Our curriculum is built on the principle of putting your needs and goals at the centre. Our courses are designed around practical learning and have employability skills integrated into them. You’ll learn socially alongside fellow students to gain transferable skills and complete authentic assessments that are directly applicable to the real world. No matter what your ambitions are, we’ll help you get there.
Get Future-focused
We provide a range of lifelong career advice and guidance, supporting you while you study with us and beyond. Develop into a future-focused graduate and discover how you can make a real difference in the world. Whether it’s climate change, cybercrime, disease control or mental health, our courses focus on solving global problems that really matter.
How We Teach
Our courses are designed with your needs as the focal point. Whether you already have career plans or you’re still figuring things out, our Chester Future Skills Curriculum ensures our courses will help you achieve your goals as a highly skilled and employable graduate.
Career-focused Teaching
Our academic staff work directly with employers to assess the skills they’re looking for, so we can teach you the theoretical insights and practical applications you need for a successful career in your chosen field. Furthermore, many of our courses allow you to learn the real-world skills you need firsthand, make valuable connections and build your professional network.
Social Learning
Our students work together and learn valuable skills in the process. You will learn alongside like-minded peers and gain a range of valuable interpersonal and transferable skills. Furthermore, you will be taught and supported in-person by passionate and knowledgeable staff who will help you to succeed.
Inclusivity
We have a diverse student body, and ensuring that is reflected in how and what we teach is crucial to how we structure our courses. Alongside staff who come from a range of backgrounds, we have created an inclusive environment that allows students’ thoughts, opinions and backgrounds to play a part in the structure and delivery of our courses via Student Voice Representatives and Student Race Advocates, ensuring every student feels valued, supported and respected.
Authentic Assessments
Our assessments are conducted to ensure you receive valuable skills you can take into the real world. Rather than traditional exams, our assessments are embedded and continuous, with assessments integrated into the learning process and reflecting real-world work. For example, this might take the form of working directly with employers on projects they’re managing, communicating with the public, taking part in interviews, or producing valuable resources, such as blogs, leaflets and podcasts.
Study-life Balance
The majority of our courses are structured in a way that means you’ll consistently know where you need to be and when well in advance, allowing you to focus on your studies alongside paid employment, family and other commitments. Teaching takes place over four terms with you studying no more than two modules at a time, resulting in a timetable that is well-planned and consistent, so it can perfectly complement your current lifestyle.

Before you apply, check online to see if you meet the entry requirements. Bear in mind that you will also need to provide details of two appropriate referees (preferably including one academic referee).
2. Check for a Closing Date
Check whether your chosen course has an application deadline. Most of our postgraduate courses don’t, but there are exceptions – including Nutrition and Dietetics and Social Work. Details of course deadlines can be found on our website.
3. Apply as Soon as Possible
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to advance your career or study something you are passionate about. Our courses tend to fill up quickly, so it is important that you apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. There is no charge to make an application for most postgraduate courses.
4. Look into Funding
If you are interested in applying for funding, research your options, make a note of the deadlines and apply to the relevant funding bodies as soon as possible.
5. Complete Your Application in Good Time
You will be asked to provide a range of information, including a personal statement, your employment history and details of your qualifications. You may also be asked to complete a fees assessment to determine the level of tuition fee payable. Allow yourself plenty of time to produce or gather this information before submitting your application.

How to Apply for Postgraduate Research Degrees
1. Contact the Relevant Faculty
This is to establish whether the appropriate supervisory expertise and capacity is available for your specific project. The supervisor will probably want to discuss your proposal with you, so you should consider what you might want to discuss. At this stage, it is useful to provide an outline proposal of 100-250 words. For more information about the University’s research areas and contacts, please visit: chester.ac.uk/research-areas
If you cannot find the details for your chosen research area on our website, please email: pgradmissions@chester.ac.uk
For more information, visit: chester.ac.uk/pg-apply
2. Apply via the Online Form on our Website
Paper application forms are no longer issued, except in cases where an online application would be impossible for the candidate. You should select two appropriate referees and inform them; once your application has been submitted, the system will automatically contact your referees on your behalf.
Documents required with your application include:
• Copies of certificates/transcripts
• Copy of English language proficiency certificate (if required)
• Full curriculum vitae
• Broad outline of your proposed research project
• You may also be asked to complete a fees assessment to determine the level of tuition fee payable.
If you will be based overseas for your research, you will also be asked to answer additional questions. Once your application is submitted, it will be forwarded to the relevant course leader for consideration.
3. Invite to Interview
Once your application has been received, an interview with the proposed supervisory team and an independent academic will be arranged.
4. Outcome
You will usually be contacted with a decision within four weeks; however, please ensure you respond to requests for further information as quickly as possible. If your application is successful, an offer of a place will be made in writing.
