Music alum Jim Raycroft is an accomplished singer, conductor and musician, having sung with the Los Angeles Opera and performed all over the world. He has sung for the President of the United States, the Queen of England and even appeared on the Grammys and in the Hollywood film the Pirates of the Caribbean At World’s End. Ross Lockwood earned his BSc in Honors Physics and a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Alberta. Throughout his academic work, Ross was involved with outreach through the University of Alberta Observatory and Scuba Club, which lead to his participating in the NASA-funded HI-SEAS Mars Simulation. Upon graduation, Ross went on to start the Science Hardware Hackerspace within the Department of Physics, and is now working on courseware for a Black Hole MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). Lida Xing, a student from China who completed a UAlberta Master’s in Paleontology, is an accomplished researcher, artist, and author! UALBERTA ALUMNI STORY Ken Bautista, BEd 1999 Ken Bautista is Co-Founder of Startup Edmonton and Flightpath Ventures, activating and investing in Edmonton’s startup community through initiatives like The Startup City Project and Students to Startups. Ken has been in the creative/tech industry for over 10 years, co-founding several interactive companies, most recently Rocketfuel Games, an educational games studio, and co-founded community initiatives like TEDxEdmonton and artsScene Edmonton. "In my second year of University, I decided to be an Orientation Leader, and during Orientation Week, I was actually Patches the Panda mascot! It was super fun! Since by second year I knew what I wanted to do, I became a lot more engaged, which I think makes a big difference. And then I joined the Education Students' Association, and in my third and fourth year I was the Technology Director for the ESA and then helped to develop the new website, things like that. Since graduating, I’ve had two companies. During that time, I worked with
different incubators in the city that would offer some space and some coaching, which were really valuable for me because I didn’t know anything, really, so I wanted to learn from everyone around me. But you had to step out and start doing that in those environments. I think the thing that was missing there was the community piece. And I think with the second company, Rocketfuel Games, especially since we were working with companies a lot outside of Edmonton, and people thought we were working from Vancouver or Toronto because we were developing educational kids software and we spent a lot of time on the road. Then coming back to Edmonton we thought, “is there anything going on here, why create this thing here.” And that’s where the first Startup Edmonton stuff started to form was because we could either take off, which would be the easy thing to do, or we could try to make something happen here. In Edmonton, because it is smaller (or a small big city), we have a chance to make noise, and raise the bar for what we’re doing. I think that has been the difference, especially over the last three to five years—there has been a new wave of leaders coming out and building companies, starting stuff, doing things. When you start to get that mass, then the rest of the community starts to notice, and in bigger cities that doesn’t tend to happen.”

People get to see what you are doing; they’re listening; they’re asking questions. You are making a little bit of contribution to the field. I also increased my skills in communication. You can complete your pre-professional year at UAlberta. Most undergraduate programs can be entered directly from high school, but some require at least one year of preprofessional study before you can apply. You can take all of your pre-professional courses at UAlberta.
The Bridging Program (BP) is for excellent students who meet all of UAlberta’s academic criteria but still need to improve their English skills in order to enter a degree program. Students can take English language courses at UAlberta and earn academic credit at the same time. After you complete the BP successfully, you can continue as a full-time undergraduate student.
