IMPACT REPORT FY20

RANDI HUARD 2019-20 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT SPECIAL EDUCATION Your donation makes a difference in the lives of students like College of Education scholarship recipient and recent Special Education master’s graduate, Randi Huard. Randi started her educational career at the University of Oregon, becoming the first in her family to attend college and earning a bachelor’s in Communication Disorders and Sciences. Randi was inspired by her time teaching in inclusive classroom settings. It was a natural choice for her to return to the UO to complete her master’s degree. “By getting my master’s at the UO, I am able to learn from the best researchers in the field and attend one of the best programs in the country. Since starting the Special Education program, I have gained a wealth of knowledge, gained experience working in schools within our community, and have continued to grow as an educator.”

ALVIN LENGKONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT FAMILY AND HUMAN SERVICES For Alvin, a summer job at the Boys & Girls Club sparked an interest in child psychology that changed his trajectory at the UO. Switching from a Chemistry major, he found his path in a double major in FHS and Psychology. As Alvin says, “I added the FHS major because it is hands on and provides a lot of applicable knowledge through rotating internships at local organizations. For FHS students like Alvin, service is central to their academic experience. Through community partnerships with local nonprofits, FHS students gain experiential learning that serves them in their life after college. Alvin plans to build on his experiences with youth and his connections to the UO to create a college readiness program at the Boys & Girls Club, giving back to the community that helped him find his passion.

JAMES MURUTHI ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY AND HUMAN SERVICES Donors like you mean faculty at the College of Education can develop and implement pilot research and outreach projects. This funding for early career faculty is vital to ensuring their success in future funding at the federal and state level. With an award from the Hope Baney Fund, established to support short-term projects undertaken by COE faculty, assistant professor James Muruthi is developing a project to identify and lessen stressors while bolstering mental health in rural social support networks that directly affect LGBTQIA3+ individuals. The Hope Baney Fund award has allowed Muruthi to not only advance his pilot study but has also provided undergraduate students learning opportunities on how to initiate and conduct a human subject research project.
