Dear Cohort,

A wise person once said, it’s about the journey, not the destination. To say that this year in the MPP program has been a journey is quite the understatement. From starting our first day as a cohort in the MSM lecture hall for the very first introduction to public policy lecture, to our very last day in our specializations, we have come a long way. We came into this program wide eyed and open minded, and are leaving with a wealth of knowledge and memories to last a life time.

Throughout this enriching journey we’ve had, we get a step closer to our career destinations. Though this destination of completing our master’s degrees is nearing, it is yet another beginning to our careers ahead. We hope that when you think back on this year we spent together, it brings you nothing but happiness, and also some laughs. As a DEMOS board we got to see this program through a unique lens.

However, challenging this year may have been, it ultimately prepared us for the future, and came with many laughs, memories, and unforgettable people.

We would like to thank everyone that was a part of the various projects we participated in this year. Athanasios and Mathias from EduCom, Lara and her weekly newsletters, Femke and Priyanka for their participation in the UNU Peace and Progress Journal, Jessica and San for their dedication to the sweaters, and the amazing members of the Winter Gala Committee and the Graduation Committee. Lastly, we would like to thank all of YOU, the MPP 2018-2019 cohort, for electing us to serve as your DEMOS board.

As we gather around to celebrate the end of this journey, let’s remember where we started and how far we came. In the words from Jude, our Vice President, “change the world as best as you can and don’t let your knowledge of public policy go to waste”.

A letter from Julieta Marotta

Dear Students, Almost one year has passed since that morning we met for the first time at Lumiere. At that time, we were a group of enthusiastic people with many expectations about what this experience would entail. Now, we are a community. A community that showed care for each other and that does not fear complexity. A community that showed we are stronger when we think together. A community that understands that knowledge is created in the context of strong communication and that diversity enriches that knowledge and the understanding of policy. Ultimately, a community that acknowledges that complexity is the best companion for those who are eager to work with and for society.

Life is a dynamic sea in constant change, and the MPP has been sailing in your sea during these past months. I hope that during your sailing experience you were able to get closer to yourself, closer to understanding who you are, and what competences you have to share with others. You should now be prepared to “exhaust� the use of those competences while contributing to the betterment of society. I hope you use your competences and knowledge wisely and that you never give up in the constant search of the right environment for you to perform.

I wish you well in the continuation of your sailing trip, and, as Margaret Mead said, "never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." I hope that you take a part of the MPP with you, as we will keep a part of you with us.

As much as MPP broaden my academic knowledge, personally it impacted me so much more. MPP is the most diverse setting I have ever been in and it helped have a very open mind about everything.

I now know myself better. I know my maximum is seven coffees and 4000 words a day. I know i can go for two weeks on three hours sleep per night. I know i can read 400 pages in two days. And i now know i shouldn't eat three burritos in a row. Self awareness is key.

But seriously, it has been amazing. To make real, positive change for a better world there are three options. Have a substantial amount of money available, like billions, to throw at an issue. Help someone else, other than our selves, to make their world better. And, to get involved in public policy. While some day i hope to have the first, MPP has reinforced for me how important small changes in someone else' life can be; while at the same giving me with the tools to influence policies create and influence real change.

Up until MPP, I had lived in the United States almost my entire life. I wanted to study in an international setting to get what I couldn't get in the US - a global perspective, classmates with a variety of backgrounds and peers from all around the world. Working together with MPP fellows from very different countries and backgrounds has inspired me to discover policy and development topics from different perspectives. The MPP represents tremendous personal growth to me. Besides all the knowledge gained from all the classes, the MPP has provided me the courage to believe in my strengths and the ability to work hard on my weaknesses. The MPP has reassured me of my passion for equality, social inclusion, women empowerment, innovation and diversity. Coming from a small island, the MPP has made me even more proud to say that I am Aruban and I represent my country with honor everytime I walk through the UNU building. Being far away from my home country, I have personally experienced the saying; “home is where the heart is”. Maastricht and the MPP has been my home this academic year and I have gotten to share numerous experiences with people from all over the world. I have made friends whom I will carry with me going forward in life and have learned valuable lessons I will never forget. I feel greatly inspired by the program and the educators to be an advocate for people and the earth. The MPP has impacted me as a young professional to realize that in the end, I have the responsibility to be the difference I would like to see in the world. I will be forever grateful for that.
