Thank you to everyone for joining us this evening to celebrate what has been a fantastic year of university sport. It has been wonderful to see so many students getting involved in sport, particularly postpandemic, and the successes of the year could not have been possible without a number of individuals.

We are very grateful to our sponsors, Timepiece, for their continued support and generosity throughout the year. We value our partnership with you and many events could not have been possible without your help.

My thanks extends to Alison Davidson, our director of sport, and everyone in the wider athletic union team, whose dedication to enhancing the student sport experience have been second to none. It has been a pleasure to work alongside such motivated individuals, without whom the student sport experience would not be what it is today.

Additionally, our student committee members, many who are present this evening, have put in an incredible amount of effort to their clubs this year, both on and off of the pitch. I have really enjoyed working with them and would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for everything you have done this year.

Finally, I am pleased to welcome Mike ShoreNye, Professor Timothy Quine and Linda Peka to this event, and I am delighted that they will be presenting the awards later this evening.

University of Exeter Colours & Awards

History The Athletic Union Colours and Awards ceremony is a prestigious event dating back to 1947, that recognises exceptional commitment and talent in students each year. It is a tremendous achievement for a student to receive recognition for their hard work over the year and in return the awards are a chance for the university to show their appreciation.

There are 3 different types of awards: Club Award - A Club Award may be awarded to a student who has given outstanding service and commitment to their club(s). This can be a member of the committee, team captain, a student coach or a volunteer who goes above and beyond to serve their club. Administrative contribution, leadership roles, playing service, coaching, dedication, loyalty and positive role model are all terms that are associated with this individual.

Club Awards will only be awarded once to a student to reflect the commitment needed to receive this award.

Club Colours - Club Colours are awarded for exceptional achievement within a sport, including national student representation or other representative honours. Outstanding performance for the University of Exeter in inter-university competition shall be given particular weight.

Club Colours will be reviewed each year and a student may be awarded a Club Colour multiple times whilst at university.

University Colours - University Colours are awarded to students who have gained full or under-21 international representation or British Students representation, while regularly representing the University at the highest level and performing with unusual distinction.

John Dunford Men’s Rugby Union Player of the Year The John Dunford Award is presented annually to the Men’s Rugby Player of the Season, recognising a student who has performed exceptionally throughout the season on the field, as well being a fantastic ambassador for the University. The Award is named after alumnus John Dunford, who studied Agricultural Economics and captained the 1st XV from 1950 – 1952. John remained involved with the University into his 70’s in teaching and research capacities, and always retained a passion for rugby. John sadly passed away in 2014, but thanks to the support of Jim (Class of 1952) and Wanda Hollensteiner, we are proud to honour John and his contribution to sport at the University through the naming of this Award.
