A GUIDE TO FIRST YEAR OF UNIVERSITY

On behalf of the UNSW Engineering Society (EngSoc), I warmly congratulate you on making it to the top university for engineering in Australia and welcome you to this new and exciting chapter in your lives! Even though I’ve been at this university for 5 years now, the memories from my first year are still vividly clear in my mind. Finishing our ENGG1811 lab late at night every week, me and my friends would talk about our courses and life in general as we walked down the main walkway to Chatime on Anzac Parade. Then there were the times when I would get clowned by my friends for doing anything but listening to the lecturer in the Physics Theatre. Now, that definitely came back to bite me when final exams came around.

I know you all are bursting with anticipation, and I can assure you that UNSW is every bit as fun and memorable as you think it’s going to be. My only regret is not getting involved with more university extracurriculars in my first and second years.

Personally, I didn’t have any older siblings or friends to tell me about what I should or shouldn’t do when I got to university. Which is why it makes me so happy to see the amazing work which has gone into this guide, and I hope that it is able to become the older sibling or friend to guide you through your first year at UNSW. Now if you love this guide, I’m sure you’ll love the other great work done by the EngSoc. Our purpose is to support your growth and development, to become wellrounded engineers as well as to help you have the most fulfilling university experience possible. We achieve this by running a variety of social, academic and professional events such as our annual All Years Camp, Ball, High Tea with Industry, Speed Networking Night and many more. We also have some fantastic programs including our Peer Mentoring Program which is an absolute essential for those wanting to make friends or perhaps feel a little lost as they move from high school to university. The journey of studying to become an engineer is certainly a longer path than most, and as a society run by students for students, we hope to support you every step of the way!

PUBLICATIONS Congratulations on making it into UNSW! What an exciting start to your new journey. You must be really nervous for your first day of University! Or maybe, you’re reading this in your final trimester, finally finding out the Engineering Society had made a guide for first years. Either way, we hope this guide is useful for whoever is reading right now.

The Publications portfolio has put together a little something to make your first year in University a whole lot easier. It contains everything we - the older, wiser, students of UNSW - know about getting through University. From choosing your core courses to degrees, even to the best study spots or foods on campus, this guide has got you covered. ​UNSW Engineering Society (EngSoc) is the constituent engineering society at UNSW. Our member base consists of all students within the nine schools of the UNSW Faculty of Engineering. Throughout the years we have been trendsetters in implementing events aimed at up-skilling students that range from bespoke programs to industry networking opportunities and workshops. Our main goal has always been to ensure that students are equipped with the skills, confidence and support needed to make an impact in the industry. ENROLMENT 101

Your guide to getting onboard!

Course Enrolment opens around the end of each year. Head to the Enrolment page on myUNSW to choose your courses. Spots in each course are limited, so make sure you get in quick!

Class Registration is when you pick the actual times of your class in a week. It opens at the end of each term.

Head to the bottom of the term's enrolment page, and click 'register for classes'. If you're registering with a friend, make sure you pay attention to the class number as well!

Enrolment Glossary Prerequisite Foundational courses you must complete before taking a certain course. Corequisites can also be completed at the same time.

Exclusion Courses you can't do if you've completed a particular course.

Stops you claiming credit for multiple courses which cover the same material.

Discipline elective Engineering courses which relate to your specialisation. You'll usually be given a list to choose from.

Free elective Any course you'd like from around the uni! Just make sure you meet the enrolment conditions.

General Education Any course outside the School of Engineering (or whatever faculty you belong to). You have to take these so you receive a broader education!

A timetable clash is when you have two or more classes on at the same time. If one is a recorded lecture you're fine, but if attendance is mandatory at both class, you'll have to fill in a form on the UNSW Student Portal to get your clash approved.

Don't panic! It's not mandatory to take all "first year" classes in your first term, or even in first year. But if you really need to take the course (if it will impact your progression), you can call the Nucleus and they can probably squeeze you in!

Check out the Handbook page for your particular degree and specialisation! Start with the level 1 core courses - we've provided a list further along in this guide as well.

If you're still lost, check out some sample degree plans with the link on the left.

Make sure your timetable balances work and rest! It's not a great idea to have class every single day of the week.

But don't schedule too many backto-back classes in either, or you'll start losing focus in classes later in the day. Experiment and find out what works for you!

Try an external timetabler instead! Timetabling tools like CrossAngles or Notangles are easier to use, and will help you plan for the term ahead. You'll still have to enrol and register on myUNSW though!

CORE COURSES

4 FIRST YEARS

First Year Engineering courses cover the basic sciences that all engineering studies are built upon. However, depending on your major, there might be a few variations on which core courses you must take during your first year.

For the most updated information on which level 1 core courses are relevant to you, refer to the UNSW Handbook. We have outlined the courses that must be taken by all first years below as a little introduction to what you should expect :)

DESN1000 Introduction to Engineering Design and Innovation OFFERED TERMS: T1 | T3 Think of this course as your intro to engineering. No matter what your major is, this course will allow you to experience what it's like to "work" as an engineer in a team project.

You will be taught the theory and practical skills needed to complete your project as you practice working in a team. This course will test your creative problem solving and planning skills as it introduces you to the life of a real engineer.

MATH1131/1141 Mathematics 1A/Higher Mathematics 1A OFFERED TERMS: T1 | T2 | T3 Mathematics 1A is essentially a more in-depth version of the HSC Ext 2 maths course.

It is broken into two streams, Algebra: Complex numbers, vectors and vector geometry, linear equations, matrices and matrix algebra, determinants. & Calculus: Functions, limits, continuity and differentiability, integration, polar coordinates, logarithms and exponentials, hyperbolic functions Higher Math 1A is aimed at students who is deeply passionate for the theory behind mathematical concepts, it is recommended for students who has achieved a combined HSC mark of over 175 in E1 & E2

Assumed Knowledge: HSC EXT 1 Maths

MATH1231/1241 Mathematics 1B / Higher Mathematics 1B OFFERED TERMS: T1 | T2 | T3 Mathematics 1B is similar to Maths 1A in structure, but focuses on linear algebra and integration. The topics covered in the two streams are, Algebra: Vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Introduction to probability and statistics & Calculus: Integration techniques, solution of ordinary differential equations, sequences, series, applications of integration , Prerequisite: MATH1131/MATH1141

PHYS1121/1131 Physics 1A / Higher Physics 1A OFFERED TERMS: T1 | T2 | T3 Physics 1A is an introductions to University Physics as it breaks down the concepts that you got used to in High School with more in-depth mathematics. You will study, Mechanics: particle kinematics in one dimension, motion in two and three dimensions, particle dynamics, work and energy, momentum and collisions, rotation & Thermal physics: temperature, kinetic theory and the ideal gas, heat and the first law of thermodynamics. , Assumed Knowledge: HSC Physics & E1 Maths

Major based level 1 cores There are some First Year Core courses that are only required for certain degrees. For example, every degree under the Electrical Engineering school requires "Higher Physics 1B" to be taken as a level 1 course, as the electromagnetism and optics theories in PHYS1B directly correlate to what you need for electrical engineering.

ELEC1111 will introduce you to a variety circuit fundamentals, such as: Analogue electrical elements, DC and AC circuit analysis techniques and DC and AC analogue electrical circuits

The Vertically Integrated Projects Program is a elective course where students get involved in real world, cutting-edge research projects for every interest; from solar cars, analysing cyberattack patterns and 3D printing medical implants! Students can enrol in the elective from 2nd year onward!

There is a project for every discipline of engineering and every interest. Each project focuses on coming up with solutions to real world problems such as: Developing devices for the early detection of bushfires with 'Mini-solar' Developing AI and machine learning to navigate natural disasters with 'AI 4 Everyone' Designing the next generation of smart artificial heart for transplants with 'Mending Broken Hearts'

Enrol in your 2nd year and join a project!

Undergraduate students can join a VIP team for a minimum of one year. The courses run across three consecutive terms: T1, T2 and T3 (2 UoC per Term) for a total of 6 UoC, which enables students to extend their project-based learning experience beyond a single trimester.

IN-PERSON VS ONLINE TUTORIALS Throughout uni, you will experience a mix of in-person and online tutorials. Some tutorials may only be available online, while other courses may give you the option to come into campus.

Here are some pros and cons to consider when picking and preparing for your tutes!

IN-PERSON Engaging with your tutor and peers Nothing beats face-to-face interactions, especially after so many online classes.

Make the most of your time by collaborating with your peers and asking your tutors for help (so that you can absorb all that tricky coursework!)

PROS On-campus facilities & equipment UNSW has some pretty amazing facilities, from their Makerspaces to the many different laboratories across campus. Make the most of the learning environment by attending your tutes in-person.

CONS Travelling to campus If you live far away from campus, travelling to university to attend one tutorial can be a bit of a hassle. Try to make the most of your travel time by timetabling multiple in-person classes on the same day. Alternatively, you could also schedule some study sessions with your friends at uni!

ONLINE Flexibility - No travel required If you have lots of commitments to balance (such as work), online tutorials can be an excellent option to avoid extra travel to uni. If you have a morning tutorial, you may get the luxury of waking up minutes before your class. Go get that extra sleep!

Social Interaction can be tough Awkward silences? Enough said.

However, remember that your tutor is probably doing their best, so try to engage with them by speaking up during your tute or being active in the chat.

Distractions Galore Warning: if you pick up your phone during a tutorial, you may not get any work done! Remember that you are responsible for your own learning, so actively participate as much as possible.

Regardless of whether your tutorial is in-person or online, you will still be able to get a lot out of these classes - so make the most of them! Important content that is touched on during your lectures will often be covered in more depth in your tutes, with many hands-on practise questions that your tutor will go through. Don't be afraid to get involved, ask questions, and make the most of your tutorials!

Recommended Electives Unless you're taking a double degree, you'll have to take a few gen-eds during your time at uni. Here are our recommendations for nonenginnering electives to take!

GENC3004 Personal Finance A crash course on real world money - including things like budgeting, investing and buying a home.

PHYS1160 Introduction to Astronomy

PSYC1001 Psychology 1A An approachable entry-level course on psychology, covering theories of human behaviour.

CDEV2000 Creating Your Career: Employability for the Future

Delve into the solar system with this course. Famous for being a good WAM-booster!

A course all about helping you get a job! Learn to evaluate the career market. and promote yourself to employers.

HUMS1006 Presentation and Communication Skills

ENGG2600 Engineering Vertically Integrated Project

A class on public speaking, always useful for those presentation projects!

Participate in a project with like-minded people! Find out more on page 15!

GENS1111 Big Fat Myths In this course you'll be debunking weight loss myths, as well as learning some of the science along the way.

Our advice: Don't take a course just because it's easy! Look through the Handbook to find courses that sound interesting to you, because that's how you'll get the most out of your degree.

How to STUDY for EXAMS

EMERGENCY PLAN: ACTIVATED 1. Cover all your bases Hopefully, you've been keeping up with your lectures all term👀, and have your notes ready to be reviewed. You should know all the topics that will be covered in the exam, and have a solid understanding of these concepts. If not, now (1-2 weeks before the exam) is the time to fill in these gaps by reviewing past lectures, assignments or tutorial questions.

2. Find a study partner/group Depending on what works best for you, being a part of a study group can be useful for many reasons: a) Holding each other accountable. b) Helping each other to better understand the content. c) Motivating each other to persevere ("you can do this!!").

3. Ask lots of questions!!

Have any doubts, concerns, or gaps in your knowledge? Clarify them ASAP!! Here are a few ways to get your questions answered: Email your lecturer/tutor Post on your course forum Ask your classmates/study buddies

4. PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE !!!!

If you haven't heard already, PAST PAPERS are your BEST FRIEND!! If your exam is coming up soon, don't waste time making notes. Do as many practise questions as possible so that you're actively recalling coursework and are also becoming familiar with the exam format. This is also a great way of identifying the weaker areas in your knowledge, so that you can effectively prioritise and focus on the topics that need the most attention.

5. Sleep Well No point cramming till 4am, if you're not going to be on your A-game on exam day. Find something relaxing to do just before your exam, so that you're well-rested and in the right mindset to smash that final! Believe in yourself, you got this!

Depending on your course, recommended pre-work could include reading your textbook, watching videos, reviewing lecture slides or doing a few practise questions.

This preparation work is designed so that you are able to better understand and engage with the content during the lecture.

If you are taking down lots of notes during your lecture, it's best to use a consistent format or technique to maximise efficiency and effectiveness. An example of this is using the Cornell Notetaking method, which uses two columns to match keywords with main ideas.

Cornell Notetaking Method

Don't waste time writing notes already written for you!! Before the lecture, make sure to download the lecture slides if they're already available to you. This way, you can focus on actively listening to your lecturer and writing down only the important notes discussed.

Don't stress!!

If you've done all the above, and still have absolutely no idea what's going on in your lecture, DON'T stress out (we've all been there): 1. Remember that you also have your tutorials, labs, assignments and additional practise questions to solidify your understanding of the content.

2. You can also reach out to your lecturer or tutor for help, or start a discussion on the course forums. There are lots of people to support you, so don't struggle alone!

Main Library

A popular spot for engineering students - you're sure to bump into someone you know here!

Classic choice. With many different levels to choose from, the library can accommodate for group or individual study sessions.

Red Centre

Also known as the Built Environment building, the Red Centre can be easily found along the middle of the main walkway.

Quadrangle If you're looking for some fresh air, the Quadrangle has many study areas across its two different levels.

Law Library For a study spot close to the Anzac Parade light rail, you can take a quick walk to the law library.

Business School Building There are many different study spaces to choose from here, but beware of the business students!!

Science & Engineering Building Hidden underground, this study space is perfect if you need to get some work done!

FROM WISER PEEPS Entering university as a first year student can be very challenging for some, as it is a foreign environment for high-schoolers. The drastic jump in workload, responsibilities, and self-independence takes some time getting used to.

As a first year, you're probably entering this 'behemoth' with your group of highschool mates - eager to excel, but completely clueless on where to start. While some people have older friends or siblings that can guide them, the majority of first years don't. They end up experimenting, making mistakes and having to learn things the hard way. Guidance in university can also be hard to get, as it takes initiative to meet older people outside of classes, which first years tend to lack. But hopefully, this section can help!

GET INVOLVED

Get your hands dirty, and get involved as much as you can!

University offers so many opportunities like societies, events and even programs that teach you stuff. By taking as many of these opportunities, you’re bound to make really good friends. The best decision of my life was joining the ChemEng society in first year, and now, I’ve grown to be their president! From this, I’ve made really good friends who have taught me a lot about how to live life in uni and enjoy it!

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF Learn how to take care of yourself.

Look - if anything, engineering is a pretty stressful degree due to the sheer amount of content and effort required to learn efficiently. Not only this, but the jump from high school to uni in responsibility is quite unexpected for many, like managing timetables and balancing their lives.

A lot of people struggle with this transition, not making time to take care of themselves. Selfcare by doing what you enjoy, socialising, and reflecting on goals definitely helps in the long run. Because before you know it, you’re already burnt out before the exam period.

TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY The main advice I would give is to probably go out and participate in the opportunities university offers.

I didn’t do things like subcommittee or peer mentoring, all because I didn’t take initiative.

Opportunities like these are the main places where you can make genuine friends. Something that helped me later was applying for everything I was intrigued in. DO YOUR BEST

I’d tell myself to go at your own pace and do your best.

Don’t compare what you achieve with what others do. Getting a low mark is not the end of the world. Reflect on your mark and see how you can change your study plan in the future, especially if it's a prerequisite. Naturally, I’d meet some super smart people in my course, and I kept comparing myself to them and kept thinking whether this course was the right fit for me.

It's best to go at your own pace and do the best you can - I really started liking my course in my third year and it may be the same for you!

BALANCE YOUR EXPERIENCES Balance your academics, social and professional experiences.

Experiences shape a person into who they are, and your limited time at uni will be more fulfilling if you find balance. While it is important to put effort into your studies, at graduation you will share the same piece of paper as everyone in your cohort. Take advantage of the many opportunities at UNSW to stand out. Personally, I was unsure of what I wanted out of ChemEng but by getting involved in Taste of Research, ChallEng Projects, and EngSoc's ACE Program, I have developed practical skills, made friends and gained a better understanding of industry.

VALUE TIME AND ENERGY When you are at university you’ve got to remember that time and energy are your greatest assets.

Think about what you want to do or achieve in the future, work towards your goal through upskilling, workshops, and working hard academically and your efforts will pay off. Also, don’t forget that you are only young once! Apart from working hard, it is worthwhile to spend the time to have a bit of fun through getting involved in clubs and societies, Unisports, meeting new people and building new relationships. The combination of hard work and having fun will make your university experience enjoyable and fulfilling!

GO OUT YOUR COMFORT ZONE I would highly advise myself to get out of my comfort zone.

Whether it be asking for help, or doing something you never thought you would do. In first year, I ended up messing up my schedule trying to go over the handbook myself. There are services like Nucleus that are willing to help first years who feel like they don’t know what they're doing. Just call them up! Also, definitely don’t be afraid to get involved in societies. You don’t know what’s going to happen, so you need to take every opportunity you have to make as many friends as you can. Personally, I don't think I would’ve passed some courses without studying together with my society friends.

DON'T TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED My biggest tip is to not take things in uni for granted.

University isn’t a walk in the park - you’re here to learn and develop yourself, so don’t make it a habit to skip out on lectures as tempting as it may be. However, in saying that, also don’t stress too much! University isn’t all there is to life, and there are so many ways to enjoy your first year.

Going to society events, such as speed friending, online games, and movie nights is the easiest way to make friends - so put yourself out there! Ultimately, it’s all about balance, so make time for yourself, for others and have as much fun as possible!

DON’T RUSH THROUGH UNIVERSITY Try not to rush through your degree.

Just don't! Many students are eager to finish their degree and start working ASAP, but you’ll regret all the opportunities you miss. The best thing to do is to start early - get organised and start participating in different societies and extracurriculars to find out what you do and don’t enjoy. I remember trying to get involved in a sorority back in America, but ended up not liking it.

Once I started getting involved after moving here, it was much harder to make the most of it as I got busier with uni and work. So get involved! And also consider studying abroad!

DON'T LIVE IN REGRET The last thing you want after finishing a year of uni is to regret not doing something.

If you are interested in something in the slightest - 'send it'. Whether it be applying for a society, trying something new or even wanting to talk to someone in your lecture. Just send it, because you never know if you'll ever get the chance to do it again. You also have nothing to lose! I learnt my lesson after a regretful first year of being complacent and signed up to societies and programs I was slightly interested in in my second year. In doing so, I got to make amazing friends, unexpected achievements and cherished memories that play a large factor in shaping who I am today.

CEUS is a student run society for Chemical Engineering students at UNSW. They have a vision to enable their members to achieve a healthy work and life balance at university, and host events to create well-rounded graduates by exposing them to industry. They have developed strong relationships with various companies in industry, as well as with our School and The Institution of Chemical Engineers.

CEVSOC is a student-run society affiliated with the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Their team works to completely supplement the university experience of the Civil and Environmental student cohort by hosting a wide array of events throughout the year, ranging from social, sporting, academic and career development events. They provide a platform for students to interact, build friendships and gain knowledge from other students.

CSESoc is the principal representative body for computing students at UNSW. They cater to approximately 3500 CSE students and over 9500 members, many of whom take Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Bioinformatics Engineering and Master of IT degrees at UNSW. They exist to fulfil the specific needs of those individuals. They also promote computing in all its forms through technical, social and professional oriented events throughout the year.

The core aim of CREATE is to provide opportunities for students to learn practical skills in engineering, innovation and design as well as collaborate on shared ideas and projects. By maintaining an active community of likeminded 'makers' and providing resources, knowledge and technology, the club seeks to foster an environment where anyone, regardless of their background, can be inspired to turn their ideas into designs, prototypes and products.

ELSOC is the constituent society for Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering at UNSW, and with over 700 active members, is one of the largest on campus, providing students with social, academics, and career events, as we strive to support all students from the faculty. All students that are part of the Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering faculty are welcome to join, which also includes Flexible First Year students, and those completing double degrees.

UNSW Mechatronics Society (MTRNSoc) was founded by a group of individuals with a passion for mechatronics. MTRNSoc is now the largest mechatronics-related society within the University of New South Wales. With over 300 members, MTRNSoc aims to promote Mechatronic Engineering opportunities and pathways in the UNSW community. MTRNSoc strives to engage students with real-world projects and fostering connections with industry leaders.

UNSW MechSoc has been supporting the students of the Mechanical Engineering community for over 50 years. They are one of the largest societies on campus and serve students studying Mechanical, Aerospace, Mechatronic and Manufacturing Engineering. Being a part of Mechsoc means members have access to a range of great social, industry and academic events to support you through your time at university.

SOMI wants to empower students to achieve greatness, specifically through medical innovation. They provide skill-building and educational events to foster the most crucial skills needed for effective innovation. SOMI also provides the opportunity to network with like-minded people to join members on their innovative efforts and take them to the next level. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, SOMI organises a series of opportunities for students to come together and build high impact solutions to real problems in healthcare.

There are numerous co-curricular opportunities available at UNSW for new students, from becoming a subcom of a society, to participating in a case comp with your friends. These experiences are all incredibly valuable in developing both your social circle and important soft skills that you may need in the future.

The biggest takeaway I have from my first year of uni is to keep an open mind and give everything a go, even if it’s outside of my comfort zone. For example, joining a society to make new friends or doing a case competition to get a taste of how it’s like to solve a real world problem. Taking part in case competitions and hackathons has not only helped boost my resume, but also enabled me to try new things that I wouldn’t have through my courses, for example, proposing a solution to help airlines to adapt to the ‘new normal’. It even helped me land my first internship as a Products Intern!

Here at Redback Racing, we are a team of 150 dedicated and passionate student engineers, scientists and business people who come together to design, build and race high performance all-electric Formula Student race cars from scratch. I looked to join the team at the beginning of 2021, wanting to fuel my passion and love for motorsport and for the mechanical engineering of cars but since becoming a team member, the team has provided me with more amazing opportunities and experiences than I could’ve imagined.

Working together with students who come from a variety of different backgrounds and areas of study and who are as passionate as I am is an absolute pleasure. Not only does it feel like working for a team but rather for a family. I’ve gained real-world experience from learning about design and manufacturing to using industry-standard testing and validation methods providing me with knowledge and skills that I will take with me throughout the rest of my career.

Joining Redback Racing means you can be part of a huge family where you feel included while at the same time, feeling like you’re making a real impact in a project where you compete in international competitions such as Formula SAE against the best in the world with a real race vehicle you designed and built entirely from scratch. I first heard about VIP during some ENGG1000 lecture back in my first year. Real-life projects that counts for course credits? Alright l'll check them out. Sunswift? NextGen Battery? Minisolar?

A year and a half ago, I joined the Minisolar team. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made during uni. What I've come to discover is that I enjoy working on purposeful projects way more than taking a regular course. Off the devastation of the 2020 bushfires, Minisolar was created to improve early bushfire detection to give firefighters more time to save lives.

Through this mission, I've been able to work closely with professors and academics in a way you just can't get in a lecture hall. I've been part of a team which won an international innovation competition.

I've also created the pitch video which was sent off to our project's investors.

With labs reopening in 2022, there hasn't been a better time to join a VIP in the last 2 years. I'll be returning again this year and I hope to see some new faces!
