HeartS & MIND CELEBRATION TREE 2023
A SHARED VISION 'Members of The Stitchbook Collective have a shared interest in hand-stitching for good mental health, lifelong learning and most of all, an interest in forming personal connections with likeminded people.' My name is Helen Birmingham. I live and work in Scarborough in North Yorkshire, running a company called Untangled Threads. I call myself a Mixed Media Textile Artist, but I'm just as happy to be known as a stitcher, a crafter, a workshop provider, a facilitator or a teacher. I love working with textiles. For me, textiles have a direct connection to my understanding of what it is to be human; a form of identification, of belonging - of history. I originally formed The Stitchbook Collective in 2019, as a direct result of interest in the enormously successful 1,568 Sawdust Hearts Project in 2018. I was particularly struck by the powerful effect of working in collaboration with others; using repeated textile elements to form one installation. A proportion of our monthly subscriptions are donated directly to MIND, and we also work on fundraising projects as a group. The Hearts & MIND project has been our major fundraising event for 2023. The project was launched in July 2023. Participants were offered the opportunity to return their decorated heart for inclusion in an online sale. This catalogue contains images of all the hearts which were returned by 15th November 2023.
The project was opened up to everyone who has been associated with Untangled Threads over the last 5 years. I was delighted that we sold over 700 Hearts & MIND kits across the country. Each kit contained basic materials and a link to an online workshop. Every sale helped to support our fundraising efforts.

The Stitchbook Collective is here to support and encourage. We have over 200 members with enormously varying levels of expertise .. we share knowledge and ideas generously, and our only rule is to BE KIIND to one another. The archive of techniques is permanently available when members want to try something new, and the monthly workshops and magazines are there as a regular source of inspiration and encouragement.
