DINING

Dining at the University of Notre Dame

Whether it’s hopping in for a quick meal and chatting with the friendly staff or enjoying an hour-long dinner with friends, the dining halls are a place where community thrives. The welcoming atmosphere and shared experiences have made meals some of my favorite moments at Notre Dame. The dining halls become not just a place to eat—they’re a place where friendships grow and where Notre Dame truly feels like home.

At Notre Dame, we’re not just about filling your plate; we’re about nurturing your well-being, fueling your academic success, and respecting the world around us. Every meal connects you with friends, classmates, and faculty, creating a vibrant and inclusive community where everyone has a seat at the table.

Your health and wellness are our top priority. Our menus feature nutritious choices that meet a variety of dietary needs and preferences—because when you feel good, you can be a force for good in the world.

Designed for convenience and flexibility, our meal plans work with your schedule so you can get snacks on the go or sit down with your friends in the dining hall.

Our Offerings

Food is Our Love Language

At Notre Dame, we know that a variety of healthy options that focus on well-being and culturally diverse choices help us learn about the world around us and fuel our mind, body, and spirit. And delivering this fuel in environments where you can break bread and build your community is what makes Notre Dame unique.

Our Dining Hall Community

North Dining Hall and South Dining Hall are more than just places to eat – they’re vibrant social hubs where students connect, share meals, and build community. With their long communal tables and rich traditions, these halls foster an environment that encourages fellowship and conversation, creating a truly Notre Dame dining experience.

- Mason McCart, ‘27 “

The first place I go whenever I want a quick catch up with friends is the dining hall. However, I do not go there just for the sustenance, but for the community and love that I feel from everyone inside. Not only is the food of extraordinary quality, but it is also always served with a smile.

Special Moments

A Recipe for Joy

At Notre Dame, dining is about more than satisfying hunger, it’s an experience that brings people together. Something special happens every week from pop-up activities like cookie decorating and visits from guest chefs to long-standing traditions.

Candlelight Dinners: A Football Gameday Tradition

Dating back to the 1940’s, the tradition of Candlelight Dinner in the dining halls is an opportunity for students and fans to celebrate after an Irish win as one family. The themed meals reflect the gameday spirit with homemade dishes crafted just for the occasion.

Visiting Chef Series

Award-winning, celebrity, and local chefs visit campus to cook for the community and share industry insights.

Special Meals to Celebrate Culture & Tradition

In celebration of our diverse community, we create special meals that honor various cultural and seasonal traditions. From Foreign Language and Culture Week to St. Patrick’s Day, holiday meals bring excitement, specialty offerings, and a fresh experience to your table.

Taste & Vote

Trying new foods and flavors is an essential part of the college experience. Regular tasting events allow you to discover something new and have a say in what’s on the menu.

ALLERGENS

PREFERENCES

- Matthew Fagerheim ‘28 “ ”

I was very relieved to know how much care Notre Dame puts into accommodating those of us with allergies, that I can safely eat good food with my friends at the dining halls. This reflects the University’s commitment to creating a strong community in every aspect of its culture, beyond dorm events, football, and clubs; they truly care about the whole well being of every student.

Our Nutrition Team

With over 20 years of combined experience, Jocie Antonelli and Ally Krager are nutritionists who help students navigate allergens, special diets and preferences, and more. Ally: I love to go to multiple stations to build a balanced plate. It’s a great way for me to personalize my meals.

Southwest Chicken Salad is also a student favorite. Served in both dining halls every Thursday at lunch!

Sustainability

A Force for Good

Notre Dame is dedicated to nourishing the mind, body, and spirit of its university community as it strives to make a positive impact in the world. We focus on several key areas:

Reducing Food Waste

Utilizing Leanpath in our dining halls helps us forecast menus more accurately, minimizing excess food before it’s even prepared.

Increasing Food Diversion

To reduce the environmental and economic impact of wasted food, we:

• Partner with Cultivate Food Rescue to ensure good food reaches those in need.

• Upcycle leftovers through creative kitchen practices that transform scraps into new dishes.

• Donate vegetable trimmings to a local cattle farm to feed animals.

• Employ three Grind2Energy anaerobic digesters to break down food waste into a nutrient-rich slurry to help generate renewable energy.

Encouraging a Plant-Forward Approach

By prioritizing serving clean, high-quality ingredients and taking a stand against most analog “meats” that contain excessive additives, students are encouraged to discover flavorful and nutritious meals that align with both personal well-being and sustainability goals.

Sourcing Responsibly

We’re committed to sourcing products that not only support our academic community but also protect our planet and promote social equity. We prioritize reducing environmental impact through ethical farming practices, supporting fair labor rights, and pursuing transparency in our supply chains. Through local procurement, we strengthen the community by stimulating the local economy while shortening supply chains to reduce emissions.

Expanding Recycling

We utilize a Single Stream recycling program with opportunities available throughout campus, including the student centers and in our dining halls.

Cultivate Food Rescue, a South Bend based non-profit dedicated to ending the cycle of hunger in Northern Indiana, rescues 50,000 pounds of food annually from Notre Dame.
