is the home of inspirational education and innovations that uplift the world around us. Here are just some of the inspiring people, achievements, and discoveries to come from UAlberta:

Saving lives with nanotechnology! UAlberta engineer Robert Burrell created Acticoat, a life-saving bandage that is infused with tiny silver crystals. Acticoat bandages kill bacteria and speed up healing time — they have revolutionized the treatment of serious burns and wounds around the world. Creativity and humour on TV’s The Simpsons, co-written and executive produced by alumnus Joel Cohen. Justice in Canada’s Supreme Court. Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin is an alumna and the first woman to hold this role. Play Around the World, an annual three month placement in Thailand, where UAlberta students provide opportunities for play and recreation to populations in need, such as people with disabilities, young offenders, and orphans. www.physedandrec.ualberta.ca/UndergraduatePrograms/InternationalOpportunities A new vaccine to combat Hepatitis C — UAlberta researcher Dr. Michael Houghton discovered the vaccine, which could eventually be used to fight all strains of this disease, ultimately changing the lives of those with Hepatitis C and preventing others from future spread of the disease. An ultrasound device to regenerate dental tissues in humans, invented by Dr. Jie Chen, Dr. Ying Tsui, and Dr. Tarek El –Bialy. A team of engineering students has designed and built an Eco Car! This zero-emission electric car is eco-friendly — every part of the car has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind. The Eco Car Team will compete in international competitions, and aims to be part of a transcontinental 3,000 km highway race across Australia in October, 2013. www.ualberta-ecocar.ca
